    I've been a tradesman as well as a hobbyist most of my life, and have used torches and heat guns to soften and shape PVC and other materials, but have never thought of this. Very creative!

    Cutting a 2x4 diagonally to make a taper and insert from both end would probably make it way easier, if you don't mind sacrificing a 2x4.

    You might round over the ends of the boards so they go in easier (2:45). That way the corners don't bind while being hammered in. Also, using 2 wedges pounded in from each end (like when setting a door frame) would put flat outward pressure on the tube (4:00). That way you wouldn't get the one over-stretched end you cut off (9:45). Just a suggestion...

      I was trying to enlarge a 2 1/2 inch round piece of PVC last night with a heat gun and got it to the point of bubbling with heat and it didn’t move as much as yours have. I’m impressed to see how far they actually can be manipulated. Thanks for the video!

    I've done similar to save money on PVC pipe couplings and to interface to downspouts. Amazing when you get to the larger size diameter pipes how expensive the PVC couplers can be and really... to interface the same diameter pipe, you just nee to have a heat gun and do like you're doing, though with a cleaned slightly rounded ended... if even that... same diameter pipe to make bell ends. Really saves some money when you're at the 4" or definitely 6" or larger diameter pipe coupling expense and you need a few.

    Cool idea! A few tips of mine and some from other comments:
    1. For square/rectangular boards as shown in the video, sand the boards smooth and round the corners at the ends.
    2. Make large triangular wedges and insert them from both ends.
    3. Safety: 9:55 Never use a sled with rear blade exposure. Add a solid or top-hinged guard first.
    4. Safety: 11:15 Never lift a cut item from a moving saw blade. Unless you like things flung at your face at high speeds.

    OK my 2 cents on squaring the tube. After heating insert 2 boards then insert and drive in 3rd board between 1st two. That eliminates board digging into wall of tube itself

  • @timfoster5043
    @timfoster5043 2 года назад +7

    Excellent! I've always wondered about something like this.
    I wonder if it would be easier to have the top board be 3 wedges: 2 coming in from the front and 1 coming in from the back. Tap the rear wedge in, thereby forcing the 2 front wedges to separate, with the 3 wedges combined forming the final rectangle for the top.
    I might have to try that.

    If you want the heated pvc to set faster once it is in the shape you want, keep a spray bottle of water nearby and spray the pvc with water. It will quickly set and harden the pvc.

  • @danzamini4513

    Good idea 👍 But to make it easier:
    1. Take a board that is 1-2 cm larger in width than the size you want.
    2. saw it so in length so that you get 2 triangles.
    One side of the triangle should be 90 degrees at an angle.
    On top of a triangle or both should be 1-2 cm thick to be able to hit (back) on top with a hammer.
    3. the length should be 5 - 10 cm longer.
    4. lay the top of the triangles against each other in PVC and press them in.
    5. good luck! 👍

    Fast way to evenly heat the pipe is to place in a cardboard box slightly larger that pipe with about 2 inches of clearance around to make a oven. Heat from gun is then spread evenly.

    This process can be simplified considerably.
    If you cut two boards to equal the size you want the tube, then tapering one end of each like a wedge, they can be pointed into the tube opposing each other and pushed together.
    You could even just take one block and cut it lengthwise, making two wedges for the same result. As they are pushed together, the tube will form to the shape of the wood.

    PVC is great stuff to work with. I will quite likely try this out. On a safety note make sure that you do this in a really well ventilated area. If you smell any plastic when heating or cutting it is seriously bad for you. PVC fumes are highly toxic and may cause long term effects.

    • @HandmadeCreativeChannel

      Toxic gases from plastic come out when you burn the plastic. In this case, we're just heating up. "do not overheat" Thanks for the comment 👌

    • @GarryHeard
      @GarryHeard 2 года назад +3

      @@HandmadeCreativeChannel that's not 100% true. Burning is very bad, but warming and cutting also emits gas and particles. A long time ago I had to drill 15784 3/4" holes in PVC by hand. We had to take a lot of ventilation, filtering, and tooling into consideration. It's not always easy, but it's well worth the effort. Same thing with 3D printing. Lots of nano particles are emitted. Some are very toxic, some not so much, but I don't think we've had enough time for long-term studies yet.

    • @HandmadeCreativeChannel
      @HandmadeCreativeChannel  2 года назад +3

      @@GarryHeard Again, toxic gases come out when the plastic is burned. When you feel a scent from heating does not mean you swallow toxic gas. New plastics are made to be recycled. In order to be successfully recycled, they are designed to withstand a higher temperature so that they can Easy to change shape without burning and emitting gases.
