Who's your favorite Hazbin Hotel character and why?
husk!! we've gotten to see some glimpses of his past, but I find him as a compelling character that has great/intruiging chemistry with angel and alastor.

You just indirectly answered the answer “who is this show for? Who is its audience?” It’s for every adult/young adult that loves animation but feels like the medium has left them behind because animation as a medium is beautiful and can potently evoke any emotion but it has been confined to sanitized children media for a while now because they believe there isn’t an audience for it but there is
For me the fact kids watch it isn’t a problem but it’s suck that for people if kids watch something that mean this thing is bad and generally the « kids » are teenagers and some teenagers that are as mature than most of adults
As an adult that loves a great animated series, I disagree fervently. I don't like this show at all and think the writing in it is some of the worst, most embarrassing I've ever seen. You don't speak for me.

@@Mandus_The_Mad The constant tonal whiplash, where things are played as serious only to be made fodder for jokes, and the typical Reddit atheist take on Christian theology, for starters. But mostly, it's the juvenile fascination with painfully unfunny sex jokes and incessant swearing. The obvious comparison is to a show like South Park, but I prefer to contrast it with another show known for its liberal use of profanity, Trailer Park Boys. Notably, the first 7 seasons, when the creator Mike Clattenburg was the head writer. While there was a ton of dirty humor and constant swearing (some of it even part of the plot, like Ricky's insistence on needing to be able to swear to defend himself in court), there was also a key element that is absent in Vivziepop's writing: actual wit. The laughs came as much from the ridiculous scenarios the characters found or put themselves in and how their actions/reactions only made things even more out of control. People wouldn't key in on the profanity and crude humor of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss so much if they were in service to actual humorous jokes and situations.
i think the show is more for teens or young adults at the age of 16- to 22 years
Ur point about Hazbin “welcoming back” an audience that has been left behind by kids animation is why I believe Hazbin is so popular with teenagers (demographic often left behind by media bcus they exist in the awkward middle ground between childhood and adulthood that tv notoriously has trouble pandering too)
These gap years are often filled with anime, because the stories have more middle ground in the levels of maturity within its storytelling. I've said this exact idea to people many times. Glad to see someone else with a similar thesis.
Much to the chagrin and reluctance of elder, adult fans lol I wont harass the minors who do sneakily watch it behind parental backs, but it should at least definitely be watched with guidance to have healthy discussions after its darker moments
@@artisticbeautybyhanako6801 being a teenager way too young for watching horror and sexually explicit content and doing it anyways is a universal experience. I'd say it's actually part of learning how to engage with different complex topics without guidance. All "guidance" should have already happened by that point. And let's be honest, most of the time it didn't.

Since the pandemic,I’ve been exposed to all kinds of stuffs from the internet.I also live without my parents for who knows how long. Schrodinger’s Alastor: while not observed Alastor will be in a supermoralitycircle state. He’s an outright evil sadist and just some dude who likes helping, once observed, he will take one of the two states.
However like The Dark spot in the light, it is always in service of ego. Even in his attempts to seem altruistic this is usually only in:
A.) When he wants control/is in control of a situation
B.) When he feels that he can properly “square up” to whatever opposition lays ahead

That actually sounds so cute. Someday one of my siblings is gonna have kids, and eventually they're gonna be adults, and I will still call them niblings no matter how much it makes them seem like tiny children specifically because it will bother them.
It is a fascinating showcase of why I like Hazbin Hotel more than so many other stories that try to go "what if this childlike, innocent thing was filled with gore?" It's not just fairy tale + violence, it's asking how would those same messages of hope and morality interact with a darker reality. Characters have flaws a lessons to learn, but those lessons aren't going to be as easy or simple as heaven = good, hell = bad, and Charlie is a great example of a character who both has to learn that life is not innocent but she should still be motivated by those innocent ideals to make the world around her better.
It's funny comparing Charlie with Alastor, who doesn't believe in the power of friendship or the aim of her hotel, but ends up struggling in the finale where others (e.g. Angel Dust) don't because he refuses to rely on other people and accept the ideals of change and support. It's like the way he's established himself as the Radio Demon, never changing since the popularity of radio shows in the 1920s..

