Here's how a video game dev explained to me how optimization works. He compared it to packing a suit case with clothes. Naturally with a bigger suitcase (PS5/Xbox X) you can jam more clothes into it but you can also fit more clothes into a smaller suitcase (PS4/Xbox one/Switch) by carefully packing it, folding up all the clothes, organizing things into the pockets of the suitcase etc. Sometimes no amount of organizing will squeeze all the clothes you have into the suitcase and you need a bigger one but other times it's just that they threw all the clothes in without organizing it very well.
The face I made when I saw the gameplay on base PS4. That’s insane, Taylor. Won’t be picking it up for a while, but I will definitely be jamming to that boss music. Thanks for the review!

The game's been out for a while in Japan so if it hasn't been fixed by now I have a hard time believing that it's ever going to get fixed. It is surprising that performance is such a big issue for Taylor though. I don't see anyone else complaining about it.
@@lain11644 This is what surprises me too. Are graphics the only thing that makes a game good? Rather shocked by this emphasis in his review and by many of the comments. I play games for gameplay and how fun they are. A couple of my friends got review copies of Monark and say its amazing!
@@sonicmania9993 I think his complaint is about performance. If it is true that the game runs at 10fps in some areas then it is absolutely a problem. I get motion sickness at low frame rates.

Always appreciate the content! I have it pre-ordered for switch but now I'm super nervous. I'm still getting it due to being a jrpg collector but I hope it runs...at all.
Jesus, preordering is dumb to begin with, even more so for a third party Switch game in 2022. There is about ZERO chance it is even remotely optimized at all for the Switch.
@@danbooke2001 sure it may be dumb, and hell maybe I'll suffer for it later. I like collecting for switch =/ sure not everything or hell much, is optimized but I don't usually care that much. On the subject of pre-ordering, I like to make sure I at least get a copy held for me. Granted, I don't agree with some places practices but 5 bucks now and the rest when it comes out for a game I can guess won't be easy to come by is ok for me. Maybe not for you and I respect that.
@@markdiaz8895 I love my switch so much that I'm not going to buy a ps5 any time soon (if ever - SoyNy's siynn sorre ship of games in America after they relocated to comniefornia makes me never want to support them again). I have a hacked switch, a hacked ps vita, and a gaming laptop, all of which I can play wherever I want, even if I want to stay in bed on a weekend. With TV-based consoles, I'm tied to sitting in front of a television, even when I might not want to sit in front of it. With the switch, even if I'm on my couch, I can at least lay back on it. Portable gaming is the best.
Appreciate the transparency in this review I've been hearing of the frame rate issue with the game Regardless I'm hoping the game ends up enjoyable to play/experience
Elden Ring had a similar problem when I ran it on my PS4. The Frame Rate got choppy whenever there was a lot of action on screen which if you’ve played a from soft game, you know that is very often. I don’t know what’s up, if it’s a problem with the game or the console, but so far Monark plays just fine on my switch so I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess the common denominator and likely root of the problem is something to do with PS4. Why are recently released PS4 games experiencing issues like poor frame rates?
I hope they release a patch for PS4 that alleviates some of the frame rate issues as that’s really my only main issue with this game. The battle system especially looks really interesting. I’ll probably wait and get it when it eventually goes on sale.
I pre-ordered 2 collector's editions by accident for ps5. Honestly I wouldn't sell the copy for anything. I like this game and so far have had zero issues with it.
I cringe whenever I see an srpg battle system with free movement because it's always so bad. Positioning is is key in any srpg but free movement means it's extremely inaccurate and very easily you can be just a hair's breadth out of range or still within enemy attack range when you thought your positioning was perfectly fine. That's why using fixed squares is so superior because at all times your positioning is 100% exact and if it's bad it's 100% your decision and just bad luck because you misjudged distance by a single millimeter. I tried a game like this once and instantly hated it because half the time it was that tiny distance that meant my characters were getting hit more often and enemies were just out of range frequently.
