Just a note, they blocked out the book title in the music video for a reason. They realized later that the book included some horrible stuff they didn't agree with or want to be associated with. Mark confirmed this. Don't read the book for any clues. It's like the exact opposite of what they'd want us to do.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but on the opening frame where it shows Ned in the window. It says above him, “have you seen me?” This could either be the bishops trying to find Ned, or he is truly missing. We know that Ned represents Tyler’s creativity.

In Shy Away, most Josh scenes, you see Josh drumming with his mouth totally wide open. Now we know why. Cause now he opens his mouth with blue superpower. In Shy Away I thought it was odd cause he never drums with his mouth so open (no drummer drums with their mouth open like that!)....

I think it's worth noting that in Shy Away, when Tyler builds up to the last chorus, you can hear a second layer of him singing alongside himself but a screaming voice like when he ran away in Jumpsuit. It's like that fighting, rebellious version of him is trapped under the surface

I had a similar theory that clone-Josh was turning Trash, and Jim, and Tyler into toys because they stand for positive things (Trash - creativity, Jim - happiness/companionship, and Tyler - getting better mentally? Taking care of yourself?) and so the bishops want to take those things away because in a place of depression/anxiety/etc like Dema those things do not go together with the „vibe“ of the place. I know it‘s all over the place, and I am not a native English speaker, I hope to get my point across :)

Then clancy is gone and was a main source of information we had gotten. Then the website and all the letters were deleted.

There is a big connection between Choker and Leave the City. The first thing I noticed was in Leave the City, "They know that it's almost over." And now in Choker "I know that it's over." Listening back, there are either reverse samples of Leave the City in Choker or using the same production effects in parts.
I have two theories that either in Choker Tyler is saying he choked his last chance to get out of Dema. That he feels like the fight is over and accepting defeat. Or that in Leave the City when he says "They know that it's almost over" is in reference to the bishops. Tyler could be accepting it how it is because he knows Dema will soon be over and it's not worth the fight because he knows he'll make it out.
I have other theories with this connection but would love to hear what other people hear.

  • @xavierferguson9607

My theory: (I might make a video on it myself)
Once Tyler was captured by Nico at the end of Levitate, Josh went back to be with him in Dema, because he chose being with and there for his friend over the freedom of Trench with the Banditos where he could have stayed. (I think this makes the story SO powerful) This is where they were in Shy Away
Choker, I believe is some time later, and Josh has become so enticed and focused on making the propaganda that he has to, and falls onto the Bishop’s side, almost completely forgetting the Banditos. I think Tyler did this too, and he is nervous because right before the events of Choker, he had a spiritual awakening of some sorts. It’s like he is nervous to go back to Josh, and say “listen, man. I can’t do this anymore, I wanna choose freedom” and Josh ignores him and pretends like he doesn’t know him (drum scene) because he knows that something awful will happen if he rebels against the Bishops again, and is terrified of that.
Tyler decides that he can’t save Josh, and tries to run with Trash, representing Creativity which is the ultimate freedom.

Exactly! This reminds me of March to the Sea, in the end it says "so then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day, and once again I will be in a march to the sea" - he was stuck in a bad pattern, he is freed, but then he returns to where he started. Also the day vs night analogy in the Vessel album. This apparently endless and cyclical internal war is a recurring theme in their songs.

    Another big question is:
    where is Ned?
Edit: since Ned represents Tyler's creativity, the fact that he is missing could mean that Tyler has lost his creativity? But then there is Trash, a new character that embodies the power of imagination and the capacity to create something so big that can transport you to a new world (like music). We saw him flying around in the Shy away MV, at what appeared to be an imaginary world that was progressively falling apart. But in Choker, he is just a little toy that Tyler is trying to get (or to get back). So maybe Tyler is trying to get back his power to create independently? And Dema (through Josh) stops him.
Well, as you said, I guess we'll have to wait to understand more. As always, thanks for the amazing content!

I don't know if someone else has said this, but here's my theory for the "Choker" music video: When "Josh" turns Tyler into a bobblehead, he literally becomes a product of DEMA. Therefore, it's a metaphor that Tyler is just a toy that the bishops use for their own pleasure and to get what they want. This could be why it seems like Tyler and Josh are being held against their own will in the "Shy Away" music video.

