UPDATE: I heard back from Dekoni about the cobalt drivers. Dekoni apply a special nano particle coating to their driver that is not found on the R7DX driver. This results in a "topology diaphragm," which is said to produce a more natural and detailed sound than what the driver would normally produce.
Really fascinating comparison! I really appreciate that you showed what the internals looked like as well so we could see exactly how similar the internals looked. Really great review!
Thank you for having both the Cobalt and the R7DX to compare, and actually opening both to compare the internals. I suspect the only major difference is the pads. Why Dekoni charges $399 for the Cobalt versus the Drop R7DX being available for $89 right now is beyond me.
It is quite the price jump. I suppose we have to consider that with the dekoni you get two sets of pads, around $130 of value, and the upgraded headband. That's why I suggest if you already own the R7DX to just grab a pair of dekoni pads.
I've been on the fence with the Cobalt. I already own the Drop R7 so I will go ahead and upgrade the pads instead. Which cobalt earpad do you recommend? Thanks for any info you can pass on. I really enjoy your reviews!!
So that's what lead to all this teardown. I had a second pair of R7DX pads. I equipped both headphones with those pads and they sounded extremely similar.

Totally forgot to give it a Cloud Comfort score! 7 Clouds of Comfort.

I personally prefer the Elite Velour pads, but Dekoni themselves recommend the Fenistrated Sheepskin.
You should put the r7dx’s pads on the cobalt?!😆
Is it returns to r7dx’s sound?

Yes, definitely.