Another great example of this is 'Don't hug me I'm scared' (Puppet TV plus horror) and found footage / amalogue horror like 'Blair Witch Project' and 'Greylock' (mixing the comfiness or nostalgia of old footage with horror)

and everyone else in heaven had no idea (other than the archangel), but even then
there are angels like Emily who fundamentally understand how wrong it is to punish hell further once they do find out
it creates this dynamic within the very group of heaven that should be "perfect" and "unified" and shatters it into these 2 distinct sides
showing that angels aren't all bad and ppl not watching the show assumed that demons would only be the good ones

""It's welcoming you back" is such a perfect way to encapsule how I feel about Hazbin Hotel. I rewatched it so many times at this point and could never put my finger on why. This is why. It brings me back to the hopeful world of my childhood I got ripped out of.
This video helped me see why I appreciated Hazbin as much as I did. As flawed of a show as it is, theres always been so many aspects of it that kept me invested and excited to see what would come out of it, and has helped me get mlre insight on how to approach my own story

@@schnee1 I used to be of the school of thought that flaws and strengths in a story kinda cancel each other out, and that the best story is the one that does the most things well with the fewest weak spots. It really wasn't until I watched Evangelion for the first time, a show that has some stuff I find very repulsive in it right alongside some things that I think are absolutely phenomenal, and found that it did not average out into a show I thought was just ok, but instead into a show that could elicit passionate praise and passionate condemnation from me, that I began to realize that it's more important to do some things well enough that they really make an impression than it is to get flying colors in every way that matters. People call Harbin Hotel super flawed, and it is, but the immense popularity comes from somewhere, and I think you've hit the nail on the head describing something it is doing so well that its fans don't care what other issues there may be. Definitely worth analyzing.
I love that you gave this show praise. Just because it’s flawed, that doesn’t invalidate it’s incredible strengths! There are a lot of things to learn and appreciate in flawed projects!
yeah i was in the same boat until i discovered one piece, which has what i would probably still consider absolutely fatal flaws in some really major aspects but is still my favorite story of all time

I wasn't expecting this video, bc I see schnee mostly talking about flawless tv shows and as much as I love Hazbin, it's... not flawless, let's put it like that. However that was still something about this show that just makes me love it and I can't express how glad I am that someone who understands what they are talking about is finally putting my feelings into words. And who's better for this than my favorite youtuber?
I think the only serious flaw is the pacing which is not the authors fault but hbo’s
Im glad Hazbin is getting positive attention for something different than whats already been said. People either praise Hazbin for the music or the characters or the art style or gets torn to shreds for the humor or the pacing or the way it handles sensitive topics. But seeing someone dissect an aspect of Hazbin that hardly anyone has talked about is really refreshing!
Love Lufficer. Just his pathetic but kind heartedness is so endearing. Especially when he finally comes around to support or comfort Charlie after “More than anything” & in the Finale song he picks her up and helps her continue with her dream.
Three major examples by Disney worth looking at: "Treasure Planet" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" for a steampunk story and aesthetic, and "The Haunted Mansion" ride for a story and experience that balances "grim" and "dark" with "funny" and whimsical". Disney spent years trying to find the right balance between "grim" and "funny", resulting in a fantastic ride.
I did think really really hard about how cool it would be for schnee to like Hazbin and talk about it.
So maybe i manifested it idk
Also Charlie is my favorite character ! I find her hopes and dreams incredibly compelling, and i think she has a really strong sense of self and of her values, that allows her to be relentless in her compassion and benevolence. She truly, 100% sincerely, loves her people, and wants to save them. I love her. I realised all this for the first time during "It starts with sorry".

