Woodturning - Maple Burl with Designer Epoxy, Pohl Barn Inspired Bowl
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 янв 2025
- Woodturning - In this video I combine maple burl pieces with three different colors of resin to make this incredible one of a kind bowl. This bowl was originally going to be more of a pedestal bowl that's inspired by Doug Moore of Pohl Barn Productions but I didn't quite get there, either way it's an incredible bowl. I also do an update on the double walnut crotch hollow form as well. Please like and share.

Jim, made this bowl for my wife. I cant say enough how incredible this bowl is. One of a kind. Absolutely stunning!! My wife almost fainted. Thank you, so much. Jim
Thanks! That’s awesome, I’m glad she loved it!
That piece is very beautiful, I can tell how much you love your wife. God bless
I love the rings in the bowl. It really adds character to this bowl. These bowls are really more art sculptures than bowls.
Thanks so much!
Hello. I'm from Malta 🇲🇹. It's amazing how you can turn a piece of wood into a piece of artwork. This bowl is beautiful. You should be proud of your work 👏 👏👏. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
I am, lol. Thanks for watching!
the dance of wood with epoxy is perfect congratulations 🙏
Thank you very much!
I watched this one many times! Absolutely LOVE it!
Awesome! Thanks!
Jim that piece is incredible and the little spots of burgundy is just perfect. I know you wanted more of it but I just think it is absolutely perfect. Keep on making those beautiful pieces. God bless
Thanks so much!
Doug would be proud Jim. I love the black and gold showing through, the burgundy is just a fantastic highlight. I love it. Great Job. Beautiful piece.
Thanks Jane!
I love this bowl,it’s all about what makes the wood POP !
So true, thanks 🙏
I too am disappointed that more of the burgundy/maroon didn't show up in this piece, but the end result is still so amazingly beautiful. Great job -- as always. Was also glad to hear that the beautiful double walnut crotch resin bowl stopped moving. Love that piece as well.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed both pieces.
Jim to each his own, if people want to see Pohl Barnes Dough 's work they must watch him.
I don’t have a problem doing a style that’s not mine, even Doug didn’t have an issue with it. I did put my spin on it, so all is good, thanks
That is gorgeous Jim! I love the fact that you have taken something from Doug’s turning. He’s a great turner & is always surprised when he produces a great project.
Thank you very much!
That bowl is absolutely one of the most beautiful bowls I have seen to make. Its awesome
Thanks 😊
Good evening, Jim. Wowzer! Beautiful! That was a lot of resin and no cracks. Wood, resin, design and finish. Top shelf project.
Thanks Ray!
Holy cow, Jim. That is a fantastic looking bowl!
Thanks 🙏
Love it, even though the burgundy didn't show up much it became the minor highlight instead of the gold. Love it ❤❤❤❤.
Thank you very much!
JIM THATS A GREAT BOWL .THE COLORS ARE AWESOME .FROM DOUG
Thanks Doug!
I am running out of adjectives to describe your work Jim. It is lovely. 🌞
Thanks Ray, I really appreciate it!
Looks like fire 🔥! Love the burgundy and gold together, beautiful. Omgoodness! Love this style. Great job! We need an "inspired by" series.
Thank you so much!!
Oh my gosh, Jim! This ended up awesome! All of the colors blending and moving together they way they do makes it such a visually stunning bowl! Great job! 💜
Thank you so much!
Even seeing it only on camera, the burgundy came through. It ended up almost a bronze-ish finish. Gorgeous!
Agreed! Thanks!
Jim this bowl is very attractive, the colours complement each other perfectly 👏👍
Thank you very much
So glad that you stepped outside of the box. You just keep getting better error and betterer.
Thank you very much
@@SpragueWoodturning darn spellchecker. Sorry 'bout that.
Wow! A "German bowl", black-red-gold, the colors of our national flag! 👍👍👍Best regards from Wuppertal, Germany, yours, Wolfgang.
Thank you very much!
@@SpragueWoodturning 👍👍👍
Wonderful drama in the piece and the outside scallops enhance that drama 👍👍
I think so too, thanks
Wow, this has got to be some of the most successful color separation you've had! Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Another fantastic piece. I was also disappointed about the burgundy not showing through. It was a beautiful color. Came out great all the same 👍👍
Thanks 😊
Every time i think "this is my favorite piece" you come and surprise me with another new One. Amazing arte. Thank you so much!❤
Thank you so much 😀
I love it when you guys learn from each other (pohlbarn & …). It really moves these techniques to new heights.
Totally, thanks 🙏
Your idea of putting an air hole on the bottom and then using compressed air to release the epoxy is brilliant. What a great idea, but of course your Canadian so that’s expected. 🇨🇦
It is a great idea but I can’t take credit for it, someone commented that they do it that way and it worked great so I tried it, thanks 🇨🇦🇨🇦
@@SpragueWoodturning while you may not have came up with that idea, you could say you perfected it. Lol
@@SpragueWoodturning thanks for all the videos you put out this year. It’s been a joy to see you work, so thank you and merry Christmas.
