Even though I could never afford a set of these wheels, I admire them and HRE for making them. Kudos friends.
Just bought a car that came with a set of HRE wheels. Never in my life would I ever have been able to afford them. Their so beautiful that some days I just sit in the garage and stare at them.
And you bought it from the previous owner's ex wife, right? 🤣 Cuz she wouldn't have a clue, or care, what HE paid for 'em.
you can see and hear the quality these wheels are state of the art Great Vid Jay!
We've had HRE in Canada for at least 10 years...which was the time of my first encounter with them - yes they are relatively expensive but are lightweight, are and look well-made and, gorgeous! I didn't realize that they are a small shop...there's certainly nothing about their product to indicate small. Really nice stuff.
It's so great to see a company that is so passionate about their product. For all of the thinking and engineering that goes into each one I think the price is justified.
Love HRE Wheels. Best aftermarket wheels ever. I have HRE 840r in bushed aluminum finish on my E46 M3. Love those wheels
Satin finish looks the best! amazing what a set of nice wheels can do for a car!
Great video!! Much respect for this guy
As always, thank Jay Leno! Channel is awesome and informative!
Very cool. Love Jay Leno's garage.
Just got my first set and these are £13k 21” r101 light weight , never thought I would own a pair in my life best wheels I’ve ever owned 😊
Some of the Best looking and high-quality wheels on the market By far And once again to the window team awesome awesome show
Great seeing these beautiful ( and efficient ! ) wheels made in the good ol' US of A !
For the people that are tripping out over the price. Forged wheels is very high quality and engineering involved, which is why they're so expensive compared to the $400 cast wheels you buy at Pep Boys. Obviously no one is going to put $20K wheels on a Honda Accord. Clearly, this brand is targeted towards luxury and high performance vehicles.
I am all for forged but $2.5k for one wheel seems excessive when you can get a forged wheel from, say Volk, for $3000 for all four.
pr0jectSkyneT Rays manufactures Volk Racing Wheels.
A Rays VR TE37 Ultra Track Edition is $1300 US which is the same price as HRE’s Series RC1 motorsport wheels.
You don’t custom order Rays to fit your specific vehicle. You choose from what they make available, are very limited to sizes, and only fit certain vehicles. Three finishes at most and they only produce 1 piece wheels.
Great product. We use HRE on all the Corvette show cars. Not a wheel for everyday drive use especially in Detroit with all the pot holes. Great in Florida's smooth roads and freeways. Great job Pres.
Wow, those are some killer wheels! Very cool stuff
Jay Leno is the type of guy that you can sit down and talk to about cars all day
Very informative video. Nice wheels!
You like H1 I worked for AmGeneral for 7 years awesome piece of machinery very proud to have worked there. Wish they would bring them back to the public.
Jay's face at 4:59 lol. he's like wow gtfo 20k for 4 wheels
50K to have your custom design made? ludicrous!
Pocket change for him.
Very nice wheels and always nice to know they have been tested to the car's maximum ability if anyone ever decides to take their car to the Autobahn for some 'FUN'
What a great company, I really learned a lot from this video. It's true about that carbon fibre wheel being light, I when to pick one up once and almost through it over my head accidently.
Top notch explanations an product . TY Jay.
Had HRE wheels on my 944 long time ago, expensive but they look so good on the car.
I dont have the car anymore. I do miss it.
Yes he can .hes worked for it and had some luck but .put it to great use good on him
Why does Jay suddenly scream at 2:53 hahaha
THAT IS A BIG TIRE
i'm dying
I've always loved these wheels. When I worked for a big named tire shop as a kid we use to get these in on a pretty regular basis. But good lord I really had no idea how much they actually spent on these wheels. So much for me getting some for my Saab 9-5 lol.
I toured the shop at a combo BMW/Porsche tech seminar. Very impressive to see a factory full of lathes & milling machines. Pricy but I might try the cast set for 3k on my Z06. What I came away with primarily is the TUV certification. With so many heavy & poorly designed wheels being sold in the USA, it surprises me that NHTSA hasn't stepped into this area, not that I'm a big fan of government regs.
High quality lower springs and decent aftermarket wheels can make almost every car looks good !
that feel when your wheels costs 20 times more than your car..
Benu kas Lol. I know, right?
nice work!!!!
Just got a set of their 3 piece wheels for my vette, nice wheels!!! I also have a set of CCW 3 piece wheels on my other vehicle, and before owned SSR and work wheels... all 3 piece... are they over priced... yes
But I like wheels that are safe and look good plus perform.
Come on Jay that Bimmer is sick !
awesome vid
hello, what wheel rim are the 4th from left to right, and 6th from left to right?
