#oldhillbilly #woodcarving As a beginner myself, I started with this easy project to make (no eyes). . . and still learning, thanks to Doug Linker, for his tutorial session.
Great work. Enjoyed seeing your plan of attack. One thing I love about carving is if you can do this guy, you can easily change him up a ton of different ways. Thanks for your videos, I will be cruising thru!
It is an honor coming from the Master Carver, Mr Gene Messer, mind you sir, my carving style comes from you and one other. That's what I been telling them that my craft are bits and pieces from known carvers.
@Stacy Gerlich, Thank you. . . yes I agree, this was the early stages of my channel and still learning the craft (video taping). I really do appreciate your support.
Hello Dan, I really enjoyed the video and I learned some from it. Not sure if you would be willing to do so, but, would you consider remaking the video as there is a lot of great technique that all of us newbies could certainly benefit from. It is an awesome whittle and I certainly look forward to more of your videos. Thank you for taking the time that you invested into making the video.
@Duane T, thank you for the compliment. . . this video was done at the start of my channel and still learning with this craft (video taping), definitely I’ll consider making this again. After finishing (two project) at hand. You’ll know. Thanks again, stay safe Duane.
thanks Paul, I've seen your work, you started with the chess, the pawn . . . and looking forward on your series of videos. Your work on the Celtic Cross pendant was so impressive, the detailing. . .was just fun to watch and working in a nature setting is a plus. Barely a year doing this craft and still learning. . . your carving style and detailing. . .you got more ideas than I am.
Hi dan thanks for showing us your aproach ,greetings from Wales UK ive subd maybe one day i can put one of my attempts on my channel ,its hard to get baswood blanks here last lot i got i was sold as baswood but it was a pine and it was too hard ,wish it grew over here
Hi Indiana, I don’t know if you have a Home Depot in Wales, you know a big store with construction supply. I started with pine, just have to choose white, less grain, inner soft side of pine wood and with a sharp knife, will do the trick. I get my basswood at eBay and shipment cost to your place maybe pricey. Wish you the best @Indiana Tone.
@@dancarpio8130 Hi dan thanks for replying ,we do have stores but wish we had home depo here in england. I think ive found the solution ,its a lime tree and theres one up the fields from me and the farmer had cut some branches off so i tried them and they do slice well in fact it seems like your cutting a parsnip lol, so i can get down to some witling again once my hand heals as i sliced it last week ,lesson learned wear a glove, anyway thanks carry on carving buddy.
To my viewers, I understand your frustration. . . I am out of the frame at times on this video. . . that’s why I created “Old Hillbilly 2” (8 months ago)
This was the early stages of my channel, still learning the craft (video taping), in fact I did the “Carving Old Hillbilly 2” for that reason. I appreciate your comment @Graham Parr, it reminds me.
Thank you Ross Moore, barely a month at that time doing a video taping on this project, I lost my focus, it’s a working progress though. I was using my old GoPro cam. I appreciate your comment.
Hi SALL, this video was the early part of my channel, trying to keep it short and yes I get it. . . and today, the last 3 or 4 videos were at normal speed, keeping most of the steps with few skips that are repetitive… I do appreciate your comment and thank you SALL for watching.
I was just starting with this video (10 months ago), wasn’t equipped on “voice over video” yet. Working on it. . . thank you @Dwight Julien for watching.

This was my earlier project, still learning the craft, if you may @Michael Donahue, go check “Carving Old Hillbilly 2”, I’ve corrected my mistakes, thanks.
Your hillbilly looks great but you did not create a gnome hillbilly. You created a Nessie hillbilly. Nessie's who come from Norway are without eyes and gnomes have eyes.
Yes this was at the start of my channel (9 months ago) . . . at the time still learning video taping my work. Someone requested if I can make another one, so I did “Carving Old Hillbilly 2”. . . . I hope this can help you @Jim Talley
Yes Rich Tisch, barely a month at that time in video taping this project, I lost focus, besides I’m using my old GoPro. It’s a working progress though. Thank you, I appreciate your comment.
@Bob Fortune this was the early stages of my channel and still learning the craft (video taping a project). I’m using OCC and Flexcut detail knife and assorted hand chisel tools

May God bless you as well @Jon Pounds
Great carve. You were out of camera a lot. I tell you only because I was sad I missed some of the detail. New subscriber. I am going to give it try.

Like your hillbilly’s too, easier to carve without eyes & can change the hats.👍👍
Yes, without eyes were easier to carve and on this video, mostly I am out of the frame. . . still learning the craft
Great video! I am planning to do a chess set based on farmers and gentlemen, some great ideas in here. Thanks for posting - Paul

thank you @wooden Joseph, I made “Carving Old Hillbilly 2” and they show all within the camera frame.
Try keeping the work in the centre of frame🤔
This was the early stages of my channel, still learning the craft (video taping), in fact I did the “Carving Old Hillbilly 2” for that reason. I appreciate your comment @Graham Parr, it reminds me.
as Doug says , practice, practise, practise - I have only been doing this for a couple of months so lot of learning to do 😅
Yes, I'm still learning from them; Doug and Gene

Nice carving. I would love to follow it but many shots were out of view…. But still nice carving😉

Basswood 1x1x3.5”. Thank you so much Matteo Marengo
Nice but most of carving below knives. Couldn’t see
Thank you Ross Moore, barely a month at that time doing a video taping on this project, I lost my focus, it’s a working progress though. I was using my old GoPro cam. I appreciate your comment.
@@dancarpio8130 just wanted to let you know. Keep up the effort it will pay off. 😇🇨🇦
Really appreciate the encouragement
Enjoyed. Could be helpful if you put a dot or "x" on the work table and remember to keep the carving over it.
Would be nice to see without all the skips.

Dude you’re out of frame
yes @Calvin Dickson, barely a month into video taping my project, still learning at that time.
I like, but too much time off camera
Thank you David, yes I agree, this was at the early stages of my channel. . . still learning the craft. I made some corrections on Old Hillbilly 2
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your hillbilly looks great but you did not create a gnome hillbilly. You created a Nessie hillbilly. Nessie's who come from Norway are without eyes and gnomes have eyes.
Thanks @Douglas Morris and for the info
Your hand can't be seen half the time while carving!
Yes this was at the start of my channel (9 months ago) . . . at the time still learning video taping my work. Someone requested if I can make another one, so I did “Carving Old Hillbilly 2”. . . . I hope this can help you @Jim Talley
Nice carving…..but as noted….
Most technique out of view.
Yes Rich Tisch, barely a month at that time in video taping this project, I lost focus, besides I’m using my old GoPro. It’s a working progress though. Thank you, I appreciate your comment.
You need to learn to stay in the camera view
Too much off camera work. Saw a lot of wood chips and knives.
@Bob Fortune this was the early stages of my channel and still learning the craft (video taping a project). I’m using OCC and Flexcut detail knife and assorted hand chisel tools
@@dancarpio8130 you did a great job with your carving. please do more.
