Below is the translation of Togashi's LETTER (not the show episode article translation): Broadly speaking, we have three patterns of endings prepared, A, B, and C. If we look at the audience's reaction in terms of an approval rating, I expect that A will have 80% approval and 20% disapproval (not in the sense that it's highly rated, but personally my read is that it's just a safe ending and it's unlikely to get critical criticism); B will have a close split between approval and disapproval; and C will have 10% approval and 90% disapproval. The reason why I still have C left, where it's majority disapproval, is because it is my personal favorite. But fundamentally, the ideal and goal is to come up with an ending that is interesting enough so much so that none of these 3 patterns would need to be chosen. For your reference, I will disclose pattern D, which was discarded from the three possibilities, and I'd appreciate it greatly if you would forgive me by accepting this as the ending if I die before completing it. (Ending Pattern D): A girl is holding a fishing rod by a pond, not moving a muscle. The rod suddenly bends, and the girl shouts. Her name is Gin [Written in Japanese with a HARD G, not Jin. Like Gin from Bleach, or Gin-Tama]. Gin: "IT'S HEREEEEE!!" Carrying the lord of the lake over her shoulder, she stands in front of a woman proudly, and says: "Mom!! I caught the lord as promised!!" Gin gets even closer to the woman and continues with a quiet voice. "So now you'll never tell me to become a hunter ever again, right...!?" The woman reluctantly nods. Gin leaves with the lord on her shoulders. Mother: "I thought that fishing the lord would awaken the hunter in her... right/no?" The woman wanting her husband next to her to agree with her. Father: "Never leaving the island and inheriting/taking over the store.... That's Gin's current wish. Let's respect that". The woman still looks dissatisfied. Mother: "Well, she might change her mind along the way. Man, why are you so [...] with Gin... well... I guess that's Great Grandma Mito and Grandma Noko's blood..." Looks like the woman doesn't know that Mito and Noko aren't blood-related. The husband smiles quietly. Unable to give up, the woman continues. Mother: "But! Grandpa Gon was a famous hunter..! I'm sure she'll leave the island, some day." Gin: "I'm not leavingggg!!" The daughter yells from the depths of the forest where she can no longer even be seen, where she can't possibly hear her parents' exchange from. The father mutters happily. Father: " She sees right through [us/it] (can't fool her!)." The scene changes to a store that has been around since Mito's time. The lord [of the lake] has been filleted cleanly, and all parts have been prepped. Goes into Gin's monologue while working...Gin: (Mom doesn't understand...) (...That when Gramps talks about memories of his hunter days fondly, Grams nonchalantly excuses herself...) (All of Grandma Noko's nods [in conversation] modestly bleeds her feelings of loneliness of not having been able to have been next to Gramps... (lol Noko's got fomo)) Slams the cutting board hard with the hand holding the knife. (I refuse!!) (To wait for someone's return for months and years, while feeling your heart getting constricted!! Or to make someone wait for me!!) (I....) The sound of a door opening. A calm, peaceful voice resonates. A pudgy kid comes in holding plants. Boy: "Got some wild plants! Oh daangg, you really caught the lord!" "Alright! Let's treat everyone on the island!" Gin: (...Forever... I'm gonna stay with the person I want to forever...) Boy: "I can just imagine everyone's happy faces!" "Come on, let's get started!" Gin: (We'll be together forever!!) "Yup!!" The 2 cook with huge smiles on their faces. A bird flies away from the island. The bird soars through the sky. Underneath the bird is a town, some place. People from all walks of life. Someone's son, someone's daughter, someone's grandchild are living in various places, smiling with someone. It might be the child of that character or the grandchild of that character. I hope Togashi is able to finish the story his way, but if not, then I hope he just lives out the rest of his life in good health, joy, and peace. Plus, I haven't seen or read it what he put out there, and just getting this is ominous in its own way god forbid anything tragic happens.
He's in bad health now but that doesn't excuse the 10 plus years he took off just vacationing riding off the success that hxh brought without finishing it, the bezerk mangaka literally drew his story until he died in terrible health and still gave permission to have his story be drawn by his team and best friend to give his life's work a complete finish for his legacy and the fans and togashi doesn't allow that that's why people get pressed, obviously people want him to be happy and healthy but he made a career and became successful and needs to recognize his fame came from fans and it hurts his legacy to not have such a popular story be finished

I would like to see ending C as well. If it's dark and all of the characters end up dying except for Leorio, I would see that as very fitting honestly. Leorio could go on to become the leader of the Hunter Association and raise the next generation of hunters while remembering the main cast of characters we all know and love. He'd be carrying on their legacy with his knowledge and experience. Just an idea.
regardless of whatever ending, i want him to pursue what would give him peace... also, i would rather that he prioritizes his health and own happiness... i believe that most people that are into HxH this deep would follow and respect his decisions regardless of personal taste.
For the most part I do think your right the ones that stayed fans of HXH would definitely be satisfied that togashi is the one that made said ending more than then ending itself

