Translation: "The performance of the Korean violinist, the piano is beautiful, the expression of emotion is accurate and profound, and the piano is superb. Compared with the various versions of China and foreign countries, I think that it has not yet surpassed her. The story of Liang Zhu is Chinese and belongs to Chinese culture, but once it is formed, it is universal in the world and has little to do with the country of the performer. This is like the Chinese who can get the first place in the Chopin Piano Awards. Concerting by the piano is certainly not as good as the concerto by the symphony orchestra, but it also shows the power of the violin. If you compare the same piano concerto version, it is easier to see the height. The name of this piece is: "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", which describes a love story. In ancient China, women were not allowed to go to school for education. And a beautiful girl, her name is Zhu Yingtai. She wanted to go to school very much, so she persuaded her parents to allow her to pretend to be a man. She looked like a boy, and began to go to a distant school to receive education. In school, she met a young classmate named Liang Shanbo. The two were very friendly and became brothers. But the boy didn't know that she was a girl. The study task was over, and each had to return to their hometown. Liang Shanbo sent her home and walked eighteen miles with her home, reluctant to separate. After the separation, the boy’s teacher’s wife told him that Zhu Yingtai was a girl and asked her to be a matchmaker before leaving school so that the two of them could become husband and wife. After Liang Shanbo learned from his teacher's wife that Zhu Yingtai was a girl, he was overjoyed and immediately arranged for a matchmaker to propose to Zhu Yingtai's house. However, Zhu Yingtai has been betrothed by her parents to the child of a wealthy family. That is a bad boy. Zhu Yingtai disagrees very much, but her parents keep her at home and prevent her from going out. She has no choice. Because of this incident, Liang Shanbo returned home and became seriously ill once, and then died. After Zhu Yingtai found out, she was extremely sad and asked her parents to pass by Liang Shanbo's tomb and worship Liang Shanbo on the day she was sent to marry. Her parents agreed to her request. When Zhu Yingtai paid homage to Liang Shanbo, she planned to bump her head on the tombstone. At this time, there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, and it rained heavily. Liang Shanbo’s tomb blasted a hole, and Zhu Yingtai entered In the tomb, the hole is closed. After the rain passed and the sky cleared, their souls became a pair of butterflies flying out of the grave, dancing on the grassland full of flowers, and finally became permanent lovers.
What a master piece of Chinese music with so much soul and spirit. She played wonderfully. Love the narrative of the music before she played it. This gives more feeling to the music she played.
i love the narration at the start - i grew up listening to this piece and my dad narrated it for me each time. it holds a very special place in my heart.
Bless your heart Ji-won, I've been listening to this violin concerto for decades. It's a story and a song that's been deeply rooted in our hearts. But I have to guess what the music represents or simply enjoy it without thinking. This is the first time a musician explained it in detail. I'm crying my eyes out already.
Absolutely stunning! This is one of the best interpretations I've ever heard. I thought this piece only can be played well by Chinese violinist. Music has no bounds. She is Korean but plays incredibly well and understands the culture. Admire her so much!
I think you were partly correct that you do need some deep understanding to play a certain work well. She's Korean who's from another East Asian culture which is close to Chinese culture.
Probably the best foreign performer is Takako Nishizaki (西崎崇子) from Japan. Her version is very elegant and silky smooth, almost the same as the original masterpieces player, Yu Lina (俞丽拿).
Playing this piece, which is very Chinese, so well is amazing for a Korean girl. Her great efforts in trying to understand and practicing this piece have certainly paid off. She is clearly telling the story with her violin.
Just love it! For the first time in many years I have been so amazed by such a single performance that I have listened to/watched it dozens of times since Jan 2019! I can feel her feelings! All the violinists who want to present Butterfly Lovers can feel the soul of this piece through Ji-Won's unmatched performance! I wish she could do a special album in Ji-Won Style!
Absolutely captivating! Ji-Won is so young, yet so mature and talented. You captured all the intricate emotions of this most beloved love story embedded in this classic Chinese concerto. A top notch world class performance. Hats off to two amazing artists. Im so privileged to be your audience, wish could be earlier. Thank you so much.
