This is the Desmond Castle located right next to Ireland’s best and most luxurious hotel Adare Manor. This Castle dates back to the 13the century there are tours available from Adare heritage centre, you can take guided tours of the castle and its grounds.
The building is located on the edge of the village of Adare, just off the N21 on the main Limerick to Kerry road. The castle was built around the 13th century.
This wonderful building is located on the main road from Limerick to Adare. The Desmond Castle is located on the left-hand side arriving into the beautiful village of Adare. The old building is located on the edge of the river Maguire.
The Desmond Castle became an important fortress and did belong to the Earls of Desmond. It was an important site for the Earls of Desmond, and the design of the castle was a defensive type with a walled ward surrounded by a moat. Moats were used to surround a structure typically filled with water and used for defensive purposes.
The castle has had a major programme of restoration works done and the castle has been restored to an excellent condition as you can see in this video. The castle changed hands many times through the years.
The castle was a stronghold of Earls of Kildare for 300 years and in the year 1536, it was granted to another part of the Fitzgerald dynasty family.
The castle is surrounded by a golf course and Adare Manor is located right next to the castle.
