I been playing the Ultima series since the mid 80s, and Ultima music has never in my opinion ever had anyone who could come close in instrumental music, till I saw Ori and the Blind forest. Most likely the only title I ever played that's music and storyline digs deep into one's soul.
Thanks. Check out also ruclips.net/video/wCuEUIuTalQ/видео.html and ruclips.net/p/PLUa-WwS_7GQw_lkmslAev1j8oVrArvQQg as they feature sound devices originally supported by the game. I wonder how many SC-55 owners did use the MT-32 emulation mode for games back in the day as the emulation worked in limited games only?
That awesome Dream of Lady Nan track baked my noodle just now - "huh?? Where is that one used? Is it the gargoyle land music and my brain has temporarily left the building? ...oh"
Many said iii iv and v were much better than U6. I say they all illuminating evenly; and very brightly, upon my path through cRPGs. Thank you, Richard - Lord British!
As Ultimas, they probably are. Personally, U6 was great for bringing in new PC players with 256-colors, AdLib-soundtrack, single-scale world, etc. not accustomed to the more crude graphics of the previous ones on, for example, the C64.
Do many people really say 3 is better? I could see people saying that about 4,5 and also Black Gate, but I did not think 3 was held as highly as those.
@@suchiuomizu There are people who love Exodus the most. 3 is in many ways the most influential of them all. But I think the vast majority of players prefer 4, 5, 6, 7, or 7 part 2 the most.
Back in the mid-80's, on my Apple II, I started with Ultima II (instantly fell in love with the game!) and progressed through Ultima III, IV and V. They never did release further Apple II versions--the ORIGINAL platform for the game, and many of us felt betrayed having never got the chance to play Ultima VI and up on our Apple II's. Maybe that's part of the reason there's biased against the U6? Or maybe because the game design and engine changed drastically? (there WAS a unique charm to the very basic design of the older versions that I can even appreciate even today!). Bit of trivia, while no 8-bit Apple II version of U6 was planned, a 16-bit Apple IIGS version was, but unfortunately got canceled.
@@Apple2gs VI was graphically advanced to it’s predecessors, but VII was insanenly heavy. It killed my HD, spinning it constantly, and I spent top dollars to get a machine that could mediocrely run it. The feel of the game really affeected badly by this. So, even VI would have made to AppleII, VII would definitely not.
Just awesome.. love it! Thanks for posting :) Spent a lot of childhood hours playing through Ultima 4, 5 and 6. Origin was on the top of their game. It was a tragedy that they sold out to EA. Listening to this I am also reminded of Ultima Online as it used a lot of the music.
The SoundBlaster OPL versions of these songs are engraved into my musical memory also as Ultima 6 was my first real Ultima experience. PS. Just recently uploaded the soundtrack for the original Ultima Online client (@playlist?list=PLUa-WwS_7GQxwW9mS7NTJQ3AnmTR05pAN). Ultima 7 and 8 are also quite prominent there.
Ultima VI was my first too. Only PC bleeper at the time though there was still plenty of atmosphere with the ambient sounds like fireplace crackles. And Iolo's campfire music 😊
I only had a SoundBlaster when I played this back in the 90s. Quite a treat to hear the midi tracks. As for the game itself, it is massive, even by today's standards. I know I never got 100% of the content. This was also one of the most intricate games out there until ES4 oblivion was released, making it the king for over 25 years in regard to flexibility.
Same here, only had a Sound Blaster with my first U6 experience. I remember trying earlier Ultimas on our C64 but couldn't get involved with them. U6 on a VGA 386+SB did the trick.
@@PekkaLeppaluoto Also, of all the ultimas, U6 was the only one I completed. U4/U5 is brutally difficult. U7 and U8 I wasn't really able to get into either of them, and we do not talk about U9. The first time took me about 2 months real-time. The second time took 3 in-game days :P Were you also able to kill Lord British?
For U6, we had a general walkthrough from a magazine. I think it took us one holiday week to complete U6. We were stuck for a while as the walkthrough mentioned that the cube is in a cave south of Minoc and we just couldn't find it from cave Covetous... Nope, of course tried. Didn't know that killing LB was a thing back then.
I've only completed the NES ports of 3 and 4 and the Lairware remake of 3 for Mac, though I am trying to go through the Master System version of 4. I do have all the DOS versions via GOG and the various compilation discs I've had in the past.
Some sources even state that the music was primarily composed for the Adlib Music Synthesizer card. One of the most notable difference is at 5:50, melody line in Character Creation. The patch chosen for emulation is almost inaudible compared to the MT-32 version ruclips.net/video/eN6Qi919Td4/видео.html&t=1m1s
SC-55 MT-32 emulation is only partial. It lacks the internal memory and 'programmability' so no custom patch/partials can be used... It only have a stock soundbank which émulate the basic MT-32 set of instruments. SC-55 is an expander (it plays a sampled sound with frequency variation and effects) when the MT-32 is a synthetiser (LA substractive synthesis, in which each instrument is defined by an attack patch and up to 8 partials). Many games that supports MT-32/LAPC-I/CM-32L/CM64... uses custom patches and could not play correctly with SC-55 or other expanders.
Yeah. I have two MT-32's, a CM-32L and an SC-88 which also has some compatibility modes, and it is true. Also apparently there were two versions of the MT-32, one which was extra noisy in order to boost the signal strength and another with cleaner sound but less amplitude. Shit to watch out for. :)
I had my friend's copy and a Xeroxed map back in 1991. Luckily it was winter holiday as we played this from morning to late evening using a walkthru from a computer magazine. Got the box plus the clue book now later.

