The view down onto Winnat's Pass and the channel 4 ident of the cement works off towards Bradwell makes it all worth the effort. I remember hike-a-bike up to the top of Mam Tor straight afterwards too - that less worth the effort lol
You are amazing and so inspiring! After watching this I set out a plan to get in the saddle more often and make riding a priority. I absolutely love these videos and the post ride commentary that you provide. I have gone back and watched all of your other climbs...they are just awesome. Thanks so much for bringing such great content and your personal perspective of your riding journeys. Love it!
I've been holidaying in the area and rode this on the same day as you (I actually rode it 3 times during the week as well as Winatts Pass earlier in the week). It's an awesome climb. Kudos on your effort as it's a tough climb.
Nice vid Katie. We live round Matlock and always call the climb Mam Nick and the hill top to your left Mam Tor. Mam Nick is I think the name of the summit of the road climb. If you headed uphill to your left from there you’d then be climbing Mam Tor, literally Mother Tor of the mini tors around it created by all the shale land slips. Nice to see I’m not the only one with a ‘dog nose’ when climbing.
Hi Katie Have you tried the lesser lane and cowlow lane out of combs in the high peak. Near chapel en le frith. It’s just that I’ve just watched your Winnats pass climb and you were looking for climbs.
Its in the 2nd hundred book. Simon always seemed to pick the steeper ones in his 1st book, or ones commonly used for hill climb events. This is way better than peaslows just down the road. I loved it.
Not sure if anyone has answered this below - but demystifying why your power ramps down when you hit a flatter section.....anyway the power equation has 2 inputs Torque and Angular Velocity (AV). Part of the AV input is RPM. So when you reach a flatter section your power will drop off because your torque drops off (the force you push with through the pedals). You are therefore undergeared for that flat section. If you pushed it into a harder gear, then your torque input would increase. However that can be a faff and undesirable sometimes. So if you don’t want to change gear and your power drops off because your torque input has tailed off, it is possible to increase the power by spinning your legs more. This can be difficult too with tired legs, but gets easier with practice. So when the climb flattens off and you can see your power dropping off and you don’t necessarily want to change gear, spin at a higher cadence say 100-110 RPM.
The Power equation if anyone is interested is Angular velocity is 2πRadians Radians can be converted into 2πRPM/minutes of angle (MoA) which the product of how fast your pedals travel round of the circle of your chain ring. So for cadence at 90 RPM = 2π90RPM/60MoA 2π90/60 = 9.42 Torque for this climb would be say, around 30-35Nm, let’s call that 32.5 eg 2π90(RPM)/60(MoA) x 32.5(Nm) = 306w So if you do the math - if your power drops off because your Torque drops because the climb flattens then increasing your RPM will also increases your power.
eg 2π100(RPM)/60(MoA) x 30(Nm) = 314Nm So if you decease the power through the pedals by 5Nm (quite a noticeable amount) but increase the cadence by 10 revolutions per minute (not that much) your power in this example increases by almost 10 watts. It’s easier to test this on the flat. Choose a gear, spin at 90RPM then drop down to an easier gear. Spin at 90 still then at 100....then at 110...you’ll get the idea.
I really enjoy your channel. I’ve been cycling seriously since 1986 and also like to climb. This particular video has convinced me to get a power meter for my Domane as well. I also recently purchased a Wahoo Elemt Roam and use it on every ride. I live in the States and am now I senior citizen so the Watts I make on rides may not be all that important but I’ll enjoy seeing them on the computer. Keep riding, being safe, and please continue your great videos. Consider me the 50,000 and 1 subscribers waving at you and encouraging you up the next climb. Take care and thank you for your hard work at cycling and the recording of same.
👋🏻 I’m waving right back at you Katie! I’ll let you know about the power meter and it’s use as soon as get it installed and take a few rides with it. Have a great next ride!🚴♂️
Great to see you do a hill near me (Sheffield)! Just dug out my power data for when I rode this about a year ago... my average was about 300w too. Unfortunately I weigh 80kg so I was somewhat slower than you were! My bottom gear of 30/25 (equal to 36/30) meant my average cadence was barely 70... think I need to gear down next time!
Good morning, good morning! Edale and the Peak ... a magical place on earth. Great memories of my time walking there. I’m off on another group ride tomorrow in rural south eastern Ontario ... rolling hills only for this bicycle newbie and I still won’t be touching no cows eh!
my area - lived around here all my life and going out virtually every day/night since lockdown I appreciat how lucky i am - mountain biking alternating with road biking
Excellent effort....👍👍👍 I used to fly gliders across the valley above Bakewell (a field called Camp hill) and can vouch for the beautiful scenery especially this time of year when the heather flowers and the hills turn purple.... Question did you forget the gloves or do you not wear any? 🤔
hahah...recovery day here after hitting it hard everyday here in August and August in Pennsylvania is no joke with heat and humidity...Keep pedaling!!!!
Fav peaks climb this, just sooooo beautiful and lovely to ride, all that swishing and swooping the bends, good quality surface after the edale rise aswell! awesome! Also, its not in the original '100 Greatest' book but its in Warrens regional climbs books under 'Mam Nick' in the Midlands book...just after Winnats I think.
Well done Katie another epic climb, don’t worry about blowing your nose and wiping on your Jersey , with them Efforts , keep up the good work 🚴♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Its defo Mam Nick. Too vid as always, its weird cos the bit before it gets to 17% up passed the sign and gate always feels like the steepest and most difficult part to me. You should do deliverance on Strines or the beast of Bradwell (a few miles down the road from castleton)
From my training days 40 years ago that climb is actually Mam Nick. Mam Tor is the road that had the landslide out of Castleton. The original Mam Tor climb was famous from the Tour of the Peaks many years ago. Both climbs were regularly on my training rides.
Hi Kay Kay, saw your recent activity of 0.3km on Strava, was hoping that you were going to a nearby grocery store. Wasn't expect this !!! 🤔👍👍. Go go go.....
Great effort Katie, I too don’t mind I bit of mist when out riding. You mention you run a 40 on your cassette for hills?, is that some kind of custom cassette. I ride a ribble R872 with ultegra, biggest cassette I’ve seen online for it is 11-34.
I use a mountain bike cassette on my 105 bike. You might need a wolf tooth roadlink if your derailleur isn't low/long enough. This article explains it all pretty well: road.cc/content/feature/how-get-ultra-low-gearing-gravel-bike-adventures-246424
I've been doing this regularly over this spring /summer, see plenty of cyclists walking up or stopping. As you are cycling up the view over the left shoulder is down Edale valley. It's amazing.
When you say that your power drops on the flat bits, it's only because you're in the same gear as the hilly bits. If you was to drop down a few gears your power would be the same, but then you wouldn't get the respite that those flat bits give you. It's normal for that to happen! Great climb though. Even though I live in Sheffield and frequent the peaks I've only gone up a handful of times. I'll have to revisit.
Great effort. That final hairpin is a killer. Ever considered doing Wessenden Head from Meltham? 3.2km @ 8%. Surprised you've not done it as it's the other side of Sky Road!
CR2032 batteries. I’ve recently put a new one in my Stages power meter, my Wahoo HR monitor, my Wahoo speed sensor and my Wahoo cadence meter (on a different bike). All the same and interchangeable. They all died on me over a two week period.
Haha…glad I’m not the only one blowing my nose and spitting my phlegm during my rides. 🤣 Amazing videos. Would love to see how you use your technology and put those videos together.
It’s in his second book btw. I prefer this climb to winnits as it’s more varied and has better views. I recently did pea royd in Sheffield which I’d say is almost as hard as winnits. Can you do a video of Riber? That’s the hardest I’ve managed
Awesome video again, Katie! Personally I don't mind, but my OCD wants me to let you know that it was acsolutely up the walls over the crooked camera angle... ;-)
Snot video, makes me smile 🙂, you are definitely not the only one. I've got less power than you (but about 20 more years), you said you are running 40 on the back, what have you got at the front? My lowest is 36/32