Playing it on PC, the max settings reveal some interesting details on textures, surprisingly, since the game is so simple in its 3D design, and always a comfortable 60+ fps. One thing I'll shed some light on, if you reach 100% madness outside of battle, you're just transported to the infirmary, no game over or progress lost. You also DO want to reach madness status in battles for higher points, assuming you have the awakened buff, have some low-tier fiend reach madness and then do a party resonance with the MC to reach enlightment which unlocks OP abilities and damage dealers, it's a nifty strategy for bosses. Also, you CAN recruit a team full of characters and not fiends assuming you're grinding battles and are not in a specific chapter of a character, then yes, you'll be teaming up with said character and fiends, but outside of it you can recruit whoever assuming they're available. 58h in so far, haven't beat it since I'm focused on grinding, maxed lvls on MC and Ryotaro and stopped on the rest of characters at lvl 69 (nice), will continue when they become available since I'm at a story-sensitive part in the game. All in all, really enjoying my time with the game and surprisingly so since this jrpg came out of nowhere and iirc the character artist (for portraits/promotional art) is the same guy that did Nier Automata's so here's another easter egg for ya. Didn't know ps4's version was so subpar which makes no sense for the game, ffs I played cyberpunk 2077 on a base ps4 and it didn't run as choppy as you showed Monark running lol. Anyway rumbling over, enjoy the game if you ever do decide to get it guys! P.S: Some riddles CAN get annoying but the answer is most likely literally in front of your eyes and they offer a nice confidence boost once you figure them out, they do for me anyway!
This title is very funny if you are brazillian. As for the video, it is unfortunate that this game didn't live up to its promise but there is space for b-tier jrpgs I guess.
@@TheGamingShelf Monark is one of the most famous internet personalities in Brazil (a podcast host) who’s undergoing some difficulties right now due to controversial statements. The whole internet in Brazil is talking about him which is why the name is funny to us :)
I played this game on pc so far I believe I'm 70% of the game. First off I don't have any framerate issues whatsoever, when I play a JRPG what speak to me is story and combat and honestly the story is entertaining and what I like the most about this game is giving you options which I believe will result in a different ending I'm pursuing it picks up really well after half of the game, it doesn't feel linear for the second half. regarding combat, I've played Valkyrie chronicles before and it is very rare when I don't finish a game in that case the combat was really, really, really bad the AI is hopeless in that game. In Monark the combat and the AI is really good in the majority of aspects it feels like the choices AI take are well thought for the most part, the only think I kinda don't understand is why enemies in the far way don't move sometimes they buff itself which is good but I feel this is just normal in a strategic game of this style. personally for me I enjoy puzzles in every game, in the case of Monark some of the puzzles are really well thought and encourage you to investigate, something modern game lost for the past decade, in modern puzzles you figurate it out really quick because they don't want the average player feel like they are pushing a huge wall every time making them low in energy, In Monark I believe they went for a safer route by giving really good hints at the early stages and working their way up. TL;DR should you play this game on pc? hell yeah 0 problem regarding performance. The story, combat and puzzles are amazing, pricing a bit expensive but the game hooks you up.
So, I've been debating about whether to get this game or not, because it does look interesting. But the biggest problem I've been having is looking for gameplay of it, as PlayStation Store only has a trailer of the playable characters in that game. I clicked on this video to see if it really wasn't worth getting. And after hearing your review of it (thanks for keeping it spoiler free, by the way), I plan on getting it someday
I enjoyed the gameplay and story but god is it a grind. I don't think I'll bother with the postgame content. Edit: Well I uh finished the postgame content thank god for casual mode only took a few hours.
"Monark is inexcusable in 2022," because it features a silent male protagonist who is also amnesiac? "because it runs really badly on some consoles" oh. I guess that's pretty awful as well.
As a fan of JRPGs, I feel the need to point out that it’s very normal to have a silent or near silent protagonist in these games. It’s a design choice, very Japanese. Think the Persona games, etc. Very, very typical. That’s not a flaw, it’s a difference in cultural expectations.
@@masterchiefpettyofficerspa3646 and what these games also have in common is the ability to create your character, because they are the blankest possible slate for a reason, so those games I enjoy very much!
I really like this honest review. It is clear there are great things to this game ., It clearly looks fun and combat seems fun as well but it has many problems as well. And you made it clear very well. Helping people understand what is good and bad in the game.
