I appreciate how they establish him as a conqueror first before revealing his motive to marry Princess Peach. This way they made it clear that even if she says no he’s still going to take over the world and destroy her kingdom. He’d just rather rule it all with his “one true love”.
I especially love the scene where he commands Kamek to crush toad if Peach doesn’t say yes, and how he doesn’t say anything in the moment he just smiles.

Honestly the movie was very classical in that regard. Because medieval politics and conquering normally required either territorial ambition or wanting a foreign princess's hand in marriage. Some time the way about it was subtle, like buying the other kingdoms's debt to the point that your nation could literally walk into their territory, demand you to surrender, have a brief fight, and still take over the enemy kingdom.
Bowser's strategy was a mixture of all. He conquered his way to obtain the star which gave him immense power (IE like giving a bunch of knights with bows bolt action rifles and cannon, or a kingdom a atom bomb) this way Bowser pretty much just had to "insist" through the threat of violence to make the other kingdoms surrender.
Peach's kingdom was a two way; either she accepts and becomes his queen without even threating him, thus zero bloodshed for either side, or she refuses and he is forced to show her that she has zero power or Aces to act upon to keep her nation from being absorbed. As we all know Peach chooses option 2, which makes Bowser show his hand and pretty much the rest of classical conquest; I literally have so much power behind me your nation is a bug that I can step on and not loose sleep over. Either surrender peacefully and become my queen or fall. Your choice.

We understand why Dr Eggman is scary, and can be a very effective villain, when Sega chooses to implement more of a narrative in Sonic games. But Bowser is more complex than being a meat headed brute. He has a son he loves and cares about deeply, he’s determined in his goals, and he knows when it’s important to accept a truce, despite his hatred of Mario. It’s interesting how Eggman is now “catching up” as a more fleshed out villain like Bowser is. Sure, he “hates that hedgehog”, but with Sage, and the events of Sonic Frontiers, we could see the mad doctor go through as much character growth as the king of the koopas has. Ultimately, the villains of gaming’s two most popular mascots are liked for different reasons, as they have many similarities and differences.

Pretty great breakdown of Bowser as a character. I feel like the reason he remains bad despite the fact that he could easily be redeemed is because Bowser being bad is more in his DNA. It seems like he was just raised hard to be this spoiled and selfish bad guy, and its so deep rooted in his core, that even in his best moments, he can be a jerk. But it still works, because him still being bad while also getting those nice moments just keeps his balance as a character intact.
Its funny though, because a redeemed Bowser is basically if Bowser got the King Dedede treatment. Where Dedede IS NOT a bad person at all, and is clearly just more so selfish and prideful. Which is why following being humbled by Kirby, he leaned into being a good person. Obviously, HAL still wants to have cool fights with him because he's an iconic boss, but they keep those intact with the possession stories and him being a rival to Kirby. Definitely can be overused... but wouldn't mind if Bowser went in a similar direction. But just to a lesser extent.

Here's what I liked about movie Bowser: the two qualities pretty much everyone knows about are 1. He's violent/bad and wants power, 2. He loves Peach and wants to be with her. They work great for a pretty much plotless story, but with the Mario movie I think they pulled the perfect move by making him just super emotionally volatile. Seeing that he's just a sweet turtle ox who wants love is silly, but if he doesn't get his way he's gonna burn the mushroom kingdom to the ground works so well for him.

It’d be cool if we got a Mario & DK game where we see Bowser & King K. Rool interacting with each other, as I’ve heard they both hate each other, so K. Rool could potentially be one character that Bowser explicitly hates, and it would also sort of reflect the feelings that Mario & Donkey Kong have towards each other, so it’d be kinda fitting in a way.

