I’ve worked on the pipeline since 2008 and it’s a great job with great pay BUT!!!…. You will miss birthdays, anniversaries and holidays but if you have a strong faith based marriage it’s a pretty good gig.
Yes you will miss half of a normal life with family. I started up there in 1979. We stayed in camps with the bathrooms down the hall. We only had one moral phone in our camp that was limited to calls of 10 minutes. . I was a well logging tech in the 80s and in the 90s I started working in communications doing remote communications for exploration wells. I worked the pipeline doing communications for 15 years ending in 2013. I’ll never go back. The money isn’t what is used to be. In the 80s it was easy to make 70-80 grand a year which with inflation that is the equivalent of $200 grand today.
My boyfriend currently works at Red Dog mine and has been on a 4x2 schedule. We have a 3 year old and it’s so so hard for her when he leaves. Momma works from home and daddy goes away to work. It is rough saying goodbye so often and for so long but we appreciate all he does for us and huge respect for all the guys that work in the mines and oil fields, it’s not a glamorous job but so thankful they do it❤️
Glad you’re back. Missed the vlogs. Our fingers are crossed for Evelyn - she is fantastic. Always love it when Bert takes us to work with him. The oil fields trip is very interesting. Yes Bert, show us the store. Can’t wait until tomorrow Evelyn. Love you all
Started on a rig when 17 years old I was with neighbors drilling in north Dakota here recently. Hauled oil the last 4 years. The oil fields were good to me. Even driving truck I did 3 weeks with one off flew back to georgia and did it again. With rigs I did one on and one off. I'm 62 and still working.
Yes, take us shopping at the store! The MickeyD's cost comparisons were fun :) And, that sounds like some great pay, yet not sure how the living conditions would affect the psyche for the long haul. Safe travels, and good luck with the try-outs.
My uncle and Aunt moved to Alaska at the start of the building of the pipeline. He worked up and down the line. There home was in North Pole. They had and raised their family their. But now that they are retired they live in AZ.
Yay... A post. Glad to see that everyone is doing well. I totally love watching your vlogs! I've been watching the old vlogs working my way to the thru all of them. It's amazing to see how my the kids have grown into beautiful young adults.
When we walked into the store in Prudhoe Bay the first thing we saw on the shelves were hammers that were made in a factory 7 miles from our home which is about 4000 miles from there. We also met a young man who arrived on his motorcycle. He had just completed a trip from the southern tip of South America.
Thank you for the tour of Deadhorse & what life is like in the oil fields. Thankful for all the people working there in those extreme weather conditions. Blessings to you Somers family!
I’ve worked up there a year and a half. It’s the most money I’ve made but also some of the loneliest times I’ve had. All and all it’s not that bad besides the occasional blizzard and working in consistent -40 degree temps.
Happy to see "the Somers family" know you're very busy but really do miss all of you. So happy for Evelyn but feel sad for Audrey ...she's so sweet and smart and reliable but its like she's left out...good luck with the apparel...winters coming...God bless your sweet family
As a 20 yr Military vet, Defiantly lived the live of the oil camps, per say. Instead of the extreme cold had extreme heat... Also my Brother in law worked up there for years. I was also stationed in Alaska 96 to 98. Loved it. Was stationed at Clear Air Station, Before it became a reserve base.
Yay!! We were wondering if y'all were doing okay. I actually had you in mind when I opened up RUclips just now and was so surprised and excited to see that you just posted! Hope y'all are well!!
Cool trip up to Deadhorse. My company moved us to the Aurora Camp when it first opened. We were lucky to have rooms with private bathrooms. Thanks for the memories!
Evelyn is amazing! She is so strong for a young girl. She will go far if she wants to. Gymnastics is not easy. Keep encouraging her, you are a wonderful family!
So happy for Evelyn. In my heart I feel Audrey way in the background wishing she had a talent that got so much attention, at least in the vlogs. Of course Garrett is simply cute. I'm sure God has blessed Audry with loads of gifts, probably some wonderful spiritual gifts.
