    Mind Sliver on its own is incredible at breaking concentration. Because the damage triggers a Constitution Saving throw on the target concentrating, they immediately are penalized by that 1d4 in order to maintain the concentration.

      True, but also in a decent amount of campaigns, from my experience, enemy casters tend to be disproportionately wizards, or at the very least, intelligent. Meaning the likelihood of getting off Mind Spike on an enemy caster isn't quite as likely as it would be on most other things.

      Sometimes you don't have room to become a dragon, if the enemy is a late game boss you want to cast a 9th levek spell at power word kill might not be usefull until they've fished out all they're damage already.
      In those cases where you still just want damage out of your ninth level spell blade of disaster will shine, with the added bonus of effectively not being able to his from it.

If I use metamagic for a quickened spell, then I can get two attacks AND a leveled spell! Plus, after casting a leveled spell Storm Sorcerers gain 10ft of flight with no chance fot Attacks of Opportunity. So I can fly in, wail on the target, cast a quickened spell for my bonus action, and fly out of melee range!

      @@darkusalpha5995 And that's the thing. They undervalued this spell by calling it Niche. Specially since they just got done saying that they loved that Tasha's came with a new small grouping of spells that work off intelligence saves and Psychic damage. Not just giving another resistance to the Bear Totem Barbarian or giving advantage to likely all of it's worst saves for a better chance of succeeding but Considering this spell is now a partial counter to those very kinds of spells and even the powers of several of the new subclasses that do psychic damage as part of their effects with certain concessions made to it such as being higher level than Tasha's Mind Whip for the same upcasting function and so affects fewer people at one time but also at the benefit that it lasts a lot longer so it can potentially protect from a lot more uses of the lower level spells. Making it Concentration almost becomes a requirement at that point to be able to overcome it with any consistency for anybody that can't actually try to dispel it.
      The only thing niche about it is the question of how often your going to be facing effectively psychic monsters or rival humanoids but that is really true for a lot of good spells that are slightly specific to certain enemy types such as things affecting undead or powers most useful in something like the underdark. One groups Niche is going to be another Groups Must Have.

      Depends on what your definition of useful is. You would have to build into the character a bit, but the right set of feats and class abilities could do a serious bit of damage since it is a ranged attack spell. Assassinate does work so in the right circumstances with a lvl 20 build in a party with someone with haste, and having action surge oneself, you can use your 3 highest level spell slots if you manage to stealth in correctly and just completely ignore the concentration affects by recasting 3 separate times. With the Assassinate ability that is a 8d12+8d12+7d12+7d12+7d12+7d12=x lightning damage which doesn't rely on a saving throw

It's been clarified now that the concerns over the change interacting with War Caster was unfounded. There's a sage advice video where JC clarifies that a spell's "target" is in the description, and not affected by the "range" of the spell. Hence, Booming Blade still works just fine with War Caster. Also, he clarifies that the language of Green-flame Blade makes the jumping damage of that spell optional, meaning a caster can choose not to activate it, and still have it work with War Caster as well.

Enemies can either give you turns of free damage which cumulatively is a major win and benefits from Empowered Metamagic. Or they can waste their action removing the effect saving your party a turn of pain.

      Yeah I agree. At 3rd level that’s 6d4, which is an average of 6 • 2,5 = 15 damage, of a type that’s not commonly resisted. A Lightning Bolt spell deals 8d6 damage, an average of 8 • 3,5 = 28 damage, of a type that’s pretty common.
      It would take 2 turns to do the same damage as a lightning bolt, and has the possibility of making the enemy waste actions removing it.
      What lightning bolt does have on caustic brew however is it’s longer ranger, and half damage on a successful saving throw. So overall I would say that this is a pretty good spell.

      While at 9th level you'd still have two E-Blasts with 1d8+1d6, but you'd get 3d8 with Spirit Shroud 'cause its damage jumps to 2d8 when cast at 5th level.

    I honestly really like the blade of disaster, it provides something that I honestly felt was missing from the 9th level damage spells, which is surgical precision, like there are certain situations where you want to deal some heavy damage but blowing up an entire city block with meteor swarm, or turning into a giant dragon aren't really a good option, like when you're in an enclosed space or trying to be quiet, and the fact that you get to make two attacks with it each turn with each attack getting a 15% crit chance(give yourself advantage on them somehow and your enemies are gonna be a bloody smear in seconds) and then it can pass through any barrier including things like resilient sphere and walls of force make this an amazing spell for certain situations

      I find it amusing that Blade of Disaster can pass through any barrier, but since it requires a melee spell attack roll, it can potentially be blocked by leather armor. 5th edition doesn't have touch AC or a touch attack, so armor always figures into an attack roll.

      I've been looking through these comments hoping to find someone disagreeing with them. I don't see how they could write it off so easily. High dmg aoe vs multi round single target dmg is not comparable, that's a role decision. I also feel like shapeshift looks much better than it is in reality. It may be that my view is tainted because I had the spell as a druid, and found out that it was a waste to use instead of foresight (which is better than everything); nevertheless, I think it is just too easy to get your concentration knocked out. First round as a dragon I was knocked out. You'd have to take war caster AND resilient con just to feel safe.

