Yeah the shadow realm was just a nightmare realm where you would have to spend eternity alone. Like Mai being stuck in a glass prism slowly filling with sand for all eternity all alone while her actual body is unconscious and worrying her friends is a fate far worse than death. After a while I’d assume people in the shadow realm wish they died.
@@J99___ in regards of Mai, that wasn't the shadow realm, as it never existed. She being in an hourglass was meant to represent her loneliness and not being able to break from it. So you could say it was her mind that made it and Marik augmented it so she would feel trapped in it. Again, shadow realm inlsnt a thing, but the dub sure made use of those instances trying to tied their invention to the original creation. Sort of like what "Joey" says in the dub about saving the world and such, and people (especially in the US) used to brought up how dumb it was for then to "save the world" through card games. In the original, Jonouchi never said anything about saving the world, nor did the other characters. He tried to prove himself as a duelist, you could argue that it is as dumb, but it makes sense in the setting of this universe. They acknowledge that they were just playing card games, but it took them to an underground world they were not expecting to find.
The issue is that it was mega overused. Works for "death by loosing duel", may work for "coma for loosing duel", but it sucks for "falling from window" and "replacement for saws"
Somehow the idea of mystical relics and a “shadow realm” feels far more believable than people straight up killing each other over a card game. But maybe that’s just me
@@YugiohEverything If you think about it, they didn't want to scare little kids who watched the anime...hence why they changed it to being banished to the Shadow Realm
[Kaiba]: "No, exodia! no one has ever been able to summon him!" [Yami Yugi]: "Because it's so hard?" [Kaiba]: "No, because no one knows how to play this game." ~ YGO The Abridged Series Iirc correctly then people besides Yugi's grandpa did not even have 5 pieces of Exodia and Pegasus would prob not even bother trying since he had his dead wife on mind, Kaiba probably was also not into this, since its not dragon lul Tbh also other thing is I think that Yugi actually probably had more than 5 pieces, too, iirc he used one piece to defend himself 1 turn before he draw last one (also iirc then there was a mistake in anime and they shown that yugi had two of right arms in the duel against kaiba) if it wasn't recorded to happen then how tf are they supposed to know it did happen at all
I think what I really like about it is that it directly connects the powers to the stakes. It created a sort of consistency within the show's world. Plus, as a kid growing up in a non-religious household, I think the threat of the Shadow Realm was more effective than death or hell would have been. Death is hard to wrap your head around (even as an adult), and the Shadow Realm essentially provided the same stakes / punishment as Hell without the religious connotation. Plus, it allows them to directly illustrate it, so a kid without predisposed notions of damnation (like myself) could still understand. (Even if I had been Christian, I might have found some odd implications from the show stating that a good person could go to Hell just because they died losing a card game. I think 4Kids dodged a bullet there either way; avoiding the religious connections altogether was probably for the best). (Despite what I've said, it still even kinda works as a censorship tool. The Shadow Realm doesn't lower the stakes for the characters, but it DOES create a disconnect from reality - the threat is real to the characters, but the Shadow Realm isn't real so the kids won't be scared of it happening to them).
The weird thing about the Shadow Realm is that during the Battle City arc it actually improved the logic of the show, as sending the Pharaohs soul to the shadow realm was a much more realistic goal for Marik than killing the Pharaohs host body.
@@xplorer2111 because killing Yugi would not get rid of the pharaoh, it would merely send his soul back to the millenium's puzzle until the next person was able to solve it
The Shadow Realm made an interesting plot point actually. It was a tangible punishment that could actually happen to the protagonist, and was brutal enough to be terrifying. You'd never believe a show would kill off a protagonist, but put them in a coma while their soul is chillin' in discount hell/trapped in a card/whatever suffering it would inflict this episode was a very real concept to kid me. It happened to Mai even. That said, Kid me also didn't buy the shadow realm business for a bunch of the Duel City Saw-lite deathtraps. Paradox's saws were just 'freakin' laser saws!' to kid me, and I just expected them to slowly disintegrate the loser after it cuts off their legs. However, I did buy into the whole 'bombs that create a portal to the Shadow Realm' bit from the tag duel with the mask dudes.
See, kid me was highly confused in the tag team duel when they repeated talked about how "when the glass shatters, the losers go straight to the shadow realm" with 4kids adding that purple glow to the glass, and then at the end of the duel, the Rare Hunter guy has a parachute...and everyone acts like that would make it fine. Kid me was like "How would a parachute protect you from losing your soul to the Shadow Realm....?"
The Millennium Rod primary power was mind control. So Mai was not trapped in the "shadow realm", she was trapped within her own mind forced to face her greatest fears.
I don't know if it's really more merciful. After Bakura's demonstration the Shadow really became just an endless void of nothingness where you would wander for eternity as loneliness and sensory deprivation slowly drives you mad and slowly kills off all your humanity. There was actually 1 duel that they couldn't censor and that was the duel of Yugi versus Joey with the anchor. Not only did they not censor that they would drown underwater but they also made the threat to Tea clear. That if Kaiba tried anything they would kill her.
I always felt the Shadow Realm was a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, you could conveniently place characters there without killing them and simply pull them out when their time was up. On the other hand, death feels much more merciful than being trapped in a realm of eternal suffering with no way out. I also found it kinda interesting Darkness used a similar method in GX, sending people into Darkness and living their own personal hell.
Well I mean the jelly filled donut thing is pretty obvious. Even back when I was a kid I always got the feeling that wasn't quite right. However a lot of people bought the shadow realm thing hook line and sinker, and I think it's because 4kids honestly did a good job covering themselves most of the time with it, the only time I can think where I found it weird was the duel with Arkana.
Losing a card game is one of the greatest sins of the Yu-Gi-Oh universe, and immediately condemns you to hell. But don't worry, there's always the chance that one of your friends might know a bit of necromancy.
The Shadow Realm/Stars/Nether Realm concept is way darker in my opinion. Kind of twisted to censor death and replace it with living in an evil dimension of darkness and nightmares for eternity. That would be horrifying. Cool... but horrifying.
Sebastien-Loik Ntsangou-Kanda Little kids can't catch onto this though. Not that the target audience, which consists of children, is the actual audience.
Yami no sekai, as has been mentioned. It is a thing. But only in duelist kingdom Arc. Also, a shadow game can do those things, there doesn't really have to be a place. Especially since the shadow games' effects are said in the manga to "not be real in the normal sense of the word." Shadi explains this, then adds that they can kill you just the same. Mai was trapped within her mind. Joey apparently was dead, but somehow resuscitated when marik was defeated. Bakura's body was consumed by marik's shadow magic.
Hell, Yami no Sekai may not have even been meant as a real place. Pegasus just said Yugi's Grandpa was there, I'm sure being trapped in a card felt like being in a world of darkness.
I just now realize, even with how much the dub messed things up, it's kinda commendable that they could invent a concept completely unrelated to the source material and integrate it so well intto the story that we wouldn't know it's fake unless we researched it ourselves
sonicandco Mm, someone pointed out that it's really just a more fleshed out Dark World, which is what Pegasus used originally. They then just stretched it to the other villains and bam, they drastically increased the consistency of the show(a massive improvement over the original) while avoiding the concept of death, a choice that allowed Yugioh to thrive in the U.S.
