      This all happened because...no Lorne. He was gone for a number of years, and replacement producer Dick Ebersol wasn't afraid to let stuff like this happen on his show.

I’ve never understood why he loathes the players “breaking” so much when those moments (e.g., Horatio wiping his tears with a pancake) are some of the best and most memorable. Someone’s gotta do a Lorne doc someday.

    Rickles plays along really well in this sketch, especially at 4:07 when he remains poker-faced and lets Joe Piscopo do the slapping. Rickles actually did have dramatic training--he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and his classmates included Piper Laurie and George C. Scott.

      I remember it live too. I've been trying to find this one (and the other sketch where he's a monk) on RUclips forever. Oddly, Rickles' name is not even in this clip's description, so that's why it's been hard to locate.

    OMG, I love Don Rickles! He was so quick with his wit and really played to the audience. Just perfect when he ad libbed and you didn't know what to expect. He might have been from a different generation, but oh man, the brilliance!!!! RIP, sir!!!

    How is it that this sketch is not in the million views like the Kristen Wiig's or Fed Armisen's? Joe Piscopo and Dom Rickles put out comedy gold. "Blind Cop" Belushi is lucky to be in for the ride

      Lorne wasn't in charge at this point; Dick Ebersol was. Given Lorne's hatred of adlibbing, I doubt he would have appreciated Don going off script and turning it into an offshoot of his standup routine.

      @Sage & Onion You also have to remember how much Lorne hates adlibbing. In today's SNL, you play to script. He also doesn't like breaking up, which all three of the performers here did (although Piscopo was the worst).

    I remember there's also another sketch on this episode with Rickles and Piscopo called "This is your Afterlife" and they picked up from where they left off breaking character and slapping each other again. 😅😅😅

      @@Kev621 but yeah, these sketches are sooo good, such great improv comedy! you could teach improv with this episode alone, id wager! good writing, even better comedians! im not a hater like most are online, SNL is still good, but its more so just 'amusing' to me. theres some rare gems here and there. i truly think keenan is carrying the current cast. he breathes and bleeds improv, been doin it since the all that days! hes an OG too! anyway, my point is. every new SNL recruit should have to take an improv class. 'but i know what im doing, thats why i thought you hired me..' is what they would say. 'shut up. you know nothin, young one. now watch.' and they all should teach that class i spoke of earlier using this entire episode. and finish 'THIS is how you make sketches! no more than 2 political sketches, and 3 political jokes outside of those sketches. EMBODY the OG writers!' and teach the same class to every host, saying the same thing. but ending with 'EMBODY don!' and there ya go. thats how ya fix SNL haha. sorry for the side rant. im bored.

I watched the Dean Martin Roast episodes, but Don and Foster Brooks were the best. And if you don't who Foster Brooks is...you're laugh your ass off.     One of the few times when Piscopo was truly funny. He really held is own against the onslaught that is Don Rickles. Belushi's character might as well not even have been there. Rickles and Piscopo owned this. Brilliant improv.

    Joe Piscopo worked well with the incomparable ad libbing of Rickles. Belushi could've been replaced by an office plant and the skit wouldn't have lost anything.

    When this aired It was still relatively easy to get an apartment in Manhattan. I moved into a big one bedroom off of Dyckman St in '93. Now it's impossible to find anything in that same neighborhood for less than 1,500.00 a month.

    The good old days of SNL. Some of the things they do today is good but nothing compares to the older years. Don Rickles was one of the best comedians. Him and Robin Williams are two of my absolute favorites!