Wonderful color mix gives me the impression of a cave and torch light.
Yup, I see it, thanks 🙏
Wow I'm speachless its stunning ☺️❣️
Thanks 😊
Amen to that!
I think this is the one I am watching on TV. What a MONSTER burl that was. I’ll find out soon if it’s the same one.
Us women have to multitask. 🙃
Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
I'm not usually a fan of bowls, but this one is definitely an exception to the rule! It's amazing! Way to go, Jim!!!
Thanks a bunch!
I look forward every Friday to your videos! I can't wait until I have a better paying job next year so I can gift your beautiful artwork!
Thanks 😊
I really love burl. The fire in the gold is amazing. Beautiful job again.
Thanks 😊
Oh my gosh,Jim we love it. We love the colors you picked.
Thanks 😊
Very pretty. Not usually a fan of dark colors, but this won me over. Designer Epoxy
Awesome! Thank you!
Because of all the small burls you used for this project I thought a set it 3 or 4 "placemats" would showcase the wood. What you did though, very neat and the small flecks of Red really catch your eye 🥰
Thanks 😊
Absolutely stunning pieces. The resin colors are elegant with that wood!
Bravo!
Thank you so much 😀
Another amazing piece! I feel honored to learn about your trade and watch you work. 🙌🙌
Thank you very much
I really enjoy seeing different profiles on bowls. Thank you.
Great, thanks for watching!
At the risk of sounding like a broken record.....another killer piece Jim.
Thanks 🙏
Привет мой канадский друг. С удовольствием смотрю твои видео. Очень хорошая чаша. А столы какие-то лавки не пробовал делать. Благо у вас там клёна и другого дерева хватает. Здорово получилось. Спасибо за видео.
Thanks for watching!
Another beautiful bowl with so much going on in the resin colours. Thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
AWESOME IS RIGHT! Great job, and one beautiful bowl ❣️👍✌️
Thanks 🙏
Wow another stunner!
Im glad to see the hollow form complete too
Thank you!
Beautiful bowl. Thanks for doing that unique profile. The black and gold really make the wood pop. Very nice!
Thank you very much
Beautiful project today, and very much looking forward to fractal cutting boards with resin
Thanks 🙏
I love the shape of that bowl. It relly brings out the contast between wood and epoxy. 👍
Agree! Thanks 🙏
Really like that! Love the ripple like effect on the outside of the bowl! Great Job Jim!
Thank you very much!
That has so many different designs in this this bowl, just beautiful!!
Thanks 🙏
Wow, I really like that fluted edge! I think you were right, that it does really emphasize many of the lines of the design. It's also very cool to see a departure from the usual!
Colors-wise... I'm an alum of the University of Minnesota, and the school colors are maroon and gold... So what I'm trying to say is that I personally have had my fill of that combo for a lifetime 😆😆😆 Looking forward to the maroon one coming up though!
Besides that, I really like how it turned out with the majority black & gold! It looks like scenes from mystical desert sands. Very cool!
Totally get it, lol. Thanks 😊
Jim ; that bowl is incredibly beautiful; a stunning piece .
Thanks 🙏
Great design, awesome resins mix. It's a beauty.😎👍👍👍👍
Thanks 🙏
Wow for sure, what a gem; sharp!
For its beauty, and just as you said that the black would take the center base color.
Really like when you incorporate gold, and lemon yellow I think it was.
Thanks Jim
Thanks 😊
This turn was very interesting. Like the different exterior shape of this bowl.
Thank you! Cheers!
That's amazing on such a deep pour not having much issues. The red and black mix would look awesome in a burl vase.
Thanks for watching!
The resin looks like moving lava. Love the mixture of the colours. 👍
Thank you very much!
Call it the "Arcane Inferno", cause it looks like dark mage fire, beautiful piece as always Jim, well done.
Thanks 🙏
I agree 100% about the first finish coat. It's really exciting when evwrything just comes out of nowhere!!
Totally! Thanks
That is the most phenomenal piece of art. The colour coming from the resin is so rich and the burl sometimes remind me of coral or seashells. Amazing work.
Thanks 😊
It's a gorgeous bowl, Jim!! I agree with you that more red would have added to its beauty.
Thanks!
Hi Jim both of these pieces are great, another great job, well done.
Thanks 🙏
Great looking bowl!! I'm not a huge resin fan, but in spite of how much you used with this bowl, there's plenty of beautiful wood character in this piece!!
Thanks Joe!
WOW!! That is just beautiful! Love the way you did this bowl. You should be proud! Just absolutely beautiful!
