This is what a technic set should be. Full of function with lots gears, moving parts and looks second. 25:00 Honestly I love the aesthetic of this helicopter. I strongly dislike how all of the new sets excessively rely on panels. This set looks a lot like the ones produced in the late 2000s/early 2010s, and because of that the aesthetic gives me a lot of nostalgia!
I completely agree, but I don't think that's the problem here. It's more a matter of a questionable livery and some proportions being off - especially the engine cowling being too large and prominent as Sariel noted (I'd also add the somewhat big swashplate and rotor assembly, which can't really be made smaller in Lego form however, especially with this many functions). The real helicopter is quite sleek actually, but the model seems a bit fat and short. Maybe it should have been just a hair larger as a whole to compensate for the huge gearbox system. All of that is almost negligible compared to everything else awesome about this set, though.
Dang, I didn’t think much of this set from just the photos, but it looks like a love letter to every technic fan who appreciates functionality. It’s a beautiful thing, on the inside ;)

I can use this set to explain to my daughter some day how helicopters work, because like me, she loves learning about how things work. Wish I had this sort of thing as a kid.
When it was first revealed it looked cool but like just a more expensive osprey and that the osprey had better value(for the retail price) but those functioning controls left me speechless. This set will definitely go down in history as an amazing set
21:16 *Actually,* a small few of the older Technic Helicopter sets, such as the 8412 and 8444 (and another that I forget the name of), also had implemented some form of rotor control (being operated from the cabin too.). It was at a time where Technic was choosing between form or function, and making a lot of specialised pieces that were supposed to be used for build complexity, while also making more flashy slizor pieces. Those helicopter sets were amazing for their small scale, and it's a shame it took Lego this long to get back to expanding on the same functions that existed so long ago
@@searme My main point is that it seemed like Lego was going to go in that direction with the interesting features of Technic sets, only for them to slowly become more about the looks than the functions. There are a lot of early Technic sets with functions that we would never see improved on for at least another 10 years. It's nice that Lego is innovating by introducing these new pieces, but it's a bit disappointing that it took as long as it did. The pieces introduced in those early helicopters for example, seemed to indicate that future sets would utilise them to a larger potential than tilting the whole rotor. Yet it took over 12 years for another set to have remotely similar functionality (I think). Although I guess stuff like that isn't as marketable and playable as the obligatory winch. edit: and to add, those sets were relatively tiny. While it's not as bad now, there used to be a lot more space being efficiently filled with functions in sets. No one would possibly expect helicopters of those sizes to have such a complex function these days, even though it could probably be achieved now without those wire pieces.

I've had the same feeling. Most of the 2019-2022 sets were licensed cars with very little or boring functionality and the theme was essentially dead for me with 42082 being the last real Technic set in my opinion. I still have some problems with the theme (colorful axles and gears, lack of B-models, the upcoming price increase), but this set could mean a better direction for Technic.
21:36 It is more of a VTOL airplane rather than a helicopter. I wouldn't consider it to be in the same category as the 2012 helicopter or the 2016 helicopter
If they would only reissue the flex connector the tail rotor control pedals could probably have been included, but hard to argue that this set needed the additional feature!
23:50 great idea to film this way, very enlightening. However, doesn't it also mean that in this setting the rotor actively is trying to push the helicopter _towards the ground?_

Now have it and am building it. Awesome machine. And you were not kidding when you said you have to pay attention when building. So far I have had to backtrack no less than 3 or 4 times to fix errors and I am not even done building yet (Bags 1 thru 4 done). Basically take nothing for granted and follow the instructions CLOSELY.
I love this set but one draw back I have noticed is that the bar pieces that connect between the rotors and the base of the rotor axle bumps against the white upper housing when the rotor spins
Very interesting set, from technical point of view. Now that you have the crucial parts for the swashplate, you may attempt building something slightly larger and truly beautiful. Great review, as always. Thank you!
A must buy for me! Seems to be the best helicopter since the Whirlwind Rescue from the 90s. The 9396 was a joke with no realistic rotor functions, but this is perfect. Very similar to Whirlwind Rescue but with better and more functions! Finally a realistic rotor!! And I actually love the visible technic parts and functions. It is very refreshing in this cover everything for the sake of looks times, especially the movable covers of the rotor control and engines compartment. That is pure genius! Would love to see more like this! How can it bee that Lego produces mostly hollow shit like the F1 car and this in the same lineup? I can't understand it. Technic is the best it has ever been if you buy the right sets, but at the same time it is the worst it has ever been if you buy the wrong sets... Thanks to Sariel and his fellow reviewers we he can find out what is what. Thanks for this great review!