In a way, the shadow realm lie is kind of like the introductory to why people need to not take things said on news for granted, you just never know if they could just be spinning a gigantic lie based on a few instances of truth.
I wouldn't say the original show was inconsistent so much as it tried to do something new every arc. The dub changes makes things feel a lot more same-y in comparison. But I do agree it was a brilliant way to cover up the death.
I think a reason for that though is that the magic of the millennium items is not very well defined in the original. That left a lot of room for interpretation.
It is bad for being nonsense. Contrary to popular belief, changing the dialogue does result in characters and stories being changed, breaking Pierrot's promise about not changing the story. Pokémon: The First Movie is also like that too where originally, Mewtwo never planned on using the storm to destroy the world, and was trying to find a purpose to earn its place. Japanese Ghost Stories does have funny scenes, and feel like solving mysteries.
The Shadow Realm is adapted from the concept of the Dark World (yami no sekai) that was actually present in the Duelist Kingdom arc of the anime, though not in the manga. The Dark World is where Pegasus trapped Yugi's grandpa's soul with his Millennium Eye (as opposed to actually sealing it in the video tape like in the manga). Shadow Realm is actually a fairly accurate translation of that. 4Kids kept the Shadow Realm going because it was an easy way to censor the concept of death for kids. In all honesty, I think it works pretty well, a lot better than some anime dubs, such as Dragon Ball where they get "sent to another dimension." Same concept, just a lot clumsier. The Shadow Realm is already a concept native to the Yugioh universe, so it works in the internal consistency of the anime already. Granted, the Dark World never really appeared after Season 1 in the original, whereas it became a staple of the dub.
GamingTopTen....the Shadow Realm is a fiction, but Shadow Games are real. The purple stuff is composed of dark magicks, the source of power that flows thru the Millennium items. And if you recall, the Millennium items were a product of a blood sacrifice; the 99 villagers of Kul Elna
Yeah, and often Shadow Games would have a "penalty game", which was easily translated as 'sent to the shadow realm'. The actual effect in the manga varied pretty widely. Some penalty games apparently resulted in death, some drove the victim mad, Kaiba's actually made him a better person. However, Shadow Games weren't something some rando like Pandora could do.
It states in the original anime and manga that all those deaths were absolutely necessary and gave good reasons. Plus, some were brought back with the millennium items I'm pretty sure, but they were all justified
CrystalBloodMoon Rising Seto Kaiba had underground deals with Yakuza to intimidate hapless people (one of them even commit suicide) ALL FOR BLUE-EYES WHITE DRAGON.
so when they talked about the shadow realm in the dub they were really talking about hell lol so when littlekuribo in the abridged series had mokuba say "seto melvin is invoking the powers of satan again" he wasnt far off then! lmao!
There was an arc where a character who died in the 4kids dub of One Piece during the Arlong arc was photoshopped into scenes to appear that they weren't dead for several episodes until they ceased to be mentioned further.
Who?..oh right ...man namis backstory is pretty shitty and well I gotta get back into one piece..its a series that seems meh at first but once you see the backstroke emotion and just everything it is so good..way more than your average kids show
Only watched the Sub so I had no idea they did that How did they explain her surviving the fact that she was 100000 bugs short on money to give Arlong when he fist arrived at the island? Did they cut the scene where Arlong shoots her? And Bell-mere considered Nami and her (adoptive) sister her own daughters, there's no way she would have let Nami join Arlong's crew if she had been alive. This messes up Namis backstory so bad and imo her whole character too in a way. Screw that.
In the 4Kids version they throw her in a "dungeon" and then despite never mentioning a death she's never shown again. It's really dumb. I'm sure it's on RUclips if you look it up somewhere.
Thanks. But man, way to ruin a backstory and a character. I mean One Piece has a lot of strong female characters, physicaly and mentaly and Nami is definetly one of my favourite Anime characters. Without her proper, full backstory you can't really appreciate what she went through and why she's so awesome imo, what a waste :(
There was an attempt to redo it officially with the original cast, but it never went past the first episodes of Duelist Kingdom. It was more faithful, but it still kept residual dub items (Katsuya Jounouchi became Katsuya Joey). No real marketing and low sales doomed it. This was also late into the dub anime's airing, and by that time, it was too late.
What? They never re-dubbed Naruto? First of all, Naruto is Dubbed by Viz Media, not Funimation. Secondly, the way Naruto got censored on TV and the way Yugioh was censored is completely different. For Naruto, they record the Dub uncensored, and later edit it for TV, and leave the Uncut versions for the DVD's. Meanwhile, the Yugioh Dub Script is censored before the voice actors even begin recording.
I like the Shadow realm explanation more than the Japanese explanation. Think of all the times characters were sent to the shadow realm just to return. There is no return from death.
wes owen I don’t think any shadow game really had death as the penalty. Pegasus just trapped people in cards. Malik basically put mai in a coma but kept her alive to ensure Yugi and Joey had something to keep fighting for. Malik assumes Joey would be killed when Ra attacked, but there was never an official penalty of death. That’s why Joey was able to recover after surviving Ra. The only one that did die from the shadow game is yami Malik.
@@TheEpic22 Actually yami bakura dies in the sub in his duel with Tami marik, marik explains that the power of ra is so strong that it will kill you, right before he nukes him to death
In the original manga plenty of characters die in the Yami No Games (shadow games). Mai wasn't killed she was trapped in her own mind while Malik's spell slowly killed her.
I don't think the concept of the shadow realm was the biggest lie, but THE FREAKING HEART OF THE CARDS! since it doesn't exist in the original version either.
It is in the original, just not to the extent that it is in the dub. It's mentioned a few times during Yugi's first two duels against Kaiba (only the latter of which is seen in the anime that got dubbed), but it's never implied to give Yugi these "super draw powers" that it does in the US version.
Fun Fact: In the Japanese version of GX, Titan is trapped in the "Yami no Sekai" which translates to "Dark World" or "Shadow World". And he comes back from it. Asuka's brother is also trapped in the Yami no Sekai in the sub. But that's the only time the Yami no Sekai is mentioned. And in the sub, the ruler of the Yami no Sekai is Darkness.
In the original, the World of Darkness was that dark aura that surrounded Games of Darkness. Yes, the Japanese GX anime ripped off the lie that the 4Kids English dub of Duel Monsters made up, and made their cheap bootleg of Zorc Necrophades the creator of it just like the dub made Zorc the creator of the Shadow Realm.
Censoring Death with hell. Now I'm no genius, but that seems like trying to censor a Lesbian relationship by making them seem like really close cousins. Oh wait...
I think the shadow realms was a great way to censor it. It also makes it at least a little more explainable when a character comes back to life vs back from the shadow realms
Yugioh Everything nope, in the Japanese, manga and Kai redub it is over 8000. Also I think 4kids did a way worse with with One Piece than with Yugioh. This is supposed to be an emotional scene but it's so hilariously bad ruclips.net/video/PT83Gsy59mk/видео.html "If you can't pay the cash then you're out with the trash, and feel free to quote me!" He was supposed to shoot her dead in that scene lol.
