Serkis needs an Oscar all his own, for turning CGI characters into real characters, and basically writing the book on how to do it: Gollum, Caesar, king Kong...
Re: your comment about the soldiers asking themselves "are we the baddies?" - my favorite thing about this movie is the fact that the solider that Caesar spares at the start (and who ends up killing him with a crossbow in the end) spends the ENTIRE movie with an expression on his face like he's asking himself that EXACT question. Every scene he's in, every closeup we see, it looks like he's having a massive internal debate about the morality of his actions, and whether or not he should help the apes. And I spent the whole movie waiting for the moment that he finally reaches his tipping point and helps out. And what makes it my favorite detail is the fact that, ultimately, he NEVER listens to his conscience, he NEVER does a single thing to help the apes - he ignores his feelings at every turn, and chooses to be a good solider right up til the moment he dies from a grenade. And it's such a powerful illustration of a crucial truth: that having a conscience, and empathy, and "feeling bad about your actions" ultimately means NOTHING if you never choose to act on those feelings. It doesn't matter how good of a person you are "deep down" if your actions are still hurtful and bad. This character (for all his moral qualms) lived like a grunt and died like a grunt, because he chose to never act on his own better nature.
there's so much more to it than that what the hell does even good/evil mean if it's about the survival of your species or civilization it's an entirely arbitrary morality and one could argue that most actions in this film are merely the struggle of life

Notice how throughout the whole trilogy, Caesars speech has improved so much over time. Like his grammar evolved, as well as the other apes sign language evolved. It was a nice attention to detail.
In many way, the story of Caesar mirrors that of Moses. And when you consider that Moses was not able to enter the promised land, this ending makes perfect sense.
Someone else finally mentions this! This film is clearly deliberately structured around the Book of Exodus. The prison camp (500 years of slavery), the avalanche (drowning Egypt's army in the Red Sea), and as you mentioned, seeing the promised land but never reaching it. Maurice the orangutan is also a clear parallel with Aaron, the supreme Levite priest who advises Moses.
I forgot if you guys have seen the original, but in that one the humans can’t speak, as explained by the virus in this movie. And the ‘love interest’ in the original is named Nova, so I guess we’re to assume the girl in this grows up to be that character.
Andy Serkis (Gollum) and his involvement in the Apes films has been instrumental in the advancement of the CGI. Adding the fur etc is only part of the end result, Serkis' own movements being captured are the other ingredient. He is the master of this type of cinematography and his credits are a testament to this.
Such an amazing trilogy, I'm glad you got to finish it, even if it didn't get the views you wanted for it (or that it frankly deserves). @@paulonius42because this movie is the beginning of the planet being run by apes.........or dawn of the planet of the apes..........you even explained it yourself
Ceasar dying where he did is a Biblical reference to Moses. He leads the Israelites out of Egypt and captivity to the promised land but dies in sight of it, never actually entering. It's punishment for Moses losing his faith and briefly turning to idolatry. The parallel here is Ceasar turning to Koba's wrath, even though he eventually restrained himself. You see this imagery used in a lot of movies and TV series where a heroic leader stumbles while leading his people free. I'd name them but don't want to risk giving spoilers. =)
When Rocket revealed himself to the soldiers, I honestly thought the Colonel would excicute him, but not before Rocket would speak for the first time and shout, "APES TOGETHER STRONG!"

Matt Reeves 2 Planet of the Apes installments are incredible, and the first was great as well. Not only is the CGI and overall VFX incredible, the shot composition is amazing. There are some beautiful shots in these movies. The story is also really emotional and the character arc of Caesar is amazing.
This whole trilogy is astonishingly great. The fx are insanely good as is Andy Serkis performance as Caesar. This one concludes Ceasar's story with the next one being the start of something new I guess. But it has a heck of a lot to live up to.
The movie parallels the Exodus story fairly well. Ceaser like Moses was aloud to see the promised land but denied entry for losing his way. Being the leader the standards for him was much higher.

