Absolutely SICK! In all the modern urban senses of the term! The looks, the sound, the details and inter-connectivity for all is just mind blowing! Yet so many questions I'd love to ask. But definitely am reassured that this sim is HARDCORE for the serious train fanatic. Tremendous review Nick, with a great soundtrack as always - and great number by you as well in it. Being a Run-8 user myself, I must say this is a fantastic video, showing it off to good effect. Yes there are some small issues with the simulator as you state, but the developers are always active on their forums and there has been two updates already with a new one soon. The other forum users are also a great bunch and help is always forthcoming from everyone. I heartily recommend Run-8 to those looking for more realism in their railroading.
Hi again, I have just purchased the Run 8 simulator and when installing it, it said after that everything installed successfully but when I would launch the game, it would just say "Run 8 has stopped working" and I have no idea of what to do. I sent an e-mail asking for a new link sent to a different e-mail since I was using hotmail and they said it gives the url problems. Is there anyway I can fix this or should I try and get a new link for the download?
@@butterpecanisfire thats the whole idea behind V3 . and the engine is perfect.... its stable and does everything it needs to do . and you can update the graphics, yet keep the same engine . V3 should add weather effects (like things look wet.... rain running down the windows, ETC..... and clouds that actually look like thunder storms / super cells) .

Weather changes depending on the date chosen for the session. Skies can be cloudy and clear in different places on the route, and fog is possible at several locations.

The graphics look like a cross between MSTS and Railworks and the gameplay (especially the multiplayer) sounds incredible! I'll have to try it one of these days.

Run8 is so cool but SOOOOOO EXPENSIVE. I mean, to get more locomotives, cars, and routes, you have to pay anywhere from $10 to $20. PER PACK. It's extortion, I tell you! Especially for a guy like me who would want to run the Bakersfield Sub in the mid-90s after the BNSF merger and in the twilight of the Amfleet era on the San Joaquins, who is also unemployed and not rushing to get a job because I'm lazy.
While I agree, I remember that Railworks charges the same prices for their content which isn’t nearly as good quality. Still, the price is a big turn off for me. I bought Run 8 V1 years ago and enjoyed it, but I could never bring myself to drop $50 for V2 especially knowing V3 is in the works
Not sure if this helps, but train braking is super accurate, you go to stop and your own cars actually bunch up and shove you. It can make for some scary moments. You can be going along and if your not prepared things can change really rapidly, you have to be ready on the dynamic and the train brakes.
To those watching: I have the strangest problem with Run 8. Whenever after I select my train and load the sim, it crashes while loading. Can anyone explain?
I just recently purchased R8, and I really enjoy it. Well worth $138. Honestly, I have played with an actual engineer, he said this was as real as it gets.

I've been having problems with Railworks on my computer and was looking for a different simulator that worked well but I was wondering, do you think that this would work on a laptop or should I not bother? Railworks worked fine until I loaded many videos and pictures that I took and I'm wondering if it would happen with this too. I have a 750gb hard drive, would that be good for it?
I love this game, already done countless trips and various freight trains over the mountains, it only gets better, can't wait to see the added content either. one thing I don't understand is that this was the very first train simulator release the crossing gates and lights are perfect gates bells lights ect but when the next version came out the crossing lights flashed way to fast and the light lenses were orangeish on the Mojave pass
No, and for that reason, to see another train you have to be on multiplayer. Even on multiplayer, sometimes you can run over 100 miles and not see one other train.

Nick, My only question about the Multiplayer is in regards to helper operations. Is there a way to have a set of helpers hook up to another user's train and have independent control? I think manned helpers online would be a HUGE selling point. I am definitely going to keep my eyes on Run-8!
Not yet but they do plan on releasing some editing tools in the future. I think their main goal is to release more routes and trainsets to build up their client base.

Run 8 only comes with the ES44, but there are other locomotives and freight cars you can purchase. At this point, there is no route editor for building your own routes.

As with other small businesses, the model here is to produce additional equipment for a modest price. It's truly a case of "We built that," but if you favor freeware redistribution of trains for a sim, then Run8 is not for you.
I got this and it installed right but keeps crashing. I have enough ram and HD space but am only .7 ghz under what it requires with my grafics card. I Tried turning the graphics down but does nothing. It will load than just stop working.
I'd quite like to try this sim, to be honest. But there's one thing that bothers me though: the fact that there's only one type of engines. Other than that, seems pretty interesting.
Take a Look at Train Sim World once you will be blown out of the water and have you watched the Diary's about how they are making Train Sim World you might be surprised
Run8 just came out with Version 2. Scenery wise it has grown exponentially. But the more important thing a AI system like no other was added. Making the operations way more realistic.
TIL I just discovered Run8 today so I'm hoping they eventually combine the features of this game with the with their detailed graphics. That'd be the ultimate train sim. But they definitely gotta work on optimization first. From what I've seen on my computer, the game uses only one core, meanwhile my graphics card is hardly being taxed.

Good review, except for one key item you didn't mention! The sim doesn't support activities with AI train traffic. No problem if you are running MP but if you run stand alone, that's what you'll be alone!!
I can only wonder what they'll do when they get in to the steam locomotives I know their was more levers an more work. I cant afford to get it at this time but I must say I am wondering about it. I was also wondering as a newbie to this I seen Railworks an also train simulator 2012 an out of them both what is better. From the reviews I can see (run8) is prime but what simulator would be second in line. an thanks for the show an your time reading my comments
If you are a modeler, a train driver, or a gamer, this sim is not for you. If you want to simulate real RR operations far better than anything else currently available, it should be your sim of choice. Multi-player is truly addictive.
I keep coming back to this for the California March. Such an amazing piece that I wish was posted somewhere for easy listening.

Nvm, fixed it. Had it installed in the wrong place, and there was updates to install, and there was that one other program. But, IT WORKS!

A small nit-pick. The screens are actually SDiS's (Smart Display screens). MFD is just a general term for display screens.

Your not far off from that, it's one thing to play a train game for a few minutes but if your spending 4 hours at a time you need to get outside.

I had the same problem, Right click the sim and run it as an administrator.
I think run 8 is meant to become a training program for engineers & other roles on the railroad, sooner or later
