I actually just realized how smart Jimmy is here. He set up two different red herrings for Chuck: his ex-wife being there, and the phone without the battery. And Chuck takes the bait on both of them. He's intentionally making himself look like a bad lawyer relying on simple gambits and it works. He knows that Chuck thinks that he'll go for plays like that because Chuck thinks Jimmy's a bad lawyer and he took advantage of that. Obviously the phone was a ploy, but the ex-wife was subtle enough to make it look like he was on his last legs. Very smart.

@@zacharyclark4092 A red herring is a diversion or distraction that misleads from the relevant or important question. 1) Kidnapped his friend and threatened her of murder to force Phoenix to accept the case.
      2) Lied to Phoenix about the case. The client isn't supposed to lie to his attorney.
Phoenix never agreed to be the guy's lawyer, he was threatened into it. He had no moral or legal obligation to defend him to the best of his abilities.
Matt had the right to a defense, he should have just contacted a lawyer and hired them to defend him.

      or
      2. Admit that his illness to electricity is all in his head and that he's crazy.

    • @shanez1215
      @shanez1215 6 лет назад +942

Saul wasn't quite as talented in traditional ways, legal knowledge and terminology as traditional lawyers like Chuck, and Chuck was in a league of his own in case knowledge and intelligence. Odenkirk's acting in this scene showed that. However, he was very skilled at manipulating and persuading people and was quite crafty in his techniques.
Whenever a traditional lawyer goes against him, they can't really combat him as effectively because they're playing the wrong game and arguing like they would to a traditional lawyer. It's like when a highly skilled player of a video game that understands the metagame goes against a less skilled one. They may have a tougher time since they are used to playing against someone else who understands the meta, so the newcomer is a wildcard of sorts.
Not to mention Chuck's extreme arrogance and feeling of superiority, which was ultimately his downfall, just like Walt.

@@shanez1215 I get what you are saying with Chuck and Walt having similarities. But, I'm sick of people acting like what Walt turned into with Heisenberg was who he was. Walt turned into Heisenberg in a two year period upon a Cancer diagnosis in order to take revenge on the world because he did not come close to his potential in his life.
On the other hand, Chuck fulfilled his potential to the highest degree and he STILL acted this way. This is who Chuck was, a Narcissist. Walt, however became addicted to the power of Heisenberg and took it way too far.
Walt's behavior was more acute and Chuck's behavior was chronic. That's why it was called "Breaking" Bad. Walt was a person who was taken advantage of or let himself get taken advantage of. Then he reached his breaking point, lashed out, and took it too far. Chuck was always resentful of Jimmy and did the right things for the wrong reasons, and then he was exposed by the end of his life for what he was.
So, yes, they both displayed inflated self-interest and self-importance, but they had completely different paths and were completely different people.

Crazed Joe, I see your point about the six months on the run. But I believe there is more there than meets the eye.
When he came back to town to kill Jack’s crew he told Skyler he did it all for himself, not the family. He didn’t tell Skyler that he left his money to Gretchen and Elliot to give to Walter Jr. on his 18th birthday. He didn’t care about getting the credit anymore, as long as what he did wasn’t for nothing. He also didn’t hesitate to kill Jack when he offered to tell him where his money was after the machine gun had stopped running and Jack was negotiating for his life.
To me, there was more character growth there and his journey was fully completed once he died in the Finale. If you remember he was still full of desperate bravado in Granite State, and six months later he was resigned to turning himself in initially. Then he decided to make a last stand in the Finale. So, I still believe that his Heisenberg transformation was over a two year period.

In many ways Chuck is correct in his observations of Jimmy, but for all Jimmy's faults he likes people and his clever mind, unlike Chuck's, doesn't move in straight lines. His 'deviousness' is the ability to problem solve creatively. He's also much more grounded than Chuck with a great sense of humour. Chuck is visibly uncomfortable in the dinner party scene when Jimmy charms Chuck's wife with all his lawyer gags. Another deep wound for Chuck. First, their parents, then his wife.

If Chuck managed to resist in that moment he would've been golden.
Jimmy just committed a crime here: incitement to battery (clever wordplay). He proved that he's indeed a crooked lawyer who's not above using dirty tactics. Even if he successfully proved Chuck's illness being psychological, he had to take responsibility for all the damage Chuck might've suffered from it (you can't just put a fake spider on the back of an arachnophobic person either).
That in combination with his other tactics used here (inviting Chuck's wife and talking about their relation to put pressure on him for instance) would've guaranteed his downfall. And Chuck's lawyer wad about to put the nail on his coffin by clarifying that Chuck's illness was not at issue here. Jimmy's point is that he destroyed the tape because he was mad at his brother who hates him, not because it was incriminating for him. And to prove it he had to expose Chuck's feelings for him in front of everyone. A foolproof plan that only Chuck himself could've possibly foiled, but alas his giant ego and hatred towards Jimmy was his downfall.

As much as you root for Jimmy, Chuck IS right about him on everything. Chuck's flaw is that it's not simply principle motivating his crusade against Jimmy, but also jealous resentment: being brilliant in the law was the one thing he had over Jimmy, something he'd earned through all the proper channels, then Jimmy comes along online course and all and he's undeniably brilliant at it. Better even. Even if it is the more "cheating" way of doing it. Both their approaches are technically legal, but opposite in principle. While Chuck must stick to the moral way of doing law, Jimmy on principle refuses to abide by the system seeing it as something you're either played by or something you game. His dad played fair and got taken advantage of all the time.
