This song was written by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. Grace, of course, delivers a magnificent interpretation of it. Two extremely talented women!
With the taxi gang from Jamaica 🇯🇲 on the rydim track.
Sly Dunbar on drums 🥁
Robbie Shakespeare ( 🙏 ) on 🔊 bass guitar 🎸

Thanx
The older I get, the more I love this song.
"those are the best of the cream" hihi .. this L.P changed our reality forever..
If you are scared of Grace Jones you are scared to look directly at yourself. She posseses what society has tried to take away from us for a thousand years. She is the principle of understanding and a symbol of the self respect required to practice magick or do any great thing. Bless.
Over the top but i hear ya
@@joolspirog you put it a lot more politely than I was going too lol
Well observed, and well said.
I've felt this since I was a kid.
@@goodlife6145 Thank you and bless you
She uses her quirks to her own advantage. She’s intelligent. She is no stupid woman. I think that she must inspire so many women out there to stand on heir own to feet and be themselves unapologetically. Chapeau to her
Grace is a giant warrior for females. Enjoy it.
@@NormAppleton I'm a male. I've liked her since I was ten years old. I hate that 'empowered female" bullshit.
@@Scotty-P Your stale opinion sure was needed and asked for!
@@laneyking2044 My opinion is as fresh as a daisy, sure is needed, and it's totally irrelevant if it were "asked" for or not, owing to it being so valid and needed.
@@Scotty-P some comment: "I think Grace Jones must inspire so many women"
you: "WELL I'M A BOY AND I HATE WOMEN EMPOWERMENT"
Are you recognizing how embarrassing and juvenile your comment was now? Now that it's all spelled out for your dumb @ss?
born in jamica, grew up in new york, made in Paris
she's an international star

you probably dont give a shit but if you are stoned like me atm then you can watch all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my brother for the last days :)
@Randall Billy yup, I have been watching on Instaflixxer for years myself :D
This will always be as fresh as the day it was made. Grace is criminally under appreciated
Iconic is one of the many accurate descriptors of Grace Jones.
As Andy Warhol said: «Grace is perfect». A true artist; genuine, talented and absolutely coool. Love her.
....he truly loved her....
She's such a trip, just a head shot the whole time and she is utterly fascinating.
Karen Plath you got that right.
That Face is Pure PERFECTION! Only Grace could keep u transfixed on just her Face. Her eyes are powerful as is her Bone structure which is why the camera man needs only a headshot.

Indeed! Out of the world!
This was written by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, as "like all the other London punks, I wanted to do reggae." It was included on The Pretenders 1980 self-titled debut album but when the singer heard Jones' version she conceded, "That's how it's supposed to be done
Wow
Grace isn't scary, she's inspirational :)
One of the most gorgeous woman ever!

And thief of music
Jarrel Ely what did she steal?
Jarrel Ely Oh!
"You've made a desperate appeal now save your breath" is my favorite of the many quotable lines on this track. Beyond awesome.
A mi me encanta cuando entrecierra los ojos y dice: tu matrimonio es una tragedia pero no me concierne. Sublime
The original was written by Chrissy Hind for Pretenders. The original is very different. Grace Jones gave it much more of a reggae vibe.
Long live Grace Jones & Chrissie Hynde👌🏼 Why can’t popular music be still like this???? Cannot believe that 41 years have gone by in the blink of an eye 😳 So glad & proud that I lived through these times of decent and honest to good tunes 💚🇮🇪
Grace was so far ahead of her time it was ridiculous! Her band (the Taxi Band) is still one of the baddest of all time IMO!! This track will still be hot 100 years from now...
+Malik Hassan One of the few artists from the outside and do New Wave. She was so freaky that she fit into the scene. WHFS in the last few years in Bethesda played this as they were emphasizing the genre. There were still free form DJs, and some who played nothing but this music.
+rockvilleraven Everything she did with Sly and Robbie during that New Wave period was dead on.
the band that used to back her up are called sly and Robbie a Jamaican based purcussion duo
The Taxi Band and Sly and Robbie are the same exact people.
ok
When the real face is more flawless than THE MASK 😩🙌🏾😍
Doing this for my Grade 6 drums! I’m 13 and I love this song!
