Jade plants are very low maintenance, however they do suffer from problems and pests. Let’s learn some Crassula Ovata Care tips to keep your Jade Plant happy and healthy.
JADE STEMS STRETCHING OUT - If your Jade Plant is not getting sufficient sunlight it will become etiolated. Etiolation is a plant’s natural response to lack of light. Stems and the plant itself are stretching out towards the direction of the light source. In addition to the stem stretching out, you will notice that the spaces in between each leaf gets wider. The plant’s growth tends to be weakened when in this state. You may even notice leaves falling off subtly. See the comparison between these two Jade Plants. The plant on the right has large gaps in between each set of leaves. The plant on the left is more tight and compact with normal spacing.
When your Jade Plant grows too tall too quickly it will not look as attractive as it once was.
FIX A STRETCHED OUT JADE - Propagate cuttings to alleviate some of the weight on the top. You will eventually see new growth where you made a cut. Wait for the cuttings to callus over for 3-5 days and then place cuttings in well draining soil.
JADE PLANTS LEANING TO ONE SIDE -Jade Plant is not getting enough light it may end up growing towards the light and leaning to one side. Find a brighter spot for your plant and remember to rotate it to ensure it gets light evenly.
BROWN LEAVES OR DARK SPOTS ON JADE LEAVES - Most common reason for brown or dark spots on the leaves of your succulents is sunburn. This can happen if the plant is exposed to direct full sun or if the plant was recently moved to a sunny location without acclimating it first.
FIXING BROWN OR SUNBURNED JADE LEAVES
There is nothing you can do to heal the leaves that have been sunburned on your Jade Plant. Over time they will grow out leaving your succulent looking it's best once again.
If your Jade Plant leaves are more than 50% sunburned, definitely remove them. You do not want significant energy trying to save a sunburned leaf. New growth is where you want that energy spent. Brown spots or leaf burn on your Jade Plant could also be from too much salts. If you live in an area that naturally has salts or minerals in the tap water, these salts and minerals can cause your Jade Plant to develop brown spots on its leaves.
OVERWATERED JADE PLANTS - Jade Plants thrive with very little care under normal household conditions, when potted in well-draining soil. The soil must dry out before watering again.
Overwatering is the #1 killer of most succulent plants and especially Jade plants.

Great tips! I love my jade plants. So easy going. The only time I had real problems was after I realized a coworker was emptying her water bottle into the plant at the end of most days. 🤦🏻♀️🪴poor plant had root rot and mealy bugs. Took almost a year to get it back in shape.
Glad you were able to figure out what the problem was and save it. Silly co-worker!!! Hope you have a safe and successful year my dear! Happy New Year! Take care, Mary Ellen

This video is amazing!
Like everyone else has said, its one of the few videos/articles that actually show examples of all the different cases so its actually super useful!
Yay! That make me so happy!!
This is exactly the video I’ve been looking for! I’ve recently inherited a Jade Plant and just about saved 1/3 of it due to dark, drooping leaves, and have noticed some stretching and white spots in the soil. Will be using the tips in this video to save and strengthen what I have left. Thank you 💙
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video! It has so many images and samples of issues that no other video has (which makes it so hard to figure out what is wrong since there's nothing to compare with beyond words). Off to go save my jade plant now!
You're so welcome!
That was excellent and super thorough. I can’t see what there would have been to dislike. Those 74 must be jealous. Thank you for all the information! So glad to have found your channel! Subscribed :)
haha thanks Sue. I don't get it either, but to each their own I guess. Thanks for your kind words of encouragement! It really means a lot. Thank for watching and supporting!
I greatly appreciate how in-depth this video is. My Jade Plant has black spots on it, and I had no idea why. It's just a few spots, but it looks like they are caused by water drops and being in bright light. I also propagated a small branch I found, and it has white spots or bumps. This video is super helpful. Thank you so much 🙏🙏
I wish there were more in-depth videos like this one. 😊
This may be the most informative video I’ve ever watched. Thank you so much
Yay! I’m so happy. Thanks so much for watching💚

