    Just got this lens and have been using it on my A7 MK1. Both the camera and lens are fully updated. I haven't found autofocus to be too much of an issue. The lens is slow but it is accurate and has rarely hunted on me. Even in low light it has been good. The very powerful af assist beam on the A7 certainly helps. Coming from DSLRs the accuracy of the conbined phase and contrast detect systems has impressed me.
    I did try the lens on an up to date NEX-3 out of curiosity and found it to be almost unuseable. The lens would hunt and fail to acheive focus most of the time though I did the NEX test indoors.

    Yes, thank you for this review. Long story: I make photos of my paintings. My kit lens of my new full frame camera was a bit blurry at the left side, but very sharp in the middle and good enough sharp at the right. I was worrying it could be my camera and not the lens. I decided to buy this Sony 50mm lens (after seeing this review) to check if the camera is all right. And the good news is: my camera is ok and this 50 mm lens gives great image quality of my paintings, also in the corners (tested at F10, manual focus). So it was the kit lens that is probably decentered, but also that lens is still useful for photos with blurry backgrounds at lower F values.

    Nice honest review Chris, as always! You have become a reference point on lenses reviews. As other have asked, can you do a comparison between this lens and the canon 50/1.8 stm? Just got my a7ii and 50mm is my favorite FL, but you confirmed what other have said about this lens, and the electronic focus ring and the ugly flare it's a dealbreaker for me. Maybe an adapted canon its a better choice, I want your opinion, thank you!

    • @randallbrander8157
      @randallbrander8157 12 дней назад +1

      @@shotbyjayrc Sony A7C has no Front Dial and the Z7CII does also I believe it has a switch for Zooming Like the ZV Cameras. It only works on certain lenses but If you have a small compact G 24mm f/2.5 lens that can be zoomed to 50mm is awesome. I was leaning toward the A7CR but was talked out of it since I am a videocentric type of guy. A7CII I thought might be a better option than I saw the ZV-E1 and it was in white. Reflects Heat better than Black, small and portable and the stabilization was better than the other two. It overheats in the climate that I live in, and I miss the EVF more than a Rangefinder. So ZV-E1 & A7C are good cameras to travel with. A7C was the Mini A7III but I still like it. APSC 33mm or the Full Frame 50mm are usually the cheaper pime lens for any camera system. Small and Potable and a great focal length. What lens would you have with You all of the time. Zoom and a Prime?

I know ot might seem obsesive but it was a shot that due to the proximity of other things was useful to find the depth of field of the optic you reviewed. Perhaps you can shot anything with a ruler at a side of the subject and force the optic to two or three levels of aperture to show this more clearly. Thks again and merry christmas.

    Hi Chris, thank you very much for your review! On my Sony A 7 Mk. II I use the Canon EF 1.8/50mm STM via the Sigma Adapter MC-11 and it works very well. Do you see any advantage of this Sony lens compared to my combination? Have a nice day, Ralf

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 лет назад

      I wouldn't know, really, as I haven't tried that myself. I've got a feeling that the Sony lens is actually a little sharper than the Canon, but if what you're using now is working nicely for you then go for it :-)

      @@aineiasbabulis1512 Hi, back when I wrote this comment, I used a Sigma MC-II and a Metabones adapter. The Sigma was better in my opinion, but AF performance suffered with both adapters. Almost two years ago I purchased a used Nikon Z6, sold the Sony along with the adapters and now I use a Fringer smart adapter. It is better than both adapters I once had for the Sony especially with regards to AF performance. Best wishes, Magnetron

    The slow focus is the reason why his nickname is captain slow :D Did you applied the latest firmware updates? I heard this reduces the focus times a bit.
    However thanks for this review, now iam more certain that iam saving for the zeiss 55mm.

    Bought this lens and love the image quality. My only complaint is the build. It feels like it's made with the cheapest kinds of plastic. Don't know why Sony didn't just build it similar to the 85mm 1.8 which, although cheap, feels more premium.

  • @MaxwellStarr
    @MaxwellStarr 6 лет назад

    If it weren't for the sluggish AF, I'd consider selling my 55/1.8 Zeiss and buying one of these so I can put the extra money into a different lens for my A7ii.. but this lens just doesn't have what I want/need and the Zeiss just sets the bar too high.
    On APS-C though, I absolutely love the E 50/1.8 OSS, probably my favourite lens for Crop E-mount.

      This is the FE 50mm f/1.8. Yes, it's compatible with Sony's APS-C cameras - you can see in this video me testing it on a Sony a6300

      35 mm sensor size (Full frame sensor size)
      50 mm is focal range

    If you look at the optical design of this vs the Minolta AF 50mm 1.7 they are pretty much the same. This lens just adds that extra space to account for flange distance from A mount to E mount

      Minolta didn't use an aspherical element. The Canon 50 F1.8s are more like the Minoltas than this lens, and most Double Gauss/Planar 50's look similar.

    Chris could you possibly re-review this lens with your bodies having the latest firmware updates? If you can especially concentrate on the autofocus performance. I have similar setup as you with A7RII and a6500, but never bought this lens because of this review, and still am looking for a nifty fifty for a good price. Once guy on youtube re-reviewed his after updating his firmware on an A7iii , and received major performance updates on this lens as a result of the firmware update. I was hoping you'd do too, since we have similar setup.

    Great review as always. But I am a little bit surprised to hear you complain about the size of the lens. I have seen many 50mm 1.8 lenses from many different manufacturers, but none of them (including any needed adapters) are shorter than this one, as measured from the sensor. Some of them are slimmer though.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 лет назад

      Every Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens I've handled is smaller than this one, and the STM one is about half the size!

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell 6 лет назад

      Christopher Frost Photography yes but you must consider that Canon EF has a much longer flange distance. Sony cannot break the laws of physics or perform magic. As measured from the sensor, this lens is not big.

    I think the gap at the back of the lens is so that you have room for your fingers when holding the camera, because the grip is so close to the lens mount.