Hey Liam, I would also like ending C to be the ending. It's Togashi's story telling and characters that I fell in love with. So, it's fitting that his desired ending is the way that I would like it to end.
Besides, even if, hypothetically, the ending sucked major balls it really wouldn't matter. HxH of all stories is the epitome of "it's the journey, not the destination".
I spit my juice hearing that tbh, now I'm like did they get together or ended up with someone else. It might seem unlikely that they could end up together and still have children. Then again mpreg is a possibility in HxH due to the pregnancy stone card that happens to exist in greed island. And let's be real if there's anyone Togashi wants Kurapika to marry it's Leorio, he literally had them marry on April fool's lol
I want the one Togashi wants. I want him to use his genius to lay out and conclude the story exactly the way he wants, because that genius is what produced arguably the single greatest manga in history in terms of writing. I also hope for a non-generic ending, and I think the more Togashi can do what he wants, the lower the risk for that. In any case, I just hope Togashi can live as long, as healthy and as good as possible, and continue doing what he and we love for as long as he wants.
I’m curious why Togashi predicted that ending C will have 90% rate of dissatisfaction if its the ending togashi prefer out if the 3. Bcs so far the fandom is satisfied with every arc ending from the anticlimactic yorknew ending, happy greed Island ending, to depressing chimera ant ending. What could possibly make us hate that C ending im curious
Sad doesn't mean unsatisfying. Sad and satisfying aren't mutually exclusive. Togashi should give an ending befitting to the theme of the manga. A sacrificial death can still be meaningful in the grand scheme of things.
Everyone dying IS unsatisfying. It really doesn't matter what the series is, killing off all your characters IS NOT a good way to end a story.@@Tomiwa101
Damn, now I really want to know the other Endings, especially Ending C. I usually like it when a series ends in a way nobody expected it. And in HxH you have infinite possibilities for unexpected twists and/or a really dark ending. But most importantly, lets hope for the best for Togashi's health 🙏
Togashi is a writer who delivers, so letting him cook would be ending C in my opinion. Hopefully he doesn’t suffer too much in case the worst happens. Happy to have read and watched hunter x hunter, memorable and remarkable work 😤🔥❤️
I dont think A or C are what his heart is set on the most, I think you were correct in saying they are the extremes of what the end could look like, the ideal ending would be the one he writes without thinking if it would satisfy the reader but what would make him feel like he accomplished his goal of a 'complete' HxH
I'm the one person that actually liked the YuYu Hakusho ending and I don't really know why. Yes, it lacked closure but in my opinion, did really well projecting the way forward for the main cast and the series ended on sort of an anthology note, like we were witness to a portion of the characters' lives and what happens next "could be a story for another time" or something like that.
Honestly knowing how he writes I can see each of these endings being drastically different by the time the series (hopefully) concludes. Togashi is prone to having an idea for something at the start that ends up being drastically different than what he originally thought.
Hunter x Hunter is one show where the ending can easily be a happy and simple one and it would still not affect the show, since it is a show built on detours and different adventures and not one singular goal, that is completed and you would feel the story is done. Togashi can any day make up a new interesting detour with new interesting characters and make the story go on forever. The ending was never important. What matters the most right now, is the loose threads regarding many of our favourite characters and the world to be sewn together, and the current potential of the story which seems to be huge, to be fulfilled. The epilogue can be happy or sad it doesn't matter. Naturally a happy ending after all the turmoil is one recurring theme of HxH, and so I would prefer that.
Ending D is too cutesy for me. It’s so much the obvious happy ending that it feels trite. I’d probably would most want an ending A or B But if he asked me I’d tell him to go option C, whatever it is. It might not be the ending I will find the most satisfying, but art is always better when it’s what the artist feels passionate about. And he’s been making an amazing manga for years, I think he’s earned the right to end it on his terms. I trust his instincts
I hope this at least takes some pressure off his backs and who knows maybe in the future he will reveal the other endings or be willing to get more help with the series

If Gon has grandkids that'd mean he's straight and Killua was his best friend and nothing more (& they're kids so that's how it should be imo). The shotacon fujoshi are gonna rage and it's gonna give us all a good laugh. 😂 lol just like how they raged when Kaneki chose Touka in Tokyo Ghoul. Hilarious back then. Still hilarious now.
except this time theres much more writing between gon and killua than there was with kaneki and hide. theres a lot of 'read between the lines' moments they have, and i think their relationship can be read both ways. they have a beautiful friendship, of course, but if there was something more then oh well.

The characters around him might be gay, but in the end, he won't be. Japan is not like the US. Once they pick a genre / target audience, they stick to it. They're not going to do the "surprise gay" thing that Hollywood is infatuated with doing. It's part of Japanese culture to pick an audience and respect that audience. Shonen Jump is a publisher that built its entire brand on being the go-to brand for anything and everything that appeals to young (straight) boys. The gay alternative to shonen is shonen-ai and Japan has publishers that build their brand around that too. A good example would be the shojo series: Cardcaptor Sakura. Even if the characters around Sakura might be gay, Sakura herself would never be. That's because she's the main character of a shojo series, not shojo-ai (the lesbian alternative). If you're not a young boy, but you still like shonen in the same way guys sometimes like shojo such as Sailor Moon, that's fine. You just have to remember though that you're still not the target audience. Sailor Moon isn't gonna stop its focus on young girls just because men and older women watch it too. Japan has these genre tags and rules embedded in their culture and they view it as both a reliable marketing strategy and a way to respect their audience's time and financial investments. It's not like Western companies who couldn't care less about any of that cuz politics are more important to them. And, as expected, Japanese media is thriving while Western media is going downhill. And it's precisely because they don't care about target audiences nor adherence to genre. Betraying your audience amounts to losing money. Anyway, that's why it's hilarious that people got so upset over Kaneki and Touka that there were book burnings. Tokyo Ghoul is seinen (straight adult men), not yaoi (gay adult men). Kaneki was always gonna be straight. People got heated over something that was pre-destined to happen. A simple glance at the genre tag would've shown that.

