  • In January 2021 we visited the Shenandoah National Park to take the epic trail that is Old Rag Mountain Loop. For us, this challenging hike was a 10.3 mile venture that included 2,635 feet of elevation gain to a 3,291-foot peak. It also included a wicked rock scramble that was over a mile long - and an exposed, rocky summit with breathtaking panoramic views (or was it the rock scramble that took my breath away?). There is good reason that this hike is the park's most popular - as well as it's most dangerous. The day started sunny with light traffic on the trail, but ended with sleet and snow as we found ourselves alone for almost the entire descent back to the trailhead. It was a truly epic hike that should be on any avid hiker's bucket list!

    Great video that captures the hike well. I did this hike two years ago with my son when I was 62. A feeling of accomplishment for sure. Thanks for sharing especially since videoing during the scrambles is tough.

    Beautiful day for a hike! Glad you got the snow at the end though and not while scrambling :)

    I hiked Old Rag several times as a kid in the 80's and don't remember it being very tough, unless they made a new route. I still have photos of the scramble. Glad to see they still use those blue rectangle marks.

      I'm glad we were able to bring back some memories for you. The main rock scramble should be the same as what you experienced. A little challenging for those without a lot of reach - or upper body strength. The route that changed was the path to new parking to help with the crowds. But it's still a memorable and fun experience. Thanks for commenting.

      @@criscale3667 Thanks for the info. I guess I was too young and didn't have any comparisons. For some reason Old Rag was the only mountain my parents ever took us to hike! I also remember they had a natural spring near the trail that had incredibly cold and sweet water.
      I'll have to revisit it soon, the last time we went I was 12.

    Thanks for another wonderful video. We hiked Old Rag yesterday and I was happy to find your video of the hike. I have hiked Old Rag for many years from my base in the Washington DC area. It continues to enchant and inspire, as does your video.

      We appreciate your thoughts on this hike. This was one of our earlier videos - and we have since learned a thing or two about what makes for an interesting video. Hopefully we are getting better. Old Rag is indeed an epic hike - and one that I hope to include on a "best hikes of the east" video in the future. It is a personal favorite.

    I finally got to do this today!
    It was super fun. Was a bit cold up top but the view was amazing.
    I did an out and back due to time. A little over 3 hours almost 7 miles. I did sunrise and when I came back down, tons of people were coming up.

      I can only imagine what it was like being introduced to a rock scramble on Old Rag. It sounds like you still had fun. You can come to NC and try Grandfather Mountain next!

    For someone who is not fond of heights, how doable is this? 😬

    • @criscale3667
      @criscale3667  2 года назад +8

      There is a lot of bouldering and rock scrambling, but not much near ledges where fear of heights would set in. If you keep your focus on the task at hand, there is no time for fear to arise. I think this is a reasonable hike for those with a discomfort of heights.