Rare to find a video essay that isn’t raving about how Hazbin Hotel sucks. I really appreciate it, I’m tired of seeing all the criticism.
Ever since the pilot there’s just something that has kept me obsessed with the show. Maybe it’s the mystery of what’s next, or maybe it’s because it’s in hell. In a weird way, I guess it’s comforting that you’re at rock bottom.

variety is the spice of life! adult animation hits as a deeply satisfying connection to animation we don't often get anymore, let alone adding debauchery or modernity to it.
I understand it's flawed but I really think it's such a fun and enjoyable show with so much love put into it that I can't bring myself to hate it. I love this show
This video is not only a great deconstruction as to what makes Hazbin, Hazbin. But it also provides a lot of inspiration and insight in how to create a world for your own stories, which is something I always love about your channel. It’s as much of a learning opportunity as it is a video essay
i enjoyed hazbin hotel and it saddens me that so many people have such shallow criticisms of it regarding tone. thank you for taking time to analyze this indie project despite it having a different taste from the shows you typically analyze. i love the term "grimsical". i also like the yin and yang approach you took to analyzing the show. hazbin hotel does a great job at using mythology to set up a system, only to break it with characters and concepts that completely contradict it. the grimsical tone is warranted through the themes that the show presents regarding morality and ethics. the good place is another show with the same themes, but the tone is less "grimsical" and more weird. i think this is because the good place is tackling the themes of morality and ethics from a more logical position than an emotional one. i also think that one being a cartoon and the other live supports their individual tonal approaches to theme.
It takes a pre-established mythology, and puts a little bit of each inside the other. Put both sides on the same spectrum, and you just have the reality of the human experience all over again.
honestly the way hazbin embraces the weirdness of being a human is my favourite thing about the show. and you really put it into words how exactly it attracts so many people in.
i really don't like it when people frown upon young people being edgy and emo because like. they're experiencing life with its wars, drugs, sex, abuse and everything else and NOBODY is telling them that it's ok. it's just the way world is. and it's ok because it's not just you - many people are like you. many other people are gay, many other people are in an abusive relationship, many people are struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. you're not alone.
hazbin accepts you and embraces you. that's why i appreciate it so much. hazbin is the quintessence of being a weird edgy emo human in a big scary world and trying to find the whimsy in it.

As somebody who absolutely loved the season, the story, the characters and tone, I am kinda tired of hearing bits of twitter drama, instead of an actual analysis and/or review. Don’t get me wrong I am open to criticism of the show and to those particular arguments too. But this analysis that is very focused on writing is what I genuinely want more of.
What I've noticed about most of the "criticisms" (at least from what I saw) is that people are mainly using it to justify not liking this show/ its creators.. Like, you can like a show and still recognize its flaws. You can also hate a show, recognize its flaws, but still respect the creators and fanbase behind it. Because literally not a single show/movie/book EVER is flawless.
But it feels like, when people criticize most shows, they actually give constructive criticism. But when they criticize Hazbin/Helluva Boss, they do it as if to prove a point?? Like, as if to tell the fanbase: "Hey, look at all these flaws your favorite show has! This is why you should also hate it or be ashamed of liking it!"

Hazbin may not be perfect, but it truly is something special.
Most unique version of Heaven and Hell I've ever seen
It's very raw. The songs are the most polished part of the show but there was like too much plot in these 8 episodes. For me, the story was really strong but the pacing was too fast. That's why I'm soooo excited for season 2. It they can fix the pacing, the show will be one of the best. It's already filled with so much love and devotion, it just needs some more polish❤