@@milmil5350 this is why I think that Togashi might have considered (at least as some point) Killugon ending. Years ago, he had complaints about the publisher censoring his work, so he couldn’t go on as he wanted (whatever it was). I think when he talked about 90% dissatisfaction rate probably meant Japanese audience who sure won’t be happy with the change of the genre, not some tumblr woke folks. So, even if he wanted they still probably wouldn’t allow it, unless he will change the publisher… Anyway, ending D still sucks, prob the most generic ending ever written.
With the current arc, we are still in pretty safe shonen/seinen territory. But later, he can just publish independently, if it is possible in Japan. What to do with the raging audience is another matter…
I never really understood the dislike for the end of YYH. Sure, that last arc didn't reach the heights of the Dark Tournament, but ... I'm reminded of a comment from Joseph Heller, when asked why he was never able to write anything as transcendant as his first book, Catch-22. He said something to the effect of "I'm not even sure why I was able to write that book in the first place. If you figure that out, let me know!"
I could imagine a Ending where we see Kupikas Corpse on the Dark Continent - and on the next Panel we see Queen Oito and Wobel on their way back to civilization. Here Kurapike choose sacrifice over vengance giving his life to ensure those placed under his protection return savely. It would be very dark but i think it would also be a fiting ending for Kurapika.
@@dragodraco7511 I think the theme of choosing sacrifice over vengenance isnt disrepsectful and more a very much possible out come. I dont really think its an unpopular theory that Kurapika will die in this Arc. The Grimmreapers Scythe has been hanging over him for quite sometime and the question was only when and under what circumstances? Since its gonna be soon the only question remaining is how he will die. For that i see 4 possibilitys. 1. He dies after fullfilling his Lifegoal due to battlewounds or just dark continent shenanigans. This one would be very simple and forseeable and conclude his story arc while removing him permanently from the story. 2. He dies without regaining the head of his Friend as in an important moment he had to choose between his revenge and saving those under his protection. He choose the later and thus sacrificed himself for Wobel and Queen Oito. The looming threat of his revenge eating him up is here prevented by prioritizing life over death. 3. He does get his revenge and kills Tseridnich but realises that his life is now emtpy without this goal. In a last act he makes a Nen Contract that grants Queen Oito and Wobel safety in exchange for his life. He reaches his life goal but at the same time makes the choice to use his life to the benefit of others. Its a merged version of 1 and 2. 4. The bad shit crazy theory. Tseridnich becomes so powerful that on arriving at the Dark Continent he is an eldritch being beyond human comprehension that ravages the Dark Continent with its power to the point that it gets classified as the 6th Catastrophy of the Dark Continent. To contain him Kurapika sacrifces himself infusing his chains with his life in a Nen Contract that forever binds Tseridnich to the Dark Continent never to return to the human world. I personaly think 2 is the most likely to happen as i pointed out before. But knowning Togashi 4 isnt complettly of the table. 3 i think is the most unlikely and 1 is the second most likemy after 2 in my opinion. 4.
The only ending I want is whatever ending Togashi feels satisfied ending the series with. I feel the need to say it like that rather than specifically saying C is because knowing Togashi, he is liable to change his mind and might come up with a brand new ending he likes better. Hunter x Hunter is far from perfect, but it is without a doubt Togashi unedited vision and that’s what I want it to stay as until the end.
Happy and satisfying are mutually exclusive concepts: you can bave both, neither, or just one. I think what he means is when he gives a his titular satisfaction meter is how well each ending ties back to the themes of the story, and whether or not it gives a proper conclusion to its various characters and story beats. And it just so happens that his favorite is the one that accomplishes neither in a way that any longtime reader would find endearing. Personally, I think this entire thing equivalent of him saying "yeah it's kinda sorta asscheeks, but damn this shit slaps dawg"
I prefer ending C as well. Togashi is an amazing author and I love the realism he brings to a fantasy series. I have no problem with a happy ending but I don't like cliche happy Disney endings lol. Something real and legit that makes me think deep!
I would also like C because I LOVE endings where the good guys don’t win. It adds a level of attachment to it that happy ending can’t provide. Like what if we get an ending where everyone in the black whale die. No more team Ghon, Ging, phantom troupe, Hisoka, etc…? Something tragic like a cinematic view of their bodies left behind on the dark continent after fighting a calamity or each other. But I’d also love if they found new land beyond the dark continent and left a cliff hanger for a new series or something,
I don’t understand how u can prefer a ending where everybody dies to a ending that raps up every character satisfyingly it just sounds like ur trying to hard to be edgy

@sage7625 so I've been told. But I stand by my statement lol. Obviously my likes & opinions will differ from others, but imma still share what I'd like to see haha. But realistically, this wouldn't be the ending we see. It would be unpopular and not well recieved if everyone's favorite characters died. And it's a very cheap way to cut a story off and end a series. It's not necessarily creative, it's just out of pocket & shocking.
i want you to continue this channel even after hxh ends and do that by making your own diffrent endings Because you deserve a chance to give your own spin to the series as you are deeply invested and you must be having some sort of idea as to how the will end
Togashi please just go into light novels. You are fantastic with writing and I'd read a book you wrote in a heartbeat. Just have someone write down what you are planning to do.
Lmao he likes being a mangaka. He is a PROUD mangaka. He wouldn't do that. He literally could just script hxh and let other people draw it. But instead he lets his assistants draw the background and he draws the characters and writes the story. Togashi expresses his love for the show in that same written letters and also says that he wouldn't consider himself a mangaka if he lets other people draw his manga fully. As in you KNOW he loves being a mangaka, not just a story teller. A novel wouldn't satisfy him. He wouldn't be proud4of himself if he did that
@@pininja4981 Being prideful always leads to one's downfall. Which is why his health declines. His stubborness makes his work be in vain. Good luck to him though, some fans already died ages ago and some still want to see his story be complete while some doesn't care anymore as it is his own story.
my only fear for ending C is if it's something so entirely unsatisfying that it completely breaks the whole "subverts expectations" meter and is just down right bad - like if Gon and Hisoka get ready to fight, a dramatic scene is set... Only for Hisoka to one-shot Gon, killing him, and then Hisoka proceeds to dab over Gon's lifeless corpse, as the rest of the main cast spontaneously die due to Hisoka's overwhelming display of dominance, and cut to black for several pages essentially the "anti-joke" equivalent of an ending, followed by cringe dated humor
Open: Heavens arena Gon and Hisoka stand in front of each other. Big speeches literal chills Gon says: Open the door, get on the floor everybody walk the dinosaur. Dance sequence Fade to black.
Gon trips and falls into a cavern While falling he says "I guess this is the Hunter X Hunter" He then falls on his head, killing him instantly Fade to black
Hunter x Hunter became my favorite story from the amount of effort and detail put into it by the author. I think I’m with everyone wanting ending C because we appreciate and trust the genius that’s crafted everything we’ve seen thus far
I honestly don't care how HxH will end, it could literally be the worst ending ever but hopefully Togashi would still be with us. It just breaks my heart that Togashi is worried that he won't live to finish it 💔

