- In this oil painting tutorial, I'll show you how to paint the moon. You'll learn what oil colours to use to make a moon glow and look photorealistic. I'm also testing a new panel in this demonstration - Belle Arti, multi-ply, poplar wood, gesso panel, which you can find here: pieraccini.com
I'm a professional landscape artist with over 20 years of experience in oil painting. My RUclips Channel is dedicated to helping people learn how to paint in oils. I really believe that everyone can learn how to paint!

I started watching about a year ago. I can not believe how my painting has improved. I get an incredible reaction by the people I do the painting for. Practice really is paying off. Applying the techniques shown in your videos is what has made the difference for me. One thing I would tell people is TAKE YOUR TIME... Photo realism takes time...more than you would ever think. Most of my 18x20's take 130-150 hours... but the results are worth it. Thank you for sharing!!!!
Hi, is there any place where we can see your work on the net(instagram maybe)?
No, I've thought I should have taken pics just to see my own progress. (I really never believed I'd be able to paint something I'd like let alone give to someone else... or SHOW to the public! :) ) What I've been doing is taking pics of family or friends on trips then painting my favorite one. I then give the painting to the person as a gift. So far, no one has hanged them in garages! (I always tell them if they don't like it too much they can hang it in their garage. :) ) They have all been framed and hung inside their homes. :)
I recently started watching these videos and within a year of painting finally created my own photorealistic winter scene using these techniques
ThatOldBiddy thank you
Agree. His lessons improve my painting skills as well. I've been painting for sometime, but suck with landscape. But his lessons helps A lot!
Michael, I LOVE the way you paint and watch your videos to learn how to paint. Thank you so much.

Hi Michael, I'm a Picture Framer and that board is bevelled on the back for framing reasons...to make for a neater finish when pinned into the frame.
Yeeeeees !!!!????...great my friend,..
Awesome sir
Please consider a painting with the full moon and a moonbow. Excellent work here with the lighting effect, it shimmers.
U are great artist... Thnk you for sharing your style... It helps me improved a lot...
Thank you. Liked it, cheers
You are the great artist👍
You have a amazing talent.... I love to wach your vídeos.... I learn to much...
good after none michal i love your work
Wonderful. So realistic. Mashallah
Very nice ,
I love your art works!!
very interesting and beautiful. Looking forward to continuing
Goooooooooood!!!!!!! Super Michael!
Great vid! keep in mind that the factory gesso finish is completely sealed when you do an acrylic block-in. You lose the tactile feedback of how oil paint will respond to the panel, how it moves, soaks in, stains the gesso etc.... One is actually painting on a plastic surface after an acrylic block-in. Something that new painters won't really care about.
Outstanding lesson, including the music.
Such an informative and enjoyable tutorial, love it, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your artistic gifts!
I love it. Cheers Jimmy.
Michael, this would be a GREAT tutorial for your school, along with a moonlit River Wye below.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH! THANKS FOR EVERYONE❤
The chamfer at the back of the panel seems to me as an aid to prevent paint build up between the panel and the easel or in your case the wall. It creates the separation so that one can paint edge to edge with comfort.
If that is not the perfect moon painting music, then I don't know what would be.
Muy bonito
Super👍😍
excelente trabajo, saludes desde COSTA RICA
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹❤️😍
beautiful
Hi Mr Michael, for me, this moon is very very beautiful, final result fantastic... But, I don' see very well what color you use under white.. Congratulations, at next🙋♀️

Fantastic me inspira a pintar una marina nocturna, ojala me salga algo parecido. 😀
Hey, Micheal!
It would be interesting to see you paint a landscape without a photo reference. Im a painter myself, and the best paintings are most of the time out of my own imagination and intuition. Some of your videos are super, but a little more info on how you mix colors and find the right value would be great.
Keep up the splended work, Micheal.
Eleo Jay
A painting should be planned out...artists spend so much time taking photos and such to obtain material for a composition...many go out plein air painting for a studio piece/s...
Cannot sit and paint a realistic or even just good composition from the air. .
He has many videos in his earlier vlogs where he covers his colors and mix.
What makes an artist's work unique is their brushwork...and color mixing...(choice of hues and how mixed)..
This is very individual..no one can learn color mixing and values from another...you must know color theory and decide on your palette...once you've obtained your palette...mix and get to know your colors...
Values...its best if having difficulty finding the right values to have your photo in black and white...then paint it in black and white...gray..
Understand and become familiar with the value scale...with time and practice it will become second nature...
Color is an individual thing...we all see color differently.
Gigi thankyou so much
@@jeffbeaven1118 thank you...
Your blocking looks better then my finished painting,..LOL
Beautiful work sir, love your videos, very inspirational. I may be wrong but If those are pre made panels they look like they are panel inserts for doors etc. the sham fer bit slides into a grooved frame, don't quote me though.
Good
Learned so much about landscape painting and loved your bird painting and learned how you make fur.
God bless !!
amazing
Saludos desde Ecuador !

😍😍😍
I generally sculpt. But you make me want to paint!! Is the online school good for beginners to oil painting? I would have no idea where to start on materials and paints.
I am a very beginner painter, but wonder if these same techniques can be used with acrylic paints?
Beautiful! You blocked with acrylic? Then Windsor Newton oils? What colors in oils?
Hi Michael
Could you please explain the colours you used for the night sky and clouds.
Thanks
José Aldo check out aroze artistic
panama increíble thank
How do you stick the panel you are working on to the surface it is hanging/glued/whatever on? I think that would be great, better than an easel.
Hi, do I see that you use Italian supports, it means that they are excellent?
THANKS SO MUCH !!!!
Please make a video showing how to paint beach sand....I 've been struggling with that a lot.
Thanks a lot Michael....I really think I'm getting the hang of it, spent about 4 hrs painting all thanks to your guidance. Thanks again! Keep painting....
Me encanta
I m beginner Sir I can't do photolistic paintings but I think I will try and can do something
What type of painting do you paint?
Hi Michael, this was very interesting. I wonder, could you tell me what colors you used to create the evening sky, it's quite lovely and realistic. Thank you.
Mix...ultramarine blue..with burnt sienna...add dash of white to check color...before...
😍😍😍❤❤❤
this one painting i real like post more.
beautiful tutorial! anyway can i get the name of the background music? It's super inspired and chill
That's how god would have been made this beautiful world😇😇😇
I think the backside edges for easily grab by finger from the back support board.
Sowmen Chanda check out aroze artistic
Sowmen Chanda the "cradled frame," behind the panel is to give a 3D illusion. Also..it can be hung without a frame.
Joy Pittura i didnt say about "cradled frame". I said about the edges of the back panel board.Michael says in his vedio 0.57 minutes (edges on the back is slightly chamfered)
John tk-Ankit Qaqaqqqa@a
Oddly enough, I have been looking for a place to buy MR MDF here in the states and I'm coming up with nothing. How did you like these panels compared to the MDF ones that you cut yourself?
QUESTION FROM CANADA: What brand, type and size of paint brushes did you use on this painting. AND what type of paint did you apply directly onto the gesso board?
Click on "Show More" under the video description, and you'll see links to his brushes & etc.
He usually blocks in his undercoats in acrylic because it dries quickly, and gives him a good base to begin with. You'll see that the more of his videos you watch. May you have much success in your own painting!
The back is chamfered so it can be fitted into a frame more easily is my guess.
Does oil painting have the same techniques as acrylic painting?
Did you start the first layer with acrylic?