Just waiting for the Vrains dub: Shoichi Kusanagi - Fred Burger Aoi Zaizen - Milley Montanna Akira Zaizen - Roberto Montanna Go Onizuka - Go Forward Naoki Shima - Dylan Steel Revolver - Nerf And if you fall from your D-Board... you wake up in the real world with a headache and feeling sad.
"Milley Montanna" there's no way they'd base a character's name off of Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana. If they really name Naoki "Dylan" though that'd be absolutely hilarious. Also the Nerf thing is way too dumb because that's a licensed product and intentionally makes him sound weaker.
Revolver's dub name sure is the hardest to think about. They will probably go with an computer term for his name. We're talking about the company responsible for Strong Ishijima becoming The Sledgehammer, so we can expect creativity xD.
A meme made out of a lie Edit:the only time the dub straight up changed the hole plot of an anime and was praised for doing so is in the case of «Ghost stories»
Greatsaiyakirby we are talking about yu-gi-oh here where having good dub is considered a utopic outcome There is a huge variety of good dubs and in famous shows Db Yu yu hakushou Fate(all) Code geass and the list goes on
I mean, the original Voltron was technically a dub of GoLion and they changed it completely from the original (for the better, the original GoLion wasn’t very good).
Okay so as a kid I never questioned anything in YuGiOh because of how much I loved the anime. (Except for the part where Kaiba almost committed suicide in duelist kingdom, it was so obvious even for me as a kid, and when Yugi and Kaiba dueled those two rare hunters on the top of a skyscraper as you mentioned. I always thought they would just fall to their death.) But anyways after I learned what Hell was as a kid, I always thought that the Shadow Realm was used as a euphemism for Hell, until I found out it was for Death instead which actually made less sense to me because if the characters die, then how can they just come back to life? I understand it's probably some Japanese thing but like wtf that would actually make less sense for an American kid watching the show. Plus the duel between Bakura and Bones and that other guy, as you mentioned were literally sent to Hell, may be the best case for 4kids using the Shadow Realm because the FCC forbids the mention of anything religious in children's TV shows so the only thing they would be able to use is the Shadow Realm.
Im pretty sure at least Shadow duels were a thing from yugioh season zero. You know, when monsters appeared and people were mindcrushed. Its not exactely the shadow realm, but its pretty close.
Wouldn't be the first time that worked. The original dub of Dragon Ball Z glossed over death with a similar concept: "The Next Dimension". It was very poorly done too, so having Funimation redub the series made a huge and welcome difference.
a redub would be awesome, but i doubt see 4kids ever giving up the license for the yu gi oh series. which is a shame since i know either viz or funi would treat it with utmost respect. unless someone at funi decides to addlib some * insert current issues here * bullshit
Phillip Bouille if it were to happen, guys like Yugi & Kaiba’s dubbed voices need to stick around. Their voices were really good. Oh, and keep the dubbed soundtrack too
So everytime a character was send to the " shadow realm " and then it came back it means that caracter was killed then revived ? Wow so many times caracters can revive in yugioh
Nobody ever mentions how one of the most elaborate and twisted death games was entirely unaltered. The one of Yugi vs Joey at the peer with the anchor. The entire set-up is still there entirely unchanged including Tea's life being threatened.
In many cases I was ok with the shadow realm idea. The concept of being damned to hell by a villain sounded pretty extreme... the only times I thought it was dumb were touched on here. The saws, the rooftop duel etc. Sure, rip souls from bodies and make slave zombies of their bodies but don't kid around with falling 20 stories to your death.
Kids are indoctrinated all the time to believe that there is such a place as Hell, where their flesh will burn for all eternity, so I think they can handle that definition
And so was Sailor Moon. That show got redubbed with no eps. cut and almost close to the orginal source thanks to Viz Media. Maybe Funimation would resume doing the uncut version of the YGO anime from years back and redubb Yu Yu Hakusho in the process.
Ghawk You forgot Cardcaptor Sakura. The only thing similar to Cardcaptors is that it's about little kids collecting magical cards. Hell, the show was originally called Cardcaptor Sakura, yet the dub tried to make Li Showran (Syaoran Li) the main character.
Shadow realm is genuinely a good euphemism for death. And it’s become a fairly iconic meme, too. I’ve often heard UFC fighters and commentators refer to knockouts as being “sent to the shadow realm.”
There are instances of major plot points getting changed in English duds, even changing character motivations or the threat that villains posse. One big example of that is with the Dark Signers. In the original, they were dead souls, while the dud made it so they never died. This makes the Dark Signers’ motivations weaker and less understandable. However, since so many people watched the first two Yugioh series in the dub only, the shadow realm is probably the biggest lie. It’s odd that they didn’t replace the Netherworld with the Shadow Realm in Yugioh 5Ds dub, since the shadow realm was already well established.
I never got to the dark signer arc in the dub so when I watched it in Japanese with subs like 3 years ago, I was really taken off guard when I saw all of those characters dying in flashbacks and especially when they killed the cute shy girl with the goofy glasses. I forgot her name. I thought that was messed up. XD
When you think about it it's pretty interesting how 4kids came up with the idea of the Shadow Realm, taking the World of Darkness/Yami no Sekai (the place where the soul of Solomon Muto was placed after being absorbed into a "Soul Prison" card by Pegasus) and expanding it to be one of the most integral aspects of the entire dub
The fuck, you know how much more the concept of the shadowrealm creeped me out compared to death when I was a kid? Death is simple non-existence, nothing terrifying about that shit, but eternal torture? What the hell 4kids.
The biggest dub lie was that Pot of Greed lets you draw 2 cards. Scholars say that the translation of the original effect still remains lost to this day and making stuff up like that for such a mysterious and illusive effect was downright disgusting of the dub. For shame, oh sorry, 4Shame!
I knew that most of the time it was a substitute for death, but there were a few times where characters "sent to the shadow realm" came back like Pegasus, Marik's good half, Solomon Moto, and both Kaiba brothers, so I thought that in those cases there was just a shadow realm. Like Arcana was obviously not a shadow game and Hank Ishtar got stabbed to death, but I thought that if they specified that it was a shadow game than it was more of a soul loss and that you get be brought back because you didn't die a natural death. So what happened in those instances that allowed those characters to come back?
Huh. Pegasus is dead in the manga. He's only there in the ''Fillers'' in the anime and it makes no sense. Yet, his death was never shown in the show so it kind of work I guess. Solomon, Seto and Mokuba were not in the Shadow Realm, not in the manga at least. They souls were imprisoned into cards, were they could see the world but not moove. So not dead. Just a very different power. Pegasus could just take your soul. That's what he does. And Marik's... Well he was stuck into is own mind. Just like Atem/Yugi sharing a soul. But because Yami Marik is not as kind as Yugi he would not let Marik back. And then Marik puts a part of his soul into the Ring... Then this part was destroyed by dueling alongside Bakura. But Bakura survive because of a part of his soul that was into the Puzzle and Marik survive because the rest of his sould was still in his own mind. Then there's the duel between Yugi and Marik, were their soul were to be played, but as they had two (YamiMarik/Marik and Yugi/Atem) they had to accept to bet the ''non-yami'' soul because as we've seen with Pegasus, being in the duel of darkness could kill you if you're not strong enough. And... Well I don't know if there's any other moment were there problems like that... Mai was stuck into her own mind, twisted by Marik... All of those make more sense when you read the Manga really. Once you've reached the point when Shadi can enter your mind and change things in it, it's just way more simple to understand what happens.