If her mother spent time with her she may want to do ,. But with Evelyn her mother does everything for her and cost doesn't matter. I'm still floored they gave Audrey a hope chest for Christmas!! She's only 14!! They should of bought her clothes, makeup, music and other things!! Hope chest is when your 16 and older!!☹️☹️☹️☹️
Nice to see how thankful your children are, yes Thanks Bert for sharing your work with everyone, it's interesting to see what you do. You work hard for your family. Be blessed.
I did the haul road from Fairbanks to Deadhorse... stayed at Deadhorse, but not at the Aurora hotel. Bert, your room as awesome! The room I stayed in was OK..ha! Best part, I was a tourist and I got to step out into the water on top of ice.. and that was in the month of July. Great memories and glad I was able to experience Prudhoe Bay. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed your vlog. Don't listen to all the silly/hurtful comments. You are a great family. People just love to try to create drama. It's like they have to make every RUclips family channel a reality TV drama or something. How can they really know what your dynamic is like? You only post the highlights etc... Keep up the good work! 👍
My husband works within the Canadian OilField, he actually installs the camps the workers stay in and does the maintaince for them. I've seen that style of room so many times over the years . It's one of the nicer ones
G'day from Melbourne Australia! Man I was worried about you guys! I'd check at least twice a day to see if you guys posted. Bert YES to going shopping there. Evelyn is so dang graceful at gymnastics! What a star. Hope mum and the rest of the family are recovering from their covid scare????? Here we're still in lockdown #6. Doing ok albeit mental health is escalating as you can imagine. Hugs to you all. Stay safe Somers.
Please tell me of your experiences at the Aurora staying there! I enjoyed my time as a baker and later breakfast cook. We didn’t get to stay in the hotel itself, but in that train-shaped building next door. My first tour there was 3 weeks and I had all the cold weather gear except a face shield. Big mistake when it’s -50 and a -80 wind chill! And in the middle of summer one day, it was 3:00 in the morning and sun up in the sky, very fascinating! And a month before, it was 1 in the morning, daylight, and snowing. Have you been to any of the radar sites in Alaska? The last one I went to was Barrow, which was my favorite and the least remote. I worked for them afterwards and in 2014 got hired in the civil service on Elmendorf as a cook where I worked before retiring from the Air Force and been there since. I love watching all your adventures! Keep them coming!
It’s not always easy when your significant other isn’t home. My husband is a sea captain, so he’s away for weeks at a time. You do get used to it but you do keep missing them. Bless you all
Thank God a post! I just sent yalls instagram a message hoping all was okay! Between youtube and Instagram it's been radio dark! So glad to see this upload 💓
I lived in North Pole a number of years ago working at Wainwright. Knew Burts parents. They your siblings and your parents business partners were my lifeline during a very, very rough time. I live in north central Kansas. I would go outside for a little fresh air with no coat for a few minutes when the temp would be 30 - 40 below. Others would chastise me for that action. Keep in mind the stay was only @ 5 min. My answer was yes, it’s cold but there is no wind! I am used to wind chills of 60 - 100 below so this is not that bad.

My brother did turnaround all the time in oil rigs.. He said hard work but money is good. My friend husband is on a 29 day turn around. He misses family but good money plus their no work in his area. He a welder and travel with a group where ever there work. Hard life but have lots of friends who have family out on rigs so use to that life. Be safe and have a blessed day.
I travel all over the country for work and in February I worked at a place called red dog mine in Alaska and I’ve never scene more beautiful land! This brought back the feeling of the man camp we stand in there called “the pack” no roads in or out only accessible by plane no roads for 50 miles nearest town I believe was called kotzebue Alaska side note I’m from Pennsylvania so it was quiet the haul! Lol
I was stationed in Alaska for about 5-6 years back in the very early 70's. Loved it and did not want to leave but the wife hated it, so, naturally we left.😁 The pipeline was in progress at that time and a good friend worked there for 2 years. Made great money but the work schedule was grueling. Looking forward to seeing some of the changes that have taken place since 1976.