From a functionality stand point, very much reminds me of the 8856 Whirlwind Rescue from 1991. It used the flex cables for rotor tilt (no pitch though). I think for the time and parts back then, it was quite amazing, and could easily fit a motor (even with a battery box). Would like to see a comparison between the two! :D
Considering 8856 only used 507 pieces and achieved almost everything the 42145 (2001 pieces) can do(except collective control and moving doors), not to mention 8856 also has a B-model. Functional-wise 42145 is clearly more sophisticated, but when it comes to flexibility and customizability the old 8856 still has the upper hand; it has official support to motorized the rotors, and with some work one can also achieve the same functions that 42145 has.
Built mine, found a problem, not sure if gearbox or motor. High speed rotor function running by itself has a lot of strain barely getting twice the speed over the slow mode, any additional force (shifting the pitch controls around or stopping the rotor by hand) completely stalls it until resetting the on switch or switching rotor to neutral. A pretty noticeable smell came off the motor after a couple of minutes of testing it out, so i stopped. It used to run just fine during an earlier test using some old batteries i had around, until it started having this stall problem. I changed the batteries to some generic duracells thinking the old ones were out of charge but it doesn't seem to be the case. I made sure the gearbox didn't have any unnecessary friction before putting the motor in, but with how bendy this set is and how easily some gears can be strained just by moving the set around it isn't a guarantee. Any clue?
Sariel I love your videos and always anxiously await them. You're right, this is by far the best helicopter set they've ever made. I'm actually a helicopter mechanic so the appreciation I have is boundless. I'd like to correct 2 things, if you don't mind. What you called a "rotating sensor array" is probably a FLIR ball, yes it has sensors in it but it also has cameras. So my second point would be that the "jib mounted fake camera" is probably a controllable searchlight. Great video and I can't wait for this set to be released so I can snatch it up!
Pretty nice and lots of functions. I would have liked two main colours instead of three and a smaller helicopter in the bigger scale of Mack or Arocs. Or a big helicopter like CH-53 Super Stallion with three Lego motors just like the real thing that can spin the rotor even faster. Sadly you can't build one of those, because you are limited to five blades with the new rotor part. I might still get one, but not for 200€.
Great and fair review as always. It was a brilliant idea to put a camera on the top of the blades to show how the cyclic control works. Despite the flaws, this set is a true masterpiece.
While the whole world busy reviewed Lion Knight Castle, Sariel go different way. This year Technic set I only buy 2 set, Airbus H175 & BMW M 1000 RR. BTW, after wathing Sariel review, I more passion to get this set. Day 1 purchase . I hope this Airbus H175 doesn't had V22 osprey gear issue.
I've been trying to get LEGO flying for some time now & as a helicopter enjoyer this right here will do me so incredibly good if I ever try it again. I am absolutely in love with LEGO for this set & I am so grateful you covered this set. I don't think I'd have found out about these amazing parts so soon without this video. Keep up the good work & thanks for the quality & dedication in uploads my dude
Great review! I already liked it when it was first revealed, and good to see it's just as impressive as it looks. Even when "motorised functions" sounds about as lame as it could be, I very much like what they achieved here with just one motor and a bunch of gears. And while I agree it isn't exactly beautiful, it sure is function over form. As Technic should be, and something they too often seemed to have forgotten. And hey, even the stickers feel totally optional here, now compare that to the BMW, the McLaren or so many other recent sets...
Is definitely in need of a rotor track and balance! I do like this set, I just wish it was in a different colour scheme. It's far too busy on the eye, so that's the reason I won't be getting this one. Great review, as always 👍
I'm happy we finally got a heli with collective and cyclic pitch control, but there seems to be a lot of play in the mechanism, especially the front/back tilt is hardly noticeable even when looking at the swashplate. Also I'm never a big fan of stuff being done with so many specialized pieces. However this is coming from someone who couldn't do it better. I once tried to design a rotor mechanism like this and gave up halfway through. Also I'm with you in that this heli's paneling looks ugly. I'm still a sucker for the old style of Technic, when the bodywork was just a wireframe and you could actually see the gears turning inside. Because that's just as interesting as watching the swashplate! Also thanks for teaching me all these technical terms lol
Functionality, and design fairly good, and I really like how this one is motorized out of the box without the need to add to the cost. Unfortunate about the structural integrity and compromises made to make the model affordable. Completely agree about the mixed color scheme as a solid color would give it a less fragmented appearance. That said have wanted a large scale Technic helicopter since missing out on the 2012 one so will definitely be sure to budget this one in. Side note. The complexity/engineering of this one definitely makes it look intimidation and most definitely one not to rush through as those are a lot of functions packed in with minimal space to make mistakes.