Hi Moody Bloom, great tips about the Jade Plant. You have a very informative channel, thank you for sharing.
Wish you have a wonderful day. Stay safe and healthy, dear friend.
Thanks so much for your support dear! It really means a lot!
You sure know everything about the jade plant..i definitely overwatered ..will try to safe it with all your suggestions and advise, thank you!!
A lot of trial and error when I was a new plant parent. I figured out how to make them happy and wanted to share the info. Ince you get things down your plants will thrive. And overwatering is super common. The good news is you figured out how to fix it! Hoping it grows healthy and beautiful!! Take care!
This helped a bit! I think mine is underwatered and needs more light- the leaves are dark brown, shrivelled and crunchy while the plant is curling to one side. I was really nervous about overwatering so I watered them sparingly ( which the seller told me to do, so meh...). I'll deep water it tomorrow and make adjustments on the growlight i'm using! Thank you!
I hope they recover quickly! You can always get an inexpensive moisture meter to be sure. I think there is a link in description. They are super helpful if you are unsure about watering. Have a wonderful day!!
This is excellent. I watch a lot of videos, both on terrestrial and aquatic plants, and this is the best I've seen yet. Well done!
Wow, thank you John! That really means a lot!
Wow, you are so helpful! I’m treating my meal bugs and fingers crossed. I learned sooooo much. You’re a great teacher. ❤️ 🌵
Glad it was helpful! I hope you have success treating them!! They are awful! Thanks again for your kind comment!
This video covers everything you need to know about jade plants!
Yay! Glad it was helpful!
Straight to the point. Loved this! I was given an elongated branch cutting and stuck it in soil. It's growing normally now but the poor cutting is "top heavy." I have it propped up against a chopstick. I don't know what to do next
If it is top heavy you may need to cut off the top. Check out my other Jade Care videos for propagation tips. Thanks for watching!
Great informative video. Super! I continue to lean about this plant.
Yay! I am so glad it was helpful for you Isabel. Thanks for watching!
Like 2. Love a a beautiful luscious jade plant, always had one at my parents front and back door, must get a few more have some on the back veranda but need one at the front door too I think. Happy New year Mary-Ellen hope you are having an amazing 2021!

Thank you so much, now I know where I’ve been going wrong with my jade plant

Awesome video. Extremely informative and detailed. I need this type of guidance for Gardenias.
Wow! Thanks so much for your kind words!!
Thank you so, so much!!! I love my Jade girl and she’s struggling. Just took everything apart, cleaned off the roots and can see which ones need worked on. Letting them dry out and will repot in a pot that has drainage holes. Thanks again!!
I hope they improve!! Take care!!
Very thorough. You didn't mention that there are gold cultivars of Jade plants...perfectly healthy. (Crassula 'Hummel's Sunset') Such cultivars arise from natural variation/mutation, so some people will have plants that tend toward gold that are fine.
Yes, sorry I should have included that. I do have a a Jade variety video which covers many Jade plants here: ruclips.net/video/Jpsd8k0OHNA/видео.html if you want to check it out. Thanks so much for watching Alan and taking the time to comment. Hope you are having a great week!

Hello! Really great care tips for your jade plants. Will try your spray mixes for ours. Thanks for the great information.
Take care,
Rob
Awesome!! Thanks for watching!
Like almost everyone has already said, this video is just the best! Very helpful, concise and pertinent info all us jade owners can use. I "favorited" it and will use it as a guide. BTW, I did it again. What? OVERWATERED the jade. It's so easy to do! Thankfully, not a lot and I only had to remove a couple of blackened leaves. Someone else said it best: When it comes to watering, think of it as a large cactus. Because in essence, that's what it is. I find when you follow that guideline, you won't get into trouble. Thanks again for a great teaching video. 😊
Oh, another thing. I wanted to compliment you on that healthy old jade at first appearing at 17:22. What a big, healthy monster. Obviously, you've given it a lot of great care over the years.
Thank you Dale! Cheers!
Yes, and keep an eye on the leaves. They will tell you when they need water. Better to underwater a jade than over water! Thanks so much for your kind words Dale.
I have several jade cuttings from a friend. There are brown spots like that of edema s in your video. At first I though it was from birds pecking on the leaves, but the brownish spots are on the new growth as well. Is there any way to cure them? Does the edema spread to other cuttings as I have planted all the cuttings in different pots sharing a big tray. Hope you can shed some lights.
Once the leaves have swelled from edema and browned, that will stay. You can just remove those leaves if they bother you. It shouldn’t spread to other cuttings. Overwatering will be the reason other cuttings get them. We had a ton of rain here in So California this winter and a lot of my plants were just drenched. Many developed the brown edema spots, but seem to be thriving now.
Hallo from Thailand, my friend :-)) You take care so wonderful for your plants. I am, as always, very happy to be able to watch a great video of you again :-)) Best regards to you and another wonderful day :-))