I can say that i am satisfied with this, I just want the series to have an ending in some way, with Togashi's wishes. I would much rather the series have some end, rather than no ending. Besides Togashi’s well-being matters more than the series.
Ehh... Nah actually. An ending this vague and this far in years doesn't even count as an ending. Its more like a spinoff of hxh. Like how the legend of Korra was made many years after. But yeah. Its not much of an ending. This isn't an ending you should be satisfied with tbh. But if he dies, hope not, but if he does, ig we have no other choice. I want him to finish the whole show tbh
@@pininja4981 Well I agree to disagree. I am satisfied with whatever Togashi will write at this point. Because he said it himself, it is either he finishes it or he passes away before he does. This is probably the closest we will ever see to an ending of Hunter X Hunter. Also it is supposed to vague, remember, he is doing this on a percentage of how much his fans would enjoy it. Different scenarios based on different percentages.

If Togashi truly cared about his health, he would stop drawing his mangas and give it to some he trusts....or at least do the rough sketches to give framework. Dark Continent would have been way behind now.
You know, I was against option C until I heard you put it that way. Togashi has given us every single moment of his life and ounce of his energy that he can possibly manage, now including an ending for all of us to be happy with, so he deserves more than anyone to give his greatest work the ending he wants it to have most. You've sucessfully converted me to an option C believer.
I wonder what brought this on. Like has Togashi's health suddenly gotten worse or is this somthing he's just been sitting on? I hope he's okay, but I can't help but be curious. The ending itself is fine and largely inoffensive, which I guess is the point. I wouldn't mind it own its own, but all things considered, I obviously hope it doesn't happen.
I really hope togashi gets to finish his masterpiece, or at least whoever picks up after goes with whatever ending togashi wanted. It's togashi's story, i think it'll be fair to get his vision on it regardless of what most readers want. I always liked hxh because it subverts expectations, it makes it unique because it doesn't try to cater to the majority of readers.

To be honest, I like happy endings, even with a bitter sweat note. Not every char has to live in the end but well I hope that at least one gets his happily ever after. I hope Togashi writes what ever he sees fit, as long as it is not a joke ending a la "rocks fall everyone dies". But I still think ending D is realy good even if it is a little bit cliche. Love your content, been a subscriber for years, but this is my first comment. Keep up the good work and greatings from germany ^^
I don't know what it is you're saying, there's only one ending. Killua and Gon get married, and both of them get nen m-preged by each other; and then they have two sons who go on to become Hunters. And maybe a few more kids who don't become Hunters. That's the ending. 😘❤
About nen: I don't think Gon will ever regain it, or at least i hope he doesn't. The series is not one to throw in loopholes just to please the audience. I think the point of taking away his ability to ever use nen again is that it's a subversion of normal Shonen power tropes where the main character always becomes stronger to stay relevant. I think Togashi is a good enough writer to not rely on such cliches and still make Gon an interesting key player in the story. My 2 cents
I kinda didn't mind the non-ending of YYH because it was so common for both eastern& western shows to have them, but I did hate that it ended with most of the characters hooking up with girlfriends when their relationships were not properly fleshed out. No series did this worse than Toriko.
to be honest, i am most happy that 1. Togashi has thought about the ending of hxh enough to come up with 4 endings and thought about them in detail to even guess what fan reactions would be. Tells me that his passion for hxh remains strong and that if he is able to continue, the quality will be maintained (rather than a loss of interest and a rushed wrap up just to end it... or just throwing the entire project into the waste bin); 2. the ending COULD include Gon. whether he is or is not your favorite character, he and Killua did carry the hxh story for a long while and finding out (in any way) how his life may have come to an end is really quite nice. :) even if he is never able to finish this great story, it warms my heart to know that he still finds joy in it!
HxH was supposed to correct the problem he had with YYH's ending but this is even worse than YYH's end. Right in the middle of this War on the Black Whale. If he really can't do it anymore enjoy your retirement Togashi. You gave us a lot of good for decades and fought your health to delivers us some if the best manga ever made.
At the very least, if the worst happens, I hope Togashi has a plan D draft that he can pass on to a student or his wife to conclude the manga with a final chapter. Summarizing some of the events that would have transpired if he hadn’t passed and concluding with this final scene
Definitely want Ending C… I may have issues with it, depending on how Togashi defines “dissatisfied” but I’d much rather see and understand how he wanted it to end

True Manga was bad but show was good. Aot saved it's ending by changing a bit here and there. A year ago if anyone hated the ending it would be considered based but currently if anyone hates the ending they are considered a donut. Option C might be the option I'd want. I don't want some Disney ending like in Naruto shipudden. I want something real and something which hits in the guts. In option C I think many will die like maybe hisoka chrollo and kurapika yk. And gyro and gon. So I'm definitely in for realistic ending. It want be as bad as togashi is saying he just means to say that by regular Shonen standards and lay outs. It'll just stand out a lot as a Shonen later on. I really want option C because ik the other 2 endings might be some soft core drama.