Ha, I still have the old original wheels on my 65 Futura convertible, however she has 2 different sets of Ford spinner hubcaps. I use wire to secure the hubcap to the wheel, so they won't fly off when going fast on curves. I used to have old style mags, however they were too hard on the wheel bearings back in the olden days.
can anyone tell me what type of rear spoiler that is? I would like to put one on my BMW E92.
I would enjoy seeing Jay interview Forgeline, also a small company, and also made in America. I prefer their wheels, they are at least equally high end, but for a better price than HRE. Forgeline built an absolutely beautiful set of custom wheels, better than I even hoped, for less than $11,000, a far far distance from $50,000. They are in Ohio, not California, where costs are far less.
Forgeline's High Tech Machined (HTM) finish is truly tremendous.
this wheels are beautiful. Real nice company
I like when he shows and explains how it goes from raw stock (Flinstone Wheel) to finished product (powdered coated). The true strength comes from forging the raw stock, instead of pouring hot liquid into molds.
Love hre wheels and that m series looks awesone, but what nitto tires are one it
Liberty Walk Beemer at Jay Leno's garage, cool.
Having forged wheels is awesome, it does feel better driving my car with them on vs. cast.
Oh, and I'm not paying $3000 for cast wheels, anyone who does is a fool.
GalvatronTypeR matt farah did.
+GalvatronTypeR thats not cast its flow formed, It's lighter and stronger than cast but not to the standards of forged. People use those types of wheels on GT2's so I think your little honda should suffice.
FF01's shown are Cast Flow Formed, which is different than a regular cast aluminum. BUT... They aren't made in the USA as the video above states... HRE's own website says they're made in Japan.
Flow formed wheels are good if you want to step away from cheap cast.
It’s a flow form cast which now cost 2200-2500 same as bbs flowform wheels. Stronger lighter barrel of the wheel, which is the most important part.
That M3 is sick!
Thank you
Finally he put a high quality video
prices SUCK BIG TIME.....wheels for the 1%
IKR! Did you catch that cough from Jay when he said the price?? Lol
HRE has been around since 1978 and hayashi racing the 60's. The HRE 501/504/Techno R came out around or before the same time as the BBS wheel. The wheel you saw is a vintage series forged remake of the 501 style with technology/materials from today.
i already expected the rims to be expensive, but i actually think these are worth it after seeing how they design, and quality.
I had HRE Wheels for my Porsche & BMW M5 before, their wheels really make a big different in style and performance. Don't get me wrong, the price is a little outrageous...but, you can't go wrong with HRE :)
+DeeJay 7XTC True, but anything forged these days are just about a grand minimum, then you many options which can put each corner from 1K to 5K, and that's not even tires included. I think there is a HUGE difference in the mod market. Those that can afford Forged wheels and those that can not.
Apparently they got connections and excellent relations with the TUV if they are able to market their product there. Plus sending inspectors out for annual compliance audits are not cheap either.
were can i get those same nittos tires ?
You KNOW a company is doing good when they get the Contract to make all of the stock OEM wheels for the Saleen S7 & then again for the S7 TT. :)
Now these are probably standard on toyota to dodge! Amazing what comes on a stock car now a days it’s like we went through the catalog and picked out the beat parts to put on. And aftermarket now is sometimes not as good as some factory equipment not all but some.
"I've eaten pizzas that weigh more than this."
LOL
My neighbor's 911 turbo has the wheels at 6:36, they look absolutely amazing.
Seems like a cool young guy who's made a name for himself, good for him!
Its amazing that they sell theyr wheels here in Germany.
The TÜV makes modifying your car quite difficult and expensive most of the time because of strict rules on EVERYTHING.
thx man
omg! videos are in HD now.
I love my HRE wheels. You get what you pay for!
Always dreamnt of having a set of HRE's.
I love the BMW, but...Rays Engineering/Volk Racing Wheels...those are my favs. A nice set of TE37s please!
HEY Jay have you heard about those replica cars? Whats your opinion about those cars?
Great wheels
Why is everyone complaining about the price? Built to order wheels designed to fit the exact measurements of the vehicle and designed to perform under the most extreme road and race conditions cost money. I went to their 2014 open house where he gave a tour of the factory and showed many of his clients cars. Some of these wheels end up on the track on cars like the Porsche GT3 in real races. These are not your average brand name wheels. You pay for performance first and the looks are an added benefit.
vossen are good too.. i love their wheels :) and i heard only good things about them
Can someone comment on how they made that white text on the nitto tires?
I bought hre wheels for my 914 project....10" rears and 8" fronts. They were the 505 model,3 piece with black centers.About $1200 for the lot then(1994).What's with these prices?