The performance problem you mentioned is really weird, because I haven't had that problem at all on PS4. Well, I guess at one moment, when I was scrolling fast through student profiles the game started to stutter a bit because stuff was trying to load in and I'd already moved to another profile, but that's it. I haven't had any of the performance issues you did, despite being on the same system.
Is that from the demo or the full version? I will say the game had more issues in areas after where the demo ends. It seems like it runs particularly bad in areas with a lot of NPCs.
I wanted the switch version of this, but hearing it runs that bad on PS4 makes me fear how it might go there... Hopefully they patch or fix that for the physical release. Edit: forgot the release is quite soon so yeah, doubt it'll be fixed by then
You just have to awaken the protagonist every turn Then keep giving your turn to one fiend to make them go mad. Party resonate and every party member is engligtend and with the skills even after you use your special stats will stay for three turns. Easy to get back into that state in three turns while still attacking.
I was excited to get this game eventually but... Like many, Elden Ring is about to take over my life so I was gonna wait. I also completely forgot about it till yesterday somehow. I have a PS5 so performance wouldn't be to big an issue but it doesn't sound like the game is especially hitting it out of the park either? Might be a wait for a sale kind of game.
@@TheGamingShelf makes me sad considering the creators behind it but I really don't have time to play B tier anymore with work and life. I gotta focus on the good. Maybe a sequel can be an improvement. Maybe I'll finally get around to 13 Sentinels or Ys IX for my next JRPG haha
Davidvinc did a review of the demo and showed it running badly on PS4, then I played it on PS5 and it was perfect, no hitches, no jumps, super smoothe. I'm going to guess that they will be dropping a patch for this on PS4, but super odd the issue happens there anyway. I really enjoyed what I played in the demo and ordered the special edition so hopefully all is well with the PS5 version. I feel there is a lot to like here, sans the the PS4 performance issue.
@@sonicmania9993 oh I'm definitely keeping it, just the reviews for the game have been all over the place from what I've been reading, not that it matters much for me anyways as I buy most JRPGs.
So the "Giant" problem doesn't pertain to the majority of consoles its available for as far as is stated in this video. I play on PC whenever possible, this gave me absolutely 0 new insight into the game.
@@TheGamingShelf The title seriously comes off as clickbait, even if you didn't mean it that way. You say elsewhere in the review many good things about the game, but for you the #1 most important thing to say about the game is the slow framerate on Base PS4? That's more important than the fact that the game is otherwise pretty awesome and shouldn't be missed by fans of this sub-genre of JRPG? Video titles are important.
That footage of the frame issues is wild, the demo didn't have any of those issues on my base PS4 that I could tell. Of course, that's only up to the first boss. I'll be getting PC.
@@TheGamingShelf I like the fact that there is a demo in these cases, I played a demo for Daemon Machina and ended up buying it, more and more JPRGs and ARPGs are doing this now which is a GOOD thing!

Stick until the end to find out what's wrong? No chance! That's the thing I want to know first. I'm skipping. I honestly thought the problem would be random battles - that would be inexcusable. The really inexcusable thing here is thinking players should play things at release. With very few exceptions, I don't buy any game until it's at least a year old.
"Inexcusable" thinking that people should play things at release? Dude, you do realize that if no-one buys a game the first year it's out, there won't be any more games like that, right? And that the dev studio might go under? But don't worry: those of us who really love games like this and want to support the devs will buy it day one, so you can have your discount experience in a year or two, and maybe even see another game like this in the future. We've got your back. I don't buy every game day one, but I buy the ones I'm excited about day one for sure to support the games, the game genres (like JRPG's) & the devs.
