      Unfortunately, my resistance to a smart meter was lost when my current gas meter started racking up huge, erroneous usage metering. It literally went rogue and even recorded massive usage when I turned off the main valve for a day. Eventually I got Scottish Power to admit it was faulty and they agreed to "reset" my bill - but only if I accepted a pair of smart meters being installed. These come with a very nice "guiltometer" which I switched off this winter.

    • @chrislee6650
      @chrislee6650 5 месяцев назад +2

      And what do you suggest we do when there is no electricity, or rather no gas to burn for electricity and oil is scarce and all we have is renewable sources that come and go depending on the weather? There is only 30 years left of easy to get to gas, so we have to slow down our usage of it and treat it for what it is, a finite valuable resource that needs to be used wisely. They talk about it all being about Net zero and the climate, but its mostly about dwindling supplies and the end of easy to get to gas and oil in a few decades. Obviously big corporations and elites will use any opportunity to make money, but ultimately people being born today are going to be facing a very different future.

      @@chrislee6650 No idea. There is a perfect storm ahead too in 2028 when the only nuclear power station still on line will be Sizewell. Nuclear generation is currently at roughly 6000MW and this will fall to just 1200MW. Renewables won't make up that shortfall and with the push for EVs, serious problems are only a few short years away.

It was replaced by the utility firm at the time with a standard non-smart 2-rate meter with a built in clock to switch rates at a fixed time, all year round. 23:36 - 06:36 GMT in my case (the clock is slightly off the normal timing for the deal). It evidently has a built in battery that feeds the clock (we've had a few power cuts that shows that). As long as meters like the one at my place are available, they can get round the loss of service from the old Droitwich transmitter as they did at my place.

An engineer arrived, removed the faulty unit and hooked up the, allegedly, 'smart' meter and then tried to connect it to the system. For some reason, it wouldn't connect, something to do with the internet, so I asked what could be done. He said that he happened to have a new 'old' type 'key' meter in his van and replaced the 'smart' meter with it. Anyone who thinks that they were introduced for our benefit doesn't understand how things work. The carrot was you can see how much energy you were using and save , despite having to pay for the £ 13 billion rollout . Now you are at the mercy of the government who can use dynamic pricing (although once it was denied), can remotely cut you off if the grid can't cope (think cold wind free days in winter) and can put you on a prepayment tariff if you fail to pay your bills. The cat is out of the bag. Keep your analogue meter.

      Its no longer required, it is never used so what is the point in it being there. We have Gas power stations now to take up the demand when green energy isn't enough to meet demand. Perhaps they can demolish it and replace it with a fracking site or better still a solar/wind farm.

    E-ON have been pestering me for the past 18 months to get a smart meter as - wait for it - I'm on an economy 7 tariff and the radio signal to trigger the night rate is being withdrawn in favour of using a 4G signal. The only items connected to the night rate mains were a couple of storage heaters which both died so I decided not to replace them and heat the flat on an 'as needed' basis instead. Everything else is on the daytime standard rate side of the consumer unit so the change makes no difference to me.
    Since it has now moved to the new system they appear to be giving me up as a lost cause, they try to phone me occasionally now but all calls to my home and mobile are filtered and they ain't on the approved list! Looks like I did the right thing.

    EDF have just been given the go-ahead to build another nuke power plant in the UK. In France they provide electricity to domestic consumers at $0.14 per Kw/hr. They sell to the UK at $0.48. They are obviously subsidising French consumers at our expense. Why can our MPs not see that EDF are taking the p155? All critical infastructure should be owned and operated by UK companies with an actual person as the CEO; an actual person that can be dragged into court when things go wrong. An investment portfolio cannot serve time.

    I'm fortunate that the meter for my flat is located in the basement of the business I live above. EOn tried to force me onto a smart meter, but when their own engineer visited, he flat refused to fit it, citing the fact I didn't have 24/7 access to the location of the meter.
    I never wanted a smart meter to begin with, so I got on the phone, put the engineer on the line, and had him tell them what he told me.

    A smart meter via a software update done remotely ( and possibly back again) without you knowing gives the co's the ability to do whatever they want. The whole program is already a con. We are paying for a rubbish solution to make more money for the electric co's when they fail which they do we pay again via increased not lower bills. As soon as they get anywhere near 85% or more the units will have a short shelf life. So in less than say 10yrs the log will be obsolete. A bad idea, poorly thoughtout incredibily poorly managed roll out, dodgy infrastructure thwt runs it. Oh & Gov involved. ( allowing costs to be passed on to us for commercial gain) a total scam end to end.

Smart meters make it easier for them to do this without having to pay meter readers to do their job and they get money in the bank earlier. Win win EDF. I suppose there's nothing to stop them billing us every week if the want to.

    I've been on Octopus Agile for a couple of years now and have got SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper per-unit rates for that entire time: Last month, my average was 11.4p per kwh, less than half the standard Flexible rate!
    The cheapest times are often during the day on a weekend, so not always in the middle of the night as you might expect (although this does happen often in the winter). Tomorrow, the prices will be slightly NEGATIVE between 10:30am and 4pm!
    Peak times are usually only 5p more expensive than the Flexible rate, so not bank-breaking. It's common for prices outside peak time to be half the Flexible rate.

    The corollary to higher bills at busier times is lower bills at less busy times. The fact is that the higher the peak demand, the more it costs more to meet it. Smart meters are just the first step in providing the infrastructure that will enable variable charging rates that would make it cheaper for everyone. If you must have your cup of tea at 6pm with the washing machine and drier at full blast, then you should pay more than those who can manage their use a bit better. And if you think the energy companies are holding us all to ransom, why not buy some shares, and invest the money you save on a cheaper tariff. It's win win.

    Corbyn had the solution as he saw the problem years ago; Electricity, Gas and Water should all be in government hands and not ran for profit. These are things we all use and need for a daily life's and when you put that into the hands of corporations that's sole mission is to maximize profits you can guarantee prices will just keep going up until they can't squeeze us no more.