I've heard people draw comparisons between Caesar and the biblical Moses, who both led their people to the Promised Land but did not enter it themselves. Caesar truly cared for his "people". There should be a new Oscar category for actors like Andy Serkis. His work as Caesar is amazing and people don't realize how much of Caesar's actions is performance-based. Kudos to him for his work as Gollum and Caesar. Great stuff.
36:47 I think they didn't know if they were going to continue after this. This was an improbable franchise from the start, considering that these are still technically prequels. This is quite possibly the best movie trilogy of all time. It's shocking considering it survived a change in director (Matt Reeves didn't do Rise), to say nothing of being prequels to a movie series that peaked in the '60s. And FAITHFUL prequels too!
I was beginning to think that I’d missed this reaction and it had vanished from the channel or something! So glad that you guys have completed what is possibly the best (and most surprising) movie trilogy in a long time, and that you’ve finally experienced Bad Ape! I don’t know what I think about there being a fourth one, given how this felt like a fitting end to the series, but hey, the films all made a profit and it might be good. I’ll withhold judgement until random people on the internet who probably haven’t seen it yet tell me it’s crap 😉 And for the ending to this one… as soon as it was clear that Caesar was leading the apes to the promised land, I knew what would happen. If I say any more, though, it’d be a spoiler for The Ten Commandments!
Most believable CGI characters I've ever seen. The cgi blends nicely into the movie rather then overwhelming it at the expense of the characters, writing/storyline. Thank goodness this Franchise (isn't) directed by Michael Bay. Otherwise these movies would be all explotions and zero substance.
At the beginning of dawn during the intro with the news broadcasts it says immunity to the ape flu is around 1 in 500 Which with a population of around 7 billion would be around 0.2% of the human population would be about 1.4 million surviving.
"Apes together strong" symbolizes 'fascio littorio', a bound bundle of wooden rods, sometimes including an axe (occasionally two axes) with its blade emerging. The fasces is an Italian symbol that had its origin in the Etruscan civilization and was passed on to ancient Rome, where it symbolized a Roman king's power to punish his subject. It's also the origin of fascism, and Planet of the Apes describes fascism even more accurately as its more ancient meaning: A strong state that is bound by blood.
In the first movie of this trology (rise of planet of the apes), the news mention a space launch. Then later on they say the astronaut has gone missing. That astronaut is who the original 1968 Planet of the apes is based on. Nova is the name of someone the astronaut meets.
The newest one is confusing, some places I saw it say it was following Cornelius but the official trailer description said it was set decades after this, unless its another ape named Cornelius much later on. And there's also the question of how it ties into the originals with Nova and Cornelius being characters there, unless they are just names that get passed down
What a huge treat that this came up, especially after your report on the first two! So glad you guys got to experience this, it’s such an epic capping of the trilogy! I think we’re all curious about the 4th movie and wondering if it’s gonna hold up to the others or not. The trailer looked intriguing but it’s hard to judge a movie by it’s trailer. I hope they do it justice.
I always had the idea that the story of Ceasar is identical to the biblical story of Moses. He is the slave who was raised by the oppressors. As he grows up, he realizes that the slaves are his people and decides to help them. He frees them and they set their laws (in this case "Ape does not kill ape" and "Apes together strong"). And in the end he commits a sin that prohibits him from entering the promised land for his people, dying before entering it. This trilogy is a masterpiece and I can't wait to see the next one. Great video guys!! I can't wait to see your reaction to Puss in Boots 2 😎✌
So I’m guessing part 4-6 will take place just before the original Apes movie. Which is much further in the apes evolution. So it makes sense to let Caesar go off into a beautiful sunset. There are a lot of Easter eggs in this film that tease the emergence of the original 1968 movie.
This movie will always be weird because when I saw it in theaters, midway through the movie, just before bad ape is introduced, this dude in the row right behind me yelled out, “this is bullshit!” He then got escorted out but we all found it funny. Now I can’t watch this movie without me or my brother saying, “this is bullshit.”
Really wish you guys would've seen the original saga before this saga. Nova is a callback to the original. So many things that reference the original movies in this trilogy. Helps you understand certain things from these movies better.