It's probably just me but when i saw "keep your sunny days" the first thing my brain thought was "there's Keons written inside" but i can't find any other anagram than this. I can't stop thinking about it because Keons is Clancy's bishop and the first thing we found out about the album is that it's an anagram of "clancy is dead". Also the fact that the song is called chocker and refers to smoke makes me think about "choke on smoke", the lyrics that named Keons. Don't know, again probably it's just me (also sorry english is not my first language but i had to tell someone about this)
EDIT (after like 5 minutes): i was rewatching the video explaination about the lyrics and the pop song professor says that being a chocker doesn't seem to represent tyler's type of anxiety and i agree, i would describe Clancy as a chocker instead. He escaped Dema, he almost arrived in Trench but then Keons brought him back in a sneaky and treacherous way, different from the violence that characterize Nico, which is exactly the way i would descrive that feeling when you're about to do something but your anxiety teels you that it's dangerous and it's better to stop and turn back to your comfort zone

Real Bear Media put on Twitter the book has no significance to the story - the views in the book aren't representative of top - they actually wanted to have Josh reading All My Sons but they couldn't get whatever license they needed to put that on film
Also, Trash and the coffee mug disappeared from live.twentyonepilots.com right as the Choker video was released - so whoever was "manning" the live website would have taken those two objects to the toy store

the clone josh theory works as well of we look at shy away beyond the scenes video. In the end, when tyler and josh start joking on the phone, tyler says he “needs a drummer” and that josh was fired because he wouldn’t do a playback, maybe it has some relations to josh’s story on SAI

2 little easter eggs I just noticed in the video, in the beginning when Tyler goes in the store next to the entrance you can see Ned, and above his head you can read “have you seen him?”, maybe It’s a hint on Dema trying to catch Tylers creativity. Also in the beginning we can see three dices in a frame, with a six that can resemble the bishops and it’s on top of a dice with the 2 and 3 side showing, wich is the old twenty one Pilots logo. Maybe this is the sign of the bishops defeating top.. these are just my toughts, hope I reach someone else too. :)

Here’s my theory: Josh was a symbol of the banditos in the trench album, and he was the one who brought Tyler out of dema. I think that bishops have disguised themselves as Josh in order to lure Tyler back to dema without him ever realizing it. In doing so they were able to capture everything that makes Tyler happy (aka. the dragon, representing creativity, and dogs). Tyler is starting to catch on that this is what is happening, which is why he went to go steal back his creativity. But as the music video shows, Tyler was captured in the end and now he is unable to bring happiness and hope to the rest of the world. I think that is ultimately the goal of the bishops in this era.

After playing Leave the City then this, I reckon the “mmmhmmm” sound is the same as the “o-ver” sound in leave the city. This song seems to be about what it’s like for it to be “over” for Tyler from Leave the City. The thing that seems “almost over” in Leave the City is the flame whose “burning is so low its concerning”, and Tyler has indicated that flame is an embodiment of his faith in an interview. This song seems to imply that he’s now choked (like a flame/faith being choked out), and the result is that he doesn’t bother anyone, or make demands, but is simply driven by circumstance. This could also indicate there are creative messages he wants to include in his songs being “choked” by the music industry, and he’s afraid to communicate those messages, but “needs to move right now” since nobody can “cosign on his fears”, and he knows this may “change his circumstance” but he doesn’t care. Ultimately I think the song is about how he’d rather communicate the message of his songs that matters to him, rather than be turned into a marketable toy-like gimmick by the pressures of the music industry, and his own fears/the world/Dema.
Also, as for the dragon, it may embody the coldness referred to in the judge (“I know my soul’s freezing”) and in “Oh Ms Believer” (“We get colder as we grow older... your twisted thoughts are like snow on the road”). If so, this again seems to be a reference to faith going cold (as it is in other songs), and an entity who makes faith go cold (which could be “[Tyler] or the devil” if the Judge is anything to go by). Thematically it would make sense if this dragon represented some controlling ominous entity behind Dema, and it would fit nicely with the parallels you can get from Christian sources, where Blurryface would parallel the "flesh" (the sin side of our hearts), Dema would parallel the "world", and this Scaled and Icy dragon would parallel the "devil".
Those are my two cents, hope you all have a lovely day and God bless :)

