My professor is one of the scientists who won a Nobel Prize for liquid crystal discovery and development. While temperature does have some effect on the color, the main color effect is the ionization of the crystals, i.e. how they are oriented in the liquid they're suspended in. They orient between 0 and 90 degrees, which affects the color that they reflect. The blue from pushing is similar to the blue from being on the pink part of your nail because skin is charged, so the liquid crystals were interacting with the skin beneath your nails and on the tips of your fingers and the tips were green because it didn't have as much interaction and was therefore oriented differently. As far as the top coats, the molecules in the top coats vs in the nail polish vs in the acrylic paints interacted with the liquid crystals to different degrees, producing different colors. The colors also depend on which kind of liquid crystal you get, as there are many varieties that are more likely to display certain colors based on the chirality of the suspended crystal! Hope I taught you something!

Pierre died in 2007 and the orginal people to "discover" the crystal effect, where from the 1800s. Although I might be thinking of the wrong person and be mistaken, who knows?

TheTheninjagummybear although acrylic paint has some harmful ingredients and really shouldnt be used in place of facepaint or bodypaint; HOWEVER, most craft acrylic paints are nontoxic which r safe to use. Although, i would advise u dont do so. Honestly, getting acrylic paint on the skin connecting to ur nails for a few seconds to a minute is not going to cause "irreversible nerve damage" if u use nontoxic paint.

One thing about liquid crystals though is that some of the organic compounds in them can be irritant and can be harmful to the environment, so it’s pretty safe on nails just don’t put excessive amounts on your skin or pour it down your drain.

well not really because when you are mad your body gets warmer and when you are sadder it gets colder.
Well mood rings are made out of a thermal-like substance as the color it is changes based upon the temperature of your skin, which changes temperature based upon your mood (though it's really not that noticeable and takes a while for the mood ring to pick up on). Mood rings do work, it's just that when they actually start working, we're usually too into whatever mood we're in to notice.