The title implies...well, George mentioned during Dawn that things would be different if the apes were fighting soldiers, and that's where we are now. Apes versus, not a civilian outpost, but trained soldiers. A true war, in every sense. Much was made of Kong Skull Island being like 'Apocalypse Now with a giant ape,' but Skull Island was much campier. To me, War for the Planet of the Apes really has that Apocalypse Now feeling, but with an army of apes. Woody Harrelson plays a very Colonel Kurtz-esque figure here.
I just watched the other two reactions to these last week and I'd like to think I was the view that pushed it over the edge to watching the third one lol
The little girl doesn't have terrible perception skills. She just rolled a crit fumble on the check, plus the doll made sure she was rolling with disadvantage.
Just wondering if you missed the middle film? as they said the last film ended in the airport. Which was the first film. Or have I missed the second film reaction
This was prequel trilogy, the next year's movie will be pretty much a remake of the original from 1968, so it will take place like few centuries after this one probably.
Cut away from person holding a gun just to hear a gunshot is a tired cliche at this point. It also felt a bit like they had to wrap everything up in a hurry. You could've just had Caesar leave Evil Harrelson alive and escape as the humans start fighting each other. Having Caesar both blow up the base to bits AND have it trigger and avalanche to bury the rest of the humans was a bit unnecesssary. One of them would've been enough of a climax, but they had to do all three, because of epic reasons.
The apes can speak but choose to communicate with sign language instead i believe. Caesar is the BEST!! hes just an amazing leader and ape, hence why Maurice and others love him so much. This movie broke me heart into pieces. Caesar was never like Koba, Caesar eventually escaped his hate, plus Caesar was only going after the man who murdered his family. Koba hated ALL humans and took out his hate on all humanity. I'd say Caesar's rage is more justified, since Caesar has always been compassionate, forgiving and put most human leaders of today to shame. Notice how Nova, Maurice's adopted daughter, cried for the death of Luka the gorilla but shed no tears at all for her father. That says alot.
Lots of parallels with Apocalypse Now. Woody is very Kurtz, even if he says that wasn’t the intention, and the scene where he shaves his head with a knife in front of his worshipping soldiers is a combination of straight lifts from AN. Also the blink and you’ll miss it graffiti “Ape-pocalypse Now”. And the crucifixions…(and if you haven’t reacted to Apocalypse Now yet, then you should, although Simone might need to look away during the ox scene)
I'm not a religious person, but you can miss the religious symbolism and the parallels are unmistakable. Caesar was born of humble beginnings. His upbringing was largely mundane. He freed his people. He taught his people. He had followers of his philosophy. He had treacherous enemies in his midst. He sought to bring peoples together but they wouldn't have it. He offers peace for everyone. He finds his people enslaved. He suffers and sacrifices to get them food and water. He's crucified on a cross. He shows mercy to his enemies. He delivers his people, through the desert, to the promise land. And, he dies, in essence, for them.
Amazing reaction to an amazing movie. One of those rare instances where the sequels just kept getting better. It was intended to be a trilogy. The 4th one is a stand alone and I believe centuries into the future!
If you want to see the Bad Woody Harrelson to end all Bad Woody Harrelsons, check out Natural Born Killers. It's the role Woody took to break out of his "lovable idiot" typecast that he got from his role on Cheers, and boy did he ever go against type. Just be forewarned: the movie is *mean*.

This is quite possibly the best movie trilogy of all time. It's shocking considering it survived a change in director (Matt Reeves didn't do Rise), to say nothing of being prequels to a movie series that peaked in the '60s. And FAITHFUL prequels too!
This is perfect!!!! I've been waiting for you guys to do this movie & you upload the reaction on my birthday!!!!! Perfect timing! Love the channel!!!!
Cool reaction as always Simone & George, you both take care and have a great weekend
I’ll withhold judgement until random people on the internet who probably haven’t seen it yet tell me it’s crap 😉
And for the ending to this one… as soon as it was clear that Caesar was leading the apes to the promised land, I knew what would happen. If I say any more, though, it’d be a spoiler for The Ten Commandments!