Solomon never goes to the shadow realm. In fact the duel of Pegasus versus Yugi is the first time it's mentioned. I also knew it was censorship though I do wonder that if those black/blue sphere's wasn't shadow realm than what were they? It's not unique to Marik as Pegasus did the same thing.
I actually didn't know 4kids went out of business seeming I gave up on the dub half way through 5ds so who dubs the show now? Is the dub of yugioh actually decent these days? Not that I would ever change back im just curious lol. I will say the one thing I did like about 4 kids was their choice of voice actors. They were much better and more fitting to the characters than most dubs I saw. Too bad 4kids was awful for everything else.
4kids didn't entirely fade away. Konami themselves are doing the dub, but I think have been staying consistent to how 4kids handled the dub. (Granted I only watched the first few episodes of Zexal, and haven't watched Yugioh in quite a while other than sometimes rewatching 4kids' original Yugioh dub.)
I think I agree with your assessment. The concept of the shadow realm was lighter than death but as good as dead. That being stated, the biggest difference was how the script morphed around that and other implications of death. I believe if death and violence were left in the anime as threats (not just some explicit gore porn like other modern anime) then a lot of the story would've been taken more seriously and we'd have fewer "let's settle this with a children's card game" moments.
I never watched the Japanese version of the original series, but how did they cover the "come back from the dead" without the Shadow Realm? It just seems to me that a space where the way to get there is through some form of magic seems much easier to explain coming back from than Heaven/Hell.
Thats exactly it, the shadow realm actually fits and like, makes sense more so than death in some cases. The only time characters legit "died" was Bonz, Mariks father, otherwise they got sent to another "realm or plane" like Mai did after the Marik duel
Characters were never killed and revived though. The graveyard kids were killed off for good and never came back. Mai and Bakura were never killed in the first place. They just got sent to another realm (but not specifically referred to as "The Shadow Realm").
Yugioh Everything....actually Mai was imprisoned within her own mind by the Millennium Rod. Marik used the primary power of the Rod; mind control to torment Mai by making her face her greatest fears.
KAO S What's freaky AF is that in the English dub she's trapped in a hour glass that was slowly filling with sand as she watched her friends forget about her. In the Manga (and I can only assume the original Japanese) it wasn't sand, but flesh eating beetles. So yeah, that was some sick stuff.
I've heard about this before. One thing I always wondered, if all the dark purple clouds don't mean 'the shadow realm,' what was the explanation for what was happening?
This is why I like the Naruto series because whoever dubs it for English doesn't give a damn aboutbbeing kid friendly and just has the lines word for word to the Japanese version
Most store bought Naruto DVDs featured the TV edit which features less blood and swearing, but doesn't rid it entirely. The tone of some scenes and religious themed were also cut. This was also done by DBZ. But in both cases there were uncut dubs available for home purchase too. Yugioh And other 4kids series tried this but discontinued the uncut releases for unknown reasons
Wasn't Naruto also censored? Didn't Itachi just "abduct" the whole uchia clan, instead of killing them? I could be confusing it with the german dub though, which was heavily censored...
Naruto had two dubs back in the two. One that aired on Toonami that could met the standards of the PG rating on tv and the other for uncut home releases. There are rumours that there's two Dragon Ball Super dubs right now. One for toonami/uncut home releases. And the other for when they broadcast in syndication in a earlier time slot. So that means they use the H word for Mister Satan.
@@djcrimsonsunbird3607 Yes; Yami-no-game was the phrase for Shadow Games in the original. However, the punishment was often death or some slew of mind-bending stuff. Trapping people inside their own minds, making people hallucinate fully that they're on fire or that trash and leaves are cash and coins, that sort of thing. The punishments were often a fate worse than death, but they were much more concrete than the Shadow Realm.
Goodroosters yea sure when Judai or Jaiden and his friends went back for Jessie in other dimension losing duel means losing your life but 4Kids can’t have the characters saying that
+Dee X Jay To be honest the whole send to the star stuff even as a kid sounded to me like there way of saying that there died (kinda like when you say someone is under the ground to say he is dead)
Honestly I think if they had actually dubbed season 4 they could've used that to cover up the plot hole that Zane's heart disease you know didn't kill him after his duel with Yubel. I remember watching those episodes in sub and thinking a lot of time passes before Zane shows up again and that duel was specifically stated to be his final moments. So the way to explain this is that being sent to the stars actually stalled the heart disease. Long enough to get Zane treatment.
In the long run, "over 9000" made little to no difference in the fight and had no in-show impact beyond that one scene. Meanwhile, the Shadow Realm had in-show impact for the entire run of the series.
Y'all think them saying Bardock/Burdock was a brilliant scientist was funny?? Then you obviously haven't seen the Big Green Dub. There's a whole bunch of dubbed gems there. What's even funnier to me is that that dub is supposed to be serious.
Yugi: I'll make him pay for sending my Grandpa to the Shadow Realm! Yusei: The what realm? Yugi: The Shadow Realm. The dark, purpley cloudy place you go to when you get stabbed in the chest, or they fall from a really high place, they go straight to the Shadow Realm. Jaden: I'm pretty sure you're talking about Hell. Yugi: No it's the Shadow Realm. What, they don't have the Shadow Realm in the future? Yusei: I don't think that's a real place. Yugi: Wait, so...is my Grandpa...really...dead? Jaden: 'Fraid so brosif. Yugi: I thought this was supposed to be a KID'S movie!
One thing that I'm surprised you didn't mention is the duel of Yugi and Joey when he is controlled by Marik. There it wasn't censored at all. They were going to be dragged down to the bottom of the sea and also Tea's life is in very real danger. There were a few details like Kaiba's card not getting stuck in the Rare Hunter's hand but the stakes of the duel are entirely unaltered.
When you think about it, the Shadow Realm is actually a lot more worse than death. To remain in never ending darkness and turmoil for all eternity. It kinda gives me shivers just by thinking about it.
it happens, in peoples mad dash to not tell kids they will die one day... they end up making something sound a hundred times worse. they forget the old saying "some things are worse than death" does apply.