Is it Rockschool? I teach drums and it would be a good one to teach my students.
Chrissie Hynde said this version is one of the highlights of her career (she wrote it) and I love that about artists that they acknowledge the brilliance of covers
One of the greatest cover songs of all time in my honest opinion.
Seriously incredible record. Grace Jones is so stylish and real. Love her
Grace Jones WHOLE musical mantra is that she is an artist who draws on ALL POSSIBILITIES of the visual asthestic.
This is why she is one of the most interesting music artist in the world.
The fact that she does not do much blinking of the eyes in this music video, shows that she is in COMPLETE CONTROL of HOW she wants to portray her visual aesthetics for this music video.
PURE GENIUS!
The brilliant Grace Jones and a brilliant cover of the Pretenders song!
And the B-side was a pretty interesting take on Joy DIvision's "She's Lost Control".
Whoa, she is so spellbinding...could just stare at her singing like this for a long time and be totally captivated. What an artist 💋
Briliant...40 years later and still outstanding and much better from most of today!
Grace Jones, the camera can just stay on her face and you can't look away. What an ARTIST. Heard she wrote all her own songs. Too much talent for one person to have: Sings, writes, looks spectacular, stage presence galore, had lots to say about how her videos would be done. Did I mention I love her attitude? She had something to say.
Lori Romano I was glued to her face the whole video, you are so right! She is mesmerizing
She may have done some or a lot of her own songwriting but this is a Pretenders song written by Chrissie Hynde, though this version is arguably better. Demolition Man was written by Sting for her even though The Police recorded a version soon after.
Thanks for the information. I need to check to see if I can find the Pretender's version. Love the Pretenders.
And what's really important to realise here, is that having the single camera shot in this video...you can actually SEE Grace Jones ACTING here, the visual expression is in her face and how she can change the features of her face for LONG moments of visual facial expressions.
This type of visual work reminds me of the way Andy Wahol would work, when he had long visual expressions in his films, but being a music video here...The visual is not done TOO MUCH to the extreme in the way Andy worked.
A mention has to go to Sly and Robbie for building a brilliant backing track - perfection.
I love her! She helped define music videos of the 80's and inspired many singers to become visual artists. A shame she never won a Grammy for one of her epic music vids, especially One Man Show.
....she was nominated for a Grammy for One Man Show....in the Best Long Form Music Video category....but...she lost to DURAN DURAN who admitted to her that they stole ideas from HER....she then DEMANDED that they give her....their GRAMMY....everyone steals from her....
Grace will be 90 years old and still awesome
she is perfect, pefect face and lips
So beautiful. The best of the best. Bigger than the music and time herself. Her delivery and ability to arrest the stage. So captivating.
unique . 2016 and still you can play it like it new .
Better than that
even in 2018
2019, still.
2020 01/01/2020
It's Nov. 2020 we still here 👌🏾❤️
42 years old baby...still sounds fresh. The reggae beats do it for me.
This is the song cats sing when you want to cuddle them
Very that
:)))))))))))))))))))))))) purrrrrrrrfect
She wasn't a just a singer, she was a performance artist. She sometimes took it too far but she was a unique talent and that is rare indeed.
So iconic and so beautiful💖
she's beautiful.
Genius Lady...Miss Grace Jones.still hot at the age of 67..Still Hot & legs that go on forever...x
Grace the Godess! Only the likes of sly and robbie can convey those Jamaican roots! Shes gorgeous...
holy shit, this is so good, such roots reggae
Sly and Robbie. If you get them in on a track you know its going to end up with a killer groove
+patrick byrne No doubt!
The Pretenders never got the credit they deserve for writing this!!
Totally agree
And…let’s not forget the fabulous, inimitable, stunningly beautiful, multi-talented, inspirational, brave, unique, fashion Queen….Grace Jones!!😍🥰👑♥️🌎🥂🐉✌️💪🏻🏙🤩
Grace Jones. Quite a woman. Quite a singer. Strong. Live with it.

