Yeah I totally contradicted myself with Soul Hackers 2 and Trails From Zero lol. Oops!
You also make no sense saying you hate Digimon survive because its a visual novel half the time and its boring ...
But Persona 5 (one of your favorite games) is also a visual novel half the time and (in my opinion) is boring.
@@PhoenIXPhantasies i could've sworn he said he hated it being a visual novel. My bad
Well, truth be told, Trails from Zero is a remake of an older game where that was more the norm. Soul Hackers 2 is a modern game, so I think it's not really a contradiction. But maybe something that should've been elaborated on a bit.
Another person did note that the dungeons and everything look similar, and the story was not exactly engaging. I guess that's what you really wanted to say.
When I saw that Diofield Chronicle is "Worth it" (having poor combat design) but Digimon is "not worth it" because it's boring (no futher explanations given) I understood that this video was "not worth it"
Digimon Survive is only for those players who like Visual Novels...others will not enjoy it and I think that's fine. I personally love sitting down and enjoying a chill game like that, which still has engaging characters and plots (imo), while not asking me to think too much about strategy.
reminds me quite a bit of Utawarerumono, and while that game is also fairly simple with strategy, there is a very clear passion put into the gameplay which enchances the experience imo.
For a series like digimon, to make a VN game of it, I think it's still really important to have a good balance of narrative and gameplay, since the monster collecting/raising aspect is one of the main selling points of the series.
Just like Triangle Strategy. A visual novel disguised as an rpg, but a really boring one.
Agreed, I think it's a fantastic visual novel it's just not really a JRPG at all, that portion of the gameplay is a minor side element compared to the VN segment.
I love digimon survive.
i like visual novel but doing repetitive searching room by room in detail is way too tedious
Soul Hackers 2 - "When you have to speed through your game, I feel like its just boring and you didn't do a good job designing it."
Trails from Zero- "While this may be an old game, they added some new features to make it shockingly playable. They added a turbo mode to speed things up."
That's quite the double standard there.
Yet another reason why you should take these videos with a grain of salt.
People take too much stock in reviews and opinionated videos these days.
I think we all saw that, the difference is that one of these two games is a modern RPG from a big studio (Atlus) and the other is a 2010 PS Vita game from a tiny studio that has never employed more than about 70 people. Zero was built the way it was due to the limitations of the hardware it originally ran on, Soul Hackers 2 doesn't have that limitation.
Also, one of these games has Lloyd, Tio, Ellie, Randy, Estelle, Joshua, Arios, Rixia, Cecile, Noel and Fran, Killing Bear, Anton, and a whole list of memorable, well-written characters, and the other one, well, doesn't have that.
@@SuperSupersoda Personally Cold Steel has ruined the entire series for me so I can't just see myself playing Zero knowing it all leads up to that. Or worse, knowing this is happening the same time as Cold Steel.
@@charlescaulkins8306 Takes all types to make the world then. I loved CS 1 and 2, and haven't yet played 3 and 4 because I'm waiting for Azure to come out and to play that one first, but I'm really looking forward to finishing CS. I loved every trails game I played, and I consider it a definitive JRPG experience. Yeah, the story-telling is a bit cliche, no doubt there, but as Vita said in CS 1: "Cliches are cliches for a reason, right?"
What in particular, if I might ask, did you dislike about it so much? I understand that everyone's different, and we all have different tastes. I know people who love the Star Wars sequels, for instance, which I absolutely hate with a burning passion. I'm always curious to know what it was that turned people off to a story.
Nice video, man! I'm currently playing Triangle Strategy, it's really great! I didn't really expect it would grab me as much as it did. Most SRPGs just end up disappointing me because they don't measure up to FFT, but Triangle Strategy is able to capture some of that FFT feeling, but also just going off in it's own direction and doing something unique, so soon I wasn't really comparing them anymore.
I’ll be honest I found triangle strategy…not really that good. I wish there were some customization in classes. Like if you ever played the trials of mana remake, you can split you class into two and have slight different abilities. Also the characters, especially the 4 mains ones, are boring as all get out. I don’t understand jrpg’s obsession with boring main characters.
@@cbmatty9262 honestly I loved most of the characters when I played, their little side stories really helped flesh them out and made me really struggle whenever the paths diverged
@@sushi287 I should definitely finish, honestly I didn’t get all that far
Awww I actually liked Soul Hackers 2 and Monark LOL I couldn't get into Stranger Of Paradise or the DioField Chronicles :( even though I was originally hyped for the latter. Triangle Strategy was the FFT Advance/A2 successor I've been waiting for 😭 It's probably my game of the year.
Hey glad you enjoyed them! I’m not the end all be all opinion :)
@@TheGamingShelf for sure! It's interesting how everyone's tastes differs :3
What Do you mean aww? If you enjoyed it, thats what matters.
