So quick question I do fasting 5 days a week (I only eat between 10 am and 7 pm) but I always eat before a workout would that still be effective? There was a study of the lean muscle mass gains of mice on fasting and it seemed to indicate that fasting was beneficial with no change in activity. Whats your thoughts Scott?
ScottHermanFitness I have a couple questions for you. 1) I see in your videos you recommend the ass to grass approach to squats but I see from others (Train Untamed, Starting Strength) that I should just squat to parallel to reduce damage to the knees and increase the weight I can lift. Can you talk about the risk/ benefits of these approaches? 2) I also notice you recommend keeping your chest and head up during the squat vs looking down at the floor during the squat. Can you talk about risks/ benefits of each? Thank you!
Robert, those people are talking about low bar squatting. I have a video that goes over the difference between high bar and low bar. check it out! ruclips.net/video/MwTmrX6oIw8/видео.html
followed you in 2009-2010. im back 7 years later. good to see you still here and still helping people. you sure helped me get started back then. following you again. miss thos small blue shorts tho. peace from sweden
I just lift on an empty stomach. Lost about 80lbs of fat in a year. Even on a deficit, the fat just melted off as opposed to training fed at a different time of day, also on a caloric deficit. Working out fasted HAS WORKED FOR ME. And bloody brilliantly. My body is so used to it too. Right now, on a lean bulk. Hoping to hit 2xbodyweight on squats by the time summer's here! #TeamBulking
TheBlooRayChannel I lift on empty too, early in the morning when I wake up too! I find I can't lift as heavy as later in the day (because I am still waking up) but I have swimming in the afternoon and I try to seperate them by as much as possible
Well, based on the data you could be seeing faster muscle gains if you switched things up. Have you tried 15 minutes of hit a few times a week AFTER training? If you do, I would love to hear how your results went!
TheBlooRayChannel I used to weigh 270, found intermittent fasting, and now it's the only thing I do every day. I weigh 200 now, I'm lean, and eat whatever I want in moderation. I train hard every day. Really it's all about finding what works for you
I can't believe your hitting these awesome subjects. Most fitness channels tend to do with just vlogging, that is way much easier than conducting research and trying to aide people. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK SCOTT!
really like these kind of videos. Its clear a lot of effort and preparation was done in the making of these. They deserve a lot more recognition but sadly not everyone is into the science.
Always on point with your advise! You bring the facts and break it down for us so we can do what we do the right way. Don't know where I'd be without this channel! Respect!!
Was doing fasted cardio for about a month before my body started telling me that this isn't optimal. Since then I've been eating before and I can get way more done in the cardio session. Just listen to your body guys. Filling your head with this abundance of "knowledge" really hinders your own personal experience. -- Another great video btw. Thank you.
I'd agree with you, but everybody has something that works for them. I've been doing intermittent fasting and fasted cardio for over 18 months now. I have a lot more muscle, I'm super lean all the time, and can eat almost whatever I want in moderation and never gain any weight. Personally for me, I'll never eat 3 to 5 meals a day ever again, I love how I feel. But like I said everybody is different
This video is on point. I learned the hard way that fasted cardio isn't the best option. Now I do a lot less cardio, full of energy and stay leaner during my improvement season. Keep up the great work bro!
Very, very good video that answered all my questions about fasted vs non fasted cardio and their comparison with all the consequences to lose weight. Thumbs up n keep up the great job!
Scott, love your videos. You're one of the few people I trust when it comes to fitness. There is so much bro science that surrounds any non-expert in the gym, and your channel is hands down the best source for unbiased fitness information. You're the best man, can't wait for more good stuff coming soon.
Hey Scott, I have to say this is one my favourite videos by you and on RUclips. I love the time and effort you put into it and I have to say the information is abosultely great. Thanks
Good that I watch that now. I was doing HIIT for 2 times this week already and thought just keep going. Now I know i shouldnt do cardio on an empty stomach. Thanks a lot for making me not waste time!
I been doing fasted lifting for awhile and started fasted cardio like 2 months(cutting weight for vacation haha). I'm one of those people that prefer not having any food an hour or two before any workouts. Cuz either I feel like throwing up or making me fall asleep. If I have one of those days were i really need to have something cuz I feel dizzy or just can't work out cuz hunger I'll eat something small like a banana. It's just different for people. I'm fine doing HIIT. But yes some people can't and just need to eat before activities. It really is what makes you feel better
shared. I just started using a glyco supplement that hi mix in with my BCAA's. seems to be allowing me to help out with longer rep as at a higher weight. I never was a fasting kind of person though I enjoy food to much.
Scott I'd like to say thank you so much for giving this knowledge out to the people as well as putting up the references on the studies you've mentioned!! it's a great help for nutrition science students like meand my research!
I'm currently fasting on a only water fast. My primary reason for doing morning jogs is to maintain my stamina. Right now I can run 8 Miles and not even be tired afterwards. Does it help burn calories? No. Does it help keep me in shape. Yes.
