This is a ridiculously well-made video for your audience size. Immensely underrated video for an immensely underrated franchise.

Hey thanks. Word of mouth is hard on the internet, I guess. There's a sequel video of the sequel game, which did better views-wise. Shame nobody cares about the original, though.

Oh hot damn another video! I played Mirror's edge right up to the drainage canal section a few years ago. Your describing the game as the end product being less than the sum of its parts sure is true. The cutscenes and the way the plot rolled out felt a bit odd although I never knew about its development, only having watched its debut and thinking of it as a tech demo that became a sort of cult classic. I haven't touched its sequel but I can't think of any other game that perfectly does what free running is supposed to be. There are certainly games and mods for such that attempt such elements in crude fashion but Mirror's edge whole bit of free running was executed perfectly. I did thoroughly enjoy the level design and rather industrial/service corridors and such that you have to yard yourself through to get to destinations. The Levels felt right but at the same time I sure wish the game as a whole delve more into the other parts of the world building that it didn't touch on.
Ultimately the game felt just a bit odd in that sense, like you're existing in a vacuum, up on roof tops and such. The people you interact are other runners, your sister and the security personnel trying to murk you made it feel a bit too sterile which I guess makes sense sometimes but felt just odd. It reminds me of the feeling source engine games have, especially when there's no NPCs around in a city environment. Despite that and all the stuff I can say against it as not being a full baked game, it does stand against the test of time because of its solid foundation core of its bit which is pretty nice. You can't say that about many games really sometimes. Sometimes a game has good parts in it but just gets dragged down by the rest, its development and bad parts and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
I can't believe you brought up time crisis of all things lol. I haven't heard or thought about that game since ever. I even bought time crisis 3 and a light gun for the PS2 but haven't touched it in years.

Easy subscribe man, deserve way more viewers :) It's undoubtedly true that the games true potential was stifled, but I still can't help but love this game and appreciate it as one of my personal favorites for all its successes and aspirations. Almost as much because of what it hints at as it actually presents, with your limited yet grounded perspective really creating a sense of presence in a world and story that was by all means underdeveloped yet almost incidentally lets you fill in the blanks and feel truly "there" due to its incredible atmosphere (as well as kinaesthetics). There's not many games where just stopping to smell the roses and take in the moment, even a moment where genuinely nothing is occurring, is as interesting and fulfilling as moving forward through the designers intended path and pace
Unanswered mystery I think has always been an underrated ingredient in games, and while it's not an excuse to have an unsatisfying story or presentation, when used right it can really allow for an almost ethereal magic where your brain gets instinctively hardwired to seek and create its own answers (answers often more interesting than the reality) and involve, immerse and ground you that much more. For me, that makes the world and story feel almost infinitely overwhelming and filled with life, just that bit more incidental, real and alive, we just don't get to see it all because we're in our own wonderfully grounded perspective surrounded by a complete and carefully crafted atmosphere. When done right, the world and story feels like it isn't a constructed map file and script conveniently designed all around you as the center, it feels like you're just a person living in that moment and story.
Not many games hit that feeling, some of the immediate examples at the top of my head being Ico, Halo CE, Dark Souls and TWDS1. Games where the atmosphere and your presence is so unfiltered without many of the standard expected conveniences of exposition, where the ambience and moment is allowed to speak and breathe for itself, that even the air itself feels palpable. Once again, the ultimate success of this being to make you feel there, like you're actually living that moment and actually care. Yes I'm going way too deep here BUT to me Mirrors Edge really hits that exact rare magical feeling and despite all its major flaws and cuts, I value it evermore for it.

Its funny how this game was polarizing on launch, but managed to get a passionate cult following years later.

@@GizouGitai I never played Mirror's Edge, but I'll say this. It was one of the last AAA games of the 2000s that was experimental. Not to say there aren't any experimental AAA games after the next decade. But few dared to achieve to originality and bold risk taking of games from the 2000s. The 2000s was the best decade for vidya, and M*llennials took it for granted.

@@NihilisticIdealist The qualifier of "one of the last" really got me there, I was trying to come up with all kinds of examples. November '09. Japanese games are inherently not "AAA" outside of Final Fantasies. Well worded.
But I'd defienitely say the '90s was a better decade for games.

@@GizouGitai The 90s was the best year for PC gaming. Because we received God-tier PC games like Half-Life, Thief, & System Shock 2. Some consoles games haven't withstood the test of time. And some beloved 2D series made a rough transition to 3D. Such as Contra, Castlevania, Earthworm Jim, and... Bubsy. :^)

@@NihilisticIdealist I've got a lot of homework when it comes to western PC games.
I do want to make a video about the industry's transition to 3D. Eventually. Low on the list. I think about that time a lot.
For now, don't look down on the PS1 and N64. There's real gold there, if you can adapt to non-standard control schemes.

From Ace Combat, to ZoE, to this, you really cover a breadth of... what I guess I'll call niche titles. Huge fan of everything you've covered as well as everything you've put out, so I've gotta ask, how do you decide what you wanna cover? Apologies if you've already answered this and I just missed it.

    • @GizouGitai
      @GizouGitai  3 года назад +2

I wake up after a night of heavy drinking and find notes like "Instead of metal gear, maybe ZOE? It's [illegible jibberish] faster/better timed."
I like novelty in games a lot, so I don't want an audience that expects only one type of game, so I express that interest in novelty. But so far there's generally been a running theme... at least in my mind.
I originally had a plan for the whole channel to lead up to one particular game and then end. But that plan was put on hold as this thing started looking successful. Like any good manga.
