- Helpful timing marks for a 2006 & 2007 outlaw 500. This may work for the predator 500 aswell just look for a vertical line next to a T. The line next to the T is what you would line you case up to. I said may only have a line but it was due to lighting, with see the video I was able to see that there was a T.
SUMMARY
-5th line on flywheel (mag) is TDC which is the last of the 2 lines
-16 cam chain link pins between the two 12 O'clock timing dots on each cam
-2 Gold plates on timing chain at each 12 O'clock cam timing mark
Extra tags: polaris predator outlaw 500 500cc four stroke 4 valve timing marks shim rebuild top end irs
Bout to get a predator 500 with bad head gasket. This helps a lot to give me an idea for the timing. Probably gonna redo the whole top end. All the info I need, short and sweet! Thanks!
Glad to help. If you're doing the work I'd suggest atleast doing the piston rings and properly gap them

Yeah no problem, I own a 2007 Polaris outlaw 500 IRS Myself. and I’m in the process of Timing it Correctly. Do you know How much you need to Torque the 4 bolts on the head when you’re done. i’m trying to figure out how much they need to be Torqued ?
I haven’t took the head off yet. And I want to replace the timing chain and tensioner. I was wondering if the timing chain is easy to take out ?
This engine is a Subaru-Fuji engine, that is made in Japan.

Just an fyi if you pause the video and zoom in the second line that you timed the crank to is actually a capital T I hope that your quad is running and that the slight difference probably would not have skipped a tooth

Good video. FYI: My 2005 Predator 500 looks the exact same BUT I do not see the gold timing chain link. Mine is all original as of this time.
Correction: I just did not see my gold links! LOL! I tore mine apart, set it by your directions, and fired right up! Thank you!
I am having a problem getting my cams and chain back on, it seems the front chain guide closest to the exhaust valve side is up to high not allowing enough slack in the chain, do you have any pictures of where it is supposed to sit down inside the front of the engine, I don't have a book on this 04 Predator 500. When I pulled the head to replace the valves and seals the exhaust side guide pulled out with it, and I can't figure out how it is supposed to sit down in there, it seems like it will sit a couple different ways, neither way seems to work, it acts like it is in the way of the cam gear, any advice would be appreciated
I have a 2003 predator 500 and I did everything in this video the exact same and I had the brass links at the 12 o’clock dot on the camshaft but every time we rotate it seems that the brass bushing jumps one spot on the chain ahead of the dot is this normal or should I be seriously worried
Your timing chain rensioner should put pressure against that chain before you rotate it. Spin the mag to TDC, install cams and recheck TDC and and timing Mark's. IF YOU NEED TO SPIN THE MOTOR OVER WHEN THE CAMS ARENT CLAMPED REMOVE THE CAMS THEN ROTATE THE MAG. THEN REINSTALL AND RECHECK TIMING MARKS.
Brandon Conway OK I followed the steps in the video and did the timing chain tensioner but every time we rotate the motor one full turn until the brass links come back up onto the cams they are ones place a head like they skipped a tooth on the camshafts

My predator seems to keep skipping timing. I ordered a new tensioner and chain but what else could be bad?
Are your chain guides bad? Stretched chain or tensioner can cause this too. May want to leak down test it to make sure the valves aren't bent if it skipped timing while running
Check the ruffkey, they tend to break on this and will screw your timing
Do you know if hot cams timing chains have brass marks? I could only find 1 mark on the chain. And i realized i put the mf on backwards.. Still could only find one mark. Setting the timing today after full rebuild. Wish me luck..
Hey Brandon. I have set everything as seen in your video except when I put tension on the chain with my finger it rotates the cams off the 9 and 12 marks. You have any idea how I can get the cams to have a final resting place of 12 and 9 when tension is applied
When you put everything together you want to put your finger in the cam chain port and pushing on the rail to mimic the timing chain tensioner. Put the cams in place on the notches on the came stamps when doing so. This will put all the slack on the chain on the intake side. (Toward the tensioner side) so the timing will be on the spot when the timing chain tensioner is in place.

Hey Conway. I just replaced the timing chain on my 05 predator. I got it started but it dies when giving it gas. The chain I got doesn't have the gold links, any advice? TDC is lined up with the t and cams are in right locations. Thanks
Did you double check the marks once the cam chain is in? I always put my finger in the cct hole to mock the tension on the chain before putting together. Any slack in the chain should be toward the back of the quad for the tensioner to to push on.
@@ApexPowerSportsllc yeah, I checked twice because I didn't want to have to take it off again.
@@robertstephenson7156 double check again. Look for the T and go to the line next to it and check the cam position at 10 and 2 for the cam lobes and the dots on the cam sprocket should be level with the cylinder head
@@ApexPowerSportsllc are there more than 1 TDC on the predator? I checked again and the dots are correct.
@@robertstephenson7156 no just the line next to the T. If cam lobes are backwards go one full turn of the crank and should go back to 10 & 2. Maybe the petcock or carb is clogged?
This just makes it more confusing. I have the t and my intake lines up but the exhaust is the same as intake . But I also have three dashes to the left of the t

Has fuel & spark? Check compression. With decompression valve you should get around 70-100.
hi this is what I just bought a 2003 Polaris Predator supposed to be the starter is bad but I think so I think they moved the timing change can you help me more

intakes are .006" and the exhausts are .010" with a .0019 +/- tolerance. That is in inches so convert to millimeters

Aaron Carter oh and please make sure you take all the slack out of the cam chain between exhaust & crank and put the access slack between the intake and crank for the tensioner to get rid of

I think I got screwed over because with the starting girls is a little piece they so broke with a ring the one cranks the motor
jose gutierrez ya it's probably the starter. Take it off and bench test it with a battery. Power to the power lead & negative to the starter housing

jose gutierrez like is the starter spinning? Dont crack into the timing until you check that the starter and starter relay is working properly

Yes, due to lighting and angle I wasnt able to see but the camera was able to capture it just fine.