      @@Evanakascorpio10 exactly, is blade of the disaster the best 9th level spell? no of course not that will always be things like wish because of the versatility of it being used to recreate any other spell, or foresight because it is the games most powerful buff, but blade of disaster is still a good spell it fills a niche that was unfilled by this point, and after actually having seen it in play it is also a really fun spell for a high level wizard because it gives them the kind of multi-turn high output single target dpt slaughter that is normally reserved for fighters

    Something that one should remember about the new summoning spells: The "Summon Greater Demon" spell required you to keep your concentration on the spell or otherwise the summoned creature would turn hostile agianst your party. It could even happen without you taking damage, because the demon got to roll a charisma saving throw every turn. These new summon spells don't have that problem. The creatures disappear if you loose your concentration, but they don't become an actual problem for your party. Added to that, if you're playing a conjuration wizard, at 10th level you gain the ability, that your concentration on conjuration spells can't be broken by taking damage. So there you go, summon your trusty elementals, golems and fiends as much as you like. Perfectly save and a very effective way of using your concentration.
    I like to call these spells the "It's always sunny in philadelphia" summons.

    • @ATinyWaffle

      An uncontrolled summon greater demon does not turn hostile to your party. It "spends its turns pursuing and attacking the nearest non-demons to the best of its ability." This nearest non-demon should just be the enemy whose face the demon was already wailing on. It's god if the demon breaks free, that way you don't have to concentrate on the spell anymore and you still have a meat shield and dps for your team for 1d6 rounds which is plenty of time for it to get killed by the enemy before it would ever become a problem for your allies.

A bladesinger wizard with their dex and int into their armor class adding 2 more to their AC since they can't wield a shield makes them significantly tankier, couple that with a fly speed and they are a terror. The options on their own are not great, but together I think it's a must have for a melee caster

      right, plus most people get a lot of 1st level spells, so even if you choose it and its a bit of a flop, its not a huge deal. but yeah, consistent damage or taking up a creature's full action at early levels is actually pretty huge. Plus at low levels, 2d4 really isn't that bad (~9 damage)

In almost every boss fight, being able to drop the Blade of Disaster and then stand there and go to town on an enemy who just got held by Hold Monster? I don't know I've ever done anywhere near that much damage in one turn before as four crit eldritch blasts+two crits from Blade of Disaster for three turns! It was also used at one point when a mini boss tried to ambush my Warlock behind the party, and between knocking them back with eldritch blasts +blade of disaster tearing him apart was able to solo the mini boss before moving to help the party!

    tasha's caustic brew: as it stands, the closest competition to it is witch bolt, which gives a guaranteed 1d12 lightning if the first attack was a hit. But with this spell you can hit (realistically) 2-3 creatures most of the time. The damage output compared to other 1st level spells is huge , so when playing a level 1 or 2 character it is a very good spell actually. I get why you guys rate it as niche though, because once you get third level spells and a second attack on your cantrip the 1st level spells become fairly useless.

    Blade of disaster being a Bonus action is something that wasn’t discussed. I think it is the best at what it does, which is single target damage. Especially if you have Advantage. With advantage this spell does an expected 160 points of damage to a target, that will almost never be resisted, in just two rounds. Leaving you free to use your action to do any number of other wonderful things. Not insane for a 9th level spell but certainly respectable. I do think Monty has a point that damage likely isn’t what you want to be doing with your high level spells. But if it is? It’s this or Meteor Swarm, and I don’t think the choice is super obvious.

    • @greyskies9
      @greyskies9 3 года назад +1

      I fully agree with you. Meteor Swarm is an amazing spell, but it's a one-trick pony, and it is best against hordes of enemies - which is typically not what you're fighting in the endgame. Also there are definitely limitations, such as hitting allies or allied structures - and if your DM is stingy they might even impose sanctions when fighting in caverns, narrow spaces, etc. - I know that I would. And as you already pointed out, the Blade will most likely outdamage Meteor Swarm after two rounds against a single enemy. I think calling this 'bad' really doesn't do it justice.

  • @InvaderHelpUnit
    @InvaderHelpUnit 3 года назад +2

    Blade of Disaster would be amazing in the hands of a Conj Wiz. You mention Meteor Swarm or True Polymorphing into a dragon, both require space which could limit their uses. BoD can always be useable.

Given that addition, does that +2 AC improve the consideration at all since it's basically a free extra shield worth of AC? Or does this not stack with other +AC effects and so won't happen very often at this level?

    the "drama" about summoning spells is kinda bs. The onus on having the stats for what you conjure is on the player, its not that hard. You don't have the stats? then you can't summon it. The spells are are really clear about the challenge rating on what you summon and it encourages the player to actually look into what they want to summon.

    • @All4Tanuki

      @darienb1127 3 года назад +1

Even if they are weak, trust me, it won't matter. They are still going to DESTORY the encounter.

    A quick note about the Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade cantrips is that the range was updated to self in Tasha's. Meaning they can officially be used with reach weapons like glaives, halberds, whips, etc. to make an attack at 10 ft instead of the original 5 ft range from SCA. Most DMs ruled this anyways, but it's nice to see this made canon.

    I agree on your thoughts that Blade of disaster is a very niche spell, however as a DM I think I'd change the casting time of it to an action so that first turn you can get up to 4 attacks with it and then get those subsequent rounds with the bonus action while your still free to cast other spells. I think this alone makes it a lot better because if you can give yourself or an ally can give you adv on that first turn you can really fish for crits and make use of that extra crit damage.