@@sonicmania9993 Buy it day one only if the reviews are good and it caters very well to your taste. It is a disgusting practice to support a game you have 0 idea on if it is a cash grab unfinished PoS or a functioning product that deserves support.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 It is a disgusting practice to get preachy telling well-informed gamers how to buy their games. You think I can't tell which games are "cash grab unfinished PoS"? I know my game tastes very well, I know most publishers very well, and I have multiple spreadsheets full of my own research to guide me to make the right purchases in accordance with my gaming budget. I know which games to support day one, which games to wait for reviews (many of which are out day one anyway, in this modern world, plus lots of pre-release gameplay footage), which games to wait for physical, which games to wait for first sale, which games to wait for deep sale. I've been buying games according to those four or five categories for 30+ years ("wait for physical" only a category for the last few years), and I have been unsatisfied with a day one purchase a grand total of five or six times in my life. Sold those six games to friends or a second-hand store and got most of my money back. I choose to support games I know I'll like and the game developers who make them. Sales of a game in its first month are HUGELY influential on the future of the series, the genre, the dev team... I know exactly what kind of game PS5 Monark is going to be, and I can't wait to play this weekend. Elden Ring too. If you guys want to wait a year to save $20-30 bucks on those games, that's your prerogative: I can't judge your gaming budget/priorities, etc. That's what works best for you. But if everyone waited a year to buy Monark & Elden Ring, there wouldn't be any more games like Monark & Elden Ring. I support good games, games people like me want to see more of. Those "cash grab" games are the ones I don't want to see any more ... even though they seem to be proliferating at a nauseating rate.
I am still surprised that the game runs so bad! I hope they patch it up soon since the game looks very promising. With PS5 being tough to find or too expensive for many, it's a shame that many gamers will have to deal with performance issues like this But this goes to say/show that the base PS4 and soon PS4 pro as well will not be considered for future games optimization and next-gen is already starting to become the main focus, which was inevitable. I just hope more get their hands on the new-gen so we can all play new games and enjoy them.
Tried the demo on switch and it was choppy. I passed on it. I’ll probably get it on PC once it drops in price. I’m just going to wait until Sophie and elden ring to come out to get some rpg fun.
It’s really good on PC with max settings, frame-rate has been stable around 60 and no noticeable aliasing. Does make my Razer Blade 15 a bit hot but not too bad.
Man you hate to see it, Fuyuru has much more misses than hits and it’s clear they can do more but can’t with their cheese string budgets , well appreciate the review job Taylor,
Shame it looked like it had good potential, I still believe it can be great if they fix a lot of the issues addressed in a future sequel going forward if there is one.
I enjoyed the couple hours or so I played of the demo but it's poorly paced in some ways to me. Like as far as I'm aware you only really fought battles though the phone you picked up in the miasma and other than that it was mostly just your characters talking. Which, I have no issue with characters talking, but it feels like a major issue In a lot of Japanese written games and media is that they say so much and mean very little. There's very little actual development or any commentary or themes being explored, it's just talking about going to talk about these things in a circle for an hour. I l liked the character art and the menus, voice acting was solid in my opinion, battle and level up system seemed interesting, I just get burnt out on the way those battles are handed out. That's just my take tho.
Hmm I played the trial on switch & didn't have issues I don't think. However, with elden ring coming out soon and the next gen patch for cyberpunk 2077 FINALLY coming out yesterday my schedule is all booked which is too bad bc I was going to give this a try
Thank you for making this review. I have only a PlayStation 4 so. I really gald i have not bought this game yet. But I will definitely buy it on sale. It sounds pretty. Interesting.😛😙
Thank you for reviewing it on base PS4. Not a lot of reviews have been playing the lastest releases on the last gen and how the game runs is always something I want to know. I'll be waiting till it gets fixed or till I get a PS5 Great review as always!
I have it on switch, it's relatively fine for the fps. However it is marginally uglier than the other version, game looks blurred compared to the pc and play versions
I enjoyed Caligula and also played crystar which were other furyu games for the stories, and am a Persona fan so this caught my eye. I do wonder what's with Furyu and having PS3 level graphics on PS4/5 games. Monark looks like a PS3 game, but the story and battles sound interesting
It's interesting how people have such different experiences. A different review I watched found the game to be extremely grindy, which is what put me off
This game looks very similar to Lost Dimension on Vita. I’m currently playing that and really enjoying it. Hopefully they can patch some frame rate issues.
If you wonder how it runs on switch, it's got basically a 3ds-like graphic. I've played the demo in portable, so maybe it gets a bit better docked on a tv. I've also tested the demo on a ps5, and sure that's the best option of all.
If you plan on getting it definitely check out a switch-specific review. The demo on PS4 was fine for me too but then later sections past the demo were where it ran poorly.
Man, I’m glad I snagged a PS5 and just skipped the PS4 entirely. Even with PS5 shortages, I figured it wouldn’t be wise to settle for an older gen console. There are an increasing number of games that just don’t run well on older systems. Honestly this game probably should’ve been made just for PS5.