@@CrimRui For sure, I respect everyone's tastes in games even if I don't agree, but I can still be slightly disheartened that someone else didn't see the beauty/fun in a game I enjoyed :P That doesn't mean I feel bad that I liked it when others didn't lol that's all I meant
Love Trails from Zero and excited for Trails of Azure. Will definitely get the platinum trophy once I have the time and energy to play again.
One team makes Persona 5 and that team is making another game right now that.
Not every Atlus game is going to be p5.
Scarlet and Violet are not nearly as bad as you’re making them out to be, lol
Yes, the framerate is disappointing but outside of that it’s the best Pokémon game we’ve got since gen 5 so it’s kinda not a great review to hinge so much on so little (though, frustrating) while completely ignoring every positive aspect of the game
Pokemon fans never cease to amaze me on how they defend subpar quality games.
The game has crashing issues, constant FPS drops bad it can stutter and some people have reporter issues falling through the ground in extended playtime.
I actually really loved Monark. The graphics weren’t the best, and the game doesn’t adequately explain its systems…but I guess that’s just not something that bothers me all that much.
I dunno, it was a lot more mature with the anime themes than anime tends to like to be, and I found the cast super engaging.
Yeah, everyone totally can have their own opinion and I really appreciate this channel, but I also finished Diofield tonight, 27 hours total got me through every mission and side quest and it was so repetitive at the end.
I think with Monark, Diofield, and some of these AA games, it just is one where everyone will like one of them for whatever reason, so don't just listen to the gaming shelf (or even me).
I also loved monark. I didn't see any performance issues on the PS5 tbh. Maybe the switch one was bad for performance? I don't buy jRPGs for switch (unless they're exclusives) for that reason. 😅
The great thing about games are is that everyone will not have the same experience. Fate/Extra scored pretty low when it released but I loved it so much I even played the sequel in Japanese since it wasn't released in English. On the other hand, I quit Disgaea, a game who's story and character design I loved, after 5 hours.
@@pandapandatk yeah switch version have some frame rate problems, but only on walking around school,on battle i didnt notice that
@@pandapandatk He played it on PS4. He mentioned it in his video "Monark is INEXCUSABLE in 2022". He did mention that he played a little on PS5 and it ran fine there.
Nah, Soul Hackers 2 and Digimon Survive are good. Not perfect, but good.
I hate how much crap digimon survive is getting. I love it. Great story. Great characters. And I love the simple combat. It feels great to immerse myself in that world and hours and hours go by and I don’t even notice.
Where are you going that craps on digimon survive? I've seen nothing but praise until this video.
@@laststep56 I’ve seen quite a few channels say it was trash.
@@nicktendo8451 I'll believe you for the stake of argument but you can love it regardless of what others say. Can't say I disagree with the take here personally.
@@laststep56 most people are trashing it for having "too many cutscenes".
Imo, its just that people can be fucking idiots sometimes and stick to some big youtuber arguments like if they are some kind of god.
Survive is pretty good, and i im glad at least one of these "kids franchises" went this dark, not to mention that the characters are well writen, making you feel for the characters (sad, angry, etc..).
Just wish the combat and customization were a bit deeper, as well as the player having a bit more control over the plot, it really angers me that games still do the "you won the battle, but sucks to be you who picked the wrong path and you still lose" kind of story.
Wanna kill somebody in my party? Fine, but make it a challenge, if they die its because i suck at the game and couldnt save them, not because i picked a route and now even if i win i still lose...
I didn't have any issues with monark, the combat was amazing, there were not any lag spikes (for me, I can understand maybe some other people will have this problem). The only problem I have with this game is that the dungeon exploring can be boring at times because of the BGM (which is really weird coming from the people that made The Caligula effect 1 and 2 which have absolute bangers while you explore the dungeon). The boss themes are a whole another story, even to this day, almost 5 months since clearing the game, I still have those on repeat on youtube.
I respect your opinion but me personally i enjoy pokemon scarlet and violet dispite bugs but I would love to try acouple games on your list
I think the expectation that Valkyrie is one genre is coming from people that seem to have forgotten what those games are. Every valkyrie game is wildly different from each other in terms of gameplay and presentation, Elysium is just the first time they're doing real time combat, that's really the only difference. There is no "established" Valkyrie throughline. Star Ocean has that for Tri-Ace but Valkyrie has always been experimental.
Totally agree. I enjoyed Elysium and might go back to plat. I started with Lenneth on PSP, then Elysium, and currently playing Silmeria. Awesome series and very different play styles.
I love XC3, and I really loved XC2 as well, such beautiful games!
Personally i reallly enjoyed survive but i agree with you on triangle strategy and the diofield chronicle
Awesome video. 👍When I bored XeonBlade Chronicles 3, I thought I was going to get bored. But at the end of the game I have played it. 120 hours. And I still wanted to play more. I have more fun in this game than God of War Ragnarok and bayonetta 3. This is literally the best game of the year. I can't find anything else. In 2022 That has so much content.❤
This video idea was genius! Honestly, I would love if you did a video like this maybe twice a year to help contextualize all the new JRPG releases.