I always find it odd when YTers complain about people commenting before the video is over. Seems like a pretty normal reaction to me. People pause & comment before watching the whole video because the video is 10+ mins, you know? So You Yu Hakusho is one of my favorite anime of all time. I personally could not stand another ending like that and this ending (D) leaves me very disappointed. I also would like ending C but when I think about it I think that there's going to be an ending where Gon doesn't get nen back and I think that ending intrigues me almost as much as any other.

(I think?), where the story ends off with gons granddaughter, I’m not gonna lie, I’m surprised gon not only had children of his own, but ended up with noko. Because if im being completely honest, I was really expecting and hoping that at some point he would ended up being with killua because how they’re relationship read to me, especially on killua’s end lol, also because it would’ve been a nice change in terms of lgbt representation in shounen, I mean it wouldn’t be the first time togashi has written lgbt characters in any of his works, especially HxH with characters like Alluka who is a trans character, and pitou who is non-binary, so I always expected for gon and killua to go the mlm route. But then I have remember that mlm relationships in shounen is still seen as too “extreme” and “progressive” for certain audiences lol so I digress… Edit: So aside from that and with focus on another anime, In a perfect world where togashi’s chronic back issues get miraculously better, I would hope that yu yu hakusho would get rebooted like the way it ended so abruptly with so much potential still breaks my heart 😩
i never thought gon and killua would have an explicitly canon relationship, i just figured theyd have subtle moments that can be read into like they had before (maybe js a little more obvious as their relationship grew) so when i saw gon had a whole wife and kids AND grandkids, i was so surprised, its like i had been reading their relationship wrong this whole time. the fact that ending d was even an option just shows where togashis head is at i think. (making them straight)
Another fan pointed out that Gon also mentions Noko when he made the pinky promise to Palm in the manga (which if you’ve seen the anime, then you’ll know the anime omitted that part out.) I have thoughts about this news, but I’ll probably come back later when I can articulate it.

IMO Yuu Yuu Hakusho have one of the best endings I ever read in any manga, it isnt just the final chapter but the final volume that makes a great ending.
if togashi has his heart set on C, thats what I want to read. ending D was actually really dissatisfying to me. only way C could be more dissatisfying than D is if everyone just kinda got one shot by something unbeatable and that was it, but if togashi's heart is set on C then I seriously doubt it would be something like that.
1:28 I love that you're making that point. Because my favorite arc is Grees Island and it is exactly NOT that. It's a game world, with game rules, so the ending is game like. Baddies lose, but don't get killed, the heroes win through heart at the end, everybody smiles and it's onto a new adventure.
I think ending C should be his goal of course, it’s his art, his world that we all get to view. That being said though I would prefer a more 50/50 approach. Give us something good to let our imaginations take beyond the series. I don’t read fanfic but I imagine many do and I think a 50/50 ending leaves enough for both sides of that coin to continue this series for themselves and whatever fans they create.
why would anyone want gon to recover his nen? does everyone hate real consequences to character's actions? why undo his resolve and motivations behind what he did to avenge Kite? so sad to think that this is what people care about, and it affects what a good writer has to consider. just let gon be, he's fine and donezo. his story is over. if anything i think he should show up or call kurapika to convince him his vengeance is not worth it, and that stops kurapika from finishing off chrollo or something cool like that. that sounds like hunter to me, not just fanservice battles for the sake of it
Jing was such a shitty parent. I'd hate to think that Gon would be as irresponsible & neglectful as his dad. Growing up with only 1 parent has a lot of disadvantages, though nowhere near as bad as growing up with two abusive parents like Klllua did.
a Togashi statement saying "ending A is deemed satisfactory by 80%; and therefore, unsatisfactory by 20%" is emblamatic of the redundant extraneous in his writing that will increase the liklihood he probably won't have time to finish the series, and that makes me sad.
I would like to see C as well. On principal of letting an artist do what they want with their art, especially such a long running series, but also because I'd personally be most curious to see what Togashi thinks is the most satisfying ending to him.
I don't think people will care if Togashi goes with ending C, considering he's had a good track record up to now. Kurapika likely won't live due to his bloodlust and Leorio will most likely live to the end but everything else is ambiguous enough for Togashi to flex his writing muscles and let us enjoy his ride and story.

Broadly speaking, we have three patterns of endings prepared, A, B, and C. If we look at the audience's reaction in terms of an approval rating, I expect that A will have 80% approval and 20% disapproval (not in the sense that it's highly rated, but personally my read is that it's just a safe ending and it's unlikely to get critical criticism); B will have a close split between approval and disapproval; and C will have 10% approval and 90% disapproval.
The reason why I still have C left, where it's majority disapproval, is because it is my personal favorite. But fundamentally, the ideal and goal is to come up with an ending that is interesting enough so much so that none of these 3 patterns would need to be chosen. For your reference, I will disclose pattern D, which was discarded from the three possibilities, and I'd appreciate it greatly if you would forgive me by accepting this as the ending if I die before completing it.

