CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Riggs (Mel Gibson) confronts the racist South Africans and tells them to leave the country.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lethal Weapon 2 re-teams Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as, respectively, "loose cannon" L.A. detective Martin Riggs and his partner, the cautious family man Roger Murtaugh. The villain this time is a South African diplomat (Joss Ackland) who doubles as a drug dealer. Though Riggs knows what's going on thanks to characterless character witness Joe Pesci, he can't touch the villain because of "diplomatic immunity." After perils too numerous to mention, Riggs and Murtaugh shoot it out with the heavies on the deck of a South African cargo ship. Lethal Weapon 2, of course, contains as one of its comic high-points a now famous suspense scene: Mel Gibson agonizingly attempting to extricate a terrified Danny Glover from a booby-trapped toilet seat. Director Richard Donner, Gibson, Glover, and Joe Pesci would be reunited three years later for Lethal Weapon 3 and in 1998 for Lethal Weapon 4.
CREDITS:
TM & © Warner Bros. (1989)
Cast: Joss Ackland, Mel Gibson, Derrick O'Connor
Director: Richard Donner
Producers: Richard Donner, Peter Frankfurt, Jennie Lew Tugend, Steve Perry, Joel Silver
Screenwriters: Jeffrey Boam, Warren Murphy, Shane Black

Mel was born to be an exceptional actor ...hell of a director, too 🎭
Saw this flick 7 times the summer it came out -- just graduated from high sch, had my driver's license. Those were the days! And we laughed and cheered all through the movie!
You lucky SOB, I was only 3. Every Second of my life I wish I could've been an adult in those simpler and better times
@@MrMitchelljung Hey don't be salty you guys had good times too, we were just about hair metal and tough guys at the time. There were more left in the 90's and so forth. Right?
You're so lucky. I'd have loved to see this in theaters:(
“Big smile! BIG SMILE!” We all know what that was in reference to lol 😝
Mel Gibson has off the charts charisma
And madness...
@@maxrockatansky2702 Everyone's a little mad on the inside. We all just play along and pretend not to around others.
I'm sorry
One of the best ever, and payback is one of his best
100%
Mel Gibson MADE this movie. He WAS Riggs. Perfectly cast. It would not be the same without him
(edited)
For sure, Mel Gibson = Riggs
Stfu
They got lucky with Clayne Crawford in the TV show too!
And now they've started Lethal Weapon 5 woohoo!!
Martin Riggs is the type of cop worth taking a bullet for. Real, honest, dedicated, tenacious in the pursuit of actual justice, awesome, funny and incorruptible. The best!! And Mel Gibson played that iconic character to perfection. Oscar worthy!!
Martin Riggs is the type of cop worth taking a bullet for. Real, honest, dedicated, tenacious in the pursuit of actual justice, awesome, funny and incorruptible.
Isn't averse to killing an entire tank full of defenseless animals and no doubt justifies passive aggressive antics like this with "They belonged to the bad guys."

Yeah. There is always that.
John McClain from Die Hard isn't too far off
He tried to get Danny Glover to take a big wad of cash. That makes him corrupt.

Back away slowly and don't startle it.
Nope - it's German. Heckler & Koch MP5K 9mm submachine gun. And if Riggs wasn't faster on the draw, he'd be Swiss cheese by the 20 round mag it's loaded with.
R.I.P. Derrick O’Connor who played Pieter Vorstadt passed away on June 29th at age 77.
He was a good actor
The second best lethal weapon dragon after Gary busey
Rest in peace, Derrick O'Connor.
Yes he was a very good actor
He was a great villain and actor, may he RIP. My dad ironically passed away last year at the age of 77, as well.
that chuckle at 1:07 is a stroke of brilliance
+óli austfjörð yeah, and then he goes...."Don't move" and changes to serious.
Like the way he quickly gets serious too...
Only Mel could pull that off
Had to be ad-libbed! That got the biggest laugh in this scene when we 1st saw it. I saw it 6 more times after that.