    • @cjson
      @cjson 3 года назад

Also, the last lines of the song seem to be about the benefits of self-correcting some "self-sabotaging" problem which is “like” a “splinter”, where removing the splinter is easier when you’ve got the pin and you can go deeper into the issue to get it out.
But (this is a more ominous take) this same "self-sabotage" problem may be “like” a “shadow” which, if uncorrected, starts small, but only grows taller and bolder and stronger, and any attempt to turn back “only blinds you” (because the problem is still there).
The ominous take would make sense in light of previous songs, since “driving towards the morning sun” in Taxi Cab is a good thing (since then “all your blood is washed away and all you did will be undone”), and when “the sun is riding window sills” in Semi-Automatic that’s a good thing (meaning you are “saved for one whole day”), and when “[Tyler’s] shadow grows taller along with [his] fears” in that same song, that’s a bad thing. I think he is afraid of himself turning from the sun (causing his fears to grow with a hardened boldness like shadows), but “choker” is about what happens when you do. The ending may therefore be a description of what happens when self-sabotage chokes your faith, and you “fall away” from the sun "forever", and "the rearview only blinds you" (since Tyler's previous songs indicate this is a significant fear of his e.g. "Goner"/"Fall Away"/"Doubt" etc.).
Again, could be wrong, but hope this helps you guys :)

With your explanation of how other beings could be now in our world and taking people to DEMA gave me some ARG (Alternate Reality Game) vibes and made the music video so much better. I infer that it's could be guided 'Alternate Reality', scripted by Tyler, so basically it is 'Unfiction' within this new album. To quote a fellow reddit user directly "Unfiction is an umbrella term for a fiction which insists that it is real, existing within the same world that You or I exist in." Which could be exactly where Tyler is going with this

The only thing that really still confuses me is that Josh is wearing a yellow-cuffed shirt and still using the Trench drumsticks. In Shy Away his Trench sticks and yellow shoelace was like a hint to how Josh escaped/is not under bishop control and now trying to help get Tyler out. and tyler has his old clothes from Trench/no yellow to symbolize that he is captured by Dema and still under their control. Its just interesting that Josh would habe those little hints of yellow and still be a bishop in disgues like is it to give Tyler a false sense of security?

Something trouble me about the name of the album "scaled and icy". It references Trash the dragon but Trench shows us that dema is cold, fake light (néon) without heat. banditos have torche and Real fire meaning true creativity. So "Icy" is not creativity, it's dema. Trash is with dema?

  • @clarafurness83
    @clarafurness83 3 года назад +1

If trash the dragon is a symbol of creativity and imagination, then I think the fact that josh turned him into toy form links with a lot of the commentary of the commercialisation of creativity in Blurryface and Trench (e.g. in lane boy: “singles on the radio are currency, my creativities only free when I’m playing shows and chlorine: “now you double as a paper maker”). Children’s toys in particular are very commercialised and materialistic in nature. If someone is turned into a toy, this is also the ultimate method of control. Tyler - in toy form - is now a profitable object whose only purpose is to entertain a certain age demographic. He has no emotional or physical capacities and is under total control of his owner. Basically, the industry and mainstream music consumers want something from the band and it’s hard to not give in to this pressure.
Idk how to wrap this up but yeah, I think the choker music video could double as a commentary on how being a popular, marketable band threatens the authenticity and creativity of their music.

Great take! The video is so good! Another take on Josh possibly being under the influence of the Bishops could be connected to the lyrics from Lovely from Regional At Best: "You say things with your mouth, Cobwebs and flies come out I hear a second voice behind your tongue somehow" where Josh possibly being controlled by the Bishops to control things rather than let the creativity (i.e. Trash) out from the glass. We'll have to see where it goes though!

I think the video is a dream Tyler is having. It's similar to Jumpsuit and Levitate but has weird features like him not being able to make sound when trying to get Josh's attention (a classic dream feature), Josh's drums magically appearing and disappearing, Josh being hostile and having powers, turning his dog and Tyler into statues, etc. Being captured with a net gun is absurd and silly. It's a dream that mirrors what he's been through.

I don't believe that anyone else has noticed this, but my sister brilliantly pointed out to me that in the Choker music video, the second toy in the glass (Jim) is facing the GoodDay Dema cup on the counter. Could it mean that he's heading to Dema? Also, this gets more complicated because, why aren't bobblehead Tyler and Trash facing Dema? Did they escape?

  • @davismonachino209
    @davismonachino209 3 года назад

People tend to forget (and for comprehensible reasons) that Jim isn't just a regular that Josh found, Jim is one of those certified dogs that associations give to people that struggle with anxiety and other mental struggles.
So basically fake Josh/Bishop in disguise is taking everything positive away: he turns Trash (creativity) into a toy, does the same with Jim (supportive system like friends/family and everything that Trench took as major themes) and then Tyler who could represent the music that us the clique need and use to go through our daily mental struggles.
Or maybe it's just a fancy and creepy way of representing Tyler being captured and made powerless again by the bishops.
    EDIT:
I've read the brilliant theory coming from Anne Klier and it makes SO much sense.
I think Tyler could still represent the music that many tøp fans use to go through their tormentors (wink) but he could also represent the whole "taking care of yourself as a start for becoming a better version of yourself" idea which is one of the major themes that Choker talks about, from the bridge to the ending rap section of the song.
If taking care of yourself is positive and represents the start for joining the banditos in the rebellion against DEMA then we will literally turn you into a static, tiny and powerless toy, so that you can't do anything about it and go back under our control, like a toy that we can indoctrinate at our pleasure.
That's what the bishops/Fake Josh/whatever could be implying with that last scene.