I’ll try to do it more next year!
Hard disagree on both Soul Hackers 2 and Digimon Survive. I honestly think everybody should play them.
I finished Violet a couple weeks ago, and not once did I have any of these major bugs and glitches besides the obligatory frame drops(that aren’t even that bad to begin with). Is there something wrong with my copy of Violet?
No. You're just a fan boy ignoring all the issues.
@@arrowknee7356 Or... they didn't run into these issues. I know, crazy concept.
i think i would have liked digimon survive more as a pure visual novel
the battles feel rly unbalanced sometimes. i played on normal difficulty and there were bosses i almost oneshotted, on the other hand there were bosses which were just unfair doing almost twice as much dmg as my digimon had hp + having crazy evasion and mobility on top.
Even though I disagree with some I 100% dig that you made a list not only featuring positive takes but negative ones too for games this year. I feel like some creators go out of their way to stay blindly positive on every video no matter the title so it feels refreshing to see someone recommending which games to steer away from on top of which ones to prioritize.
It's still nuts to me that we have trails from zero localized officially. I hope more jrpg fans can look past the dated graphics and dive into probably one of the best casts and stories JRPGs has to offer.
I definitely get plenty of hate but I try to keep it as honest as possible!
I just completed all the storylines in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet and I must say it’s an incredible game. The music alone makes it worth it! Yeah sure it lags here and there but it wasn’t enough for me to put it down and move on; in fact, I couldn’t put it down! 10/10 would recommend!
Please no. I bought it too and cannot plead people enough to stay away. It's basically the fallout 76 of Nintendo games and the only real difference is that the fans don't care how bad it really is. The more people who buy it, the more gamefreak will get the message that it's acceptable to launch a game in that condition and if it was a game from any other series, no one would accept it. Please stop throwing your money at gamefreak like the futurama meme everytime a pokemon game is released, regardless of quality.
@@kliffordtbrsrpg2745 Scarlet/Violet definitely needs work, but I still had 100+ hour of fun so far, in spite of the issues. Autosave stopped me from losing data when it crashed, and the 5fps background characters dont bother me as much as it does some people. While I wouldn't recommend people who like Pokemon to avoid the games, I also definitely wouldn't tell them to pick it up. As the vid said, wait for a steep discount (Like that'll ever happen LOL) or wait for some fixes.
One thing I've found is that it performs unbelievably better in handheld mode. I almost always play handheld anyway, and didn't see any of the framerate dips or crashes that were being reported, just some minor pop in and connection weirdness in raids. But I played docked just to see and the difference is staggering.
No wonder all the reviewers and RUclipsrs expressed dismay since they are exclusively playing in docked mode to be able to record/stream.
Despite the technical issues, it's still the most fun I've had in Pokémon since ORAS (played every mainline game since Red/Blue), except maybe Arceus.
@@kliffordtbrsrpg2745 Last time I remembered, Fallout 76 was riddled with microtransactions and the game itself was completely fucked and unplayable. S&V isn’t anywhere near those levels in the slightest, and it CERTAINLY ISN’T Cyberpunk at all.
@brawler5760 I had fallout 76 from day one and it was more playable and looked far better had more thought put into the world than s&v I know the microtranstions sucks but atleast that can be ignored, s&v has no thought and effort put into the world its just plain and boring the game lacks exploration has no remember able location's and is empty and a buggy mess
Pokemon scarlet and violet are pretty great games. Yeah there are a few bugs but in my playthrough I only saw a few and it didn't affect anything. Yeah I could see into the ground during battles a few times. Oh well, the game is still worth playing in my opinion.
I played both Elden Ring and Ragnarök this year but I have to admit that I enjoyed Pokémon Scarlet more than those two. Ragnarök was a beautiful journey tho. It was breathtaking.
For me it’s more the slow down, the fact that there’s random crashes is really awful from such a massive company but also having so many frame drops that around 10-20% of the game is slow down and lag makes playing it just feel awful, especially with how brainless the combat still is.
I have really loved Scarlet and Violet myself. Sure it could have been much better ie not removing set mode (why gamefreak?), allowing exp share to be turned off, opponents should use items (2 heals and hold items), not sending their tera last, glitches, and frame rate; however, it has the best story I've seen in a mainline pokemon game period, I actually felt attached to some characters, terastalizing is dope af which easily beats out d/g-max and z-moves adding a new level of strategy, and is quite long. I quite enjoyed my play through and I even plan on trying online and doing a wonderlocke at some point 😁
Otherwise a great list. Definitely gonna check out the Dio Field Chronicle and give Triangle Strategy a go.
You speak your mind dude and I admire that. Not all RPGs are have equal worth.
They really aren’t! I think I’ve become more critical of this as I get older and have less time to play games so I have to be careful which ones I give my time to.
I could not disagree more on your not worth it list. If anything I liked some of those more than your worth it list. (Stranger of Paradise was God awful).