A good amount of people do! But there are still thousands and thousands who don't know its a dub only concept! Heck I didnt know until a couple years ago
I Watched it in the original Japanese sub, after seeing this I feel extremely lucky I never saw the full dub. And the difference was shockingly HUGE. The Japanese version is much better story wise and death wise. Plus Marik and Yami- Bakura...dear god those two actually made me cry from sympathy. By the way I have a question for you, do you feel like Atem was more of the bad guy after seeing the villains stories? I sure as hell did. Sympathy for the devil and all who follows him. (AKA: Yami-bakura, best character ever besides the fact that he sounds like ash katchem In the Japanese version. A deeper voice would have suited him better, that's the only compliment I'm ever going to give to the dubbed version.)
a lot of the changes were bad but the shadow realm was creepy and a lot more consistent than this character sends you to the shadow world, this character sends you to hell and this character just traps you in your own mind
In the memory world arc, I was Team Zorc, so yeah...Atem was kind of a douche/antagonist who didn't care to listen to anything Thief King Bakura had to say, and offered no sympathy whatsoever to the people who were victims of genocide...he only seemed to care about his own. Bakura is the best ever! And the woman who did his voice does the voice of Ash, so you picked up on that!
in yugioh season 0 i think yami bakura seemed much more intimidating than in yugioh gen 1. but i did feel bad for bakura. what i found kinda odd and pointless was trying to get revenge on atem for destroying his village when it was really atem's father who wanted the millennium items made and i dont think he even knew that theyd have to sacrifice all those souls to make the items. i think it was all atem's uncle's falt or something. what i didnt like was how when atem found this all out, he was like, oh no thats terrible. and then hes like but all the ppl in that village were bad so its ok that they were killed to make 7 magical items thatll protect egypt. and it was weird how when atem was fighting zorc, atem kept implying that they would win cause theyre the good guys and that zorc was evil and a dark spirit and that theyd win with theyre "pure" millennium items. and i was like uh what? all these items are dark and have control of the yami games and were made by having to sacrifice tons of souls. i mean this fight was more of just a big mess that was caused because atem's father wanted magical items. after all, zorc is some sort of spirit monster thing that was made from all the souls of the ppl that died in bakura's village to make the millennium items. zorc wouldnt even exist if they didnt kill all the ppl in bakura's village. in season 5 i was more on bakura's side.
As it stands I've never seen the English or Japanese dub but rather the Chinese one. Though, I can only assume that no elements of the show were altered from the Japanese original aside from, obviously, the spoken language. I'm assuming this since I sure as hell don't remember a shadow realm of any type being present in the original Duel Monsters anime.
Yami Bakura's backstory is pretty much left completely intact. I mean sucking out the souls of people like that is pretty much the same as killing them.
I personally thought that the shadow realm was more scary/tramatic then dying. Think about it. Your soul is just to serve the purpose of power to an evil individual and all you experience is a realm of darkness for eternity with no Redemption. Doesn't matter how much of a good person you are. you just lost a game. still gives me chills.
The shadow realm basically means that people get sent to hell, regardless of how good they are. If anything the shadow realm is more terrifying than just simple death. After all, the character weren't just dead, they were getting tortured in the afterlife.
That's right! 4kids didn't Just Take Away your Guns, Blood, Tits, Profanity, Character Personalities, Character Development, Important Plot-Elements, Important Plot-Progressing Dialogue, and Character Motivations! They LITERALLY DENIED THE ENTIRE CONCEPT OF DEATH ITSELF!!!!!!!
The people who think the shadow realm was in the original are probably thinking of when yugi would "open the door to darkness" to punish jerks in the original manga and anime aka "season 0". Also you forget dragonball z did it first. People would get " sent to another dimension" instead of being killed
yeah but DBZ got an uncut dub, or well a redub that restored a lot of the original concepts. so uh most new fans and old have better access to those newer dubs, but yu-gi-oh only has this one (and a failed uncut dub that didn't go far)...
Even though the 'shadow realm' wasnt real, I still enjoy the concept. It sounds cool and gives explanations to the visual 'shadow realms' that we saw in the anime. Such as when there were shadow duels where they'd be engulfed in the shadows and darkness like again Pegasus and Marik.
In the German version. They played a Shadow Duell and the looser was sent to the shadows. Basicly the same as in the English version. But I think ur theory has one hole.... the joey vs marik fight. In that fight, parts of marik and joey were consumed by the shadow realm and they suffered because the shadow realm made the monsters and the dmg real. Causing joey to collapse. If there wouldnt be a shadow realm. How would that be poasible
The fox is considered the devil in Japan. When I used to watch Naruto I never understood why this animal was specifically used but it makes more sense to me now when I rewatch Naurto and know that "the devil is in this child" and the village knows it. I also came across a Duel Monster card called the Nine Tailed Fox, type FIEND. FIEND in Duel Monsters is translated to "DEMONÍO" in spanish not "demon"... in english. A "Kyuubi" is a demon in japanese lore. Dragons are also associated with "the devil" in many cultures... The 7 dragon balls we all know of were used to call upon a dragon whom the god of that world created. After obtaining the orbs the dragon will grant you a wish.... It's also safe to say that when you have committed the 7 deadly sins you get to see the devil
Here's the thing as the last brutal as it is when you think about it this shadow room idea was much more horrifying and scary than the original idea of death itself in a sense it was more a limbo of Torment vs just blatantly dying if you look at the original vs. Is Shawn around midea the original idea just seems like a final destination card game versus this seems much more horrifying falling into a portal of Abyss and darkness it just seems evil and scary and should actually have became Canon over time even though it was from poor kids yes but it was a pretty cool idea pretty cool concept the Japanese should have taking up over time in future installments even if it wasn't originally their idea it was still their characters if they wanted to steal the idea from 4Kids they could have done it a hundred percent and the company would have had nothing they could have done about it
Actually, I've watched the duel between Seto Kaiba and Yami Yugi in S0 and Yami does mention something that gave inspiration for the shadow realm. So while it doesn't exist in the Japanese, it does have a equally scary senonym
Well I for one think that the Shadow Realm was a better explanation than death in a lot of cases. For instance, it makes much more sense that Joey and Mai came back from the shadow realm rather than coming back from being dead
They didn't die, though. Jonouchi was _nearly_ dead; Mai was imprisoned within her own mind inside the hourglass due to the Penalty Game that Yami Marik used on her and she would die if they didn't defeat Yami Marik and dispel the Penalty Game in time.
Don't know if it'll ever happen, but I'm hoping in the future, some dubbing company (like Funimation) will do the YGO animes justice and give them all proper dubs
They did plan out something like that during the fall of 4Kids and the Zexal series. Believe it or not, Johnny Yong Bosch was Yuma and Vic Mignogna was Shark. They dubbed a stupid amount of episodes in a short amount of time to deal with the switch up of licensing but it eventually got scrapped.
So when people are sent to the shadow realm, and they're no longer in their bodies, are the just in a coma in the original or something? Like for example, Joey in the Battle City arc. Also, Mai and Bakura in the same arc. Interesting that it was added in for the english dub, i never would've guessed. It fit's so well!
Yeah, in the sub, there's no Shadow Realm but the Shadow GAMES still exist. Basically, thanks to the Millenium Items, you can play a game where surnatural forces intervene and the loser will receive a punishment. In the case of Mai, it was to be trapped in an illusion, and in the case of Joey, the punishment was feeling the same pain as your monsters and he fell into a coma because he was barely revived after the attack of Râ. Because yeah, for about a few minutes, Joey was clinically dead.
The shadow realm is wild because it never occurs to the writers that this existential nightmare realm is by all accounts a way worse fate than death.
You got that right they basically made their own version of hell and thought it was kid friendly
Lol right?