Thanks for watching!
Jim, great bowl. Yes I agree the purple color didn’t come through due to the black, but coupled with the orange, make the bowl come alive. Again, great contrast and I really like the profile.
Thanks 🙏
What a giant, lovely bowl. Didn't miss the red at all...🙂
Oh, we will see the burgundy at a later date, lol. Thanks
I absolutely love the ridges you put into this bowl, gorgeous
Thanks for watching
I'd like to see more scallops on the sides, and at the top edge too. It looks fantastic!!!
Thank you very much!
WOW! 🤩 I love this piece! Very cool profile and the resin is so amazing. Truly beautifu!
Even my 11-yr old wanted to buy this bowl 😆
Lol, thanks for watching!
I have watched Doug of Phol Barn Productions, like his quirky style. I love you work. Keep reaching, I often wish I could turn some wood.
Thanks for watching!
Great bowl. Yeah you had a great burgundy color. Have a great day.
Thanks 🙏
I really like the black and gold combo. Another great job!
Thanks 🙏
Wow the color variation and sparkle are amazing!! I am also very excited to see a burgundy bowl in the future
Me too! Thanks 😊
I really like 👍 your work. Beautiful 😍 bowl & yes we could see the burgundy color.
Thanks so much 😊
Watching this one now (half way through I read the comments because this one is so cool with the balls / I think they turned based on the weight of the Saturn orbit around each ball / just a guess). I can’t wait to watch your videos each night!!!
Thank you very much!
One of the nicest pieces I’ve seen you make thus far. Absolutely beautiful.
Wow, thank you!
Really like this one where you did some of those waves on the outside I do a lot of that myself and my customers love it, because it's not a traditional looking bowl.
It’s different and that’s usually a good thing, thanks
My favourite colours. Stunning bowl again
Thanks 😊
I really like the color choices here. I like the idea of having a hint of red or maroon shining into the black like a black cherry. That would be awesome with a nice piece of cherry or cherry burl if that exists. Thanks for sharing
I’ve got a couple of cherry burls that need some love, might see them soon. Thanks
Very much look forward to that!
Excellent way to start my day - watching you create beauty.
Thanks 🙏
I love the gold. All the colors are fabulous!!
Thanks 😊
Also, late commenting here (life got away from me, lol). I love the look of this bowl. It's too bad you couldn't get more cores out of it, but such is life.
Yup, can't win them all, thanks!
In the same broken record boat as CanaDan. Another great piece. I approach bowls the same way. Plan on the largest and adjust for a better design. Thank you as always.
It’s the only way, thanks 🙏
Hi Jim I'm from uk and have been watching your videos they are brilliant
Glad you like them! Thanks
Oh sweet lord!! That is one of the most beautiful pieces I've seen lately! What a great job. You should be proud of yourself. I'm sure the new owner will get much much enjoyment out of it.
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent job with the epoxy. You do well with the colours not completely mixing, especially with six litres!!
Thanks 🙏
I really like the profile. Those soft ridges give an interesting look and texture to the bowl. Nice one
Thanks 👍
This is absolutely magnificent and spectacular and stunningly beautiful.
Thanks 🙏
Nice to see something with features. Turned out fabulous. You need to do a signature bowl for yourself!
Got lots of them, lol. Thanks for watching
Agree!
I bet you have everyone in the family covered for Christmas gifts each year!!!! 😇 🌲 🌳 🍁 🎄 🎁
Love the design of this one
It’s certainly not my normal, but I like it too, thanks.
I really like that profile. I prefer the curved edges of the wood or burl when multiple pieces are used rather than a straight cut line. But, that profile adds a feature that goes well with the straight lines. Once again beautiful work!
Thanks 😊
Both of those pieces are beautiful.
Thanks 🙏
Great bowl! The core would be a beautiful hollow form.
I think so too! Thanks
I thought the red with black combo from the first pour looked the same colour of congealing blood - not an easy colour to achieve. Well done Jim, greetings from West Sussex, U.K.!
I really like that color, we will see it sometime in the future, thanks 🙏
Breathtaking! It's one of the best pieces I have seen. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Jim, that bowl has a lot of character going on. Great piece!
Thanks 🙏
Wow, something a bit different! I love them
Thanks 🙏
That bowl is beautiful!!! I'm sorry the burgundy disappeared into the gold and black. I am glad the gold dominates the black.i like that shape it's lovely and also good for gripping it when it's full of goodies
Yum, yum, thanks 😊
Next time chill on the black. Just a touch of black like maybe less than a half a liter. Looking forward to the next time you do one of these wood and resin bowls
I really love this bowl!! Like you, Id have liked to see more burgandy but as it is, its fantastic! I love the very interesting profile!! Its very different and absolutely beautiful!
Thanks Jim
Thanks for watching!