I love the brief introduction before she play the music for the audience to better understand the piece of music she is about to play, especially this is a Chinese classic romantic legendary tale that has Chinese tradition and culture that some of the audience might not be familiar with. She is Korean so there is still room to get the full understanding of the legendary Chinese tale and to show the full passion and emotion of the music. Nevertheless, I think over all, she did excellent job both technically and emotionally. I felt the tragic, sadness, happiness and passion of a love story in her play.
"He died from a disease." No, the guy died of a broken heart! Its a tragic case of true love falling victim to forces of tradition and conventions. Before this concerto was composed, the story of Liang Shan Pak and Zhu Ying Tai was already well known for generations in China and among Chinese in SE Asia. Great musician but a simplistic intro to a powerful piece of music.
@@tsaihjohn San Pak died first after knowing Ying Toi is betrothed in marriage to a rich man. But on her wedding day she escaped from the wedding procession to mourn at his grave.
She didn't tell this tragic love story very well too! She doesn't "like" him! She was very in love w/him and he was deeply in love w/ her too (so deeply & purely)!
I guess she meant broken heart is a disease. But actually it is a disease that many ( not all ) Chinese ( and not only just Chinese people ) , not just during ancient time, but even in modern time, are suffering from - that is, bending to authoritative hierarchical system that does not place value on the individual's right - plus - the children - especially girls - are treated as personal property of the parents, to be completely obedience and honor the "family" at all cost.... this may be a love story folklore but I will not be surprise that this happened to many people throughout history
I am from Taiwan, heard about this story when I was a little boy This beautiful player used violin music to interpreted the romantic and tragic story very well.
The love story was more interesting, beautiful yet heartbreaking though... " When her father told her to come back home, she tried to tell the guy that she is a woman, but the guy did not understand at all from her hints... So she lied to him that she has a pretty sister back at home when in fact, she is the only daughter in her family. She wished he could visit her home sometime..and perhaps asked her sister's hand for marriage... Thus he could see her in woman's clothing and realised that she is a woman after all... So after the school term finished, he went and visited her home only to find that she was betrothed to other man... Her parents disapproved of his wedding proposal. He went back to his home...heartbroken and grief left him sick and bedridden... The girl still hoped to see her lover and refused to get married, locked up in her room until her wedding day. Her mother paid the guy a visit hoping him to write her a letter to give up of their love. But the sick guy was to sick and heartbroken, he couldn't write a single letter and vomitted blood on the letter and died. The mother brought home the letter for. And the next day the wedding ceremony proceeded... Everybody thought it went as planned but when the wedding procession passed the guy's grave... She ran towards his tomb to pay respect. Suddenly a heavy rain fell and the tomb collapsed taking her down into the tomb... A while later when the rain stopped... Two butterflies can be seen flying hand in hand... -the end - 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Unfortunately Ms. Song did not tell the whole story of the butterfly lovers, at 3:59 the boy found out the guy is actually a girl, when the boy's family went to propose a marriage, the girl's family has already promised another marriage with a rice family and there would be no way to reverse the decision; that's why that is the saddest section. 4:18, the boy was greatly hit and so depressed that he refused to eat and drink and finally died, 4:28 the girl escaped when she was on the way to her husband's house before her wedding to get to the boy's tomb under a storm like the nature was crying for her unfortunate life. The butterfly lovers is the second story of a fairy tale "lovers for seven reincarnation" that all stories had a tragic end except the last one because it was actually a punishment against two fairies who fall in love in heaven which is prohibited.
Thanks for sharing, this is probably the best non-orchestra version of this song that I have heard. Both musicians do an excellent job of conveying the emotions throughout the piece.
Song Ji-Won narrative of the tale behind the music greatly added to the understanding and enjoyment of the concerto. She then followed with an exquisite musical interpretation of the tale with her violin.
Fabulous! Such a sweet sad tale, so endearingly narrated & superbly performed. Ms. Song, was pure SONG. Technically flawless she played splendidly! The pianist, Ms. Han, was just superb too. (The piece is quite a HANFUL)! Performed in the western classical tradition with a strong Oriental flavour! Thanks for the post! Jamshed Delvadavala Mumbai.
