  • In honour of the 150th Anniversary of Confederation, Hinterland Who’s Who is releasing special videos about some of our most iconic wildlife and their impact on our country’s history and culture.
The next featured species is the American Bison! Historically, bison could be found in Canada from the grasslands and woodlands of the Prairie Provinces to the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and up into the rugged Yukon. For thousands of years, the Indigenous peoples who shared the land with the bison built their very existence around it. It would then have been hard to imagine that these great herds could ever be depleted, but the American Bison almost went extinct in the late 1800s. It has since increased in numbers thanks to conservation efforts. We can support healthy herds of bison by protecting and expanding the natural areas they roam!

@@deannelson9565 The European also had its own subspecies - Lowland bison, Carpathian bison (now extinct) and mountain or Caucasus bison (killed off by 1930).

Actually, the plains and wood bison are the same species.

Also, the recently extinct caucasian bison is actually a separate species from the european bison, the caucasian bison is actually more closely related to the american bison than to the european bison.

Can anyone tell me, please, if the wood bison has one calf per year, and why are there more lowland bison breeders than wood bison?

Would wood bison do well in a Warner climate like Kentucky in the United States?

Wrong, wolves mainly prey on adult bison from ages between 10-15 making the majority of their kills. Making older bison a smaller percentage of their kills.
Wolves seem to be so good at hunting them that they go for them in their prime ages

"Indigenous peoples hunted bison for thousands of years", shows them riding horses.