I don’t know if anyone else has said this, but I would say further proof of Trash representing creativity is in Levitate when Tyler sings “ever since the 7th grade I learned to fire breathe” which I always assumed meant rapping/singing but could also just reference him learning to use his creativity. Dragons breathe fire, so I think it’s an obvious reference!

I have this theory that Josh was working for Dema the whole time. Perhaps he never was a Bandito, he was just spying on Tyler? That might explain why he didn’t save him when Nico captured Tyler in Levitate. Also if you pay attention, at the end of Jumpsuit’s video Nico & Josh share a quick weird look that always stuck to me. It’s unlikely because it’s a huge plot twist, but it’s a theory.

i think choker and shy away are bridges from trench to the new album the same way heavydirtysoul was the crossover from blurryface to trench.
i think the book is indeed a sort of easter egg solely because of both Nicholas Bourbaki which is of course a nice reference to nico and morph especially since morph is all about the "if and when" and if of course being the title of the book. The fact that it's a "choose your own ending" book, i think that might symbolize the idea of choosing your own destiny?? even though the content of the book itself is not something they want to be associated with.
i think choker is kind of referencing the fact that tyler chokes up when he is asked to leave dema, even though he wants to, he chokes up everytime he actually has to leave, where "we'll win but not everyone will get out" and "in time i'll leave the city for now i will stay alive" come back to where now it's clear that "nobody's coming for me" maybe because they know he was born a choker and will never leave anyway???? and maybe at the end where "you get taller, bolder, stronger and the rearview only blinds you" ends on that positive note that maybe even though tyler's born a choker, there's hope he has the courage to escape dema anyway

Has anyone looked at the fact that the beanies have always represented something for TOP. Tyler is wearing an orange beanie. Trench was yellow and blurryface was red. Yellow + Red - Orange. Sooo, couldn't Tyler be saying he's mixed between the two? Couldn't Josh be Josh trying to save Tyler who is lost between freedom (trench) and mental despair (blurryface)? Why wouldn't Josh want his favorite and most trusted friend to be in the same place to protect each other and find their way out, thus why Trash, Jim Dun, and Tyler are in the case together ("in a different world") working together to get out.
Just been a though and something I haven''t seen brought up. Maybe that is to straight forward.

Could the book be a link to Morph? Y'know the line "If and when are truly different cries for it. If is purely panic and when is solemn sorrow. One invades today while the other spies tomorrow" And then the line "He'll always try to stop me, that Nicholas Bourbaki"
Edit: HOLD ON. "If" and "Invade" both come first. That could latch onto the theory that Dema is slipping into the real world.
"He'll always try to stop me, that Nicholas Bourbaki" "If" was written by Nicholas Bourbaki. Josh chased Tyler and stopped him from getting the Dragon. I might just be stupid but I feel like that backs up Josh being/working for a Bishop, possibly Nico.

My thoughts so far (could be wrong):
Orange beanie - Tyler is in a place between Dema and trench that hasn't been defined yet. (Yellow and red)
Trash has double meaning - creativity and the Twenty One Pilots brand. Trash is on the front of Josh's drum set where it usually says "Twenty One Pilots."
Tyler & Trash figurines - he feels like he is losing grasp on his brand as it becomes more profitable (I think he may be struggling with the label company).
Choker might be about depression, but also could be his lack of action against a label turning him and his brand into their profit margin. I feel like he is paralleling the mental and tangible struggles.
I think he feels like a sellout, which might explain the brown plaid - him trying to ground himself again.
He also tries to take Trash back, which implies that he doesn't feel like he has control over it anymore.
This is my interpretation thus far, but subject to change upon new information.