I absolutely love digimon survive, so big disagree with you on that. The story is really good and your choices matter, you can literally kill characters with your choices. I think what you said can be misleading since almost everything you said was down to it just not being your kind of game vs what it actually does offer people and letting them make the choice for themselves.
Everyone just got their own tastes of the games they wanna play, no hate
Love this ❤️
Playing Pokémon Scarlett now and having a blast! I haven’t noticed any bugs or glitches, just the occasional frame drop (which doesn’t hinder the game).
Tactics Ogre reborn I would definitely put into the worth it category as well, they put a ton of work into the remaster of it (and it shows).
So glad to hear you’re having fun with Pokémon! It looks fun when it runs right.
Dont worry they'll fix it sooner or later..
Xbc3 is NOT worth it. I regret buying it. Slow combat system, chapter 6 and 7 are horrible and kill the pace of the entire game, worst boss in all rpg, worse boss fight, and the ending is a let down
How is the ending a let down?
this helps so much, you should totally do one of these every 3 or 4 months and a yearly one like this
To sped up a game is not necessarily an indication of a bad game as many more games have that feature for faster turn-based combat and not all players got time for that slow pace.
Diofield is one of the worst gameplay in a JRPG ever, such an incredible bad designed combat system.
I'm not gonna pretend the new Pokémon games are PERFECT, but the issues are being CRAZY exaggerated. People are making it sound like it's the worst game ever. I've had no major glitches, and the only framerate issue I've had is in one particular area. And even then, it isn't super common. The only issue I've actually had is some loading times are long
Monark only worth it if sold for less than 15 dollars. Otherwise don’t bother with it.
Valkyrie elysium is very boring after a while. The combat was good but just terrible everything else. Story so basic and unrewarding, repetitive enemies, ugly landscapes, boring and most basic skill trees, pointless collectibles that add nothing to story or areas, little weapon variety. It’s just a game that feels half finished. Guess that’s why they gave lenneth for free with it. Not work any price guys. Don’t buy.
Digimom survive is 100%worth it if you actually know what you're going into because a lot of people were under the misconception that this was going to be a straight battle type of game with little story.
Ehh, I really disagree with a lot here. Digimon Survive is a great game for fans of visual novels. I wouldn’t even consider it a JRPG. To say it’s not worth it doesn’t do it justice because it really is a good game for the right audience. And the same goes for Pokémon: for fans of Pokémon, it’s an amazing game with tons of improvements and quality of life changes. It’s such a fun experience and a very welcome change to the usual Pokémon formula.
Lmao. Did you switch Diofield and MONARK by accident? Despite looking a hell of a lot better. Diofield is kind of just.... Meh.
I think the performance was a you issue. I and a couple of my friends had zero issues with it.
I loved Monark, is it my favorite game of all time? NO, but is soooo good... I played it on PC so I didn't had any performance problems.
Maybe people comparing the combat of Stranger of Paradise to Dark Souls might be ok on the base game.
The endgame however, becomes more of an arcade game that feels like a looter diablo style and it opens up a lot of customization.
It's not really for everyone, but it's really good if that's what you are looking for.
I can't really say I agree with Pokémon, personally I bought the game Day 1, I've been playing ever since, for the first time I was able to complete the Dex on a Main Line game, I did not get any bugs, the framerate was fine even on day 1, so yeah... If anyone wants an honest opinion it's one of the best Pokémon games since Black and White.
Digimon Survive, as bland as the gameplay looks and my dislike for the tactics genre, I still kind of want it because everything else seems interesting.
That said, it's a game that shouldn't exist. Any time a base game is scrapped and started from scratch, odds are its going to go downhill. Not every restarted game is like that, but there are enough... (if you know of any games that were restarted from scratch that are actually good, let me know)
I recommend highly before buying Xenoblade 3 to play Xenoblade definite edition and Xenoblade 2 , Xenoblade 3 will have a bigger impact on you if you do
this is a cool idea taylor you should do more of these when you can. some of these i agree with and some i respectfully disagree with but i like it anyway.
Depending on how this video does I may have to! I hate dunking on games but I like helping you guys save money and playing great games :)
@@TheGamingShelf i know but hey when a game is not good its not good simple as that. like you said if it saves my wallet and helps us discover the truly great games then im down🤣🤣
Digimon survive was boring ? Sorry but I really enjoyed this game from being to end. The story was great and the characters well written but I do agree than the combats were too classic though...
I have to disagree about soul hackers 2 and strangers of paradise. SOP bored me and SH2 gets too much flak for its dungeons even though p3 and p4s dungeons weren't all that great but the gameplay was awesome.
Big difference is that P3 and P4 came out 3 console generations ago. Much more forgives me back then
@Lucas The Phantom Thief they didn't even make a switch port. The game totally would have run on switch lol. And I would have thought that even without Persona 5 too. It just looks basic.
