I have tried to grow jades for 60 years and they never thrived. finally, I read up on what they want in the wild. I now put my plant in a heavy, shallow, wide clay pot. the roots grow out and not down so much because they need to soak up am much water as the can . my soil is 50 % sandy cactus soil about 25% perlite and 25% regular potting soil. I mist daly to simulate the due that is on the plants every morning and then water fully about once a month all year. the soil is so porous that it nearly drains out right away. I put 1/4 cup on weekly, mostly to keep the soil from blowing away in the fan.. It seems to be working well. I have taken off many cuttings to give to friends and they ( mostly) are doing well , too.

Hey Meriam! You can do it! Start small and see how the plant responds....down the road if you want to prune more you will know exactly how the plant grows after pruning.

@@EverythingPlants I just got back so it will be a few months of TLC before we see if they all make it. The orchids got all the attention. It is better to have to regrow 15$ of jade than 500$ of orchids.

Omg thank you! I have 2 Jade plants I bought from IKEA for about 3 or 4.99 and I’ve had them about 7 years and have transplanted them into larger pots 3 times so you can imagine how large they’ve gotten and I’ve never pruned them, now I think I can try it on one of them hopefully I’ll do a good job. Thank you this video very helpful my 2 Jade plants have branches everywhere. 😅

Decades! I'm old. My biggest jade tree is gorgeous. It's not very big but I started it from a little baby and it's about 3 feet tall nice shape used to stand up straight but last summer it moved trying to follow the sun but I have a question about it: This fall after bringing it inside from our frigid winter, it budded and grew little white and pale violet flowers. They are small and pretty. I didn't know jade plants ever flowered?
@@EverythingPlants a couple of big ones for about 30 years, and then several more that I potted recently from starts.
Over-fertilizing also causes deformed leaves, and putting a raw, uncalloused cutting in wet soil almost guarantees a bacterial infection. Other than that, top-tier video thank you 🙌
Thanks for the info about fertilizer.....but I don't think I give it any yet when those leaves formed.
As for the cutting....it was only demonstration by putting it in soil. I never place them in wet soil. It's always dry soil and I don't water them for a couple weeks.
Jeff I think you speaking on a jade plant would make anyone fall in love with this lovely plant such passion , my both grandmothers grew amazing plants one I really remember was my grandmothers Boston fern it honestly no joke took up a whole corner of her huge living room it was majestic … a lot of people forget you can pay millions on a plant but that’s not what makes the plant it’s knowing everything you can about a plant that makes the plant and your the only person I have seen Dona have justice !
I meant to say on the huge fern in my comment I recently bought one in hopes someday mines like my grandmoms too and I can know it like you know this gorgeous jade !
Thanks so much! Every once in awhile I get a very kind comment like this and it keeps me feeling inspired for more videos. Almost everyone that I talk to about plants has some sort of special relation to a specific plant or a love of the hobby from someone they know. Not only is it a fun hobby to learn, but also holds meaning for a lot of people including myself. Every time I look at my Jade it reminds me of my grandfather. pruning requires such a brave heart. I will try this method to see how my jades reponds. my jades are tall, but does not have many branches.
Hey Zeeshan. Pruning is pretty terrifying the first few times. Start small and see how the plant responds....trust me it won't die lol Once you see the new growth that will give you the confidence to prune again!
I wouldn't remove wrinkly leaves. A wrinkly leaf isn't just a dehydrated leaf. Plants use their old leaves effectively. If a leaf is no more useful, the plant will reabsorb beneficial nutrients in the leaf and will fill the leaf with waste. So, when the leaf falls, it will also take the molecules that the plant wants to get rid of. Just leave the leaf on its own and let the plant do its thing. It'll fall off in a week or so anyway.
I've done both and really haven't noticed any difference. Thanks for this detailed explanation!

Mine looks like yours did 5 yrs ago. It was just a stem with no leaves 6 months ago and now has two branches with 4 nodes each. Just chopped the tips off so hope to get some nice branching before summer is over. Can't wait for min to look like yours.