Your video style is super important these. Its super easy to find the things that are wrong with a show, but being able to figure out why it works and how to formulate those things to be more broad is amazing! If you get the chance, I've been thinking about Murder Drones and how to make a video on its excellent use of setups and payoffs. It feels like every thin that happens in thst show already happened on a smaller scale earlier in the episode. It makes me wonder if creating a show from end to beginning could be a valid and worthwile way to create those payoffs and then fill in the rest of your story with setups
Super easy to find one-two default but it doesn’t has more than:pacing and maybe crude humor(for some people only so not even a real default but just question of opinion)and the pacing is not hazbin fault but Amazon fault

i think another thing that has really made hazbin explode is the grimness of our world? hazbin empowers us to be the whimsy in our reality, in the midst of the dark, and make the world a slightly better place that way.
This is such a nice review, I personally love Hazbin and didn't expect to fall in love with its world building and characters so much when I first saw it. So thank you for this because it expressed my thoughts perfectly.
I literally got into both Hazbin and Helluva three days ago, this is godsend after seeing how much hate it's received from video essayists
What I love about this show is that despite all its flaws it is jam packed with SO much personality. More than almost any other piece of media Ive ever seen. It feels so alive and vibrant, everything from the character designs to the voice acting and personalities... its so refreshing to see
You really hit the nail on the head with 'my favorite thing doesn't want me anymore'. Its even worse when that Thing is a multi-part franchise, where you _were_ once the target audience... but you grew faster than the franchise could keep up with, and now its trying to preach lessons about 'growing up' that are a decade too late. We've already experienced all this, now it just feels patronizing, especially with the glut of films in the last few years where they split up the main cast for a cheap tug at the heartstrings. Yes, we the previous-target-audience _know_ friends can drift apart, and the secret is: its not deep, its not meaningful, its not 'bittersweet', it fucking _sucks._ And maybe a franchise where friends _can_ stick together is the story we actually wanted to see, not 'All the magic goes away forever F*** you, its time to be an Adult(tm)'.
Fun fact: Alastor was actually one of the first characters that Vivziepop ever created. He and Mimzie are holdovers from Zoophobia, Viv’s old webcomic.

It’s such a breath of fresh air to see an overall positive review of this show. Hazbin gets way to much hate and it feels like people heavily exaggerate the flaws or just use their own opinions to justify that hate. I’ve even seen popular RUclipsrs fall in this category as well.
They should really talk about both the good things and the bad things, the reason why the show sounds bad because people only talk about the flaws, not the good stuff.
@@Ma1hematics2013 It honestly sucks that this is the case. The current climate of social media (from what I’ve seen) feeds off either extreme of the argument, so it’s almost impossible to find a genuine review of pretty much anything. Sadly for Hazbin, it gets a huge amount of unwarranted hate and criticism. Some of it is justified, but I wholeheartedly believe that the goods outweigh the flaws of this show.

It really feels like Viv listened to the criticisms that Helluva got in terms of its inability to handle quick tonal shifts well, and implemented those in Hazbin. I think this is mostly thanks to Alastor; he's such a mysterious character that all of his plays keep you questioning. Alastor can go from threatening your very soul in one second and then being cheerful the next. And it helps balance out Charlie's overflowing positive nature.

Speaking as someone who loves your videos and generally enjoyed Hazbin Hotel:
I'm not sure if I really vibe with the idea that "dark + whimsical" is enough for a "tone", like I don't know if that's the right word. Any show can include dark or light subjects and portray them in any which way, and many do, but tone depends on how the subjects are handled, doesn't it? Perhaps I misunderstood this point.
I certainly enjoy combinations like that, the "grimsical" as you put it, but I feel like the way you described these combinations, especially when including stuff like "good+neutral" and "bad+neutral", it kind of gets too broad and just covers any possible character? I don't know if I understand the point of highlighting that either. ^^;
I did, however, adore your third point about how shows like Hazbin Hotel appeal to people who feel like their favorite childhood shows have abandoned them. I've never thought about it that way, but "my favorite thing doesn't want me anymore" really speaks to me.

