  • I made this to document the history of Kurt Cobain's Univox Hi-Fliers and the early history of the band Nirvana from 1986-1989. I also go over Kurt's mustang with the Soundgarden sticker. Check out my other vids of Kurts In Utero Mustangs, Vandalism Strat, and his Jaguar!

Although it was long ago. A smashed Phase 4 was auctioned on ebay for 10K. It had paperwork from a tour, a setlist, picks, the case, and i think a fed ex shipping receipt in the case in Cobains name.
      Dave Grohl bought it.
I'm not sure if it's searchable but there might be info on it. I actually saw the listing back in the day.

even more underrated than this is Kurt Cobain's telecasters. Even cobains last favorite guitar was a telecaster that would have likely been used for touring maybe for the rest of 1994. It's a really nice guitar and I'm going to make a replica out of a sunburst fender player telecaster HH.

How did you find that info about the 94 Tele? Doing some research. I have seen one picture of him sitting on a couch with I think is a white tele, but that's all. Iv seen the aqua house painted one with a heart painted on it that he was using in Australia. Other than that I've seen David Duchovny with it on an episode of Californiacation.

After Kurt Smashed his White Univox Hi-Flier Phase III (seen in the picture on the right of the video default picture) when Kurt smashed that White Univox Hi-Flier Phase III on November 11, 1989 at Ecstasy, Berlin, (West) Germany. The Next time Cobain used a Univox Hi-Flier was on October 3, 1992. As Kurt's Guitar Tech Earnie Bailey found a Univox Hi-Flier Custom Phase I serial #1002904. Earnie paid $150 purchased from Danny's Music, Everett, WA. Earnie Bailey did all the Mods, This was the first guitar that had a Duncan JB installed in it. Also had a Duncan 59 installed in it, This had an Ibanez Gibraltar bridge installed, And the Tremolo Tailpiece was lowered and blocked, Kurt loved the sound of this "plywood beast". This was Kurt's favorite Univox. The previous owner was a Minister in Everett, Washington.
Earnie Bailey gifted it to Kurt backstage on October 3, 1992 at Carver Gymnasium, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA (as Nirvana was an Unannounced surprise opening act for Mudhoney), without even testing it Kurt went on Stage and used it live, it was used live on October 3, 1992 Carver Gymnasium, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA. October 4,1992 Crocodile Cafe, Seattle, WA And October 30, 1992 Estadio José Amalfitani, Buenos Aires, Argentina and most notably September 25, 1993 Studio 8H, NBC Studios (Saturday Night Live), New York, NY.
Kurt Also used a Univox Hi-Flier Phase II which was used on the Encore of the January 23, 1993 Praça da Apoteose (Hollywood Rock Festival), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil... As well as the last two songs "Smells Like Teen Spirit/Endless, Nameless" from the July 23, 1993 Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY shows.
As Seen in the "Heart-Shaped Box" Music Video filmed on August 31, 1993 & September 2, 1993 Kurt is seen with a White Univox Hi-Flier Phase IV serial #034638. Purchased at The Trading Musician in Seattle for $200 It had a maple fingerboard and a B.C. Rich made Badass bridge
It was used in the Music Video and then it was only used live once which was the 3rd show of Nirvana's In Utero North American Tour on October 21, 1993 Memorial Hall, Kansas City, KS where it was Smashed beyond repair.
The Univox Hi-Flier Custom Phase I
    The Univox Hi-Flier Phase II
    The Univox Hi-Flier Phase IV
Were all brought along on the In Utero North American Tour but they were never used live (except for the Univox Hi-Flier Phase IV which was Smashed at the end of the 10/21/93 Memorial Hall, Kansas City, KS show).
Kurt had bought In Fall 1993 Natural Univox Hi-Flyers, Kurt had two of these, both with maple necks and fretboards. One had the serial #038706. This one was purchased at Guitar Maniacs for $150. They had stock humbuckers (which Kurt liked very much), Badass bridges (the stock humbucker models had single-piece bridges, while the P-90 single coil models had Jazzmaster type bridge-tail piece units). A friend of his painted one of these in a Van Gogh style.
(After Kurt's Death Courtney Love used one of Kurt's Natural Univox Hi-Flier live on Hole Tours in Late 1994 - Early 1995, and also let Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins used it live at Lollapalooza '94 when he played with The Frogs.
Kurt bought a beat-up Sunburst Univox Hi-Flier serial #1002467. Had a mahogany neck, single coils, and was purchased from Danny's Music, Everett, WA. (It Had a Univox Phase I and Phase III style P90 pickup in the neck position and a Univox Phase III and Phase IV Humbucker in the bridge position) the guitar needed alot of work.
It was rumor Kurt had a Black Univox Hi-Flier Phase II or III and it was used on the Studio recording of "You Know You're Right" at Robert Lang's Studio, North Seattle, WA on January 30, 1994 and Kurt used Earnie Bailey's pedal board and Kurt used a 1980s Made in Japan Ibanez SM-9 Super Metal pedal, and an Electro-Harmonix Polychorus.
As Kurt did Not show up to the studio the first 2 days January 28 And 29, 1994 with no call/no show And on January 30, 1994 as it looked like Kurt wasn't gonna show up again he showed up late in the evening with no explanation of his whereabouts and none of his own equipment, luckily Earnie Bailey was fixing one of Kurt's Univox Hi-Flier which he had in his car so he went and grabbed it so Kurt got to use a Univox Hi-Flier on "You Know You're Right" Nirvana's last Studio Session and Last song recorded together. And Kurt used a Marshall JMP50 amp Kurt hated it but hadn't brought his own gear. Guitar Kurt used was Univox Hi-Flier modded by Earnie Bailey and used a 1980s MIJ Ibanez SM-9 Super Metal pedal (Or 1980s MIJ Boss DS-1 Distortion) And the 1980s Electro-Harmonix Polychorus pedal, used from Earnie Bailey's Pedalboard.

I wonder if the k-208 univox parts were actually incorporated into one of the several Mustang copies that Kurt and Krist made around that time. It looks like the pickguard is partly made from a vinyl record. It also doesn't seem to have a neck pickup installed. They said these guitars were awful, so they gave up on making their own guitars. They wouldn't stay in tune and couldn't be intonated. I wonder if any still exist.

Kurt's first mustang wasn't red. It's a color called "Faded Mocha" It's sort of a brownish red type. Camera saturation and white color balance makes it look red. I made 3 replica guitars of it. It's a really original sounding mustang with that univox pickup.

The hair theory & stickers about Kurt at 4:32 is really stupid. If the picture from the house party is from March, and the GESSCO picture is from April, that’s way more than enough time to simply get a haircut. If I know enough about Cobain, he was definitely a guy who loved putting stickers on his guitar. That’s just me though.