@@TheRandomTubeTV i mean the option of escape was always presented, but we hardly saw anyone ever leave the shadow realm.
The Shadow Realm was a pretty creative way of censoring death imo
Tarlo The Boar fine I’ll give them that
*I unironically like the Shadow Realm.*
The Shadow Realm wasn't 100 censorship as demonstrated with Bonz's fate, Zorc's last Shadow game etc

Somehow the idea of mystical relics and a “shadow realm” feels far more believable than people straight up killing each other over a card game. But maybe that’s just me
Yeah it definitely is just you

@@krs1297 no it’s just you people just killing each over a card game is stupid and a lot less believable

The biggest yugioh lie was that nobody ever summoned Exodia before
LOL thats true, we see his grandpa summon it in Ancient Egypt in Season 5 xD
Yugioh Everything thats true but technically it was the exodia cards that had never been summond before. not talking about the real monster
sak lee but it’s like saying no one in the history of the game, including the inventor, had never assembled these 5 cards together.
@@YugiohEverything If you think about it, they didn't want to scare little kids who watched the anime...hence why they changed it to being banished to the Shadow Realm
[Kaiba]: "No, exodia! no one has ever been able to summon him!"
[Yami Yugi]: "Because it's so hard?"
[Kaiba]: "No, because no one knows how to play this game."
~ YGO The Abridged Series
Iirc correctly then people besides Yugi's grandpa did not even have 5 pieces of Exodia and Pegasus would prob not even bother trying since he had his dead wife on mind, Kaiba probably was also not into this, since its not dragon lul
Tbh also other thing is I think that Yugi actually probably had more than 5 pieces, too, iirc he used one piece to defend himself 1 turn before he draw last one (also iirc then there was a mistake in anime and they shown that yugi had two of right arms in the duel against kaiba)
if it wasn't recorded to happen then how tf are they supposed to know it did happen at all
Sending you to the Shadow realm is just a fancy way of saying "Go to hell"

Skilled Magician ah go to the shadow realm
Yujo Friendship Bakura best Jojo confirmed?
I learned a long time ago that the Shadow Realm was created just for the dub, but I still love it. It's stupid, but I love it.
I agree! I actually dont mind that concept at all
It’s not stupid.
the shadow realm was an improvement. sending people to "hell" like in the manga is stupid.
The Shadow Realm doesn't lower the stakes for the characters, but it DOES create a disconnect from reality - the threat is real to the characters, but the Shadow Realm isn't real so the kids won't be scared of it happening to them).
u mean the purple realm
The biggest anime lie is that Brock likes jelly filled donuts

MatsuyoRific what did he say really then?
They were riceballs on screen from 4Kids being too darn lazy to at least draw a jelly donut over it

The weird thing about the Shadow Realm is that during the Battle City arc it actually improved the logic of the show, as sending the Pharaohs soul to the shadow realm was a much more realistic goal for Marik than killing the Pharaohs host body.
That's indeed a good point!
How so? They both have the same finality, and death is a much more real concept
@@xplorer2111 because killing Yugi would not get rid of the pharaoh, it would merely send his soul back to the millenium's puzzle until the next person was able to solve it
The biggest lie is vegeta casually referring kakorat as Goku

alexh4319 considering bardock is smarter then the average saiyan he might as well be.
The next dimension and HFIL
Quote321 In the Japanese version those were regular saws. Kinda fucked up if you think about it.
The shadow realm is THE SECOND BIGGEST LIE IN DUBBED ANIME HISTORY... Nothing beats a JELLY FILLED DONUT
ChibiExorcist Sorry, in the Yu-Gi-Oh ! Universe, the final revelation is that Dead will never come back... Except as ghosts
4Kids may have given us the biggest lie in anime history, but they also gave us a kickass theme for the show. And I'm okay with that.
#lolz
well you can use monster reborn
*_Y-y-y-yu Gi Oh_*
Yugioh GX and Pokemon
Yes I love theme too
The Shadow Realm/Stars/Nether Realm concept is way darker in my opinion. Kind of twisted to censor death and replace it with living in an evil dimension of darkness and nightmares for eternity. That would be horrifying. Cool... but horrifying.
That's like trying to make a meal less spicy by replacing regular peppers with ghost peppers
Yes and your body dies after a long time being comatosed. Its basically bad limbo.
evil dimension of darkness and nightmares for eternity.
that called Hell
Its like Kars in Jojo....yeah I'll just stick with death.
Sebastien-Loik Ntsangou-Kanda Little kids can't catch onto this though.
Not that the target audience, which consists of children, is the actual audience.
So when a duel was had in "the shadow realm" what actually happened in the original japanese dub? Were they dueling in actual hell?
I also want to know this
Yami no sekai, as has been mentioned.
Kostas1601 it was a shadow game. That's about it.
Hell, Yami no Sekai may not have even been meant as a real place. Pegasus just said Yugi's Grandpa was there, I'm sure being trapped in a card felt like being in a world of darkness.
A shadow game is played in the shadow realm. What else defines a shadow game? If there is no shadow realm then what is a shadow game?
I thought it was totally believable. That the Millennium items were objects created to allow mankind to access the powers of the shadow realm.
Word to the Wise: “If you have to heavily censor a show to make it watchable for kids; it wasn’t meant for kids.”
The biggest lie in anime was the Ghost Stories dub
And it was perfect
I love that show :D
Jeffar blogs
Yeah, if the shadow realm isn't real, what is all the purple stuff when Yami Marik duels? Is the Purple Realm real?
SILENCE!
I'm just saying
ShadowVincent3 honestly you're this close to being sent to the shadows

There was an arc where a character who died in the 4kids dub of One Piece during the Arlong arc was photoshopped into scenes to appear that they weren't dead for several episodes until they ceased to be mentioned further.
Antonio Lansang Bell-mere if I recall correctly
Who?..oh right ...man namis backstory is pretty shitty and well I gotta get back into one piece..its a series that seems meh at first but once you see the backstroke emotion and just everything it is so good..way more than your average kids show
Only watched the Sub so I had no idea they did that
How did they explain her surviving the fact that she was 100000 bugs short on money to give Arlong when he fist arrived at the island?
Without her proper, full backstory you can't really appreciate what she went through and why she's so awesome imo, what a waste :(
They need to have a Funimation redub of Yugioh
Almighty Loaf that would be godly
There was an attempt to redo it officially with the original cast, but it never went past the first episodes of Duelist Kingdom. It was more faithful, but it still kept residual dub items (Katsuya Jounouchi became Katsuya Joey). No real marketing and low sales doomed it. This was also late into the dub anime's airing, and by that time, it was too late.
an uncut yugioh would be great. Like when they redubbed One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Hunterxhunter and others in Funimation
Almighty Loaf but keeping the voice actors because Yami Yugi and Mariks voices were just mm 👌🏻👌🏻
I hate it how I've been lied to all these years after watching Yu-Gi-Oh!
I like the Shadow realm explanation more than the Japanese explanation. Think of all the times characters were sent to the shadow realm just to return. There is no return from death.
wes owen
I don’t think any shadow game really had death as the penalty.
