I'm not poo-pooing your analogy about diamonds.....recommend using a different valued commodity.....diamonds are not as rare as you think. One company (Debeers) in the world has the monopoly on diamond dustrobution to retail sellers. Debeers is not allowed to operate in the United States becuase it violates anti- trust laws. Buyers from US have to travel to acquire new diamonds to the market. When new diamond deposits are discovered and it's not Debeers....they buy that company that found it...and overpay for the right to squirrel away new diamond discoveries.
Also....Debeers parses out a small portion of new diamonds every year of what it keeps in vaults in order to keep the price on diamonds artificially high. If the true amount of diamonds flooded the market you would be paying couple hundred bucks for a clear VVS 1K diamond.
Other fun facts....Debeers started the whole tradition of Engagement rings....that didn't exist 100 years ago. Debeers marketing came up with the "Two months" salary you should spend on an engagement ring which ridiculous.
I did a lot of research on this subject and conflict diamonds which led me to chose a less conficted and less monopolized ring stone for my wife.