This was SUPER helpful for me thank you!!!!! By the way I recently decided to make a fitness change and ALL of your exercise how-to's changed my game! No more awkward turtle in the gym! I'm a shy 26 yo, 5'2". In 2 months I went from 165-152 and see way more muscle definition. Huge thanks to your channel
I don't know about you but I would sum this up by: Calories consumed < carbs used up = caloric deficit = fat loss Maximise fat loss burn = intensive cardio or intensive workouts in general. Should be short but challenging. Workout is irrelevant. Heavy compound movements preferred. Minimise muscle loss = Balance of macronutrients with predominantly protein. Intermittent fasting = a waste of time and energy. Hence muscle breakdown occurs (glycogen levels decrease) Supplement consumption - Only if nutrition/meal plans are consistent and managed well. A good workout plan does NOT compensate for poor nutrition plans. Nutrition more important.
Scott ur videos are awesome. to add on, people also forget abt what cardio means which breakdown to breathing. my 3-4 steps are one breath in and out and realized about my rhythm in last three mnths which i think ws crucial. this gave me power that I have total control over my body fat. volume of CO2 release/breathing = fat loss!
I am following you from Turkey, Scott! I really like your videos and watch each of your videos. Most of the so-called fitness coaches in our country say vice versa. I believe you are the best in this field. I keep following you! Take car ;)
Great vid man. Always enjoy how you put the science and reference what your talking about.I also like how you don't put people down in these vids that challenge social stigma and ideology. For real though you look great. Been watching your post for a while and I can tell your ripped and more lean than ever. Going to make it tough to steal that DBZ tank top your wearing from you. L0L!
Great video. When I wake up, I drink two cups of water, then two cups of coffee. Then I eat an apple or a pear 15 minutes before training. I do inclined brisk walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes (level 10 inclination, 3 mph warmup for 6:00 then 4 mph straight to finish). I lift weights on other days. This routine gave me the best results for fat burning and keeping (or gaining) lean muscles. Fasted cardio kills my muscles and I can’t even train when in the keto diet. Ignore all these fads that pop up on the internet. They will be forgotten later on and rightfully so.
In terms of feeling off/dizzy/weak when you do fasted cardio, it's really about what you're used to. When I first started IF I felt really dizzy at about 10-11am for the first couple of weeks no matter what I was doing. Now I don't feel anything. I rarely eat before 1-2pm and don't feel hungry before then, irrespective of what I'm doing. You wouldn't find a caveman NOT running from a savage beast because he hadn't had his morning oatmeal.
Hiit is the best way to burn fat. You can even build muscle if you’re sled pushing, running uphill etc. but you can’t do hiit every day. Low intensity Fasted cardio, like walking, is a good alternative on days you are not doing intense training.
Just had to log in to tell you Scott, thank you for doing all these videos. They are really helping me make gaaainz! Keep em coming man. Much love from Norway
Just wanted to say thanks! After watching your videos i have improved so much and it finaly feels like i know what i am doing at the gym even though i only worked out for a year
As someone who is hypoglycemic, it blows my mind how people just don't want to eat. Eating is one of the most enjoyable things you can do as a human being. With a healthy diet and tons of exercise, you can eat all the damn time. Interesting video though, I'd heard chatter about this subject but thanks for clearing it up. Cardio is my favorite thing to do and it's more important to me to make sure I have the energy to get through sessions, rather than starve myself and feel a crash.
Red88Rex you shouldn't go hypo on an empty stomach in the morning, I get hypo spells as well and never had a problem with morning fasted cardio, your natural blood sugar rises in the morning for some reason, my friends a diabetic and he tells me when his glucose rises on its own without taking any sugars. Its strange because I get hypoglycemic if I do cardio at the end of the day and thats after eating 4-6 meals, yet dont go hypo on an empty stomach in the morning doing 45 to 1 hour faster cardio.
Red88Rex interesting. I’ve done 16 hour fast every day for the past year. I do not get crashes like I used to get eating all the time. Also made strength gains on this protocol
There's a guy who talks about intermittent fasting without even trying it. It takes a few days to get used to eat for four hours a day but when your insulin is low your HGH and glucagon levels spike and I am able to train as hard as if I ate and not loose muscle mass...
Excellent video! I've tried fasted cardio versus HIIT cardio and as far as fat loss and body composition and overall endurance the high intensity cardio worked much better. Sometimes I do still enjoy just a long slow run but that's more for overall Fitness and to clear my head. Really enjoy your videos! Thanks
Haha good stuff scott. i've tried HIIT cardio on an empty stomach i'm never doing that again. Soon as i got out of the gym shower i threw up all the coffee and pre-workout i had prior... and i've never thrown up from working out before
@ScottHermanFitness Just picking your brain here, but as far as Cardio, with regards to optimizing average weekly caloric deficit and body's use of fat stores, there's some suggestion (from different fitness professionals) that it's better to alternate between traditional long duration cardio and HIIT cardio, due to the stress of HIIT on the nervous system, where the recommended amount of HIIT sessions are 2-3 10-15 minute sessions per week, 3-4 30-45 minute traditional cardio sessions per week. Do you have any information or input on that topic?