@@TheGamingShelf i think we gave p3 and p4 too little flak when they came out since compared to other ps2 smt games before it, they defo are budget titles
@@TheGamingShelf Nocturne and DDS had amazing dungeon designs. P3 and P4 dungeon designs are just horrendous in comparison.
Soul Hackers 2 dungeons are nowhere near as bad as Persona 3 or 4 dungeons
I wanted to like Digimon Survive so much and I waited so long for it's release. But the writing is so unbelievable boring that it killed the whole game for me. :(
Stranger of Paradise is a game that TOTALLY surprised me. I really got into it and ended up loving the game despite being kind of put off by the initial trailer and demo.
Awesome! Which classes if you have the most fun with?
Scarlet and Violet is one of the best games in the franchise, and the issues are negligible at best
I would like to add Star Ocean: the divine force as a worth it buy .. such a great come back for this series
It was only ok in opinion, story was partially engaging, combat was mixed overall for me. Some characters were interesting. Strong candidate to pick up on a sale though, can't say was worth full price.
Soul hackers 2 is underrated, it's a bit of a acquired taste and if you're an smt fan you will probably enjoy it. The later dungeons are awesome, and the character dungeons are pretty fun if you're not expecting too much.
Just played it for a while and it I really got pulled in instantly.
Soul Hackers 2 is great people are just hating
People are obsessed with comparing everything atlus makes to persona. This will never be a persona game.
@@mildgod5353 Thank You 🙏🏾
Imagine saying not worth buying pokemon lol
The game is actually good stop the slander
Man I really want to play the trails games they look so good especially from a story/lore perspective
I have only played the first 3 games but I definitely recommend playing them.
For me Monark was my favorite February release, I tried the demo and enjoyed it and bought the game. I wasn't too keen on Diofield, I want to play it but after the demo I figure it's a wait until $20 or $30 at most on ps5.
I'll be honest, Persona as a great franchise as it is it ruined traditional RPGs, now everytime it isn't as easy or fast paced is automatically a bad game, anyone who played the original Soul Hackers knows that the sequel while it improves upon it, it also maintains what's important about a Soul Hackers games, sadly many people just want a Persona clone.
I would say that Persona raised the bar. Players expect more from their RPGs now, for better or worse.
Digimon survive is not an rpg, it's a visual novel with some rpg elements and if i'm not wrong Bandai promoted the game as a visual novel.
And is a good one
Strangers of Paradise is LITERALLY NIOH reskinned..im not sure if you ever played NIOH but its the same game combat and mechanic wise. I was shocked that you didn't even mention NIOH as being part of it..
I've played it, but to me SoP is way more forgiving. Nioh is stupid hard by comparison. Plus you have party members here and more clas options than Nioh.
I really like xenoblade but I also like pokemon s/v so not sure what to think about this
I wish there had been an easy/casual mode for Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Very challenging gameplay that requires twitch muscle memory isn't as fun as more hack n slash. I'm definitely interested in DioField Chronicles, it's pretty much ignored by RUclipsrs so I'm glad you mentioned it. I definitely agree with you that Triangle Strategy is totally worth it! I loved my playthrough and can actually see myself going back and get the golden ending.
But there is? There's a story mode in Strangers of Paradise and a way to make the story mode even easier if you want it.
@@faustineli375 Oh man thank you for that piece of information. I figured since it was made by Team Ninja who is responsible for Nioh and Ninja Gaiden, that it was just default hard with no easy option. OK, now I might check it out.
I'll crack Survive later but I do think some are too hard on Soul Hackers 2. It's fun game with problems but I do think people were expecting to much. Also, Monark has more than performance issues it is a giant grind fest.
Thank u
Yeah, it was meant to be low budget and it turned out really good considering! I enjoyed Soul Hackers 2
I was hoping to get the Valkyrie Profile feel with Valkyrie Elysium. Man that was a bust.
And another burn was Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. So much bug I just couldn't handle it anymore. My poor wallet was beating my head in for my idiocy.
Though Xenoblade Chronicle 3 was a breath of fresh air. Eunie was such an adorable doll. I totally love her.
Definitely agree regarding Valkyrie Elysium. Currently streaming it and the one word I would use to describe it is "bland". It's not a horrible game. It looks OK, plays OK, runs just fine on PC, but nothing about the game really grips you or stands out. I'll definitely finish it due to its short length, but I was really hoping for more from a game with the "Valkyrie" name attached to it.
It's Ashame as Valkyrie chronicles one and two are masterpieces
@@HollowRick unrelated, valkyria chronicles is not valkyrie
If it’s that bland and boring, then literally everything else on this list is so much better.
@@HollowRick You're confusing Valkyria Chronicles with Valkyrie's Profile.
If you call it bland then you clearly didn't play any Valkyrie game before because they're all equally as as you say bland. Especially Valkyrie previously she's always been bland, but you loved it before.
Team Ninja is a Japanese company and it does work alongside SE, so yes, Stranger of Paradise: FF Origin IS a JRPG.