He's in bad health now but that doesn't excuse the 10 plus years he took off just vacationing riding off the success that hxh brought without finishing it, the bezerk mangaka literally drew his story until he died in terrible health and still gave permission to have his story be drawn by his team and best friend to give his life's work a complete finish for his legacy and the fans and togashi doesn't allow that that's why people get pressed, obviously people want him to be happy and healthy but he made a career and became successful and needs to recognize his fame came from fans and it hurts his legacy to not have such a popular story be finished

I would like to see ending C as well. If it's dark and all of the characters end up dying except for Leorio, I would see that as very fitting honestly. Leorio could go on to become the leader of the Hunter Association and raise the next generation of hunters while remembering the main cast of characters we all know and love. He'd be carrying on their legacy with his knowledge and experience. Just an idea.

Besides, even if, hypothetically, the ending sucked major balls it really wouldn't matter. HxH of all stories is the epitome of "it's the journey, not the destination".

I also hope for a non-generic ending, and I think the more Togashi can do what he wants, the lower the risk for that.
In any case, I just hope Togashi can live as long, as healthy and as good as possible, and continue doing what he and we love for as long as he wants.

Sad doesn't mean unsatisfying. Sad and satisfying aren't mutually exclusive. Togashi should give an ending befitting to the theme of the manga. A sacrificial death can still be meaningful in the grand scheme of things.

I dont think A or C are what his heart is set on the most, I think you were correct in saying they are the extremes of what the end could look like, the ideal ending would be the one he writes without thinking if it would satisfy the reader but what would make him feel like he accomplished his goal of a 'complete' HxH

I'm the one person that actually liked the YuYu Hakusho ending and I don't really know why. Yes, it lacked closure but in my opinion, did really well projecting the way forward for the main cast and the series ended on sort of an anthology note, like we were witness to a portion of the characters' lives and what happens next "could be a story for another time" or something like that.
Honestly knowing how he writes I can see each of these endings being drastically different by the time the series (hopefully) concludes. Togashi is prone to having an idea for something at the start that ends up being drastically different than what he originally thought.
Unfortunately the only way this series ends is if he hands it over to another mangaka.
Hunter x Hunter is one show where the ending can easily be a happy and simple one and it would still not affect the show, since it is a show built on detours and different adventures and not one singular goal, that is completed and you would feel the story is done. Togashi can any day make up a new interesting detour with new interesting characters and make the story go on forever. The ending was never important. What matters the most right now, is the loose threads regarding many of our favourite characters and the world to be sewn together, and the current potential of the story which seems to be huge, to be fulfilled. The epilogue can be happy or sad it doesn't matter. Naturally a happy ending after all the turmoil is one recurring theme of HxH, and so I would prefer that.

But if he asked me I’d tell him to go option C, whatever it is. It might not be the ending I will find the most satisfying, but art is always better when it’s what the artist feels passionate about. And he’s been making an amazing manga for years, I think he’s earned the right to end it on his terms. I trust his instincts

Japan is not like the US. Once they pick a genre / target audience, they stick to it. They're not going to do the "surprise gay" thing that Hollywood is infatuated with doing. It's part of Japanese culture to pick an audience and respect that audience.
Shonen Jump is a publisher that built its entire brand on being the go-to brand for anything and everything that appeals to young (straight) boys. The gay alternative to shonen is shonen-ai and Japan has publishers that build their brand around that too.
A good example would be the shojo series: Cardcaptor Sakura. Even if the characters around Sakura might be gay, Sakura herself would never be. That's because she's the main character of a shojo series, not shojo-ai (the lesbian alternative).
If you're not a young boy, but you still like shonen in the same way guys sometimes like shojo such as Sailor Moon, that's fine. You just have to remember though that you're still not the target audience. Sailor Moon isn't gonna stop its focus on young girls just because men and older women watch it too.
Japan has these genre tags and rules embedded in their culture and they view it as both a reliable marketing strategy and a way to respect their audience's time and financial investments.
It's not like Western companies who couldn't care less about any of that cuz politics are more important to them. And, as expected, Japanese media is thriving while Western media is going downhill. And it's precisely because they don't care about target audiences nor adherence to genre. Betraying your audience amounts to losing money.
Anyway, that's why it's hilarious that people got so upset over Kaneki and Touka that there were book burnings. Tokyo Ghoul is seinen (straight adult men), not yaoi (gay adult men). Kaneki was always gonna be straight. People got heated over something that was pre-destined to happen. A simple glance at the genre tag would've shown that.

@@milmil5350 this is why I think that Togashi might have considered (at least as some point) Killugon ending. Years ago, he had complaints about the publisher censoring his work, so he couldn’t go on as he wanted (whatever it was). I think when he talked about 90% dissatisfaction rate probably meant Japanese audience who sure won’t be happy with the change of the genre, not some tumblr woke folks. So, even if he wanted they still probably wouldn’t allow it, unless he will change the publisher… Anyway, ending D still sucks, prob the most generic ending ever written.
With the current arc, we are still in pretty safe shonen/seinen territory. But later, he can just publish independently, if it is possible in Japan. What to do with the raging audience is another matter…
I never really understood the dislike for the end of YYH. Sure, that last arc didn't reach the heights of the Dark Tournament, but ...
I'm reminded of a comment from Joseph Heller, when asked why he was never able to write anything as transcendant as his first book, Catch-22. He said something to the effect of "I'm not even sure why I was able to write that book in the first place. If you figure that out, let me know!"
I could imagine a Ending where we see Kupikas Corpse on the Dark Continent - and on the next Panel we see Queen Oito and Wobel on their way back to civilization. Here Kurapike choose sacrifice over vengance giving his life to ensure those placed under his protection return savely. It would be very dark but i think it would also be a fiting ending for Kurapika.