Iam playing hzd2 on my ps5 I have a lgc1 65inch the game looks great but there is a flickering on short grass very annoying has anyone noticed this please let me know
This is definitely a game I've been wanting to check out. Hipefully there's a patch on the PS4 version sooner rather than later. Also, another game I might be picking up soon, that just released, is Edge of Eternity.
@@TheGamingShelf I haven't heard too awful many people talking about it, but for those that have, its been nothing but praise. Definitely feel like it's a hidden gem. Especially with all the talk mainly being about Elden Ring, Ghost Wire Tokyo, and Pokémon Legends.
I'm actually more surprised that people are still using the base PS4 though. I feel like the devs should abandon the base model and work on pro version in the future. Its really old by today's standard.
I think a lot of people are in this space of wanting to just get a PS5 and not being able to find it and then thinking it’s not worth getting a Pro. Plus I think they stop manufacturing Pros but I could be wrong 🤔
So ... it's runs like a dream on PS5, runs very well on PS4 Pro, and is playable on PS4 base console? Sounds fair to me, since it's 2022. If a player still uses PS4 base console, they can choose to play it choppy now, or wait to play it smooth when they upgrade to PS5. Not sure why this is "INEXCUSABLE" in all-caps. Plenty of multiplats are not perfectly optimized to every platform, and the publisher is essentially providing a playable last-gen version of a current-gen game, for those who haven't been able to buy a current-gen console. Lancarse & Furyu are not rolling in cash to provide perfect optimization everywhere. Maybe they should cut $10 from the PS4 price, I guess.
A game simply being playable is not good enough in 2022. The way this games runs, to me, is inexcusable. Monark is not a very visually demanding game so there’s no reason it should run as poorly as it does kn PS4.
@@TheGamingShelf No wonder small videogame publishers are going out of business or getting bought up left and right these days. When even thoughtful reviewers such as yourself decry that the multiplat optimization they are able to offer is inexcusably bad ... it's time for them to give up. They can't compete. A polarized gaming world with two sets of games -- expensive games from big publishers, and simple-graphics indies only -- that's the future we're heading for. AA's are getting squeezed out of existence, being held to the same graphics expectations as games from much larger companies. It's too bad ... because in my view those AA's are the reason 8th gen was so great (specifically PS4/Vita). I pray that genre fans will continue to support games like this one from Lancarse & Furyu ... but I won't be surprised if both companies are gone in 5 years.
@@TheGamingShelf Because I'm friends with some YT content creators (so I know the ups and downs of the YT gig), I'm checking back in with you here -- 4 months later -- to make amends. I was pretty upset with your framing of your Monark review/op-ed at that time. Really it was mostly the all-caps "INEXCUSABLE" in the title that got under my skin. We JRPG fans, as I'm sure you know well from conversations in your comments, can be very protective of games and devs/pubs that we like (especially the little guys). As of today I'm re-subscribed to your channel (under one of my other YT personas), and I want to say that I really enjoy your content! Your enthusiasm for the JRPG genre is evident, and you give a lot of good info distilled down into useful videos -- so I hope you keep enjoying the games, and get satisfaction out of making your videos, informing YT subscribers, engaging in conversations with us, etc. A lot of other JRPG-centered creators have either burned-out with making content (like Jay RPG) or gotten more and more focused on certain things I don't find too interesting. So I'm really thankful that channels like yours exist -- fighting the good fight as champions of good JRPGs. The genre seems to be pretty healthy these days -- and you content creators bear a small part of the responsibility for that success. Thanks!
Hhm the switch Demo runs great or I just didn't experienced any issues. I like the style of the game and the story from what I saw but sadly the gameplay just isn't for me.
Brah... you at least have to do stuff like let your madness meter hit max and other things that people are going to want to see during a review.... Nonetheless it was an OK review... pretty much the same thing I gathered from any other monark video I watched so far and the more I watch the less I actually kind of want to play.. and my reason personally is that I pretty much feel like I've seen and played this game many times before and I really don't have time to throw in any more average games atm into my Playlist... I'll get it and beat it sooner or later...