Chained echoes by far was my favorite jrpg and was absolutely incredible
A jrpg is a JAPANESE role playing game. Chained Echoes is an Indy game made in Germany by one guy. It’s an rpg inspired by old jrpg’s but it’s not a jrpg.
I'm surprised octopath traveler wasn't on here
That game came out 3 years ago or did you mean triangle strategy?
I genuinely agree with most of what you have to say but I have to point out that you said Soul Hackers speed up mechanic was bad but you gave trails a positive for having a speed up mechanic. I like speed up mechanics in games but I feel like it kinda is hypocritical to say it's bad in one game but good in another!
THATS…a fair point lol.
Got Pokemon Violet-let me just say I'm loving it! Way more than Pokemon Shield! And I haven't really experienced any glitches? Maybe one or two? There was a frame drop here and there, but nothing game-breaking on my end! Don't regret buying it at full price one bit! Heck, I'm still on my first playthrough and can't wait to go through my second-and even, third! Really love pretty much every starter Pokemon this time around!
That’s awesome! I’m glad you’re having a good time with it
How do you even restart the game from the beginning? And also the only glitch that I’ve encountered was Miraidon getting stuck in its jumping animation if they fell a certain way, but at least the game has the courtesy of respawning you.
@@brawler5760 Hhhmmm, sorry don't actually know how to start the game over for a new playthrough. Still on my first, doing some extra side game content, beefing my other Pokemon up and just chillin in the world. You might have to look that up. I do know you probably have to have a certain way to do it-because ALL the other Pokemon games had a specific button combination to delete your current game file to start a new game file. In other words, you can't delete it easily! Its annoying, but its how they do it.
@@brawler5760 ,,
You go into the settings, and look for the saves files for the game. You can delete your files from a game on the account of your choice.
Xenoblade 3 was such a joy to play but my favorite RPG this year atleast was Triangle Strategy.
Strangers of paradise
Awful story.
Awful visuals
Good combat.
That gets a go and soul hackers no?
Really? SH2 wasn't stellar but SOP was so generic.
I'm starting to see a pattern with these game reviews
Oh my god, how did i missed a Trails series release, thank you for this roundup
I love how you stress the point of Scarlet/Violet being "below what is acceptable" rather than anything dealing with whether or not it's fun in the first place. Even if it worked fine, I'd still be disappointed, simply because of how minimal the improvements are from past games. It's open world now. That's it.
Compare that to the absolutely lazy animations, laughable lack of voice acting, subpar graphics, laughably anime story and writing (even if they did actually bother to put a plot in the game, it could very, VERY easily be better)...
Like, dude, this franchise is literally as old as I am. Why is it only just now trying to revisit the idea of putting in a plot beyond "fight the bosses, also stop the bad guy, also also world domination/destruction, also also also you have a rival with the personality of tap water in a beige room"
I was disappointed with DioField Chronicles myself, the concept felt amazing when I started but the challenge just isn't there, battles feel samey after a while.
Love this list. Just wish you had said which systems these are for.
" people shouldn't settle for mediocrity because we only have so much time to play games "
I know I probably paraphrased it , but I love what you said here. I've been making this my motto ever since I started living by myself, and I'm glad someone agrees with me
Xenoblade 3 (Plan to buy it, the collector edition was out of stock before I know it)
Digimon Survive (Got it few days ago in deep discount, I probably won't get it if this video was uploaded few days earlier)
Final Fantasy Origin, Stranger Paradise (Doesn't plan to buy it, I am bad at soulslike game)
Soul Hacker 2 (Plan to buy it, The collector edition was overpriced, so I didn't get it at release)
Monark (Got a Collector Edition, I like NISA. lol)
Chronicle of DioField (Plan to buy it, I like the demo but should be priced at $40)
Valkyria Elysium (Plan to buy it, I like the demo)
Trails From Zero (Got a Collector Edition, I like NISA. lol)
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (Doesn't plan to buy it,never play Pokemon games before)
Triangle Strategy (Bought It)
One thing I learned recently is that JRPGs are VERY cutscene heavy. Having stopped seriously playing games around the PlayStation era, I picked up Yakuza last week and in ten hours playtime I think I had control of the character for like maybe two of those hours 😅 still kind of fun though tbh
Persona 4 is a poster child for that. It's about two hours before the gameplay starts. A little after the first hour they let you think you're going to play, then they rope you in for another half hour or forty five minutes. But they're all very important minutes. If you don't pay attention for that whole bit, you won't understand what's going on in the game.
I beat stranger paradise final fantasy origins story in 20 hours at launch and never looked back. That includes me grinding every class to max. It was very disappointing to me being a major fan of nioh and its insane amount of content. Has the dlc really added that much content?