An excellent video giving very detailed information on caring for jade plants and discussing the problems and pest they can incur. My brother lived in Vancouver and grew many huge jade plants in his backyard. I enjoyed viewing until the 20:56 end and gave you a well deserved thumbs up #122. Thank you for sharing my friend.
Thanks so much for your support Dave! It really means a lot!
Hello, beautiful plants, I hope everyone has good health and I wish you and your family a happy and successful health, have a wonderful life.
Thanks so much for your support dear! It really means a lot!
Thank you, I was very confused why my jade had mineral deposits on the leaves when I only mist with distilled water.
You are very welcome!
Jades don’t ever need to be misted. They don’t like humidity.
@@sdferro926 trasplanting or repotting causes roots to be exceptionally sensitive to root rot. I mist until root development happens.
Also not true, jades will develop aireal roots when they don't get enough water. When this happens, humidity in the air will feed the plant.
Growing plants indoors always puts them outside of their natural environment. You just gotta figure what works for you.
Thank you my jade plant will be happy now.
Wonderful! I am so glad Dan. Have a lovely day!
like 49 here enjoying your tips to take care of the jade plants. Best wishes for the new year, Mary Ellen!

Some people believe that jade plants attract wealth. Is that so? lol
@@nnconfomiststoic888 I have not found that to be true but we will see.

My jades were sooo healthy, including the great of my 20x10 greenhouse. Then I got a pest unidentified. Now I'm saving the handfull I have left, or atleast trying. I had issues after issue. Everyone who knew what my jades looked like, said it they where the healtiest plants they ever seen
Yup mines in mostly indirect light, stretch Armstrong 😂
Happens to the best of them!! Happy Sunday Cojoe!
@moody blooms thank you so much for this video. I recently got a tricolor jade and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I thought I was receiving a single stem, young plant. It looks as if it was a much more mature prune from a large tree because it forks at the base and it has no leaves on the bottom two inches of the plant. The leaves at the top are all going in one direction as if it was grown laying on its side. It also has browning at the very edges of the leaves and from your video, I think it must be because the grower was using a hard water or something. So here's what I've done....I let the plant sit for a few days before repotting it just so I wouldn't shock it. When I repotted, i hink I put it in a soil that was TOO well draining because it began getting soft, bendable leaves....Iv fixed this and hopefully it will bounce back. I also added a support to straighten the branches and am keeping it with sun to its back so it hopefully will start filling out. I really wish sellers would give a sort of background to their plants because my assumption is that this cutting was taken, rooted in water, and then immediately put into a wet moss for shipping. That would explain why it did NOT like a soil that didn't give it enough water.....maybe the water roots just weren't moved slowly enough to be acclimated??? I don't know. Lol. So sorry for the long comment. And thanks so much for the info! Edited to add, the verigation on the leaves isn't very pronounced and there is very little pink. Could this mean that it wasn't getting enough light or is this just normal for some tricolours? Again, thank u!
If a variegated plant loses its variegation it could definitely be from not enough sunlight. Cuttings shouldn’t be in direct sun until they have well-established roots. Otherwise they can sunburn. It definitely sounds like the cutting was taken from a plant that wasn’t rotated. Plants grow and gravitate towards the sun. I like to give them a turn when I water them so that they grow even.
I really like this plants thanks for the info
Glad you like them!
👏👏👏 the best education video LOVE IT
Thanks!
Pinch the new leaves off and watch your jade fill up with leaves, even on leafless branches.
You are correct! They are such amazing plants. The gift that keeps on giving!
I recently had a mealy bug outbreak on mine and so many leaves dropped.. 😩 It was so pretty!
Will those grow back? I think it's on the mend now. 🤞