Very nice tour and yes it would be great to see the store as well. I have been watching Coast Guard Alaska and the weather and the way they have to rescue people is just jaw dropping at times!! Good luck Evelyn and I can't wait until the next post!! Thanks so much for all you do, I am actually looking forward to some cold weather so I can wear my SomersinAlaska hoodie!!!!

Hi Folks - Fascinating info about your parts of Alaska. I was following an American UTube traveller to the Arctic Circle and came across your videos. I’m a Canuck 🍁 but am learning a lot about your great northern State. Cheers to you both and your family. And - Bravo!
Good video. Accurate. I spent 12 years working at Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk in the 80s and 90. Mostly 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Commuted from Washington State.
So many people from Montana work up there for states that don't have a lot of jobs this is a good opportunity to stay and live where you want but still provide for your family and plus side is when your home you are 100% home
Glad y’all are doing well, I hope Bert’s mom is doing better. Time for y’all to do another Costco run... love those videos, Evelyn is doing fantastic I think she nailed this one for sure. Go honey! LOL
Glad to see your video. I don’t sleep well at all when my man is gone on his hunting trips. I have to endure a week without him. Fingers crossed for Evelyn!
My parents has worked as a civil engineers for Exxon Mobil. My dad did his part for 33 years. It’s exciting to see another part/perspective of the oil industry
My SO has only been away for 2-3 days at the longest and I slept amazingly! I knew she was totally safe so there was that. I tried to use every square inch of our king-sized bed.
So relieved that y'all are doing well..thought something bad had happened...love getting to go along with Bert..so interesting. Evelyn is just so graceful and talented.
Thank you for this informative Vlog... Evelyn is really progressing wuth her Gymnastics... She may even inspire Garrett a little on her new bar... HUGS & BLESSINGS to You ALL & Bert with SAFE TRAVELS GBY ALL 🙏❤💙💖💖💙🤗✝️
Evelyn is so tiny, too cute. Wishing the best for her placing, I'm sure she made it...DEAD HORSE sounds like nowhere I wanna be, but another place to include on my prayer list for the people who work there and their families...when Burt said MINUS 100° F WIND CHILL, LAWD HAVE MERCY, TOO COLD. Glad the family is doing well, give everyone a hug for me, when you talk to your family, give them a verbal hug for me. Get you some rest, thank you for thinking of us as much as we think of you...
Happy Friday, SOMERS. I hope you’re having a safe day. I haven’t been hearing you guys. It’s good to see you again. I hope everything’s okay. School is in session right now. You SOMERS stay safe and healthy and continue on your road on getting the giant gold play button
Wow Bert is so informative where ever he goes! That’s a very interesting place! Yes go to the store! That would be cool! Sharing bathroom reminds me of my college dorm days! Go Evelyn! I know you made it cause you have worked so hard! Love from Georgia ❤️
So glad to see you back in action. Saw your Insta story and saw you all weren't feeling so good. Prayers for healing to you all. Hope Evelyn got good news...God bless Somer's family!!
Hoping and praying little Evelyn made the team! She is an AWESOME gymnast! All of your kids have their own little gift and talent. Such an amazing family! I love seeing the different places in Alaska that Bert goes to for work. I would love to see Alaska some day! It's a beautiful state! Jessica, I am looking forward to seeing what your next launch will be! I have purchased from you in the past a few times now. I love all the products you sell! God Bless you family! 🙏❤
Anxious to hear if Evelyn made the team. I truly believe that she did since I think she is great at what she does. I was impressed with her skills before she even started taking gymnastics. That was quite interesting seeing the work camp sleeping arrangements. Glad they are fed well. I would love to see the store in that area. So glad to see the vlog this evening. I was quite concerned that one of you might have been sick.
My husband & I lived in Kotzebue for 15 years and survived -100 temps with wind chill more then once. We would dress with three layers of clothes to walk to work.
Prayers E got in♡ My husband is a truck driver so I understand been driving a semi for just over 29 years was in the service for 10 before that. Don't sleep very well at all

Prayers E got in♡
My husband is a truck driver so I understand been driving a semi for just over 29 years was in the service for 10 before that. Don't sleep very well at all
Let's see the store and more of the camp.