she is a diva
good singer and she is good in performances
Wonderful song she is really a super star make me to remember the 80’s back in the days in Gambia west Africa!!!!!
She is so beautiful!
she looks like a mask, shes perfect OMG
Everything is perfect in this video. The music, the lyrics, the rhythm, his voice, the image, the little choreography, his gestures, his pauses, his look. All
HIS? Grace is a female
@@blkcoverboy1049 excuse my bad translation. Of course Grace is a female
Wow. This is the first time I've ever heard one of her songs on my own (was too young when this stuff was actually being made). Gotta say, I am super impressed. Time to look up some more! :)
This was originally performed and written by the Pretenders but I get what you mean.
Gawd she’s just so damn stunning, along with her creativity she just so damn good! I was born in the early 80’s and got to grow up with her image all around! She’s one of my role models!
Wow!!!! She was really something else , unbelievable woman 💕
I first hear her in 1979, the WARM LEATHERETTE album. A few of us would gather together in a small room in our hostel, and this was the fav album. There was also a little something we shared to enhance the musical experience. I still admire Grace to this very day. The vid of "living my life" from her one woman show is also fantastic.
I love her Do or Die Single, one of her earlier songs.
This song is a Great Disco Anthem Song and the longest 12" version of this song, is ( in my opinion) one of the best 12 inch versions of a single song, EVER recorded.
One of my favorite songs from then. Grace was a pioneer. Helped by Sly n Robbie, of course.
You can't get bored of Grace she has a very unpredictable and unqie style the lady is a legend
I somehow missed this song in the 80s. Heard it for the first time on Sirius XM First Wave a few weeks ago and have been hooked ever since.
Night Clubbing is one of the most innovative albums of its genre. X :)
I still love it today, one of the most dog eared vinyls I own!
This is from Warm Leatherette though
OMG. She is so beautiful she takes my breath away. No wonder she was a bit nuts, being so utterly physically perfect has got to make people react to you in strange ways
That old Sly and Robbie magic still sounds fresh, as does Grace's distinctive vocal. Imaginative video too. Love it!
THE GODDESS GRACE JONES IS my GODDESS❤ LOVE HER SHE IS THE BIG ARTIST❤2024❤
Fantastic work !!!! Master piece . Artwork
One of the most beautiful women of all time
I absolutely adore Grace Jones. To this day she's still stunningly beautiful and intriguing.
Brilliant cover of a brilliant original. Long live Chrissy and Grace.
lekkki1 this is an original no?
Stunning video, beauty at its best, let alone the singing. Hugely underrated.
When reviewing her next single, one of the critics in the music papers described her as being a Dalek on this one because of her cold, deadpan delivery of most of it. Made me chuckle anyway, and good record all the same.
Loved this first time out. I cannot believe that this was nearly 40 years ago. Timelessly brilliant! What a one off she is.
Still listening in2022 ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾🤩🤩🤩
She is a True Living ICON!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Not only is the song great, but the video! It's just a single unbroken shot of Grace and her variety of expressions. Personally, I think it's still pretty interesting to watch, despite how bare-bones the imagery is. Nowadays, it'd be overly complicated with shots of a city or crowds or everything she's describing laid out in full detail or something. The way it is here, it's intimate, like a "this is the last straw, here's the deal, man" type of thing.
You're right but most people in music don't have this kind of electrifying persona that allows one to keep an audience's interest with nothing but one, long close-up. They work with what they've got.
eggory absolutely.. She can hold my attention so well , just her eyes are so mesmerizing. I can't even get over it
The lights in the background, what she was wearing and grace herself really make it look cool. There's alot of other things going on too like the camera gradually zooming in at times, the way her eyes were looking, the way she was moving her head, the part when she put the mask on, the poses, etc
Ohhhh, Flower_Gemini I soooo agree with you! LOL! I used to be so frightened of this lady when I was young, but at the same time so intrigued by her uncanny presence, behavior, demeanor and attitude. It's just so fascinating how her refusal to conform to the industries standards that so many women (especially Black women) fall victim to actually catapulted her career back in her hay days. 30+ years later as a grown woman seeking to live my life beyond the cookie cutter automatons called human beings, I now have the greatest appreciation for Grace Jones as a woman who decided to personally define and trademark her own unique individuality. To top it off, my adult eyes now see how drop dead gorgeous she was and still is at the age of 60 something... Hail to Queen Grace Jones!