Thank you for encapsulating why I love this show so much. The nuanced grey of the characters and story, and how it just accepts itself As It Is is part of why I like it so much. It's contradictory, it's messy, and yet it still loves exusting. (Loser Baby is amazing for this reason)

This analysis is super interesting, I've been thinking a lot about the idea of stories based on aesthetics, but I never got to thinking too deeply about it. I kind of brushed it off as being something that you could probably pull off with small little animation snippets.
So seeing you go into way more depth with this idea and using this show as an example, even if I haven't watched it yet, was super interesting and helpful!
There absolutely is something so strong about pairing childhood/nostalgia things with adult themes that makes it very satisfying if done right. Or perhaps not done right, but done to your personal liking. Because it can also be off putting. I really want to think about that in more depth.
I kind of wish you were into Homestuck because I would love to hear your take on such a huge, convoluted and crazy story that managed to charm and resonate with such a huge range of people.
Slightly related, something I think about a lot is how some stories manage to "fuel" fandoms better than others. Some stories have the perfect ingredients to turn them into playgrounds for their fans. Interesting worlds, rules, systems, characters, teams/sides. Leaving enough room for theories, analysis, fanworks, and my favorite: leaving fans wanting to make in-world characters to explore these worlds and dynamics with.
Makes me think of Spiderverse, AvatarTLA, Steven Universe, Homestuck, and going more classic stuff like Harry Potter, StarWars, StarTrek, LoTR of course... There's SO MANY stories that fit this description but it's still such a fascinating aspect of stories and their interaction with fandom.

The thing you mentioned about why Steampunk works, the rigid Victorian culture vs the limitless potential of the new technology of the era, I think I tapped into that without realizing it when I tried writing a steampunk story myself. I thought it would be cool to combine steampunk aesthetics with Greek mythology and tried writing a story about a demigod daughter of Thanatos acting as a hit man for her father, sending reincarnated villains from Greek mythology back to Tartarus, but eventually I started writing a story about a city locked behind a wall, a repressive society trying to protect itself from demigods, while the Gods who spawn these children don’t pay any mind to these arbitrary lines drawn by puny humans, and the main characters gathering demigods together to come out of hiding and change society’s perception of them
When first watching the pilot episode on RUclips, I thought it was awesome. But the story they went with in the end when it came to Netflix, just didn't hit for me, and I'm struggling to understand why.
In the pilot, it seemed Charlie's Hotel was meant to show that redemption was possible, to rebel against the idea that once you're in your place that's it, and that you can in fact make it to heaven with enough effort. But the show ended up just being what just felt like "Heaven actual bad guys hehe", and I think that was, for me at least, too shallow an idea that I couldn't get over that choice?
Like, Rebelling against the Common idea in Hell that Redemption is impossible, go through the effort to prove them wrong, arrive at the pearly gates in the last episode to have Heaven themselves, be literal gatekeepers and setup for season 2, wherein the crew have to meet higher and higher goals in order to finally get in, only again to find that Heaven isn't so different and they don't want them in, leading to having to try and fight there way in, by which point, everyone in hell has been made aware that "Hey you've been lied to your whole afterlife", bingo bango season 3.
I don't know, something doesn't sit right, maybe just a longing for something...more? Something else? What could've been?? Who knows. Very creative non-the-less! Animation was great regardless of story.
Unrelated note, I'm not religious and just thinking about the logistics of world where all souls, old and new go to after death, hurts my brain. Even if the requirements to heaven are super stringent, that's still A LOT OF SOULS. Just 0.01% of ALL humans EVER, its still a 1 Billion People. How big is Heaven? Is Heaven as big as Hell? Does Heaven conduct purges too? What if there other Sapient animals too, do they go to Hell/Heaven? Elephants show signs of a higher intelligence, same as dolphins? Do ALL elephant souls add to the list? What about Aliens? Or Dinosaurs? If it is just Human souls, what if in the future, a Human-Alien halfbreed, would they get to go? Very intriguing, but a slippery slope for sure, anyway. Thanks for reading. bye?