This game has a lot of design problem. pacing is really bad IMO, battle can spend a lot of time later in the game. the pacing between exploration and battle is kinda jarring, maybe it's just me not really into the manual puzzle, but lots of backtrack and exploration overall is not fun. (the school dungeon is really bland) You literally need grinding to progress as even if you are nearly max level, you still having difficulty finish the game. There are no real consequences for the madness reaching 100%, you are just teleported back to the safe room, which you can easily access with fast travel. (and ironically you do need to back to safe room to reduce madness, so is there even a reason for the madness mechanic to be even present?) really show that the design is kinda not solid here. FPS problem just add salt to the wound. My only favorite part with the game is the portrait and bust artwork is really good.
I’m gonna play it on PS5 but that PS4 performance is bad lol hopefully there’s a day one patch or something for those players. Can’t even imagine how bad the Switch version will play
Switch version is much more imporant than base PS4 from a sales perspective in Japan especially. So they probably spent more of their limited optimization resources on Switch than on PS4. Switch version may end up being just fine... but yeah, PS5 is the way to go if possible.
Thise game looks like a barebone Shin Megami Tensei If mixed with Persona 5 and Caligula Effect + Valkyria Chronicles battle system but only with Fencer class.
Did you forget that there is a platform called PC? I don't think you ever mentioned it in your video. Or maybe since it's NIS, so you thought that they won't release the game simultaneously on PC too? ...cough...cough ... TLoH ... cough ... cough...
Which platform are you planning on playing Monark on?

But I don’t get how Japanese devs still uses decades and old engines ( PS2 era ). I would put it on the level of Ys IX.
I want to play on Switch but leery now.
I was honestly leaning toward PS4 until I saw your review. Now definitely going PS5.
Very good analogy
That’s actually a pretty damn good analogy!
I might use this advise to encourage myself and others.
The face I made when I saw the gameplay on base PS4. That’s insane, Taylor. Won’t be picking it up for a while, but I will definitely be jamming to that boss music. Thanks for the review!

I pre-ordered and got it early. I haven't had any problems and I'm playing on a Switch lite.
I got it for the switch. My only "complaint" is how painful the grinding is late part 1. If they sold spirit as a DLC, I'd be tempted.
How is the switch version? Stable or not?
Awesome! Thanks for the review. If this is the only issues the game is having, I'm totally gonna pick it up! It looks so fun!
If you play on PS5 then you’ll definitely have a good time.
Appreciate the transparency in this review I've been hearing of the frame rate issue with the game Regardless I'm hoping the game ends up enjoyable to play/experience
If you play the PS5 version you’ll have a good time 👍
@@TheGamingShelf Thank God I got the ps5 version it seems
Gotta follow the same strategy too was quite lucky to find this review and take note of the bad Ps4 performance.
I pre-ordered 2 collector's editions by accident for ps5. Honestly I wouldn't sell the copy for anything. I like this game and so far have had zero issues with it.
Awesome! Glad you’re enjoying it.
Não dá pra ouvir sem pensar no Monark
Are there some odd Portuguese words in the title? 😆
@@TheGamingShelf Monark is one of the most famous internet personalities in Brazil (a podcast host) who’s undergoing some difficulties right now due to controversial statements. The whole internet in Brazil is talking about him which is why the name is funny to us :)
I'm one of those people who generally can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, and even I think that frame rate is inexcusable.
Great to hear! If you don't have performance issues it's certainly a cool game.
Cool! I hope you enjoy it
Pretty sure there's a demo on playstation
Man, wasn't expecting the performance to be that choppy! Game looks alright apart from that
Yeah there’s definitely some fun to be had if you have a PS5.
I enjoyed the gameplay and story but god is it a grind. I don't think I'll bother with the postgame content.
Edit: Well I uh finished the postgame content thank god for casual mode only took a few hours.
"Monark is inexcusable in 2022,"
because it features a silent male protagonist who is also amnesiac?
"because it runs really badly on some consoles"
oh. I guess that's pretty awful as well.
Haha I didn’t even think of that first one!
As a fan of JRPGs, I feel the need to point out that it’s very normal to have a silent or near silent protagonist in these games. It’s a design choice, very Japanese. Think the Persona games, etc. Very, very typical. That’s not a flaw, it’s a difference in cultural expectations.