Mel will always be the man.No one would ve play Riggs better than him.
Didn't they just do a show where they recast his character?
@@loanaoftheshellpeople5627 They did, but the actor was apparently not good to work with that they fired him thus killing Riggs in the reboot series
@@loanaoftheshellpeople5627 that show isn't worth mentioning. Only one Lethal Weapon and that's Mel and Danny.

What evidence do you have that this man is crazy?
..and what evidence do you have that all crazy men are serious?
@Cyrus McWind he didn't tell the jewels to go to their country Poland...
Derrick O'Connor as Vorstedt was one of the most underrated action movie villains of all time. You think he's just an alpha henchman because he doesn't say much, but then he drops the hammer on Riggs later on and you realize Arjen was just Evil Mr. Moneybags, and Vorstedt is the main villain. Not only that, he's the person solely responsible for Riggs' self-destructiveness.
He was the goro subboss of the movie
One of the great villainous performances. A lot of actors would have caricatured and ham acted, but O'Connor made the character believeable. Under-rated.
I think I rewinded the part where Mel pronounces "South Africa" at least 100 times already.
Philip Mathew South ahfrrika?
This was my fav scene from the movie. When he says "South Africa" I lose it. Classic Mel.
"It's the master race" haha. Show this in alabama haha

@Lawrence Rodriguez I loved it. Especially when the toilet dropped on the station wagon
I love the way that Riggs here mocks “Its the ‘master race’ “.

Its goofy in retrospect and more so considering South Africa now is a failed state under the ANC. Just shows that the Hollywood talking points usually end up being wrong.

Fun fact: The gun Riggs used is the Beretta 92FS (he used the Beretta 92F in LW1), and this is also the same prop gun that would be used by Bruce Willis in Die Hard 2!
I read that Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis swapped roles in their respective movies.
@@grumpygremlin2379 and their fighting styles are the same.

Mel Gibson is a Three Stooges fan.
...you knew when he cocked his 9mm something BAD was about to happen!!!

Its when Riggs closes the door... those diplomats already take there guns...

they all walk in the room and no ones stops to close the door so if the door closes itself, it's because there's an intruder, I guess instead of the Boss they re all ex military, it's kind of a reflex

One of my all-time favorite sequels.
They don't make movies good like this anymore. Just a dialogue alone is classic
1:42 Considering this was after he put the bomb in Roger's toilet, Riggs definitely let him off easy when he shot his fish tank.
And considering he always considered Roger the closest thing he’s had to a brother, and that it was him and his family that brought him out of his depression... yeah. Riggs let ‘em off easy.
@@MAnuscript421 The second he found out they killed his wife and Rika, all bets were off though.
Before he met Lorna, Rika was the closest Riggs came to falling in love.
@@Shanethefilmmaker he was angry when number of his colleagues including Collins, Shapiro, Wiler, Cavanaugh and others were murdered before Rika.
Shooting the breeze
And shooting his fish
What's great is how this movie's moral theme held up so well over the years.
Rest In Peace Mr Richard Donner (Director).
In my opinion, the best "hero busting the balls of the bad guys" scene in action history; entering the wolf's den with a grin and a loaded gun; pure Riggs.
Mel Gibson is playing himself in this movie.
What is diplomatic immunity?
absolutely, when they rolled the credits,it should have said, mel gibson played by mel gibson.guys TOTALLY nuts.
+Najee Wilson It's something that the U.N. developed in the Vienna Conventions, and upon confirmed identification, charges against a diplomat cannot be established. They did this to allow for more reasonable leeway to make international relations stronger. However, some abuse this, and it would be up to the State Department to resume or revoke the immunity. After that, they're expelled from the country, and they often face criminal charges when they get back.
He wasn't playing himself when he made and directed The Patriot alongside the late Heath Ledger.
Mel Gibson didn't direct the Patriot. He just starred in it.
1:42 pissed Riggs off. He knew what he called him

Love the attention to detail. He asks to see his firearm (The H&K MP5 Short). Which is made in Germany, and were still relatively new at the time, and used only by specialized military and law enforcement. It's unlikely that a street cop would have seen or known of them.