I dont really think its an unpopular theory that Kurapika will die in this Arc. The Grimmreapers Scythe has been hanging over him for quite sometime and the question was only when and under what circumstances? Since its gonna be soon the only question remaining is how he will die. For that i see 4 possibilitys.
1. He dies after fullfilling his Lifegoal due to battlewounds or just dark continent shenanigans. This one would be very simple and forseeable and conclude his story arc while removing him permanently from the story.
2. He dies without regaining the head of his Friend as in an important moment he had to choose between his revenge and saving those under his protection. He choose the later and thus sacrificed himself for Wobel and Queen Oito. The looming threat of his revenge eating him up is here prevented by prioritizing life over death.
3. He does get his revenge and kills Tseridnich but realises that his life is now emtpy without this goal. In a last act he makes a Nen Contract that grants Queen Oito and Wobel safety in exchange for his life. He reaches his life goal but at the same time makes the choice to use his life to the benefit of others. Its a merged version of 1 and 2.
4. The bad shit crazy theory. Tseridnich becomes so powerful that on arriving at the Dark Continent he is an eldritch being beyond human comprehension that ravages the Dark Continent with its power to the point that it gets classified as the 6th Catastrophy of the Dark Continent. To contain him Kurapika sacrifces himself infusing his chains with his life in a Nen Contract that forever binds Tseridnich to the Dark Continent never to return to the human world.
I personaly think 2 is the most likely to happen as i pointed out before. But knowning Togashi 4 isnt complettly of the table. 3 i think is the most unlikely and 1 is the second most likemy after 2 in my opinion.

The only ending I want is whatever ending Togashi feels satisfied ending the series with. I feel the need to say it like that rather than specifically saying C is because knowing Togashi, he is liable to change his mind and might come up with a brand new ending he likes better. Hunter x Hunter is far from perfect, but it is without a doubt Togashi unedited vision and that’s what I want it to stay as until the end.
I love how all HxH fans seem to have collectively agreed that we want the ending Togashi thinks we want the least the most.
This makes me sad. For both reasons. He writes i think 2 of the best manga of all time. Goated for all time.

Happy and satisfying are mutually exclusive concepts: you can bave both, neither, or just one.
I think what he means is when he gives a his titular satisfaction meter is how well each ending ties back to the themes of the story, and whether or not it gives a proper conclusion to its various characters and story beats. And it just so happens that his favorite is the one that accomplishes neither in a way that any longtime reader would find endearing.
Personally, I think this entire thing equivalent of him saying "yeah it's kinda sorta asscheeks, but damn this shit slaps dawg"

I prefer ending C as well. Togashi is an amazing author and I love the realism he brings to a fantasy series. I have no problem with a happy ending but I don't like cliche happy Disney endings lol. Something real and legit that makes me think deep!

I would also like C because I LOVE endings where the good guys don’t win. It adds a level of attachment to it that happy ending can’t provide. Like what if we get an ending where everyone in the black whale die. No more team Ghon, Ging, phantom troupe, Hisoka, etc…? Something tragic like a cinematic view of their bodies left behind on the dark continent after fighting a calamity or each other.
But I’d also love if they found new land beyond the dark continent and left a cliff hanger for a new series or something,

But instead he lets his assistants draw the background and he draws the characters and writes the story. Togashi expresses his love for the show in that same written letters and also says that he wouldn't consider himself a mangaka if he lets other people draw his manga fully. As in you KNOW he loves being a mangaka, not just a story teller. A novel wouldn't satisfy him. He wouldn't be proud4of himself if he did that

my only fear for ending C is if it's something so entirely unsatisfying that it completely breaks the whole "subverts expectations" meter and is just down right bad - like if Gon and Hisoka get ready to fight, a dramatic scene is set... Only for Hisoka to one-shot Gon, killing him, and then Hisoka proceeds to dab over Gon's lifeless corpse, as the rest of the main cast spontaneously die due to Hisoka's overwhelming display of dominance, and cut to black for several pages

Hunter x Hunter became my favorite story from the amount of effort and detail put into it by the author. I think I’m with everyone wanting ending C because we appreciate and trust the genius that’s crafted everything we’ve seen thus far

You know, I was against option C until I heard you put it that way. Togashi has given us every single moment of his life and ounce of his energy that he can possibly manage, now including an ending for all of us to be happy with, so he deserves more than anyone to give his greatest work the ending he wants it to have most. The ending itself is fine and largely inoffensive, which I guess is the point. I wouldn't mind it own its own, but all things considered, I obviously hope it doesn't happen.
I really hope togashi gets to finish his masterpiece, or at least whoever picks up after goes with whatever ending togashi wanted. It's togashi's story, i think it'll be fair to get his vision on it regardless of what most readers want. I always liked hxh because it subverts expectations, it makes it unique because it doesn't try to cater to the majority of readers.

To be honest, I like happy endings, even with a bitter sweat note. Not every char has to live in the end but well I hope that at least one gets his happily ever after. I hope Togashi writes what ever he sees fit, as long as it is not a joke ending a la "rocks fall everyone dies". But I still think ending D is realy good even if it is a little bit cliche.

About nen: I don't think Gon will ever regain it, or at least i hope he doesn't. The series is not one to throw in loopholes just to please the audience. I think the point of taking away his ability to ever use nen again is that it's a subversion of normal Shonen power tropes where the main character always becomes stronger to stay relevant. I think Togashi is a good enough writer to not rely on such cliches and still make Gon an interesting key player in the story.