I really like videos like this that get in depth with Bowser's character. Most mario games play out the same because they focus more on gameplay rather than story, so we don't really see much from the characters or their interactions. But the thing I really liked about the mario movie, were scenes where Bowser gets REALLY angry at mario, and rather than using the star as he said he was going to, he never did. They showed just how jealous he was at mario for being able to have genuine interactions with peach, and how frustrated he was, especially at the end battle. I really want them to dive in more into his character like that but I'm also afraid since it's illumination and they'll just rush the film or sweep that stuff aside. Nevertheless I'll take what I can get from them, plus this comment is too long. 😅 I also adored every piece of footage you included!

Bowser is compassionate. He cares for his minions, he treats the koopalings right, and his own son.
Superstar Saga, he willingly teams up with the bros to help restore peach's voice.
Super Mario RPG, he helps Mario save the world from Smithy's Gang.
Super Paper Mario, helps Mario Stop Count Bleck from ending all worlds.
Origami King, he is the one who helps give Olivia a boost of confidence, is willing to help Mario out and even chooses to be turned into Origami just to help Mario and Olivia out. Bowser's Inside Story, he indirectly helps the bros stop a great evil. He even has motives for going to the meeting with Peach. In the sub-plot, Bowser Junior's Journey, you find out why he went in the first place. His goal was to help his minions. All of his "Bros Attacks" are his minions, that he rescues. You even see in Dream Team where after he loses, he congratulates his elite Trio. In Paper Jam, you see Bowser [and paper Bowser], hold a bruised Junior in his claws, and immediately after you fall off his castle, he launches a cannonball and destroys Peach's Castle.
Super Mario Sunshine, he is on vacation, and even willing to admit the truth to junior. Galaxy, he respects Mario as a rival, and even mentions it. Bowser is willing to Race and Party with his rival and lover. What evil Villain would be willing to Drive in the same Go-kart in Double Dash with their Arch-Nemesis, or Hi-Five them after winning a minigame?
Bowser would. He even is generous in his Bowser Moments, If you are in dead last and have nothing, he gives you something, Even if you are his most hated rival. Bowser in Odyssey even comments on Mario's outfit, especially if he wears the Wedding Bowser Amiibo.
Bowser may be a vicious and evil villain, but he is willing to work with his rival, Mario, more so than really any other villain hero combo... Save for 1 exception. King Dedede to Kirby. And Both of them, care about their troops. Why else does Bowser's Troops willingly sacrifice their lives to take down Mario. Bowser's charisma, and motivation gets them to stand up and fight against the foes.
In the Mario and Luigi Games, Bowser never gives Luigi the time and day, calling him Green Stache every time they meet. It's only Dream Team, where Bowser calls Luigi by name.
Even in the Yoshi's games, Baby Bowser/Bowser is a threat and intimidating [in an adorable way.... Kamek, don't use your magic... oh shit! there goes the castle again]. I think seeing an origin story on Bowser would be really neat. Seeing how Bowser came to be, and who his parents were. Bowser has learned how to be a great father, thanks to Kamek.

It should be Bowser I believe, he can still be the "bad guy" in the sense of big dude energy while being a Good person, he shouldn't be the bad guy in every game as its getting tiring.
Fighting the same guy over and over ans over, there should be a new villian to spice things up, maybe a Fawful like one or something else.

1:25 Not always. In the very first game, she was the only one who could return the transformed Mushroom Kingdom citizens to their original bodies after they were transformed into various objects, so kidnapping her was just a means to an end. It's kind of nebulous for a while afterward, and eventually his attraction is made clear, though sometimes his goal is something entirely different. Peach has nothing to do with his plan in 3D World, as he's conquering another kingdom, while in most other games, his ambition and desire for power is comparable to his love of Peach.
3:14 I mean, he kind of did in Mario Galaxy. He literally wanted to rewrite reality.
6:25 It depends on the continuity. That definitely seems to be the case in the sillier games, but at least in the movie, it seems more like he _desires_ her more than he truly loves her - he resorts to torturing one of her subjects in front of her to force her to accept his proposal (and possibly implicitly threatening her with the death of her subjects during the sacrifice scene), and when she rejects him during the wedding, he just starts trying to kill her. Long before Mario develops any sort of romantic interest in Peach, Bowser scares himself into making Mario a romantic rival due to his obsession that may be interpreted as some kind of narcissism. Even the suggestion/question that Peach will say no from one of his minions causes him to _sear the flesh off of the offender's bones_ before he gives his answer.