It would be great to see Brad Beardow with Fifteen52 on the show with Jay. He's a great guy from Sarasota where I live.
Vossen rs5 forged magnesium wheels sell for about 8500 USD for a set. weight is about 15 pounds.
DOPE!!!!!!
Wonder how much the gold one at 6:42 costs...may get it for my M3.
HRE is a small company?
is that a Red Honda VF500 in the background on the right?
HRE’s are beautiful I’d get them for any car
HRE does make great wheels. They are typically used in Euro applications but I have seen them on a wide variety of cars. Heck, even tirerack.com carries them now and they can be had for as little as $800/wheel, depending on the size.
Many "gold nibbed" Montblancs, but a handcrafted gold nib is standard on a good fountain. Many reasons for it, but a good fountain will actually get better the more YOU use it- you don't want to let others use it regularly, because the nib will over time wear to your writing style/angle and someone else's AOA can cause problems. Check out Montblanc Writer Series. That's my bag. I own most of those.
Why the Swiss flag on the logo 🇨🇭on the coat of arms/ shield ?
That's is some bad ass BMW M3
I have HRE on my Ferrari, thinking about going with them for track wheels on my 911 TTS. Very nice people
Some of you guys....If you can't see the benefit of quality wheels, I don't know what to say to you. Racing teams don't use wheels from HRE, Forgeline and such just because they want to spend extra money. Quality is quality. If you think you're not getting what you pay for, why don't you start your own wheel manufacturing company...since you seem to think these are overpriced?
Umm, V8 Supercars use cast wheels from British manufacturer Team Dynamics as a control part (they used either forged A-Tek aluminum wheels, or cast Speedline magnesium or OZ magnesium wheels before that), while NASCAR uses steel wheels... For the prices HRE are charging they should at least be forged *magnesium* wheels really (like exotic supercars like Ferrari and McLaren come with), but anyhow.
IF money is no object, and WINNING is the only consideration, they MIGHT be worth it, assuming the driver can exploit the difference. Most drivers aren't good enough to justify the huge cost increase, even if they do it anyway.
I don't care for getto rims but I do love American made products
its a special tire paint you can buy in marker or brush on forms.
Jay HRE is not a Small company.....
lol. i thought the same, SMALL COMPANY? suuuure.
William Seroyer It's not exactly O.Z either.
As far as boutique wheels go, it's a large company. As general wheel manufacture and by comparison to what is generally defined as a large company - it is in a word, "tiny".
Well ya its also no BBS, but the way Jay is talking them, he is acting like nobody knows who they are. I just think he has no idea who they are, (old man problems)
William Seroyer That's what I thought when he said small, like wtf it's HRE!!, lol... actually it is small from employee count standard, I think he said they employe in the 40's count, by company size standards it is considered a small company. I agree this is a large company by reputation, brand, and where it stands in the market as a global leader in performance wheels, but company size he would be right by small.
Ok the 7 double spokes, do you see 7 Y's or 7 U's?
Enkei is a Japanese company and the wheels are made in Japan. I've made deliveries to one of their factories.
Even Jay batted an eye at 20k, and I think he can afford it. These wheels are great for maybe 1% of car owners.
Lmao at 4:01 Jay coughs when he heard the price
That is what a good engineer sounds like.
That Prius is now exclusive. :)
1:40 TUV (U with the two german dots on top) is the technical inspection organisation of germany
Nice to see Jay helping support the little guys... cough!
HRE are the sickest!!
I understand quality, but I also understand diminishing returns. There are probably minor aesthetic differences between a wheel like the PRF1 and the FF01, but with the HRE wheel you're only getting, say, a 5-10% improvement for 90% more money. And in the end it's still a heavier cast wheel. There's a reason many race teams use the RPF1.
sick rims on the bmw
Lots of exotics as well as modern muscle cars owner get these installed on their cars. But I personally preferred Rays Engineering wheels as well as Various other manufacturer such as Enkei (many different lines but their top notch stuff is worth noticing). Work Wheels, SSR.. just to name a few.
Jay i am reading Motor Trend magazine and the Bugatti tires and rim might cost you $100,000 for a new set after you drive 10,000 miles because heat eats it up so you think about that? or sooner if you don't get the right ones.
How great that a US manufacturer is striving to pass European safety tests. It's also great that the designs are really tasteful, and that BMW...
i love hre's but hate the price tag lol. oh.....and jay....run a comb thru that head man my god :p
Excellent points, and far too many people loose the concept of diminishing returns. I will admit that I can be guilty of it myself. From $2,000 pens to Rolex watches and optics on my firearms that I could never shoot as good as they are capable. Hell, I just bought a KAC Triple Tap this week, so maybe I should just shut up... ;)
