That line blew me away, aged 13. I still hear it , and live it. There were very few female role models who lived like I wanted to be, back then. Her whole lifes work is timeless, the music, her image, attitude. I was a child and seeing her being interviewed and herself, rejecting the polite obedient , predictable woman guest role, on TV. People thought she was shocking! It was cool for men to be anarchic or rocknroll, but if a woman did it, Wow!! people shat themselves! I recognised that it was pure fear, in their reaction to Grace. And I fell in love with her for being so purely herself and unafraid.
I saw GJ in concert June(?) early 80's in Houston TX @ the old(now torn down ) Music Hall.. She was fricking fantastic.. Wore stiletto heels with microphones build into the tip's of the heels. As she walked /climbed onto big black boxes - stacked into a staircase - her heel mics synced with the drum beats. She slayed the audience. I saw her another time in a parking lot of a gay bar (then Heaven ) ..she still rocked it. She IS on ANOTHER level.... " feeling like a woman looking like a man...." that sums it ALL up...
This was the beginning of the eighties and I remember having the tape at the time aged 16 , it was like , ok this is another level , I wasn’t wrong , I knew it would never age and it hasn’t
i was a Supervisor at a taxi company .... Grace talked to me about a cab that had been covered in lipstick, I wasn't there but the driver was very annoyed. Grace was very charming