Pokemon scarlet and violet are worth it
But...Live a Live!? 😭
It will have it's time! Stay tuned ;)
I think this is a fair list. Ppl have already pointed out the contradiction between your treatment of Soul hackers 2 adding speed options as a negative and trails from zero adding turbo mode being a positive. I enjoyed Soul Hackers 2 for the most part, but it 100% played like a slow burn after a while. I spent most of my time using the speed ability anyway to move faster, but it didn't have options to skip animations in fights like some other games. I would put it on auto-battle through the generic enemy turns to make it go faster. I liked the story, despite it being relatively small/simple, but the ending was lackluster imo. I've played many SMT games, not just persona, and this one was maybe a 5/10 for me. It would have been a 6 if it had the QOL features of the recent update when I played.
I have some of the “worth it” and “not worth it” titles on that list! lol. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was the first and only title in the series that hooked me in and had me finish it! I’d have to say, it’s one of the very few JRPG’s that I actually enjoyed doing sidequests for. I’m two months late to the party here, but it was my underdog GotY against those heavy-hitters!
I actually really liked this type of video. A really good way to know what is worth spending my time on.
In the start i was not buying pokemon violet but after saw a serie from one of faviroute youtubers, i changed my mind bucause the is yes really good also another reason i buyed is because it's talk about bullying something i suffered so many times
in my opnion i gonna say again MY OPNION is pokemon violet is worth of buying i didn't have any problem who destroyed my gameplay, the problems i had actually made me laugh because they are funny in some way
And no i not defending nintendo
also i from Brazil so if have any error, understand i not speak english i speak Portugues(Brazil)
Diofield chronicles was a massive fail for me. The story is on a grand scale. The things you’re doing and accomplishing - it’s all on a grand scale, what you domeffect the lives of entires cities.
Yet. 4 character party in a tactical game. What. The. Fuck.
That kills immersion so terribly I couldn’t see the relations of my actions and the results. It diss-communicated every event that occurred.
In what universe am I suppose to believe 4 people can take a fucking army?
Preordered every one of these games and only havent beaten 4: Xenoblade 3, Trails from Zero, Stranger of Paradise, and Triangle Strategy. Ironically almost all the ones he said was good lol I disagree with Monark though really enjoyed the game but then I do love me some dark stories like SMT etc. Soul Hackers 2 though entirely agree with what a piece of garbage from Atlus...
1. Xenoblade 3 - Gonna buy it soon
2. Digimon Survive - at minimum 65% off before I buy
3. Stranger of Paradise - got it on sale super cheap
4. Soul Hackers 2 - got it day one, story seemed okay but wow holy genericness. Super disappointed but I'll go back to it. I do feel that even if I end up loving it in the end I'll probably somewhat be settling. You can just tell it's not on Persona's level. Maybe it was never gonna be but I expected a really good game.
5. Monark - got it day 1 and yea... Wtaf is with these fucking games that don't run
6. Diofield - got it at launch and didn't play much, I'm a huge JRPG and RTS fan and it seemed like it was something I'm gonna like just didn't click right away.
7. Valkyrie Elysium - another 65%+ off or nothing game. Can't stand when devs add another established title and it's not at all like said title. Deep deep sale like he said.
8. Trails from Zero - got it on launch and it seems so cool. Everything they did to it seems well made and it isn't even a full price game. Sequel in March, gotta start it asap.
9. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet - What I should do? Wait for 50% off. What I really should do? Not buy it at all. What I will do? But it at 25% off :/ I get that I'm part of the problem guys.
10. Triangle Strategy - my GOTY. Incredible game. Simply awesome and for me at the very least a 9/10. New game+ ramps up the difficulty even on the same difficulty. It's a frigging sick game, don't sleep on it due to the whiners who say "too much dialogue".
One thing about pokemon scarlet and violet is a lot of the glitches was staged with hackers hacking the game and forcing certain glitches to happen. Not saying that all of the glitches was just that some of the more outrageous ones was in fact fake.
Honestly, this doesn't surprise me. I could easily see that happening for *many* games.
@@Cuprite1024 Yeah, I hated to see that there are some people that will willingly hurt the reputation of a company just for petty reasons like trying to see how easy it is to break the game by removing certain things. Not that gamefreak is not to blame for some things tho but it really did not have to go down like this.
I agree with this list as I am an nut for ALL rpg/jrpg's.... I buy almost everything for my collection and play them to a point. The bonus is some of the games that fall short or under the radar sometimes go for insane amount of $$$ down the road as availability/collectability becomes scarce even though I don't trade or sell my games. One game I picked up on a whim even though it is not a rpg/jrpg was Godzilla for $19.... when I read the reviews I almost returned it but instead just kept it and didn't open/play it.... hehe $$$$ CHA-CHING!
Monark was was a good game. Personally I didn't have performance issues and I played it on Switch. The game does have Ps2 era graphics, but if graphics are none of your concern it's a nice game to pick up. It would be no different than picking up an old jrpg like Persona 3 today. Monark has a good story, great music, the English voice acting is great, I enjoyed the puzzles and characters, and combat is a nice change from the usual. The only thing holding it back are the graphics, and amount of grinding needed to catch characters up at certain points. As for it being worth 60 bucks, I'd say not currently. This is because it's been about a year since it was released. I rarely pay full price for games anymore since most games suck now, but the marketing and music sold me on Monark. There is a demo for the game, so I encourage trying it before skipping it least. I've learned lessons from trusting other people's opinions. Many said Indivisible was a great game, but it's actually pretty bad to mediocre. I believe it only received great reviews because it caters to a certain community.
