  • August 15, 1985-a red-letter day for Assam. It marked the culmination of a six-year movement that aimed at flushing out illegal immigrants or ‘foreigners’. The movement was spearheaded by student activists but was backed by almost everyone-women, social bodies, even schoolchildren. It led to the signing of the Assam Accord. That ushered in a new era of regional political parties, not just in Assam but elsewhere in the North East. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, who was then in Guwahati, working as a journalist, details how it all happened.

Would like an analysis of the complexities of implementation of the clauses in Assam Accord. Would be great if a series is done.

Thanks for covering our movement. However, till date the accord has not been implemented in its entirety. Even after 35-years of signing of the Assam Accord, Assam continues to reel under the illegal Bangladeshi infiltration ever since and Clause-6 is yet to be implemented.

Assam has been given step motherly treatment since independence. We must reconcile their issues

Many thanks for this. Its relevant not just to those born post 2000, but also to people like me born in 80s. We have been taught history, which suited one political party and its twisted narrative which wrongly termed Indira Gandhi as the 'Iron Lady' and Rajiv Gandhi as 'A Reformist'. Hope you also do similar vignettes/nuggets related to other states, especially from the 60s to 90s period, when we all got brainwashed into a flawed 'Secular/Liberal' realm.

The Indegenous societal Traditions of Assam ,the sanctity of its culture, were severely assaulted upon under the British policies, and the final nail in the coffin was the creation of East Pakistan(now Bangladesh, 1947-1966) .The artificially engineered, sudden migration of population during the times of 🇧🇩 Liberation War, 1966-1971 was when the Assam Crisis was overflowing the brink .It just found an expression in the form of "Assam Aandolan" when the "Seat of 🇮🇳 Power - DELHI" declared that They doesn't respect Assamese Sub-Nationalism and Sentiments .
Hopefully, Today's India is Better than Yesterday's Delhi 🙏

@@npd9758 there no mention of CAA in assam Accord.. Assam Accord is to detect, detain and deport of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh... CAA is to giving citizenships to these Bangladeshis... CAA is a violation of national commitment made to Assam by government of India..

@@biswsjitbordoloi4329 True. They play politics by fooling citizens. Even if they declare NRC or CAA. No one is going to follow.Because the government doesn't know how to implement rules and regulations.
