Why isn't the voltmeter connected in parallel? We connect voltmeters in parallel in the UK.

The voltmeter is connected in parallel to the bare resistance wire. As the jockey is tapped from left to right, length of bare resistance wire increase and hence its resistance. Thus, voltmeter measures the pd across the segment of the bare resistance wire. Ammeter is connected is series to the circuit to measure varying current with varying resistance.