Thanks Jeff for another very informative video on Jade plants. My Jade is finally big enough for some pruning. It had 4 stems (~25 cm) with good sized leaves, so after watching your video and then rewatching, set to work on it. Removed some lower leaves and chopped off the tops, deciding which way I wanted the top branching to go in the future, per your clear instructions. All the stem and leaf propagations will go in another terra cotta pot filled with succulent blend. With any luck my mother plant will become a “mini tree” 😉

Most of my jades are a good size but not as big as yours. I have a regular (I got a cutting from my mom's large one) and a wavy, two types of hobbit and a variegated jade. They're such a fun plant to grow!!

I just went to repot my jade that got leggy. I ended up with 3 stems. I didn't realize they turn into this! I'm hoping to get 3 out of them now! Hoping for some success

My education of Jade plants was from neglect. Seriously. Leaves would fall off and I neglected the plant long enough for the leaf to begin to sprout. Lol. Now I didn't know about pruning as if it were bonsai. Thanx for that.

Hello! One thing I learned about peperomia is that they like to be bottom watered. They have those fleshy stems that rot very easy if you water from the top.

aloha!! i just finished watching your video on watering jade plants ( i just brought one home that was parked at a friend's a very long time and it look extremely sad..:-< my bad which i need to remedy) and i was so happy with your explanations that i came to this one. I am certain i will get a lot out of it as i did the previous one. One critic i would have about both ones as i am 3 minutes into this one and that being that i find it a little hard to watch when you hold the camera and have that constant motion, even if it's not very strong. I find it distracting and almost "dizzying" !!! 'looking forward to hear your experience to the end~

Beautiful plant. I used to have one that looked like a bonsai tree. I have a small one now that I want to look more like a tree.
What happened to the original one?
@@EverythingPlants It just died. It was quite a conversation piece. Maybe a move to another house didn’t help and different lighting.
I had a jade plant that was a round ball 10" in diameter when I got it. I had it for about 10 years. It was a 5' round ball and the trunk was 3" in diameter. My kittens used to try to to climb up it. One year (In Seattle) it got super cold out. It used to stay outside Spring, Summer, & Fall. Then I would bring it inside and use it as a Christmas tree (super cute). When it got too big to bring inside I had no choice but to leave it outside. It survived several years even when it froze out. I lived in a condo so it was on my balcony and I would put a blanket on it and it did just fine until that one really super cold year that it killed it!! 👿😿I cried!! I even got some corrugated thick plastic to barricade it.
It didn't mind being in super hot direct sunlight at all. The leaves would turn reddish brown, no big deal. They really like a lot of light and even direct sun light. I had morning Sun which is the best for most plants.
I have a new jade that I am trying to get it that big again, but this time I have it planted in semi-hydroponic substrate like all of my 70+ indoor plants, NO SOIL! I have sort of a pons mix of LECA, pumice, red & black lava rock, perlite, and Zeolite! It's growing great!!

When it gets bigger,, set the pot on a plant base with wheels so you can wheel it in instead of trying to carry it it. (just a suggestion as I have had to move big plants before) Or just leave it inside all the time in a bright / semi bright area as My brother did and it thrived fine.
Thank you. You answered a question I have asked everything that allows it and had no answer...when propagating single leaves do you ever water the dirt? That and patience. I have had more leaves that I cut or broke off from a stem shrivel and never root, so I still have to figure out why on that part but I do know that the plants that do start and don't make it beyond a microscopic plant might be bc I didn't mist the soil.
Thanks Laura. I do not water the soil with single leaves until you start to see some roots. You can lightly mist the ends if you want, but don't do it often or your leaf will rot. Thanks for watching!

It's nice 👍💯😁 to know/see that someone else shows respect for the Crassula aka the Jade Plant. Anyone who would butcher one has no idea what they are doing.
They grow 🪴 very slowly. Set it outside this winter 🥶 and watch it Bloom along with the leaves change from green to light yellow/orange with red edges on the leaves.
It's quite spectacular to see.