Sensationally implemented for Lego standards. The main rotor blade adjustment with the cyclic inputs and the mechanical collective mixer: very well done 👍 A few years ago I also developed a helicopter with all control functions - but also built in the collective tail rotor adjustment. I find that my version works a bit more elegantly since the whole system doesn't wobble that much. I would be happy if you take a look at the video! Simply enter "Lego Technic Lama Helicopter".
I'm sure that this set is a great building experience but the fragility and the fact the designers could have spent more time on the final look of the helicopter puts me off from getting one
Najprościej to obrócić łopaty i kierunek obrotu wirnika głównego.
Your reviews are ALWAYS the best! I love this helicopter a lot! Combining the transmission as well as a multidirectional gearbox has been a dream of mine for a while! My one complaint is the winch. It is connected with a single technic pin (with axle) which essentially serves as a weak clutch, and it cannot lift anything heavy as a result
A good bit of engineering, I was going to mention the military link, the M-175 is going to replace the Puma in the RAF, it’s a shame because I like the puma. Quick use the Land Rover parts and make a green one!
I also think the external arrangement of the gears for the winch, while a bit ugly, does at least mean kids will see it and understand its operation more easily.
Probably the fusalage should have been a little larger in scale, keeping the rotor as is, the ratio would have been better.. also, since i work for the main european (ehm, italian) competitor, i'm frustrated this is not one of our product.. ehy lego, if you read this comment i have some contacts for you :D
Can't wait to see how the parts in this set are used in MOCs. Awesome review, Sariel. And before somebody inevitably asks the dumb question of "Can it fly?", I'll answer that for you: Nope.
I honestly don't think the movement of the washplate was very well thought out on this set (the . I personally have the Lego 8412 Nighthawk helicopter, which was from 1995, and the response you get from the washplate by moving the cyclic around is phenomenal. The big difference here is this set also has collective pitch movement. One part of me would say that this is just a lot bigger and you end up moving around a lot of mass with 5 rotor blades, but when you look at the washplate in the video it is binding on the main beam/axle. In a way the performance of model is outweighed by cramming as many functions into one unit as possible nowadays, even if they don't work that well.
I'm halfway through building my Airbus, but I encountered strange issue. The collective seems to be very hard to move, is this normal? I think a lot of the resistance comes from the two gears on the left side of the mechanism.
Thanks for the review! A great functional masterpiece, but I don't like that neon yellow clash. Maybe if it has three of the colors instead of four. Sad that it is not as structurally sound as it could have been. I know Technic is all about functions, but I would've thought LEGO would have made a more robust model to be honest.
You say, smart hub' included, but that is a battery box isn't it? I have mixed feelings as a smart hub would have allowed a bit more flexible functionality for not much more cost to Lego, but on the other hand having a battery box might be more useful in other models than a smart hub as it allows motion with no reliance on a smart device
Love how Lego put a lot of effort in realistic functionality but the overall look is a huge deal breaker for me. Also the 5 blades are also big turn off as most helicopters are 2,4,6 or 8 blades so will be hard to use the new parts on a different helicopter moc.
This looks amazing! I've always loved Technic helicopters since the '91 8856 and it's tiltable rotor. This certainly takes it to a whole new level and looking forward to it. Great review as always Sariel and always looking to these from you :)
I have just finished this and it was a nightmare to construct. The outer parts are particularly troublesome and seem a touch flimsy. However it was worth the effort put in.Please dont let my opinion put you off just get it as you will be very satisfied once it is all finished..

Great review. This is a real Technic Set to me in terms of functions, just like last year's tow truck. I think I'll get finally my second Technic helicopter, my first one is 852 from 1978. But I'll also want to have the DeLorean too. And a Stand Up Paddling Board for next year's summer holidays. This christmas wil be expensive.
While this is a welcome addition, true to the Lego Technic spirit with original functions, I've got several issues with it. -You overstate the amount of functions. Articulated cameras and sliding doors aren't real functions, there isn't any mechanism involved. -Again, there is no B-model. What is the deal with it Lego? It reduces the play value of the set by half. -The price is nuts. They try to justify this with bloated piece counts. Did we really need a 2000 piece heli? -The build quality is once again shocking for a 200 euro set. But we just have to deal with it ever since they got rid of the nice and sturdy Technic bricks. -I still can't get over the blue, red and yellow pins and axles. If we managed to build Lego Technic with all black axles as 9 year olds, so should we in a "18+" set. This color salad we be acceptable only in Duplo. But this ship has sailed too.
The newest technic sets gives me hope that lego will make a comeback with their technic series (more gearboxes and motorization capabilites)

Lego + Technic + search and rescue helicopter + Airbus = shut up and take my money !
Do you know why sets cost equal the amount of euros as dollars?
Probably because euro = dollar these days.