I fully agree with this video. I had done a lot of research while running, and I came across some of the studies mentioned here, if anything not having carbs before doing my run always produced lack luster runs. Eating an apple and a banana 30 minutes before my run totally transforms my run. For weight training, I train in the low reps range, I train fasted and training fed doesn't seem to be better for me.
Love the shout out to int fasting. Have been doing it for over a year and love it! Also, I've found that two cups of straight black coffee pre-workout allows me to train just as well fasted doing heavy lifting, high intensity GPP/conditioning, etc as I ever did in a fed state. So it is possible to train w/max intensity in a fasted state if caffeine is involved.
Cool! Also, love the video you put out recently with how to improve squat depth. Huge pet peeve of mine when I see guys load up too much weight and 1/4 squat. Almost as annoying as curls in the squat rack. LOL I also wanted to give a shout out to pause squats. 2x p/wk I'd do 3x5 w/progressive overload using a 2 sec hold below parallel on every rep. This shot my squat up by 40 lbs in 6 weeks!
Hi Scott I'm from Wexford town in Ireland. Interesting fact my accent it is often mistaken to be a Boston/masitutous accent by people from outside Ireland. I think Boston a place called Wexford town. Really enjoy Ur videos, very well delivered 5:00
Thanks again Scott for doing the research and providing useful information. And thanks for providing the links to the reference material. All very useful. I'm excited for the last week of the shredded challenge! I'll be sure to share my pictures on your website. I'm amazed by the results already. You'll have to see it. Later bro.

Yea fasted cardio is beneficial not sure where Scott’s getting his info from..

Thanks bro!!!!
serious props for always listing sources, we need more people who focus on evidence based information
This is probably the single most informative video on fasting I've watched. Thank you, Scott. I'll be sharing this one.
I was born and raised in New England (Mass, NH, RI), but I live in Colorado now. So it's wicked nice to hear someone say CAAAARdio. I love it.
Isn't the fast very much broken with BCAA's since it creates an insulin response?
I love how positive you are and a down to earth kinda guy!! my son watches your videos too and they are so informative...thank you so much!! ❤❤
Thanks Gayatri! means a lot!
Probably the most informational 10 minute video i've watched in weeks!
Thanks man!
Very nicely explained brother. Everyone need these types of facts with proper research . BIG FAN .

+ScottHermanFitness Scott-what do you think of me doing circuit training immediately after my big lift for the day? Would that be similar to HIIT?
Finally a vid about fasting, really happy and trust what you said. Thanks Scott🤘🏼

Red88Rex but not all people feel hungry and / or don’t feel any less tired or energy doin cardio before , soooo shhhhhhh
Red88Rex people generally aren’t hungry when they wake , is that so mind blowing ?..
Ketosis will fix this 👍🏼
Loving the tanks tops man lol, Need to buy me some! Nice video Scott love these videos with actual facts behind them.
Thanks
Great video man!!!
Great video mate
HOLY FUCK the moment of enlightenment when he explains the etymology of breakfast!!!
Haha good stuff scott. i've tried HIIT cardio on an empty stomach i'm never doing that again. Soon as i got out of the gym shower i threw up all the coffee and pre-workout i had prior... and i've never thrown up from working out before
@ScottHermanFitness
Just picking your brain here, but as far as Cardio, with regards to optimizing average weekly caloric deficit and body's use of fat stores, there's some suggestion (from different fitness professionals) that it's better to alternate between traditional long duration cardio and HIIT cardio, due to the stress of HIIT on the nervous system, where the recommended amount of HIIT sessions are 2-3 10-15 minute sessions per week, 3-4 30-45 minute traditional cardio sessions per week.
Do you have any information or input on that topic?
Damn useful video Scott. I'm appreciative of the fact that you definitely did your homework on this one. Thanks for the great work.
You are very welcome! Thanks man!
Your the man Scotty H, over 9000.
Happy to hear that!!
I think the big question is how do you continue getting muscle mass and still shred fat so that abs are more visible
Love the shout out to int fasting. Have been doing it for over a year and love it! Also, I've found that two cups of straight black coffee pre-workout allows me to train just as well fasted doing heavy lifting, high intensity GPP/conditioning, etc as I ever did in a fed state. So it is possible to train w/max intensity in a fasted state if caffeine is involved.
man! yeah I am a black coffee guy too my bro!
Great video topic Scott! 👍🏽
Later bro.
great physiology lesson! Cortisol plays a big part too when fasting!
I salute you, Sir CommonSence! Minus one debatable topic for me.
Thanks so much!
