Edwin Newman was such a class act. Loved him in this.

One of my favorite skits then. I used to mimic Joe’s laugh. Love seeing this after so many years.

1984 was the year SNL had various guest hosts
take over for the now-fired Brad Hall at the "Saturday
Night News" desk, such as Edwin Newman, who retired
from NBC News, and was "guest anchor person" 3 times,
and made fun of himself, by failing to keep up with
the "fake news", as Norm MacDonald would later say!
This lasted into next season, until December 1st, and
cast member, Christopher Guest, became PERMANENT
anchor person, until the season finale, which aired in
April of 1985, right around the time Lorne Michales
returned to the fold as executive producer of the show!

I remember watching this back then when I was a kid, not realizing what a news legend Edwin Newman was.

CBS had Cronkite. NBC had a Dream Team with Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, John Chancellor and Edwin Newman.

Brad Hall is Julia Louis Dreyfuss’ husband

And knew he was 100% better behind the camera as a writer, director and producer. A rock star in that lane, for sure.

He looks like a 1980s Donald Trump here.

That’s cuz they’re imagining this is the bar at Sardi’s on 44th St., which is full of Hirschfeld caricatures.

This was actually my favorite episode of the mostly forgettable Dick Ebersol era.

Ron Howard also, as a bit on the Danny Kay Show in 1966, hosted his own show. "The Ronny Howard Show" w/ lil brother Clint. ruclips.net/video/6KVxDT3EfFQ/видео.html

Sigh..."thinking comedy." SNL would be hard pressed to be this clever. And this comes from that period when SNL was either brilliant....or....not. And seriously, "not." But this was an incredibly good episode.

Damn...these sketches used to be so good and funny. ...current day snl just steals bits from original content creators here on youtube...it's probably the main reason they maintain this channel here.