Games like Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numeria also have silent protagonists who's also an amnesiac.
Thank you for the kind words! I try to keep it honest every time.
This game looks awful in every aspect.
Edit: forgot the release is quite soon so yeah, doubt it'll be fixed by then
Yeah I hope they patch it too because man is it rough right now.
On switch the frame rate wasn’t a problem for me if it helps any.
Good to know! I guess my PS4 is just in its last legs 😂
You just have to awaken the protagonist every turn
Then keep giving your turn to one fiend to make them go mad.
Party resonate and every party member is engligtend and with the skills even after you use your special stats will stay for three turns.
Easy to get back into that state in three turns while still attacking.
Ooof, that performance. Was watching the Switch Review (Japanese version) of Rozalin and it looked fine, basically locked 30
I’ve been playing on Switch. I’ve only just started getting some frame rate issues on the Greed portion. Otherwise, it’s been running really well.
Well for all those wondering, ive bought and played the game on my ps4 and ive never had the issue so they prolly fixed it
That’s great!
It’s a B-tier game for sure. If you’re excited for Elden Ring I would probably get that.
@@Itsakoopahere Atelier Sophie 2 is also coming on the 25th so, even if Elden ring wasn't released, I'll be playing that instead.
@@nakazo9929 this next couple months are just way too packed with games.
Oh definitely! You’ll have a good time on PS5.
What a shame, still keeping my PS5 limited edition pre-order though, mainly to support NIS and it being a JRPG.
Nis has so many financial problems right now, that may explain the many small budget games gets.
Oh the game is solid on PS5! You’ll have fun.
It's great on PS5, you should keep your pre-order to enjoy the game.
Boy, your experience with this game running badly on PS4 but ran great on PS5 was basically my experience with Necromunda Hired Gun.
BTW if the meter gets to 100% it just transports you to the infirmary.
Ah okay I figured it was something like that! Thanks for sharing.
I didnt watch this because of clickbait but i enjoy your reviews also be interesting to see if people skip to the end because of the title
It’s actually not clickbait at all. Here’s the time stamp if you’re curious to see 5:42.
There’s a feee demo on switch, ran fine for me
I think that areas that run poorly are after the demo, sadly. Just be careful.
@@TheGamingShelf I like the fact that there is a demo in these cases, I played a demo for Daemon Machina and ended up buying it, more and more JPRGs and ARPGs are doing this now which is a GOOD thing!
4:00 I LOVE that system
If Japanese fans aren't complaining then I wont either.
It’s a solid game if you can get it to run well!
The frame rate problem is it only on the full game? Because the demo didn't have those problems.
It’s mainly in the areas past the demo. The more NPCs the worse it gets.
I had that problem but luckily for you I tried in a test run see if I could able to use the Awakening along with that madness didn't workout but I have a good idea for it i'll tell you once I do it
Stick until the end to find out what's wrong?
Thanks Taylor, as a base PS4 owner that is good and important to know !
Glad I could help you out!
Yeah a real shame about PS4 :/ Thankfully PS5 runs like a dream.
The Switch being the worst of all the last gen systems… eeek
Hopefully they release an update/patch to help with the frame rate
I sure hope so!
Man you hate to see it, Fuyuru has much more misses than hits and it’s clear they can do more but can’t with their cheese string budgets , well appreciate the review job Taylor,
Yeah it’s a bummer their technical prowess is so low. Thanks for watching as always!
Shame it looked like it had good potential, I still believe it can be great if they fix a lot of the issues addressed in a future sequel going forward if there is one.
It’s honestly a good game if they can patch it to run better.
Kinda surprised I got through the demo without any extra Leveling up or deaths… was it because I am a fan of the genre?
Yeah I agree. They definitely talk a lot without really saying anything. They really needed to get to the point.
No comments on the insane difficulty spikes?
The demo clinched it
I AM GETTING IT ON SWITCH
Does this game have a new game plus?
Not as far as I know.
Hmm I played the trial on switch & didn't have issues I don't think. However, with elden ring coming out soon and the next gen patch for cyberpunk 2077 FINALLY coming out yesterday my schedule is all booked which is too bad bc I was going to give this a try
Great review and good stuff to know. This one seems like a pass for me, but also looks like it had some good ideas.