As a huge fan of the Xenoblade series, I have to say X3 is by far the best in the series. It’s a masterpiece
W opinion
I agree...
As someone who have finished part 2 and wasn’t the biggest fan, your comment makes me reconsider buying it. XBC games are a huge commitment of 100+ hours to beat the story, and part 2 gameplay was alright but the story was boring and very forgettable imo. Liked the cast of characters, but the story was a snooze fest. One day when it’s on discount I’ll check it out and see if you guys are just blind fanboys, or have an unbiased good taste in video games.
That was thr worst rpg I played last year. Really? Lol. How do you like it when all you did chapter 6 is run around and grab metal parts? Then in chapter 7 you run around origin just to get to the core to fight the worst one dimensional boss in all rpg? A horrible final fight too. And the ending was such a let down. Combat was slow...idk man I couldn't do it
@@ElliotScottDating to each their own. I don’t mind fetch quests all that much and I loved the story from start to finish. Personally, I thought it was very moving. The combat was also engaging imo when you got the hang of the chain attacks and using certain members I. The correct order to maximize potent damage. I can see how it’s not for everyone though, hopefully you’ll find one you love as much as I do XC3 :)
i felt the same about valkryie asylum, boring, bland and dull, i didn't even finish the demo, deleted it promptly, i'm disappointed with soul hackers 2 and i've been patient with that one waiting for a decent sale, despite all the hype selling this off as a persona contender it's not what i expected from this game tbh
i'm not a big fan with strategy RPGs so most of these recommendations i would have to pass on, that final fantasy dark soul game looks alright but i could already feel the frown that the combat is like that, i guess the only thing i can do is dig down my backlog and wait for some of these titles to end up on plus extra soon enough
What was it with 2022 and jrpgs being set in medieval or industrial Europe? Which always meant an all-white cast if there was no character customization and even when there was.
Was it because of Game of Thrones?
Man, I was so disheartened looking at the sea of JRPGS coming out last year and seeing next to none that didn't have a world that I wouldn't exist in. Like 0 in this list except for Strangers in Paradise with mini-Barrett and jank-ass Pokemon. Yippie.
Well here's hoping 2023 will fare better in that. *screams in Final Fantasy 16*
I strongly disagree wirh Soul hackers 2. Compared to other JRPGs it is amazing. Yes some parts duck but it is very well worth
Second. MONARK was running very solid qith 4k60fps on my high end pc. But otherwise it is unfortunately so god damn exhausting, so I agree.
But on other games I do agree.
I let scarlet and violet slide for the fact that gamefreak dropped 5 titles in the span of one year.
Uhhh, what’re the 5 titles besides S&V and Legends Arceus? ‘Cause I’m sure UNITE was developed by a different team.
As a lover of JRPGs and also tactical RPGs I couldn't disagree more about Triangle Strategy. I mean yeah it's a serviceable game but that's honestly about all I can say about it, it's short and kind of shallow and the story feels like an uninspired attempt to recreate the feel of Final Fantasy Tactics.
Everything else I mostly agree with though, and while I had a lot of fun personally with Pokemon SV it's going to forever disappoint me as a game that could've been fantastic and just ended up kind of okay.
I've tried and tried to get into stranger of paradise. Something just doesn't click with me for that game. I just wanted Nioh: Final Fantasy
The DioField Chronicle is soooo good....I loved the characters as well...mine favorite being Rias/Waltaquin!!!
She's the favorite for most players, also, both of them are the most broken characters in the game.
Its really curious that you didn't like Digimon Survive but liked Triangle Strategy, they are very similar in terms of weaknesses. Both have a good story, plagued by terrible written characters and awful narrative. Both games have way more dialogue than combat.
The only rising point for Triangle Strategy is that the combat is way better, but unfortunately is meaningless, since you either need to be on the same level or 2 less as your enemies, since underneath it the game creates an artificial difficulty where it is literally impossible to beat them (if you play on hard) unless you level up, and as soon as you get inside those levels, the combat is extremely easy. Very bad game design in my opinion. If you want to win fights below those levels, prepare to cheese them, which feels no interactive at all and it's one of the most boring things I have ever played.
This plus the no side content, the mind battles are boring af since you really have "trouble" doing the one at your level, the rest become useless as soon as your surpass the level they specified. Then you can die in combat, and still keep the exp, which feels very unrewarding.
Between my favourite games of all time are Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance/2 and Tactics Ogre, but this game is just a mockery of what made those games great. In fact, Tactics Ogre Reborn is still miles better than Triangle Strategy in terms of strategy, characters and narrative.