@ThePopSongProfessor, your opinion that Josh is being controlled by DEMA is absolutely correct. It explains the line "Nobody's coming for me". He thinks he's safe, home with Josh in Ohio...but doesn't that remind you of the No Chances line "We come for You"....? which we presume is from the POV of DEMA. It also explains the line "No volunteers to cosign on my fears" - he's realized Josh is not actually Josh, so he needs "change his circumstance" and he "needs to move right now" (I.e. get out of there ASAP). Then of course as you describe DEMA josh chases him and captures him.
Side note - I sometimes wonder if the "Only smoking second hand" phrase is referring to the fact that he's in a faux/secondhand type of setting....it's a slight stretch.

I know that a lot of people has confirmed that Tyler and Clancy are two different characters, because Clancy watches Tyler in Trench. But! Dema is a state of the mind, and when you dream you often watch yourself in situations. I am sorry, if I am waaaay off, havent read all of theories because I havent got the time, but are very interested and love reading all of your theories.
I just have this gut-feeling that Clancy represents something in Tyler, Just as Nico does. That Clancy "awakens" the year the band comes together, tells me it has something to do with Tylers state of mind. That Tyler can see Dema through Clancy´s eyes etc..
That indicates that they are tied together, and if clancy is us as listeners, why do he communicate to us and who are the rest of the Banditos? And I dont think Tyler would ever put words into his listeners mouths. Am I really THAT wrong? I think Clancy is Tylers past self, before and in Dema. Clancy is dead. Tyler has become a father and I know that makes you think about yourself in another way. Critical, but also in search of why you are who you are etc..
I hope that this album is Tyler trying to understand and get to the bottom of his struggles.
Maybe I am way off, and for that I am sorry y'all. But the most important thing about this is to make a storyline that means something to you personally.
I do have thoughts on Jim, Ned, Trash and Josh's parts as well, but lets just see the album/story unfold a little bit more.

I've been researching and going through old Trench material. This is what I found on the new symbol of trench:
After passing the statue and traversing through a tunnel, both of which appear in the “Nico And The Niners” video, the Compass E Pitchfork is discovered in an open area of land. It references “Nico” lyrics reading: “Symbolizing the overturning of the false compass of DEMA, the Bandito Underground recognize the flipped E as an insignia of truth being revealed. We utter the code ‘East Is Up’ as a message of unity, truth and rebellion against the oppressive forces of DEMA.”
I think Tyler and Josh chose this symbol--NOT DEMA! If you look at Jumpsuit, Levitate, and Nico and the Niners, the symbol appears at the end. The only videos where Tyler is recaptured by Blurryface...I think Josh and Tyler are trying to communicate with us: EAST IS UP.

I just realized that Shy Away's video is in a 4:3 aspect ratio, while Choker is in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The 4:3 aspect ratio was commonly used on older televisions, like those that appear in the propagandas of S.A.I.
This tells me that the Shy Away video is definitely a "televised broadcast" by the bishops. And it may have happened after the events of Choker, when Tyler and Trash have become toys.
Also I think the aspect ratio of Choker is slightly smaller than the aspect ratio of the Levitate, Nico & the Niners and Jumpsuit videos. This may mean that the world in which the events of the Choker video take place is a "reality within the real world or Dema reality." I don't know if this last point makes sense bc I haven't been able to corroborate the aspect ratios between Choker and Trench's videos.
In the case of Shy Away it is super evident.
But I can tell you guys this! Aspect ratios are relevant, I share with you a link to an interesting video that explains this in a better way and how an aspect ratio tells a different story through sensations: ruclips.net/video/BdPsyLtlamM/видео.html

Scaled and icy mixed up is clancy is dead and the SAI of scaled and icy is SAI and it’s the new logo of twenty one pilots. Also they both got taken to dema and dema is trying to make people think that dema is a good place which is why the album is very positive. But actually it’s dark because dema took them captive to make music.

The psi symbol is interesting. I didn't make the connection between it and "SAI". But also, I've always thought that the reason Blurryface is named Nicolas Bourbaki is because that group of mathematicians invented the empty set symbol (Ø), which ToP use frequently, and which connects conceptually to themes of Vessel and vialism (being a container with nothing inside). Psi can refer to psychology, which I'm sure is intentional, but I wonder if, given their previous references to math concepts, it's not also being used here to reference the other place it's commonly seen: quantum mechanics.
In quantum mechanics, psi represents the wave function, which is basically just a mathematical description of how likely something is to be in any particular state at any given time. If we're really going into an era of Dema vs "Real World", I wonder if the psi represents how likely a given situation is to be in either Dema or the real world, or by extended metaphor, how likely a thought or idea is to be realistic vs an irrational fear.
I'm probably reading WAY to much into this, but with ToP I can never rule anything out for sure, so I'm interested to see more from the SAI era and see what info we get about the psi.