The Ribble looks great. And really strong climbing; great power. Shame about hr as I find this a really useful parameter to see (although it is very individual I know). Hilarious "snot issues"; happy its not just me. Totally agree about improving on the hills, by doing hills. If I don't do them regularly I get really bad "hill anxiety " that affects my breathing. Ha! I tried riding it on a fixie with a 42/22 gear. I'd worked out that if I could maintain 300 watts I should be able to stay above 60rpm. Great to see the climb, I lived in Edale for a while. I think Man Tor was the road from them Castleton side that collapsed and long time ago.

Believe me kook am in California and I still appreciate the beauty of your scenery that fog is simply beautiful. Jc
Ahh so glad Julio, how is the weather there now? I neeeeeed to get back out to California when we are allowed!
Katie Kookaburra just got done with a heat wave and getting ready for a other this weekend so me and the wife do mini rides. But it’s all good. Jc
Great job on that climb... several times I was thinking I would’ve tapped out here... there... then there... 😆 🙌🏽
Great video again cant believe your wkg! Do you tend to go up a gear or two when you stand or stay in the same gear?
Nice effort Katie. I love how you make climbing, i.e. suffering :), seem so fun!
how good are road tires from Michelin power competition, tubular

@@favnvs1 No, it attaches to the hanger and the derailleur attaches to the wolf tooth.
I didn't actually need one as I had a GS derailleur already.
Alan James cheers, thanks for the info 👍🏻
I'm doing this climb as part of a 40 mile mountain bike ride around the Peaks. Thank god i'm using an ebike 😂
Go baby go , were right behind you !
You earn respect .
Take out the alcohol and the athlete

Great effort KK.
Good effort! Nice and smooth on the pedals. Climbed it last night as the sun was setting, sheep all over the road going down Wynnats 🐑 😧
1 road I have ridden to Castleton :) good ride
Crazy numbers! Respect!
Well done Katie
Did this today, had to stop twice, but lovely views. Still not happy to defend although we did Winnatts downwards, but only at 13kph.
I've been doing this regularly over this spring /summer, see plenty of cyclists walking up or stopping. As you are cycling up the view over the left shoulder is down Edale valley. It's amazing.

At 13:00 and on, only another cyclist could understand why and how you do it. Brilliant climb and fantastic power! BZ!
I did it today. Just check the strava time and you well and truly beat me! Attempt #1

Proper tough.

Good effort, and shout out to the cameraman/woman/person.
Was it Willy Hands Dave? ;-)
How do you film all your hill climbs, motorcycles or a car ...or a very strong rider in front of you
Will do a video for sure
inspired, I am off to do that now next week. Awesome effort.
What kind of mic is that?
Would love to see how you film these, the camerawork is very good.
Have you thought about entering some hill climb events?
great effort! too bad on missing the heart rate data but if you had to have only one you had to go with power since you are a power girl!!
Shivering Mountain, named by the Romans. The road has been destroyed by landslips so many times the authorities gave up and re routed it.
Thought that was the A625 - the road from Edale to Mam Tor still very much in daily use.