I think indie stuff fascinates us in that being more limited it stimulates our imagination of what could be, what is really into this creator's head that is so queer etc. The pilot stewing away into people's heads for a while and then having such short season may have been a recepit for underdelivering to some i guess

Aeronauts!!! I loved this movie when it came out! But no one else seemed to like it at all. It’s super cool to hear your take on it, how it is a great example of steampunk’s central themes. Which made me realize why it resonated with me so much: I love steampunk! I just didn’t consider that at the time because it’s also historical fiction like you said.
I’m also fascinated by stories that take place in a confined setting and focus mainly on the characters and how they each respond to the situation. It distills a character-driven story down to its essential elements. The two main characters in Aeronauts spend the majority of the movie in the tiny basket of a hot air balloon, and it works!!

What you said in the end about going back to watch your childhood shows but not feeling invited anymore resonates a lot with me, and I think you’re definitely not alone. It reminded me of this experience I had at a medieval fair where I bought some apple mead (mead as in honey-ish alcohol, it’s great) and was told that it tastes like grandmas homemade apple juice USED to taste like, when you were a kid. Even though it’s the same beverage, it doesn’t taste the same because the receiver has changed. But adding that honey and 6% alcohol in it makes that taste as amazing for adults, as the nostalgic taste was as a child

Once you said it, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Yes the cartoons and media we grew up with did leave us, and we are no longer welcome. But also when I was a kid, there was just too much I didn't like about the sanitized and ruled over world of animation that continued to persist from childhood to tween to teen to young adult. It was why I found a certain comfort in animated media like anime. It was my favorite type of media, being animation, being used to tell less sanitized stories that really made me connect.
I cannot tell you what a paradigm shift it was to go from watching Ben 10, to watching Naruto. Fun semi-sanitized cartoon that ended up as always pretty lighthearted, with very little fear of the hero saving the day, to (at the time) watching the Chunin exams and the forest of death, where people died, were cursed, hurt etc. What I mean to say, is that going from something cartoony with little stakes, to something with real stakes, characters lives literally on the line, and blood being shown. As a kid I couldn't get enough, it felt like I wasn't being treated like a kid anymore and I loved it.
Now as an adult I need more animation to bring back that feeling of not treating me like a child anytime I try to enjoy it. Obviously there's stuff like Invincible, but I want the more cartoony style like Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.

This makes so much sense as someone who’s been obsessed with Hazbin Hotel (and by extension Helluva Boss) ever since discovering it back in 2019. Some of my all time favorite movies have been dark fantasy kids movies (especially from the 80s) like The Dark Crystal, Return To Oz, The Neverending Story and Labyrinth as well as Tim Burton and 80s era Don Bluth. Even in middle school the stop motion James and the Giant Peach movie got me interested in Roald Dahl’s books which are often twisted and dark even though for kids. I’m still a big fan of Disney animation (especially the 2D animation classics from old school and Disney renaissance). I really like the stylized art of Vivziepop as it reminds me of the cartoons from my childhood and teen years in the 80s and 90s like Looney Tunes, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Disney Afternoon, etc. I still have a bit of childlike wonder and am drawn to the whimsical and fantastical. However, I also have a longing for the dark and more sophisticated. Ever since my teen years I was also into anime, furries and gothic aesthetics. I also really like irreverence and going against the grain when it comes to religion and what society considers “normal”. I’ve always been someone who love monsters, demons and all manner of creatures. Hazbin Hotel really encapsulates all those things I love and more. I like this! You've got a new subscriber.

I think this finally helped me understand why I like Vaggie so much despite how unpopular she seems to be with the fandom. She's that bit of normalcy that points out how absurd everything around her is. It's like she doesn't belong in that world (wink wink) and that makes her clash wonderfully with characters like Angel and Alastor. Plus I love cute gays :)
My bigest gripe with Hazbin is the pace. Is till love the show byt that could have been better.