@@TheEpic22
Actually yami bakura dies in the sub in his duel with Tami marik, marik explains that the power of ra is so strong that it will kill you, right before he nukes him to death
In the original manga plenty of characters die in the Yami No Games (shadow games). Mai wasn't killed she was trapped in her own mind while Malik's spell slowly killed her.

Jorge Rafael Sánchez guzmán WHAAAAAAAAAAT ?!
It is in the original, just not to the extent that it is in the dub. It's mentioned a few times during Yugi's first two duels against Kaiba (only the latter of which is seen in the anime that got dubbed), but it's never implied to give Yugi these "super draw powers" that it does in the US version.
GX DUB: "PREPARE TO BE SENT TO THE STARS!" In the original version: "PREPARE TO DIE!"
I always used to think it was just a fancy way of saying they were being sent to heaven
Hahah yes! GX upgraded from the shadow realm to the stars
Yujo Friendship dub is netherworld, sub is underworld
Imagine if they were actually sent to the stars either at the coldness of space and die suffocating or get burned in the stars' temperature
Well there was a comet in season 3 doing weird stuff. So maybe that is what they meant with sending to the stars.
Fun Fact:
In the Japanese version of GX, Titan is trapped in the "Yami no Sekai" which translates to "Dark World" or "Shadow World".

I swear if they make Go speak in third person like they did to Gongenzaka im going to be pissed
A meme made out of a lie
Edit:the only time the dub straight up changed the hole plot of an anime and was praised for doing so is in the case of «Ghost stories»
Yeah thats very true!
Samurai Pizza Cats is a great dub, even the creators of the anime prefer it over the original.
Greatsaiyakirby we are talking about yu-gi-oh here where having good dub is considered a utopic outcome
There is a huge variety of good dubs and in famous shows
Db
Yu yu hakushou
Fate(all)
Code geass and the list goes on
But they turned crap in something good
I mean, the original Voltron was technically a dub of GoLion and they changed it completely from the original (for the better, the original GoLion wasn’t very good).
What? You guys don't have the Shadow Realm in the future?
bandotaku probably cause all the millennium items where sealed or destroyed or something and thats the only u could play a shadow game
Oh, I was referencing YuGiOh Abridged: Bonds Beyond Time. Really hilarious, you should check it out.
I thought this was a kids show
hahahaha "I think he's talking about hell"
bandotaku at least we have the netherworld
Yeah dark games were definitely played in Season 0!
But tbh season 0 wast really a kids show that shit is way to dark
Tobias Pause they’re penalty games the same thing that happened in DM
The solution is simple: REDUBB YU-GI-OH!!!
Wouldn't be the first time that worked. The original dub of Dragon Ball Z glossed over death with a similar concept: "The Next Dimension". It was very poorly done too, so having Funimation redub the series made a huge and welcome difference.
you can watch the subtitled Yugioh in all its glory on crunchyroll
a redub would be awesome, but i doubt see 4kids ever giving up the license for the yu gi oh series. which is a shame since i know either viz or funi would treat it with utmost respect. unless someone at funi decides to addlib some * insert current issues here * bullshit
Phillip Bouille if it were to happen, guys like Yugi & Kaiba’s dubbed voices need to stick around. Their voices were really good.
Oh, and keep the dubbed soundtrack too
4Kids did try an uncut redub of Yugioh with the original cast once. But then legal issues popped up that kept them from dubbing past episode 9.
So everytime a character was send to the " shadow realm " and then it came back it means that caracter was killed then revived ? Wow so many times caracters can revive in yugioh
Imagine if they had shenlong haha
that makes the shadow realm thing less stupid now
yes and no , i can see ur point there , still no explanation on drastic changes
permanent deaths? You mean joey, mai, odion, bakura, marik and anime pegasus?
Yeah but those who didnt we got no explanation how some escaped the " shadow real " or dead , and some died
Nobody ever mentions how one of the most elaborate and twisted death games was entirely unaltered. The one of Yugi vs Joey at the peer with the anchor. The entire set-up is still there entirely unchanged including Tea's life being threatened.
The biggest question is: What if 4Kids entertainment never dubbed the Yu-Gi-Oh series
Chaos Galaxy then they wouldn’t be dubbing the series today
No shadow realm meme then.
@@Skipet_ and no kick ass yugioh theme song
In many cases I was ok with the shadow realm idea. The concept of being damned to hell by a villain sounded pretty extreme... the only times I thought it was dumb were touched on here. The saws, the rooftop duel etc. Sure, rip souls from bodies and make slave zombies of their bodies but don't kid around with falling 20 stories to your death.
Yeah I think the shadow realm definitely wasnt a horrible idea, I just thought they overused it if anything a little too much
A place where you suffer for all enternity yeah that totally less scary then dying 4kids
Good job 4Kids! xD
Kids are indoctrinated all the time to believe that there is such a place as Hell, where their flesh will burn for all eternity, so I think they can handle that definition
A place where you suffer for all eternity... so they show 4kids dubbed anime on loop?
Yu Yu Hakusho, Tokyo Mew Mew, One Piece, and Salior Moon we’re also heavily altered in their English dubs.
And so was Sailor Moon. That show got redubbed with no eps. cut and almost close to the orginal source thanks to Viz Media. Maybe Funimation would resume doing the uncut version of the YGO anime from years back and redubb Yu Yu Hakusho in the process.
I liked the yuyu hakusho dub though.
YuYu Hakusho has an uncut version fir enlgish dub tho too. I got all four seasons that way.
Ghawk You forgot Cardcaptor Sakura. The only thing similar to Cardcaptors is that it's about little kids collecting magical cards. Hell, the show was originally called Cardcaptor Sakura, yet the dub tried to make Li Showran (Syaoran Li) the main character.
what about shaman king
Sad thing is, 4Kids is still around today, just under a different name. (4K Media) They're still dubbing Yugioh too.
1dbad nooooooo
+Blue face What? Are you surprised or something? Can you think of any OTHER dubbing studio that could have made a dub that is bad as Arc V?
Ufukcan Gencoglu
I haven’t watched arc v
I only watched the first 4 seasons
1dbad ??????
Owned by Konami
It’s odd that they didn’t replace the Netherworld with the Shadow Realm in Yugioh 5Ds dub, since the shadow realm was already well established.
phonepup_mk8DX Agreed and it would have created a bigger connection to the previous 2 series
XD
its not the Shadow Realm... its the PURPLE REALM
The DREADED Purple Realm!!!
IGNORE ME!!!!!
just saying
Shut up before I throw you to the Shadows!
you mean... to the PURPLES...
Personally I like the concept of the shadow realm as it provides an origin story for the super natural cards.
HAHAHAHAHA that comment is amazing
To be fair, no one truly understand what that card does, not even the original creator.
Nappa: Vegeta what does the scouter say about Yu-Gi-Oh!'s censorship level
Vegeta: ITS OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another fun lie. It was originally 8,000
Hes tallking about the meme power levle
Que!? Ocho mil!? Es impossible!
This meme... it's so dead... Why would you say this?
I used the dragon balls to bring it back to life
Ok. The shadow realm not being real is the biggest lie of all anime. I agree
I just recently watched some of your videos! I enjoy the Pokemon content. Thanks for dropping by, and keep up the good work with your channel!