The intro sounds better than even some modern games nowadays...
I've never played Ultima or grew up with this...
Thank you for preserving history. This is historically significant

Great music! Reminds me of my childhood in the 80's watching my Dad play video games.
This bring back all the memories, Thank you.

Check the description about that bonus song.

Thanks to yamaha for soundblaster.
Agree with you. Wish i have roland mt-32 ...

Thanks for the upload, i simply love the Ultima VI soundtrack.
+Darkhan me too. First played it on a SNES in 1995. :)

ultiima vi was composed to be played on a real MT32 and in some parts it sounds very different from the original using sc-55 emulation.

This is very true. Still the emulation works here quite good as U6 uses only those MT-32 stock sounds and no custom patches.

This is great, much appreciated.
sounds so full and rich and ambient
it's 8 bit guy's fault why I'm here
but I -like it- got addicted to it.
Ah Ultima VI the very first game I bought with my own money. 75$ + tax in 1990 and to this day still worth it. :)
I had my friend's copy and a Xeroxed map back in 1991. Luckily it was winter holiday as we played this from morning to late evening using a walkthru from a computer magazine. Got the box plus the clue book now later.
That is pure awesomeness
one of the best Ultima games
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the 8 -Bit Guy
Damm that brings back memories
Excellent synthesizer.
Ultima 6 is so amazing. It puts you in a Man of Steel role only for you to realize later you are actually a freaking Homelander from The Boys.
The glorious music of my childhood. :(
Indeed. Especially the Adlib/Sound Blaster versions ruclips.net/video/El2CdDsY1SY/видео.html
Awesome performance and recording, but MT-32 was better if noisier.
Yes, the SC-55 is a bit "cleaner" sounding.
I love this soundtrack!
now this is awesome
I don't remember the camping song being in U6, at least the soundblaster version on PC. It sounds like a song that was in U3 or U4.
It is Dream of Lady Nan from Ultima 5.
Hienon kuuloista settiä.Juur tänään aloitin commodore 128:lla ultima v:een pelaamisen ja kyl on hienot musat siinäkin.
Good memories
thanks
10:55 Dig these choppers, these choppers are real neat. Corn on the cob is one of our favorite things to eat!
Anyone have the piano tutorial for this?
Not really a tutorial but these arrangements should be somewhat easy to follow: ruclips.net/p/PLUa-WwS_7GQwCAKQgDuVv3MSNgn4HQxqU
Why they all end before they actually finish? :/
They're taken from gameplay and that's the way this title changes the music.
7:43 sounds a bit like the Tetris theme
Yes, the used musical scale sounds similar than the Tetris/Russian folk song one.
22:46 stuck note?
Yes, it seems so. Will investigate cause later for future Sound Canvas MT-32 Mode Soundtracks.
Another stuck note 7:07 - 7:16
Anyway, nice music.
Ultima 6 is one of my favorite ultima games. I personally don't think the 7 is REALLY that good as they say.
Nice soundtrack but actually the Adlib soundtrack seems so much better suited to the game. Something too clean here with the MT32.
Agree. The OPL versions have more depth/detail in them.
Is it the SC-55 MkII or vanilla one ?
One of the 1st ones, just the GS logo.
13:36
Now do a dubstep remix
link for dubstep remix!
Ultima 6 is the only game where mt32 and compatible suck :(
Edit: for ultima you should use adlib
Yes, the OPL versions have more depth in them (the links to couple of ones in the description).
it was good untill you cut stones :(