The lil homie with the puffer jacket was my favorite hands down
Most believable CGI characters I've ever seen.
The cgi blends nicely into the movie rather then overwhelming it at the expense of the characters, writing/storyline. Thank goodness this Franchise (isn't) directed by Michael Bay. Otherwise these movies would be all explotions and zero substance.
At the beginning of dawn during the intro with the news broadcasts it says immunity to the ape flu is around 1 in 500
Which with a population of around 7 billion would be around 0.2% of the human population would be about 1.4 million surviving.
The 4th movie is at least a 100 years in the future. Its very diferent, but im looking forward to it.
It's a reference to the original, but they're different continuities so not actually related.
The newest one is confusing, some places I saw it say it was following Cornelius but the official trailer description said it was set decades after this, unless its another ape named Cornelius much later on. And there's also the question of how it ties into the originals with Nova and Cornelius being characters there, unless they are just names that get passed down
The original is set in the year 4000, so I'd say they're just Easter eggs for original watchers.
the main character of the new one is an ape called Noa. There is no Cornelius or Nova in the new one. Its set generations after Caesar and Cornelius.
Kitty purring into the mic at the end is the only kind of ASMR I can deal with.
Oh hell yeah with that Lord of the Clans reference! Love that book! Now let's see Caesar become a shaman! 😂
Woody is the colonel from Apocolypes Now. Nova is the name of the mute woman that travelled with Charleton Heston
Such a great trilogy. If you guys enjoy these, you would have a great time with the 1968 original. It's one of the greatest sc-fi movies all time.
In the original cut of the film, it turned out Cesar was Kaiser Soze.
when i first watched this, it took me about to the middle of the movie to recognize woody
The Colonel is probably one of the greatest villains in sci fi cinema.
I like to think the poop-throwing is why Woody Harrelson was so opposed to feeding the apes. He was denying them their greatest weapon.
In thensecond movie, they said 1 in 500 survived the simian flu. That works out to 0.002%.
So I’m guessing part 4-6 will take place just before the original Apes movie. Which is much further in the apes evolution. So it makes sense to let Caesar go off into a beautiful sunset. There are a lot of Easter eggs in this film that tease the emergence of the original 1968 movie.
Finally!!! You are so awesome!!! Thank you so much!!! ❤❤❤❤
The thumbnails are usually pretty entertaining, but they knocked it out of the park with this one - making Simone look like Schlitzie!
Original planet of the apes is still worth a watch (only the first one)
The first of the original series is far above the rest. But, there are parts of each that I liked.
oh no no the follow up films are great fun to watch and a lot of the stuff in these was inspired by them even as schlocky & silly as they can be
The third one is great fun, but other than that the others are just kinda not as good as versions of this trilogy.
Btw, forgot to mention. There do actually exist(ed) albino gorillas, for example "Snowflake".
Happy and thankful that you got to finish out the trilogy. 🧡💛🧡
Fun fact, the blue vest that the ape from the zoo wears is a reference to the vests worn by apes in the original movies.
Just wondering if you missed the middle film? as they said the last film ended in the airport. Which was the first film. Or have I missed the second film reaction
They said the first film ended with the pilots spreading the virus around the world.
Now that George mention it, I really want a book review of lord of the clans xD
This was prequel trilogy, the next year's movie will be pretty much a remake of the original from 1968, so it will take place like few centuries after this one probably.
Letting Simone wear the took in the thumb nail... George is a man of his word.
Why is the Oasis Mt St Helens?
Simian flu survival rate is 1 in 500 people, so like 0.2% survival chance, which would mean there's about 16 million people left
I love Bad Ape. Yeah, that ending is heartbreakingly bittersweet. What an amazing trilogy though.
Just want to tell you.
In Plague INC there is a scenario where you have to evolve the semian flue, and that game is pretty fun/good and really got a boost a few years back, not sure what happend in 2021 when it came to global healthscares 😏
I was worried they were gonna kill Maurice, just for the emoptional gut punch. I was expecting Caesar to die, but Andy Serkis sure still made me shed tears.