I kinda didn't mind the non-ending of YYH because it was so common for both eastern& western shows to have them, but I did hate that it ended with most of the characters hooking up with girlfriends when their relationships were not properly fleshed out. No series did this worse than Toriko.
to be honest, i am most happy that 1. Togashi has thought about the ending of hxh enough to come up with 4 endings and thought about them in detail to even guess what fan reactions would be. Tells me that his passion for hxh remains strong and that if he is able to continue, the quality will be maintained (rather than a loss of interest and a rushed wrap up just to end it... or just throwing the entire project into the waste bin); 2. the ending COULD include Gon. whether he is or is not your favorite character, he and Killua did carry the hxh story for a long while and finding out (in any way) how his life may have come to an end is really quite nice. :)
even if he is never able to finish this great story, it warms my heart to know that he still finds joy in it!

HxH was supposed to correct the problem he had with YYH's ending but this is even worse than YYH's end. Right in the middle of this War on the Black Whale. If he really can't do it anymore enjoy your retirement Togashi. You gave us a lot of good for decades and fought your health to delivers us some if the best manga ever made.
At the very least, if the worst happens, I hope Togashi has a plan D draft that he can pass on to a student or his wife to conclude the manga with a final chapter. Summarizing some of the events that would have transpired if he hadn’t passed and concluding with this final scene

True Manga was bad but show was good. Aot saved it's ending by changing a bit here and there. A year ago if anyone hated the ending it would be considered based but currently if anyone hates the ending they are considered a donut.
Option C might be the option I'd want. I don't want some Disney ending like in Naruto shipudden. I want something real and something which hits in the guts.
In option C I think many will die like maybe hisoka chrollo and kurapika yk. And gyro and gon. So I'm definitely in for realistic ending. It want be as bad as togashi is saying he just means to say that by regular Shonen standards and lay outs. It'll just stand out a lot as a Shonen later on. I really want option C because ik the other 2 endings might be some soft core drama.
Though the D ending is scrapped, I believe Jin inherited the trauma from abandonment and neglect that Gon or even Gon's son experienced. 😅

I always find it odd when YTers complain about people commenting before the video is over. Seems like a pretty normal reaction to me. People pause & comment before watching the whole video because the video is 10+ mins, you know? I doubt most people will remember what they wanted to say if they wait for the entire video, regardless of whether the comment is a salient point or not. So You Yu Hakusho is one of my favorite anime of all time. I personally could not stand another ending like that and this ending (D) leaves me very disappointed. I also would like ending C but when I think about it I think that there's going to be an ending where Gon doesn't get nen back and I think that ending intrigues me almost as much as any other.

Some of you ppl are probably gonna get mad at me for saying this (which idky) but in regards to ending A? (I think?), where the story ends off with gons granddaughter, I’m not gonna lie, I’m surprised gon not only had children of his own, but ended up with noko. Because if im being completely honest, I was really expecting and hoping that at some point he would ended up being with killua because how they’re relationship read to me, especially on killua’s end lol, also because it would’ve been a nice change in terms of lgbt representation in shounen, I mean it wouldn’t be the first time togashi has written lgbt characters in any of his works, especially HxH with characters like Alluka who is a trans character, and pitou who is non-binary, so I always expected for gon and killua to go the mlm route. But then I have remember that mlm relationships in shounen is still seen as too “extreme” and “progressive” for certain audiences lol so I digress…
Edit: So aside from that and with focus on another anime, In a perfect world where togashi’s chronic back issues get miraculously better, I would hope that yu yu hakusho would get rebooted like the way it ended so abruptly with so much potential still breaks my heart 😩
i never thought gon and killua would have an explicitly canon relationship, i just figured theyd have subtle moments that can be read into like they had before (maybe js a little more obvious as their relationship grew) so when i saw gon had a whole wife and kids AND grandkids, i was so surprised, its like i had been reading their relationship wrong this whole time. the fact that ending d was even an option just shows where togashis head is at i think. (making them straight)

IMO Yuu Yuu Hakusho have one of the best endings I ever read in any manga, it isnt just the final chapter but the final volume that makes a great ending.
if togashi has his heart set on C, thats what I want to read. ending D was actually really dissatisfying to me. only way C could be more dissatisfying than D is if everyone just kinda got one shot by something unbeatable and that was it, but if togashi's heart is set on C then I seriously doubt it would be something like that.

It's a game world, with game rules, so the ending is game like. Baddies lose, but don't get killed, the heroes win through heart at the end, everybody smiles and it's onto a new adventure.

I think ending C should be his goal of course, it’s his art, his world that we all get to view. That being said though I would prefer a more 50/50 approach. Give us something good to let our imaginations take beyond the series. I don’t read fanfic but I imagine many do and I think a 50/50 ending leaves enough for both sides of that coin to continue this series for themselves and whatever fans they create.
why would anyone want gon to recover his nen? does everyone hate real consequences to character's actions? why undo his resolve and motivations behind what he did to avenge Kite?

Jing was such a shitty parent. I'd hate to think that Gon would be as irresponsible & neglectful as his dad. Growing up with only 1 parent has a lot of disadvantages, though nowhere near as bad as growing up with two abusive parents like Klllua did.
This ending is a scrapped ending for if he dies it would be considered canon. For now it’s not considered canon.

a Togashi statement saying "ending A is deemed satisfactory by 80%; and therefore, unsatisfactory by 20%" is emblamatic of the redundant extraneous in his writing that will increase the liklihood he probably won't have time to finish the series, and that makes me sad.

I would like to see C as well. On principal of letting an artist do what they want with their art, especially such a long running series, but also because I'd personally be most curious to see what Togashi thinks is the most satisfying ending to him.
I don't think people will care if Togashi goes with ending C, considering he's had a good track record up to now. Kurapika likely won't live due to his bloodlust and Leorio will most likely live to the end but everything else is ambiguous enough for Togashi to flex his writing muscles and let us enjoy his ride and story.

Gon’s only aged a couple years in the story so far, so is Togashi gonna write 1000 chapters or something??