She's can perfectly rendition this concerto most importance they are deeply realized this love story, naturally well done the music from their heart and soul,Amazing !!!👍👍👍
I have heard this concerto so many times played by various Chinese violinists, and none of them really get to the soul of the legendary story. Ji-Won's interpretation is so far the best version. Her youngful feeling and playful mood represents exactly the naughty girl who dressed as a guy in order to attend the boys only school. The later fall in love and heart broken scenes also well presented. Hope to hear Ji-Woo plays again with an orchestra. Well done !
It sounds very melodious, her unsurmountably impeccable skill to control the passion emulating from her stringently accurate tones almost kills me. Fantastic! This is the best version I've ever listened to. Absolutely enjoyable! Frankly speaking, it's not that easy for a foreign violinist to play Chinese traditional music, let alone this kind of music with thickened complexity of emotion, It, to some extends, requires a player to thoroughly understand its indepth expression of the original music composer. I didn't see any Chinese violinists can play as superbly as Mss.Ji . Of course, an unique Chinese violinist, Yu,lina, played the same one last century impressed me deeply. However, to compare with Ji, Mrs.Yu's skill still seems diluted a bit. In a word, as a Chinese, I am tremendously proud of her. I rarely listen to the same music playing more than 3 times in a day. but very exceptional for Ji's version. I carefully listened to this version many times and tried to sense her passion dedicated to the music. Her performance is unbelievable, and unforgettable for ever. I am intoxicated by Ji's superior playing skill carved in with a lot of subtle emotional details. Kindly extending my biggest thump up to her.
She is one of most talent young violinst, the best for violin /piano dual. thank for her piano partner, another talent your women. both have performed many classic piece in their way. what a amazing. I brought their CD on Amazon enjoy very much . in this performance Ji-WON Song plays with her own passion, speed, strong and soft . simply the best.
Breathtaking as always. What a most fabulous accompaniment on Piano. Wondrous and one of my absolute favourite modern classics. Love and light from London.
do you know this is the piece of two graduate student's thesis at there graduation from music school in Shanhai in early 50's, unfortunately, more than half century since his piece was composed, they did not make any other piece like this, Why, China's political system can surely kill the talent.
@@robertc8713 These two graduates created this marvelous piece in the late fifties right during the Great Leap Forward period, one of the typical politically motivated movements in Mao’s age
I remember watching the cartoon version of this as a kid and instantly loving the piece. I then was introduced to the Chinese movie and newest drama remake. Nothing moves me more than the tale and the piece.
Wow! Unbelievable! Ji-Won Song is definitely amazing at interpreting this piece. Also, shout out to Beilin Han. She is from Shanghai where this piece is created. Amazing pianist.
Both the artists are completely immersed in in recreating the beautiful story , so forcefully and with true emotion , beautiful, such lovely music , a balm for a troubled souls .
The music of soul and spirit! This is the best version I have listened and watched in my life. The top of the top notch performance from both musicians! Thank you! ❤
Really enjoyed the whole concerto and the narration was superb. It really gave so much deeper meaning to the piece that is being played. It is a tragic love story with a twist when both lovers ended up together as a pair of butterflies free and together. I love orchestras with such narration as prelude which helps the listener appreciates different segments of the concerto, as the rhythm and pace picks up, slows downs, mellows. Absolutely fabulous!
She memorizes and executes an entire piece and also explains it in her second language which she speaks as flawlessly as her mother tongue. Just shoot me. This is beautiful. I am dead.
I played this piece and performed on stage for a couple of years with my elementary school band, of course I was nowhere close to her techniques back then but thanks for the posting ,it brought back all the good old memories after 2 decades. ( I stopped playing violin at age 12 due to rigorous school curriculum)
Thank you a lot SONG Ji-wei & HAN Beilin !!! I really Love your Play a lot, a lot !!!! Paris; Fr( 30 Dec 2020)!! Better Year in 2021 to YOU !!!! Joyful & Happy New Year to You in 2021!!

Her elegence flourishes in the way she tells a story, plays the violin, and harps on the flow of the melody with can-not-be-more passionate expression
i am so happy this famous violin concerto find audience outside China and it is played by brilliant Korean violinist.
Indeed, she played it beautifully!!!