I so want this lego helicopter
Nice vid as always
Sensationally implemented for Lego standards. The main rotor blade adjustment with the cyclic inputs and the mechanical collective mixer: very well done 👍
A few years ago I also developed a helicopter with all control functions - but also built in the collective tail rotor adjustment. I find that my version works a bit more elegantly since the whole system doesn't wobble that much. I would be happy if you take a look at the video! Simply enter "Lego Technic Lama Helicopter".
Guess I know what I'm getting myself for my birthday
I'm sure that this set is a great building experience but the fragility and the fact the designers could have spent more time on the final look of the helicopter puts me off from getting one
Najprościej to obrócić łopaty i kierunek obrotu wirnika głównego.
Your reviews are ALWAYS the best! I love this helicopter a lot! Combining the transmission as well as a multidirectional gearbox has been a dream of mine for a while! My one complaint is the winch. It is connected with a single technic pin (with axle) which essentially serves as a weak clutch, and it cannot lift anything heavy as a result
It is winch for minifigs, main winch HAVE to be under rotor, so CoM won't change much
But I don't like the linear clutch too, looks too out of place
Cool..
Why the dots? Did you expect a real flying helicopter? This is about as close to a perfect set as it gets
@@qoodles4032 Dots have no meaning..
It a cool model..
You need to get out more n chill..
All the Best from Scotland..
Looks a bit short given its height.
Not a fan of the exposed landing gear.
It's still not airwolf.
A good bit of engineering, I was going to mention the military link, the M-175 is going to replace the Puma in the RAF, it’s a shame because I like the puma. Quick use the Land Rover parts and make a green one!
Even though I'm not a fan of helicopters I might be getting this one.
I also think the external arrangement of the gears for the winch, while a bit ugly, does at least mean kids will see it and understand its operation more easily.
Is it out?
It's up and away ;)
Probably the fusalage should have been a little larger in scale, keeping the rotor as is, the ratio would have been better.. also, since i work for the main european (ehm, italian) competitor, i'm frustrated this is not one of our product.. ehy lego, if you read this comment i have some contacts for you :D
23:56 man that shot is incredible! is that using a go pro?
GoPro Session. And a pug ;)
...it took me a second to get I.E.L. joke, good job :D
Thanks Sariel for the thorough review! Love the set!
Can't wait to see how the parts in this set are used in MOCs. Awesome review, Sariel. And before somebody inevitably asks the dumb question of "Can it fly?", I'll answer that for you: Nope.
I find the winch unprofessional tbh, should have folded out from the interior or something
Swashplate. It's called swashplate.
The two speed rotor function is somewhat amazing to see
What is the name of the soundtrack at the start of the video?
I doubt this would actually fly, but if it did it'd be a wonderful sight.
I'm halfway through building my Airbus, but I encountered strange issue. The collective seems to be very hard to move, is this normal? I think a lot of the resistance comes from the two gears on the left side of the mechanism.
It will be fine when completed, don't worry.
tis set doesn't look much bigger then the 2012 helicopter I have, but the build is so dense in bag 2 an3. There are most of the pieces.
Actually, a smart hub probably couldn't be easily incorporated into the manual operation of this model. so I guess each has its uses
A jeden port huba jest wolny aby np. dołączyć światła??
No jest.
Thanks!
Well this thing just shot straight to the top of my list. Maybe real Technic is on its way back. Awesome review, thank you!
Why camera on 20:12 is marked as fake but sensor array immediately after is not? 🙂
How can I be sure it's fake? ;)
20:05 I think that’s a searchlight, not a camera
Insert "Helikopter, helikopter" Song XD
Hamster at 27:02 had to stay in place for a sec, he got realy impressed by this set
I have just finished this and it was a nightmare to construct. The outer parts are particularly troublesome and seem a touch flimsy. However it was worth the effort put in.Please dont let my opinion put you off just get it as you will be very satisfied once it is all finished..
Dose this mean we will get to see 42144 and 24146 soon ?
42144 is coming tomorrow.
@@searme can't wait. Love your reviews.
Thank you.
Very well review, only 2 stars for the looks seems a bit undervalued. I personally like the design of it.
очень хороший набор, спасибо за обзор!
Think I know what my next technic purchase is gonna be
The "camera" is a search ligjt. The hook seems to be a cargo hook. The sensor seems to be a small FLIR/camera.
What's that music starts at 6:32?
Funny how it has SAR (Search And Rescue) on the side, matches your channel name!

@@searme yess I placed the comment before watching the whole video 😁
Yay for new pieces!
...
Świetny zestaw świetna recenzja
Wow, Osprey 2.0.
It's good. But I think osprey is better.
Hi, @Sariel, why do you use gloves with some sets and don't use with other?
