I've started my jade plant from cuttings probably 20 years ago, but I never knew that I could control the number and direction of the branches! My plant looks like a tangled briar patch, but now I can make it look more like trees! The branches are quite thick so it has potential. How exciting! Thank you!

I have been growing jades for most of my life and never knew I could prune or direct how it grew until now. I had been staking my weak and leggy plants as they grew longer and longer. After watching a few of your jade how-to's, I can now say that I have successfully removed the staking and ties, pruned up, repotted in cactus/succulent medium and excited to see how I will train my jades from now on. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! 🙂

Very helpful. Especially the part where you showed that you pruned one stem so the new shoots will grow out left/right, and the next stem so the new shoots will grow out front/back. Makes perfect sense but I never thought about it. I successfully got my jade to do some branching out last year, and I think I'm not going to trim it anymore until it gets much bigger. I have 4 stalks in one pot that are only about 7" tall or so. Time to let it fill in this summer!

Three years ago I bought a small pot with three plants with lovely trunks in it. I've nurtured it, and it is doing well, and I now want to split each tree into its own pot and shape them. The problem I have is when I prune, half the time no new leaves grow. I have stumpy areas where nothing has grown in. It's maddening and I wish I knew why this happens all the time.
Also, how long before the trunks thicken up from cuttings? I've some from a friend's plant from 4 years ago, that grow up, but get no thicker. This one has been a challenge.
I remember my grandmother's Jade that she was given in the late 1800s (yes, you read that number correctly) as a birthday present from a family member. It was in a very small planter, kept on a window sill, and it was the 'mother' of so many plants. A cousin took it in 1982 when my grandmother passed away at the age of 98, and it was still going strong even after it was 100 years old.
Now that I actually have a situation with plenty of sun, I am determined to grow some lovely jades in memory of Nana.

But, I killed it as well, by allowing it to become to cold while moving one winter. So I'm about to give up. And thank you for your reply.

Thanks for the info. Was needed. I’ve been very lucky with a jade plant given to me about 4 yrs ago. I even repotted last year and it broke in two. And both are surviving like crazy. I’ve never pruned. Makes sense too. So wish me luck🤞🏻🤞🏻both plants are massive. So hopefully this gets some of the weight off lol.

Excellent video and advice. I've got two bonsai Jade trees (according to me, they're doing quite well) and stacks of smaller cuttings from the last 3 years. The bigger bonsai definitely needs a prune. The branches are a bit long. I hacked away at it three years ago and made a total mess lol. But its come back. Thanks for the tips.

This is my GO TO jade pruning/prop video. I saved it, because I get so nervous every time it's time to manicure the ones I have. It's not often, 😂 so I forget details or seemingly lose confidence in the process. But this is just such a helpful reminder/refresher that 'I GOT THIS' 😂. Everything went so well last year I am trimming back a couple from that year's prop too! I kinda put it off a little this year and my oldest, and first leaf sewn jade from a couple years ago got real top heavy. I hacked away resulting in several new lil jade stems... Tad bummed out, almost took it down to a pile of leaves because I had forgotten that stocks will root too... Though small there are many. 😂
I only hope one year I can get through a chill haircut, and not be all Edward Scissorhands, and rooting from scratch.
If it takes 10-30 years to have a dense lil tree, I gotta get this trunk going....