Verlisify no, it's jelly filled doughnuts.
Get outta here, ya furry boi
Verlis is not trash.
Verlis I didn't know you like Yugioh! That's awesome
Tbh the shadow realm was way worse because instead of dying their souls are trapped in the dark dimension to live forever
Usagi Tsukino
Konami owns 4kids (they bought it), and they are technically still doing the dub
didnt go completely out of business, they can be now known as 4K Media.
slayerr4365 they had some good music too
I think I agree with your assessment.
Lord Valzin they were in a coma after fighting Marik remember?
Yugioh Everything....actually Mai was imprisoned within her own mind by the Millennium Rod. Marik used the primary power of the Rod; mind control to torment Mai by making her face her greatest fears.
KAO S What's freaky AF is that in the English dub she's trapped in a hour glass that was slowly filling with sand as she watched her friends forget about her. In the Manga (and I can only assume the original Japanese) it wasn't sand, but flesh eating beetles. So yeah, that was some sick stuff.
When i was a kid i used to think going to the shadowrealm for eternity would be ALOT scarrier than just straight up dying!
Exactly, and IMO that is how every dub should be executed
Most store bought Naruto DVDs featured the TV edit which features less blood and swearing, but doesn't rid it entirely. The tone of some scenes and religious themed were also cut. This was also done by DBZ. But in both cases there were uncut dubs available for home purchase too. Yugioh And other 4kids series tried this but discontinued the uncut releases for unknown reasons
Wasn't Naruto also censored? Didn't Itachi just "abduct" the whole uchia clan, instead of killing them? I could be confusing it with the german dub though, which was heavily censored...
NorthRemembers oh yes , the german dub in naruto was really terrible xD
Naruto had two dubs back in the two. One that aired on Toonami that could met the standards of the PG rating on tv and the other for uncut home releases.
There are rumours that there's two Dragon Ball Super dubs right now. One for toonami/uncut home releases.
And the other for when they broadcast in syndication in a earlier time slot. So that means they use the H word for Mister Satan.
Isn’t a yami-no-game the Japanese version of the shadow realm?
The Shadow Games existed in the original but not the Shadow Realm
@@djcrimsonsunbird3607 Yes; Yami-no-game was the phrase for Shadow Games in the original. However, the punishment was often death or some slew of mind-bending stuff. Trapping people inside their own minds, making people hallucinate fully that they're on fire or that trash and leaves are cash and coins, that sort of thing. The punishments were often a fate worse than death, but they were much more concrete than the Shadow Realm.
Sorry Dylan but “I’ll send you to the stars” from GX is the biggest lie in anime ;) lol 4 Kids reached with that one
Dee X Jay No one likes GX though. Negated.
Could you elaborate on that? I don't remember much from GX but I did like it when it came out
Goodroosters yea sure when Judai or Jaiden and his friends went back for Jessie in other dimension losing duel means losing your life but 4Kids can’t have the characters saying that
+Dee X Jay
To be honest the whole send to the star stuff even as a kid sounded to me like there way of saying that there died (kinda like when you say someone is under the ground to say he is dead)
Ah, so it's like how people would be sent to "another dimension" in DBZ.
4kids did a hell of a job, making the story blend so much better, and making it seem like the shadow realm was from ancient Egypt
I think that the "It's over 9000!" Translation error in one of the Dragon Ball shows is on par with the Shadow Realm.
Yujo Friendship lol
It wasn't that impactful since Power levels became irrelevant two arcs later lmao.
It did creat powerleveltards tho
But thats not a lie.
Hahahaha, the BBT abridged was awesome!
Where does Zark live, and where does Yami send part of Kaiba's soul? Where was Mai's soul, with the hourglass?
It’s not called the “Shadow Realm” in the manga, it’s called the “World of Darkness”
"闇の世界 Yami no sekai" in Japanese. "影 Kage" would have been used since it translates to "shadow".
Shadows are synonymous with darkness so it still fits
When you think about it, the Shadow Realm is actually a lot more worse than death. To remain in never ending darkness and turmoil for all eternity. It kinda gives me shivers just by thinking about it.
Yeah honestly its a pretty f ed up concept lol
that's called hell my man and DM was based in Egyptian myth
it happens, in peoples mad dash to not tell kids they will die one day... they end up making something sound a hundred times worse. they forget the old saying "some things are worse than death" does apply.
You can’t hate the shadow realm.
lol I knew about the Shadow Realm being fake :D
Amine Bachir purple realm
me 2
A good amount of people do! But there are still thousands and thousands who don't know its a dub only concept! Heck I didnt know until a couple years ago
I kind of like it, it's worse than Death XD
It may be fake but it still interesting
The biggest lie is that Bardock was a scientist, but an average fighter.
It's really funny how 4kids tried to censor death by giving fallen opponents a fate that's worse than death
Exactly!!!
In the original there is this thing called "The World Darkness", which is similar to the Shadow Realm.
The shadow realm basically means that people get sent to hell, regardless of how good they are. If anything the shadow realm is more terrifying than just simple death. After all, the character weren't just dead, they were getting tortured in the afterlife.
Also I would guess that ghost stories dub can beat yugioh out.
Dylan, have you seen that one of Tyler sisters said yolo in the Arc-V anime
HAHA I heard I heard xD xD
The Wrestling Enthusiast I haven’t seen a lot of the English dub of Arc-V, so I really cannot comment on that
Oh my gosh really! 4K and their bullsh&@t man I just can't
Did she really said that...? *Insert Krusty Clown meme*
(Arc-V Jap= on the floor ; Arc-V Dub= Krusty)
Leave him alone! Its Already Dead!
It's not a theory for starters, and the answer is that he felt into a coma after being clinically dead.
4kids pulled a Kingdom Hearts when it come to the “ Shadow Realm” 😂😂😂
Props to anyone who gets that joke
You just changed my entire perspective on this show. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome DMT! Glad you learned something/enjoyed! :D
Who thinks Funimation should've dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh instead of 4Kids?
Here's the thing as the last brutal as it is when you think about it this shadow room idea was much more horrifying and scary than the original idea of death itself in a sense it was more a limbo of Torment vs just blatantly dying if you look at the original vs. Is Shawn around midea the original idea just seems like a final destination card game versus this seems much more horrifying falling into a portal of Abyss and darkness it just seems evil and scary and should actually have became Canon over time even though it was from poor kids yes but it was a pretty cool idea pretty cool concept the Japanese should have taking up over time in future installments even if it wasn't originally their idea it was still their characters if they wanted to steal the idea from 4Kids they could have done it a hundred percent and the company would have had nothing they could have done about it
Not after KickVic
Actually, I've watched the duel between Seto Kaiba and Yami Yugi in S0 and Yami does mention something that gave inspiration for the shadow realm. So while it doesn't exist in the Japanese, it does have a equally scary senonym
Ironically, the Shadow Realm sounds like a fate way worse than death.
At least the English voice actors was on point. 👌👌👌👌👌
The shadow realm is worse than death. It is where you suffer eternally not passing on.