@@EverythingPlants I presently live in Las Vegas Nevada but when I lived in Torrance CA 🪴 growing the Crassula aka the Jade Plant was a popular plant to see in older home 🏘️ garden's and even along the street planning for the median/sides of the road 🛣️. Every Autumn to early Winter 🥶 they would begin to change color and then Bloom. It was a spectacular sight to see, especially for an advent Gardener like my self.
When my wife and I married then moved to Lancaster/Palmdale CA I found out that they tended to grow 🪴 even bigger and faster provided they were planted on the Southside of the House 🏠. Every October they would Bloom but alas they didn't like the 🥶 of January and did suffer from a bit of cold ❄️ damage. However I wrapped them up with straw and alas "Success". They made a full recovery.

Hello and welcome. I'm not entirely sure but I think regular LED lights can be used as grow lights.....but you'll have to do a bit more research on that one.

Thank you for another great jade video! I have a question if you’re able to answer: I have a leggy stem on my plant because I live in a low light area. Where the longest stretch between nodes is (where I’d like to prune), there’s a tiny new branch bud coming out naturally. If I prune just above that node with the new bud, would the new growth be damaged, or could it still split off into two (three total with the bud that’s growing)? Hopefully this makes sense! I used your previous video on this to branch some areas of the same plant, and they look great. :)
Hey Hanna....very interesting question 🤔 I've never done this and now I'm curious too. I don't see it harming that little bud any and in fact it may just give it a boost of energy. Give it a try and make sure to tell me what happens in about a month time!

I didn't know pruning helped branch out the plant. Mine is pretty tall with only two branches (picture a big Y). I'd love to encourage growth like yours but I'm concerned I'd have to cut it back considerably to avoid it being top heavy and I'd be left with 2 large cuttings. Can a cutting be too big to support itself and root? I hope that makes sense...

It is super scary making large prunes, but trust me jades love it and respond so well. You might cry for a couple days hahaha but after a few weeks you'll see those little leaf buds popping through and then you can breathe a sigh of relief. I have taken large cuttings and literally stuck them back into soil to propagate.

I've got a half dozen largish jade plants and the first few times I pruned them I managed to give away most of the cuttings. Well, I'm prunning again and I'm afraid everyone I know who wants a jade has already got them (from me). I don't know what I'm going to do this time. I was joking to my sister that the cuttings might go into composting and she said no!!! But, she doesn't want any more either.
And this all started with a small $3 plant about eight years ago.
Thank you so much I was watching you how you do propagation. I have Jade plant I made a mistake and knocked it over And it fell apart i Took a piece of it and put it in some water. I did not know that you could put it in some soil. And I Took the rest of the planet and put it in a big pot. I guess I did it all wrong I hope I can Save it I had it for 2 Years
I have tried water propagation in the past and it is successful but it may have a difficult time transitioning from water to soil. Just make sure that when you do plot it back up in soil that it's in a well-draining mixture and don't let it get too dry for about the first couple weeks and then slowly cut back on the watering and it should be okay.

Yes! Jades love being outside. If you do be sure to slowly acclimate it to not only the more intense sunlight, but also the heat. I suggest finding a full shade spot and over a few weeks give it more and more light to avoid burning the leaves

I always say anytime of the year as long as it is actively growing.
the pot of jade i brought is 4 inch and is nice and full. it has 4 or 5 stalks between 3 and 4 inches high and i believe a couple of smaller ones in there that may have been falling leaves propping themselves. my question is should I separate them now or wait until later? im assuming they won't grow a trunk like that in groups in s pot since I've only seen single ones.
If there are gnats around my plants are the sticky tags in the pots enough to trap the gnats? Anything else I can do? Also one of my jade plants has grown long stems 1-2’ feet long. Should I trim them back?
Really helpful video. A couple of questions. Is there a certain depth of soil to grow jade plants in? Can they grow in coir? Thank you in advance.
Are you talking about depth of an unrooted cutting? I usually place it so there are a couple nodes under the soil and it can support itself standing upright.
I've never used coir for a Jade, so I can't say yes or no. Jades need a well drain mix....something that doesn't hold onto water too long.
I may have just missed it, but didn't notice a part about how to thicken the trunk. Is it like bonsai, where you grow sacrificial side branches?
Hey Bradley. You thicken the stem or at least help it along by pruning. Sometimes branches get a bit along and flex quite a bit. I prune all my branches every spring to promote further branching, but to also give the plant a chance to thicken up the stem.
I have inherited a monster jade. I had to prop about three branches up with y-shaped sticks so they wouldn’t break. It was re-potted into a large container as well. My question is, can I just prune off those heavy branches and what is the best season to do so? Also, do you think I should downsize the pot and is winter an appropriate time for that?
It's really difficult to give advice without seeing the plant.....if you want you can send a picture to my Instagram account @everything_plants_ca
I usually water my succulents by just placing the entire pot in a bucket of water and letting it soak for an hour or so, this way I avoid dry pockets that happen with compact soil