Amen!
Well played sir , n aw fukn day cunts
To LM , well said sir , here here , and so say all of us !
For me...Grace Jones as a Black Women in Popular Music is an integral part of Black-American Civil Rights ( even though she was Jamican and has European Connections); in that here is a Black Female Artist with her own UNIQUE indiviuality, that does NOT CONFIRM to world-wide wide social representations of the Black Female Music Artists.
She paved her own individuality that gives voice to Black Women ALL OVER THE WORLD, in living and creating in your world, BY YOUR OWN MEANS OF EXPRESSION...AND NOT WHAT WORLD- WORLD SOCIETY EXPECTS YOU TO BE.
This represents Black Female Power to the Max.
A very slick version of an already fantastic Pretenders song, with a generous sprinkling of magical Trevor Horn dust. Grace is an incredible artist.
Trevor Horn was great on these productions but for me the real magic here is the Sly & Robbie backing track. Sadly Robbie Shakespeare passed away yesterday - a real pioneering musician who has played and or collaborated with pretty much everyone. RIP
Actually Horn had nothing to do with this one. This album was done by Chris Blackwell and the late Alex "Seven & The Ragged Tiger" Sadkin.
Loved her then, love her now 🥰
A true artist as well as a true warrior! Never gonna forget you babe! 😋
This song is my song because I keep being dragged into others drama and I had enough of it the look on Grace Jones face is the look I want to give to those ppl who kept dragging me to solve their dramas
I agree with you. Many people would put me in their drama too as if I'm suppose to be their mediator. It took a toll on me mentally because I'm an empathetic and sympathetic person. When some of interventions didn't work, I gave up and told my family and friends to save their drama for a therapist.
Grace is a visitor from outer space
The Queen of the Performance Art!
Couldn't believe this in 1980 when it came out. Complimented what was a brilliant year for music. This still sound so original, she's it just brilliant and she still is producing brilliance especially with her last album.
Such an amazing performer! Beautiful !!!! Island Bad Girl Savage before Rih Rih ! And the drums are everything!!!
I loved you then, Grace Jones as I do today! WHAT A VIDEO .... that face, those eyes ..... this, and every song .... THE BEST! When I listen to you, I am 22 again - - - it's the 80s and I'm dancing in NYC at the Roxy, Limelight, or the Paladium.
Grace's unique and individual ! Gorgeous Grace -- was and is and 60 years... long live the Queen grace Jones!
Yeah I'm not scared, I'm in awe always of her beauty, her talent and how wonderfully unique she is. Maybe that scares people sometimes, haha 💗💗💗
One of my favourite songs of the 80s and l have say about a million miles better than the original
Always my favorite Grace Jones song
The mask metaphor is brilliant for this song. She is COOOOOOOOL.
In the early 80s, I seriously and honestly thought she was some kind of alien, back when I watched her as a kid. I thought, "Grace Jones is NOT. OF. THIS. EARTH."
She still has it, the mask
@@albertagibinik3436 ....it's an ongoing theme in her work....she has always rocked masks of her face...her 1st creative director...Richard Bernstein...turned her on to it...then her next creative director...and baby daddy...Jean Paul Goude took the mask theme even further with her...in the video...Demolition Man...all the clones of HER....are actually wearing masks...of HER....
so FABULOUS thank you Grace
A fascinating performance with the mask in the beginning of the video... she was really fantastic
Yes indeed still as beautiful as can be! I cant wait until she performs in L.A!!
I love her music but I don't remember having ever heard her speak. I just watched a few interviews with her and she has a sexy ass voice. You go Grace! :)