I thought she died first, not he died first.
@@tsaihjohn San Pak died first after knowing Ying Toi is betrothed in marriage to a rich man. But on her wedding day she escaped from the wedding procession to mourn at his grave.
Superb !
I am from Taiwan, heard about this story when I was a little boy This beautiful player used violin music to interpreted
the romantic and tragic story very well.
Such a beautiful sound! Ji-won, you are the best!
-the end -
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you for explaining.
This introduction to the plot is much better and impossible. Deep and genuine. Great.
Butterfly does not have hand
@@euomu They don’t in reality but they do in music
SagaciousScallop It is just metaphorically speaking, don’t take it literally.
Oh..You are Korean. Thanks for promoting Chinese music.
Unfortunately Ms. Song did not tell the whole story of the butterfly lovers, at 3:59 the boy found out the guy is actually a girl, when the boy's family went to propose a marriage, the girl's family has already promised another marriage with a rice family
and there would be no way to reverse the decision; that's why that is the saddest section.
What a stunning performance and superb execution by both the violinist and pianist! Salute!
Song Ji-Won narrative of the tale behind the music greatly added to the understanding and enjoyment of the concerto. She then followed with an exquisite musical interpretation of the tale with her violin.
Butterfly Lovers story is so amazingly interpreted by two beautiful and talented girls.
Play from a young Korean girl, She really falls into the mood of the performance, very wonderful, very nice!
I’m so glad that she explained briefly about this story~this piece is really beautifully interpreted! Love it!
And I’m glad no one sneezed or coughed .... And I think it tells a lot of things 😂
Great observation, Claire - it was entrancing for all who were there!
Exhilarating and so beautifully executed by two very talented musicians. Bravo! 👏
The 🎹 lady, is excellent. She creates a good 👍 atmosphere, as well as an orchestra there.,😀😀😀

Words won't be enough to express my appreciation for them, they took me to another dimension...great job guys 💖
Jie Li
I don’t know how many times( hundreds times) I have listened this piece, but every time I listened this piece, I just can’t control my tears.
really appreciate that you tell the whole story to the whole world.
OUTSTANDING !!! The Chinese people are so extremely talented. I wish I could read their language.
She is korean.
LOOOOL SHE'S KOREAN
So surprised. She is one of the very talented Koreans! Love it!
The story was Chinese but the performers were Korean.

the performance makes me captivated by China, its culture and music.
She's can perfectly rendition this concerto most importance they are deeply realized this love story, naturally well done the music from their heart and soul,Amazing !!!👍👍👍
This girl memorized this song. It's beautiful and full of feeling..Played so perfectly.
Amazing interpretation. I work in a hospital and hope I can play this for some of the patients ! Stellar young women off to a promising start
Well done !
A beautiful concerto, I would never have guessed it had a sad side to it. nicely narrated by ms. wong, thank you
this piece of music is absolutely beautiful, now I understand the story behind it.
Love and light from London.
cant agree more
almost felt the composers' feelings, speechless......
do you know this is the piece of two graduate student's thesis at there graduation from music school in Shanhai in early 50's, unfortunately, more than half century since his piece was composed, they did not make any other piece like this, Why, China's political system can surely kill the talent.
Her introduction session was as lovely as her violin performance and music.
Omg. I love her. This is a lovely story told with music
Wow! Unbelievable! Ji-Won Song is definitely amazing at interpreting this piece. Also, shout out to Beilin Han. She is from Shanghai where this piece is created. Amazing pianist.
Shanghainese are most talented.
Thank you! ❤
Ji-Won Song & Beilin Han you two tell the story so carrying me away all throughout!
I am dead.
Bravo.! Ji-Won Song.. Your narration & interpretation this piece of music is so lovely.
Beautiful and amazing combination of two great musicians in playing this master piece of classical melody.
The best Butterfly lover master piece so far that I heard ……..
Performance woven with her skills and Emotion depicting the love affair between Liang and Zhu. Bravo 👏👏👏
This is the best of the best in the world! Thank you!
Excellent performance! Ji-Won Song is great !
Very unique and excellent introduction about the background story and the musical expression. The performance is virtuosic! Thanks, Jin-Won.