I really enjoyed this video !! I have five tall leggy j ades that all have very thick trunks. I am afraid to chop the tops off!!! I do not plan on cutting throuh the trunks, as I dont know i they will stay alive. So Im the opposite side of pruning. I want to know how to prune the stalk !! Is that possible !!

If you are wanting to prune for branching then I would wait until the plant is actively growing. If it's for propagations, then you can anytime 😊
I just watched your video and my jade was only a stem I cut the two little branches it had and hoping it will regrow better! I propagated the cuttings in water! Because I have tried to propagate directly onto the soil and I kill it! Any tips are appreciated! Greetings from Manitoba Canada
I always propagate directly into soil....I let the ends callous over for a day then place directly into dry soil. I won't water for about 7-10 days as there are no roots to soak up the water. After that week or so I will lightly tug on the cutting. If there is resistance then there are roots and you can begin to lightly water near the base of the plant. You may lose a few leaves but not to worry as you'll get new growth soon
I have had this Jade since last Christmas (2023) and it was doing exceptionally well, then one day it drooped over the side of its pot. I don't know what's wrong or how to fix it?

Hello! I don't think there is a correct answer. I like to prune once a year once the new growth in the spring starts just to promote branching. If you are wanting to take a cutting to propagate, I've done it at any time of the year. Generally you should leave the pruning, like you mentioned, in the spring and summer months.
I do the pinching method with the little one. They branch the same.
Is it ok to fertilise the jade plant with fish emulsion or worm castings? It's more balanced in terms of nutrients but also slow release.
I have never tried either of those for my jades, but I don't see any reason not to. I think they are generally a very safe nutrient for houseplants, including succulents. I have watered some pothos with fish tank water and boy did they like that.
After a month's adjustment, my jades do fine with full summer sun.
I just brought one home this week, about a 1 quart size. It has gotten little black dots on several of the leaves. Any ideas what causes those and what to do about them? Thanks.
I am not too sure what those are but I have had thing as well. Didn't seem to harm the plant in any way. I eventually did a prune and no more dots lol
my variegated jade is just now really starting to show its growth - it was infested with mealies when I rescued it, it's now bug-free and actually pushing out a surprising amount of growth. How often would you say you need to repot it? It has several branches, all below 5" tall
This is kind of a tough question to answer because I repot a plant when it needs it. So, when you think it has out grown the pot, needs fresh soil and etc. I think I once had my large jade in the same pot and soil for like 5 years. If it is a small plant, let it grow until you see signs of needing a repot....like roots out the bottom, not growing at the rate it used to, losing leaves etc I hope this helps

I have a young plant, approximately 6” long. It has a very thin trunk, smaller than a pencil. I took off the top leaves hoping it will grow the trunk. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.
I should mention it is in a south facing window where it gets lots of sunlight
So, I have a 30 year old jade that was given to me but the poor thing was tortured before my care so I literally had to chop it and restart it. Now, I have many stems in the same pot but they are thin and nothing like the main trunk that rotted. I prune it often to promote branching of course but, I am confused, is this what will make the trunk grow thick again?

It sounds like a very young plant. It is completely up to you but if you remove leaves the plant might focus it's energy to that area instead of new growth. I would let it contine to grow and mature, then you can start thinking about pruning and removing leaves. If you really don't like the way it looks then take them off! LOL
