34:05 "And what you can see here as well, is that we never exaggerate the body proportions, especially not the female. And that's something you tend to see in a lot of other games and designs, the objectifying and sexualizing the female body. And for me that's not elegant. We don't do that here." 100% agree. We need more people like this!
In Mirrors Edge it was about unraveling a mystery behind why your sister was framed for murder, In Catalyst it was *SAVE THE WORLD FROM THE EVIL BADGUYS!* Subtlety wasn't DICE's strong-suit when it came to the reboot.
A truly inspiring talk! I wish more games were designed with a unique, coherent visual style in mind. Too many just end up replicating the genre conventions over and over again until we cannot tell which one we're playing anymore because they all look the same.
love the new style, but i prefer the original. the city was much more gritty and human, but at the same time ethereal. they used much more simple and grounded architecture. and the lighting: bright colors sparsely glittered throughout huge unending swaths of white buildings and skylights. i think they tried to recreate that feeling in catalyst but they tried too hard and ended up with something much different. not bad. just different.
I much prefer catalyst to the original. The art designer clearly knows what he wants to portraits in the new game and that's good, although many people don't like that direction.
I think you did a great job at making the environments look futuristic yet believable, it was not sci-fi it's just a little farther in the future with a lot of money, very well done, loved every second of it ! Also there does seem to have been big level design restructurations between phase 3 & 4, at least from the images, some buildings are not played the same way with the same paths at all
I freaking love the style they were going for. But I just noticed half way through the game they kind of got lost. The shard and the rezoning district both looked like last minute ideas, they just didn't fit in the story nor the environment. Otherwise I really wish the city was more expanded than just 6 small districts, at least reach out to the streets. Mirror's Edge fans always wanted to access streets if anything. One thing I must add though, if somehow a Mirror's Edge developer working on a sequel is reading this PLEASE don't use texts and recordings to tell us stories about your world. I love the story behind the city of Glass so much but it would be times better to adapt in actual gameplay and cutscenes. All the stories of the city were more interesting than the actual story we got. Hell we even got Celeste in one of the recordings so I felt really disappointed finishing the game without seeing her even once.
Some of the finished buildings in Rezoning look pretty much the part with the rest of the city, it's just that the prominent areas are either buildings under construction or abandoned areas. I think they portrayed the Shard as a "higher place" compared to the rest of the city which is why it felt kinda jarring.
I love this game so much. Just wish there was more to play, more story and more areas to explore. I wish we could go inside the mall or have a mode without any ksect. Especially have a mode to explore ground floor.
Did you find the presentation? If not, can you please link the powerpoint slides? I'm really interested to hear their thoughts on first person movement
The question is: does Dice still have capable game developers, writers and artists that know what made the first one great? Because they didn't show it..
If you don't know what a Gamecube is, wtf are you doing at GDC. Gosh the number of mediocre imposters in this industry... Great conference from Jhony though, Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite series, the Catalyst was one of the most incredible immersive VG experience I ever had. It's a shame the spaces weren't that interactive or populated, and the gameplay was too limited ans simple, sometimes frustrating. But the design is a masterpiece.
you can really feel the dissonance of the fresh idea of an fps platformer with ahead of its time visuals on the one hand and the stale aged game mechanics they used to implement it. worst skill tree i have ever seen in a game. the "combat" is so flat that you only need one button, what made the decision to remove guns because they were a 1-klick solution totally pointless. to me spamming the "punch" button feels a lot less satisfying than for example the shotgun and the MG in the first game (the sound of the MG is probably my fav gun sound ever). collectibles that require you to stop running in a game thats about running... like wtf. the core of the game is sooo goood and yet they did so little with it. the finished game felt a little like an extremely polished prototype.
Amazing to see the process and attention to detail that went into this game. Just a shame they ruined it by making it a pseudo open world environment and failing to develop the emotional engagement the first game had.
I loved the work he did on MEC, it was like a graphic designer heaven
instablaster...
i always love the art direction from Mirror's Edge

I seriously love the fashion style and aesthetic of mirror's edge catalyst. You guys really outdid yourselves
you did great job on the style and aesthetics. Wish the writers and actors did the same tho the story was lacking
or a better Level Design...
sorry i couldn't resist

Also the sister twist was so obvious it was unbelievable that Faith did not suspect it even after hearing an audiotape about it.
Nah I liked the story. Actors did a good job imo. They were very human
@@monmonstartv5159 Both games had a wack story

I loved Mirror's Edge Catalyst, thank you for this amazingly designed gem
Can't believe the game is from 12 years ago but it still rivals today's games in beauty.
They're actually talking about the 2016 prequel, but the point still stands!
@@Zipstone it's not a prequel

Haha he said people might have forgotten about GameCube.
Me : *Thinking about GameCube intro meme!*
haha I've never played on a gamecube but the sound popped into my head as well!
We need a third Mirror's Edge.
we need a number 3 you guys can do it!!
Mirrors edge still looks for better than any games till this day
Great talk!
Anybody knows where I can find their presentation on first person movement. I found their ppt but it's hard to understand

This game had so much potential only for it to be wasted. I hope they make another one
No Please that’s what a lot of people said about the first one lol
I'm playing the mirror edge catalyst

If he gets tired of art directing, he can sing in a reggae band.
I prefer the style of the first game, everything felt so clinical and futuristic in Catalyst
Don't get me wrong I did enjoy Catalyst but it simply doesn't compare to the first
please make mirrors edge 3
I want that hodie

Fallout 3 is better than New Vegas.
No, no it's not. Every aspect of Fallout 3 is improved upon in New Vegas.