Yeah it’s just…okay. Money best spent elsewhere honestly.
If there was to ever be a second one.
I think they'd buff out most of the issues easily enough.
i played the full demo so I'm getting it for ps5 , but I'm sorry to hear that for ps4 players hopefully they fix it. nice review as always taylor.
Yeah PS5 is the way to go. Thanks for watching!

Yeah some developers just don't have the budget or talent for better visuals I guess.
It's not a big company... You guys excuse this in the case of the "Trails" games.. do better.
Sounds like Corpse Party crossed with Persona.
Not a bad comparison, just not quite as dark as corpse party.
It's interesting how people have such different experiences. A different review I watched found the game to be extremely grindy, which is what put me off
Yeah definitely a little grindy at times but I still had some fun with it.
4:35 the chess pieces, them customize pawns? Okay then
This game looks very similar to Lost Dimension on Vita. I’m currently playing that and really enjoying it. Hopefully they can patch some frame rate issues.
I think it’s the same developer! I’m hoping they patch it too.
If you wonder how it runs on switch, it's got basically a 3ds-like graphic. I've played the demo in portable, so maybe it gets a bit better docked on a tv. I've also tested the demo on a ps5, and sure that's the best option of all.
Maybe it's ps4 issue. I'm playing it on switch and haven't noticed it playing poorly.
Even on Switch it's smooth, how could they f up PS4? ... Guess it requires SSD to work.
I played the demo on switch and it was smooth for me
If you plan on getting it definitely check out a switch-specific review. The demo on PS4 was fine for me too but then later sections past the demo were where it ran poorly.
Does the game only take place in the school is what I want to know
Pretty much yeah. That and the battlefields. The whole plot is around you trying to escape the school.
It’s honestly not even that visually demanding. It should run way better than it does on PS4.
Thanks for the review, I think I'll put this on the back burner of my watch list for now, especially with Elden Ring right around the corner.
Smart!
One Huge problem...
Me: It's definitely gonna be the ps4 performance.
Nailed it 😎
Nice that your biggest complaint won't be applicable to me as I have a PS5 =)

this is weird because the game isn't even graphically intensive

This is definitely a game I've been wanting to check out. Hipefully there's a patch on the PS4 version sooner rather than later. Also, another game I might be picking up soon, that just released, is Edge of Eternity.
There’s a lot of hype around Edge of Eternity!
Yeah, that's sort of what they did here, since it sounds like PS4 Pro looks fine.
I think a lot of people are in this space of wanting to just get a PS5 and not being able to find it and then thinking it’s not worth getting a Pro. Plus I think they stop manufacturing Pros but I could be wrong 🤔
1.01 in ps4 works fine
So ... it's runs like a dream on PS5, runs very well on PS4 Pro, and is playable on PS4 base console?
I believe they just have some PS4 optimization issues and they will fix it fast hopefully. Even Nintendo switch demo runs fine.
Ngl this game looks like it was to be a psvita game but got pushed to other platforms, it doesnt look bad but that frame rate need to ironed out tho.
Brah... you at least have to do stuff like let your madness meter hit max and other things that people are going to want to see during a review....
(the school dungeon is really bland)
You literally need grinding to progress as even if you are nearly max level, you still having difficulty finish the game.
My only favorite part with the game is the portrait and bust artwork is really good.
don't have a ps5, so chances are ill skip out on this one even though i had my eye on it. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for watching! Yeah it’s a bummer it runs so poorly on PS4.
the battle system reminds me of Quest 64 one, but better
I’m gonna play it on PS5 but that PS4 performance is bad lol hopefully there’s a day one patch or something for those players. Can’t even imagine how bad the Switch version will play
Oh man the Switch version is probably real rough! PS5 is definitely the way to go.
Umm the game runs well for me
Maybe there's something wrong with your copy
Lol. Classic cross gen games. Always runs worse on the old system
Yep, not good :/
Did you forget that there is a platform called PC? I don't think you ever mentioned it in your video.
Or maybe since it's NIS, so you thought that they won't release the game simultaneously on PC too? ...cough...cough ... TLoH ... cough ... cough...
When I initially looked up the platforms it didn’t list PC. My bad!
Imagine the setting is public school. Yah lack the edgy ness
