Thanks for the reminder and kind of push to take care of some snow upgrades now before all the salters are sold and mechanics are booked. Just brought home my new in bed salter, taking it to another level this year salting some private roads. Leaf canvas scheduled for install next Monday! Lets get it!!
I put them flat in my vise and use the angle grinder with a flap disc. First pass under, one to two passes on top and a little clean up under pass to finish. Sharpness test is if it easily peels a fingernail
8 years ago i taught my son lawncare/landscaping. last month he came home and taught me to sharpen blades with a flap disk. A Polish friend of mine saw the all american sharpener and said he can duplicate it. I bought that prototype off him and call it the "all polish sharpener". Kinda funny how it all works. I don't think I would be who I am without all the great people around me
This is by far the best way I've found to sharpen blades without some kind of expensive jig. It wouldn't be effective for badly chewed up blades but if you're not into mowing rocks, give this a try.
Definitely one of my preferred methods for sharpening mower blades...but mulching blades are definitely trickier to perfect with this method due to the curvature of the blade.
Trick for balnacing blades when you don't have a balancer handy. Put a nail in a vertical piece of material and hang it from that. The heavy side will fall. It's not perfect, but it will get you very close.
Awesome. That's alot to sharpen blades tho. They last longer for us. But dif things can factor in. Blade height type of grass. How tall and thick the grass is your cutting. We used to have a few big fields we did every few weeks. Our blades last atleast a week longer now after dropping thoes
i always thought i was pretty good at sharpening blades with a grinder (when i was using a grinder- i had better luck using a grinding wheel over using a flap disc.) but i HIGHLY recommend getting an actual blade sharpener. no matter how good you think you are at getting that 30degree angle with a regular grinder, your not. and its way faster using an actual sharpener. get the rbg 712 OR the all american blade sharpener- you still use a grinder using this device. i use this if i have to sharpen a blade out on my route (it can be used mobile) i use the rbg in my shop. the all american sharpener takes a second to get set up the first couple times of using it, but once you get it dialed its an excellent unit. i also reccomend changing the grinding wheels every few blades you sharpen depending on how much the blades need to be sharpened (when using the all american sharpener)
yeah try to do that on a mulching blade with curve that is a real test of how good you are???!!!!! for me i am struggling to sharpen a mulching blade with curves and I have NOT found anyone that builds a jig for a curvy blade; i have to do some brain thinking to come up with my own sharpen a straight blade is a piece of cake. easy peasy especially with a jig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Brian, nice grinder. Looks like it takes a lot of metal off with each pass. I'm thinking about using my vibrater sander with 100 grit. Because it's smaller, I think you can follow the contour of the bevel on the blade much better. Enjoyed the video!
I've been using the angle grinder + flap disc for a few years now. It takes off very little metal so your blades last a lot longer. Like Brian, I usually sharpen every 8-10 hours and it takes longer to remove and replace the blades than it does to sharpen with the flap disc.
I did great with that disk until a finger came in contact with the disk. Since it is large, the guard was off the grinder. Right through the leather gloves and down to the bone.
Nope, I love it. If you're going with a full dump trailer leaf box, I'd get the 37hp unit. Otherwise, the 18 has been just fine for us. We did a whole separate video on comparing leaf loaders, check it out!
Thank you Brian! I am putting together a set up similar to yours with a dump insert on my F250 with a leaf box. I will go with the 18hp leaf loader to start.
ive never balanced mine .... worked for me for the last 35 years .... i usually only sharpen once though ..... when they get dull, the next time they are wore out ... we have a bit of sand here, hard on blades

@@timtrainer10 Never tried that one or heard of it but the RBG is a good price plus it’s made in the USA. I would go with that one first give you the exact angle every time.

@@BriansLawnMaintenancewell, I think this person knows something about sharpening edge tools. Watching Brian, I'd say he has some gaps. Love watching you Spencer lawn care lawn care juggernaut and blades of grass
I've found it easier to sharpen and keep the blade angle by placing the blade at the bottom of the clamp with the blade perpendicular to the ground.
Hey Brian I took your advice last year and got an All American set up. And now you backed out doing it the cheaper way.
Wow i been using the weong blade disc all this time 😮

Good stuff. Nice work on keeping that angle.
Thank you😊

Worth watching just for the board. Thanks
I personally like using my belt sander...keeps it flat and straight
Basically the same set up I use. Flap wheel, cordless grinder. Been working great for 3 years
What grit do you use?
@@mannyc805 80 grit
@@meegstomtom thank you 🙏
@@mannyc805 any time. I feel 80 grit is fast enough but still makes for a clean smooth edge. And doesn't heat the blades up

Wow that intro song. Surface by Aero Chord. Haven't heard that in years. Very nostalgic.
Hey Brian can you tell us the brand of the disk. Please 🙏
I prefer to sharpen my blades by hand. I don’t take off as much metal this way. You did a fine job though and I appreciate this video.
Plumber Joe knows what is going on 😉👍
A machinist taught me to never remove the backside burrs with the disk, use a flat file and “ back draw” them. Love the Dewalt

What's the benefit of file vs disc?
@@brentotto6193 To remove the burrs, a disc is WAY too aggressive, you just gently file them away.
@@TheR00k1e2 Pulling the file towards yourself, as opposed to pushing away.

That's all I've ever used is a grinder and flap disc. Doesn't take off as much material as a grinding wheel and make them sharper.