Threatening, but due to the many failures he is both ridiculed and respected by most characters aware of his reputation. He is a force to be reckoned with, but he is also a shortsighted large man with anger management issues. 2:40 Yeah, no I refuse to believe that Bowser somehow hasn’t managed to kill a single soul. This is the same dude who commits terrorism on the Mushroom Kingdom and all of its inhabitants DAILY. The dude tried to take over the whole damn universe TWICE with the first time having him inadvertently causing the DESTRUCTION OF THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. Even in the spin-offs, in Mario and Luigi Dream Team, he willingly used the new castle created by Antasma to DESTROY nearby islands containing indigenous life and in Paper Jam, he attempted to DESTROY the Paper Mario universe. And don’t even get me started on Movie Bowser who straight up destroyed the Ice Kingdom in its entirety (there are definitely penguins that died in the process), literally kills one of his soldiers onscreen by burning him into a skeleton, was going to sacrifice all of his prisoners including some of his own MEN to a burning death, and then was flat out going to NUKE the Mushroom Kingdom in its entirety. Even if you want to genuinely believe that Bowser somehow hasn’t killed ANYONE, the dudes still homicidal as hell and that’s why he’s dangerous. He’s nowhere near like Plankton, Doofenschmirtz, or Wild E. Coyote who are purely comically inept, overly-goofy and wacky, and ineffectual villains who are extremely harmless and you just feel bad for them, he’s a psychopathic war-mongering maniac who has been shown to be perfectly okay with killing as many people as possible just to get what he wants.

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, we learn that Kamek is his adopted father, meaning Kamek is technically ultimate evil of every game where Bowser does evil things. Now, that we know Kamek is the reason behind Bowser being messed up, can we have unique design for him Nintendo? And not just regular magikoopa? Kammy Koopa got unique design, but the one who appears more and is kinda more important doesn't? No hate for Kammy, she's great partner for Bowser in Paper Mario... 2 first games (I can't say series, sadly), but still. Why did this comment turned from explanation on Bowser being evil to pointing out issues with two most important Magikoopas in the series?

Honestly, Bowser is the big reason WHY I've no interest in the Mario movie. Yes, he's cool, badass, charming, creative, etc. But here's the problem: He's the VILLAIN. He's the guy who LOSES in the end. He's the guy you're not SUPPOSED to root for.
Meanwhile, Mario is generic and boring. I get no joy watching him beat his opponents because there's just nothing unique or interesting about him. Sure, for the time of his inception, he was okay-ish, but in a day and age where there are MILLIONS upon BILLIONS of human characters, and virtually everything's been done with them? Also, in game he has no personality. They tried to give him one in the movie, but it's very weak and generic compared to the more bombastic Bowser.
Frankly, I don't want to see the BORING character win. Why does the hero always need to be so BORING, or even unlikeable while the VILLAINS are the unique and creative ones (and usually more likely to be relatable). I wannt to like the goodguy. I want to like the winner of the story. I don't mind if I like the villain AND the hero, but I NEVER want to like the villain, but NOT the hero.

honestly my favorite example of Bowser teaming up with the Mario Bros and overall my favorite representation of Bowser (probably because you play as him) is in Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. The final battle perfectly displays his personality too, even when being visibly pushed back he STILL calls Fawful's hurricane wimpy. Not to mention that final dialogue goes hard,''Listen up! You're saying this kingdom will vanish? NOT TODAY! THIS KINGDOM IS ALL MINE! SO *YOU* VANISH!''
