Fun fact: Tokyo in Korean is 동경 (pronounced like dongkyung) which is the same word as "longing" (동경). So the title "Tokyo" doesn't just mean the city. He's talking about constantly thinking about something you desperately want and long for.

It's interesting that you mentioned feeling anxious because of his voice. I just read a musicians' discussion where they were talking about the composition of the piano chords, where on one end you have notes that are discordant and on the other side notes that are 'comfortable.' It's mimicked by the whistle, which has notes that are out of tune mixed with notes that are in tune, and by the raspy edge of his voice paired with the mellow intimacy of it. Also, a lot of Asian music doesn't follow Western chord progression, so there is some of that influence. Another person pointed out that part of the tune of this song is actually from their earlier song I Need U, only played backwards.

Ah, that's interesting, it reminded me of I Need You when I first heard it. Like, I keep singing, "I need you" followed by the chords in the chorus of Tokyo to myself.

Mono is really a masterpiece!! When you listen to all of playlist is becomes a one story. All of songs are deeply related to each other. Love hearing your take on the production. I was actually surprised that you'd be delving into this playlist so quick but I love it. This song sounds like an Intro to me. And I appreciate you picking up his voice sounding like he just woke up and that it is has thought put into it as to why it sounds this way, setting the tone for the songs to come. Nobody was expecting the playlist we got, everyone was thinking we would get the same as the previous Mixtape he released. Him hyped up and spitting fire, so I think some were even disappointed because of their mind being set on that. But he has a heart of a poet and a love of words. Music is his outlet for his emotions and this playlist really shows this.
Apparently the Korean word for Tokyo also means “longing,” so you were right on with the fact that this song is about homesickness! Love your videos!
Tokyo is my favorite song on mono. It's just really beautiful in a way I can't explain.
Mono is soooo moody and different and i really appreciate and love his singing! I know a lot of people were expecting all bangers but wow RM and the rap line in general have shown so many sides to them it's so amazing. Def throw in a listening party Joey
perfect interpretation of the meaning. the fact that you can tell it from just the instruments tells alot about your skills. To be honest i dont know why society thinks that a song that refers to human qualities like laying right next to you is always about being in romantic relationship between a woman a man or a man and a man and woman woman but instead it's more of a friendship more of a family more within himself it's so much deeper than the being romantic and thanks to BTS I've learned that I've learned to look past the romantic stuff and I guess that's why I don't listen to American pop anymore because there's always always about losing the one that your romantically in a relationship with instead I want to learn how to love those around me not just someone that I'm romantically in love with and I feel like that's something that draws me into BTS . I completely agree with what you said but I really wish I really do wish that Society changes to your thinking and I appreciate everything you do I really do love your videos but I'm sorry I just needed to get this out of my chest sorry for the rant

The whistling was interesting because on the one hand it kind of solidifies the loneliness-the echo. But they've also used the same kind of whistling in a few of their short films (Subs's First love & Jungkook's Begin).

This song's really special to me. Like you, when I first heard tokyo, it took me sometimes to really realize that this is in English and I was shook lol. And the feel, the mood of this song kinda made me wanna cry (actually I did cry). I really love the whistle part, it feels distant and somehow lonely in a sense. Love your reaction, really appreciate the new structure of the video, I'm waiting for more new contents in the future💜

RM did it again w the wordplay and not only refers to the city Tokyo but also uses the Korean word for Tokyo= 동경 (dong kyung) which means longing.
And “Torso” in Tokyo could bring several meanings too:
1. upper body (Eng/JP)
2. Corpse (躯)in JP
3. Tree w/ a heart rot (躯)
4. Sculpture of torso (ENG)
5. Incomplete/Unfinished thing (ENG)
6. Torn soul (abbrev.? Intentionally to be misheard?)
The beauty of this playlist is that I could literally feel the emotions JUST from the music and his voice even when I din't understand the lyrics.

Thank you so much for reacting to this album- this song in particular. The song is so introspective. It's so hypnotizing and really draws you into the mood RM's in. If this song came on in the middle of a party- BAM, sorry, hype gone. I would just feel like curling up inside myself on my bed, watching the rain fall outside the window, not wanting to do anything or talk to anyone for the rest of the day. RM did SUCH a good job on projecting the mood of this song. Also, love your videos Nato! Been meaning to comment for a while and say not many youtube reactors are doing what you do. They're mostly reacting to the artists themselves and not so much about how the music is actually produced. So many BTS fans have no idea what they're listening to and your channel is incredibly educational. I studied music and audio engineering myself years ago and it's so refreshing to see what you're doing. Keep it up :)
the anxious feelings you felt was also felt by many. This playlist tend to revoke different response towards individuals. The song uplift some certain mood that brought up by the melody.. i think the melody and RM's heartfelt voice remind you to something subconsciously.

Dang, I actually feel you on the tone of voice thing. Like, it almost made me uncomfortable or anxious, I'm not really sure why (though I'm a naturally very anxious person so there's that) but I could still enjoy the song and appreciate it artistically.

I think Tokyo throws everyone for a loop cause it’s so opposite of what we first expect, but it’s quickly become a favorite.
