turn based jrpg games are not bad but the random encounters in every few steps are annoying af so i prefer to action jrpg & strategy jrpg like fire emblem, monster hunter, souls series, dragon's dogma, and zelda series
Disgaea, Persona, Final Fantasy, Trails are series that have brought me tears, laughs, and many other emotions. Those are my peak but there are just so many great JRPGs and not enough time to play them all lol
Disgaea is a series of games I on paper really enjoy. I then play one and realize how insane they are and I have fun for 20 hours then put it down and never go back because they are GRINDY as hell.
Great picks but it hurts a little a lot of ppl mentioning only Persona and sleeping over Megami Tensei as a whole series. Especially over SMT, the best freakin' series I've ever played in videogames
For me, I'd say Final Fantasy, Trails series, Persona, Tales, Kingdom Hearts, Ys, Ni No Kuni, and Star Ocean. I would include Dragon Quest but I've only played 11 and that was pretty good.
My personal 1 favorite will be Xenoblade series, the combat mechanics and graphics are just amazing, ever since I tried the 2nd XBC 2 I became in love with the franchise and storyline, I’m eager to try the 1st one as well ever since I’ve played the 3rd one as well, I wish we get a remake of Xenosaga, and Xenoblade Chronicles X on switch soon, I’m curious to try more of these, Xenogears looks great too
Thx for this video! Really make me miss the days when I had a lot of free time to play jrpgs. Now with work it is getting harder and harder to focus on the story or get time to play any game whatsoever. Persona 4 golden on the vita is still the best for me! The social links are the best in that game in my opinion.
I know what you mean! If this wasn't my job there'd be no way I could play them all. That's why I try to be extra critical in my reviews. I know you guys have limited time and money and only want you playing the very best.

@@TheGamingShelf Surprisingly tough question with it needing to be a franchise/series and you listed many of mine haha. I would say Front Mission, Grandia, Suikoden and since Octopath counts (I love it too) I’m going to say Valkyrie Profile.
Out of all of these series, I think I have 75% of them in my backlog 😅 doesn’t help that JRPGs tend to be extremely lengthy so it’s definitely gonna take a while for me to get through them. On another note, my favourite JRPG franchise is definitely Rune Factory, Xenoblade Chronicles and Atelier. All pretty different from one another but offers great games in their series.

What about Suikoden? Those first 2 games are masterpieces. The remaster is coming out soon, so if you haven't played them that will be a good time to do so. Persona is my favorite but Suikoden is second.
Great list! For me it's something like 1. Trails 2. Persona 3. Xenoblade 4. Ys 5. Fire Emblem 6. Tales 7. SMT 8. Valkyria Chronicles 9. Monster Hunter (if that counts) 10. Final Fantasy
I've been wanting to check out the Trails series, but I've heard that a lot of them are direct sequels to other games in the series and you will be kind of lost if you jump in the middle. I'm not really interested in playing 20 year old games. Is there a Trails game available on PS5 that would be a good starting point?
@@warpuppy4528 you can start with Trails of cold steel 1 and see if you like the game from there. But i have to warn you that cold steel 1 is arguably the weakest game in the series and starting with trails in the sky is always what a trails fan will tell you 😅
@@valk5041 If cold steel is the worst in the series I don't think I would be giving Trails a fair shot if I started with that. While I do prefer modern games and Trails in the Sky was released in 2004, I do enjoy aviation themes so that sounds like Sky is the best starting point, assuming its available in the playstation store.
Great list! My list is: 1. Trails 2. Shin Megami Tensei/Persona 3. Final Fantasy 4. Ys 5. Pokemon 6. Xenoblade 7. Fire Emblem 8. Kingdom Hearts 9. Mother/Earthbound 10. Atelier I am on the fence about whether Dark Souls counts as a JRPG series, if it does it's very high on this list
The ones that satisfied me most in story, gameplay and music: KH series, Trails in the Sky trilogy, Solatorobo, and Tales of Abyss. Honorable mentions: TWEWY and Poke'mon Black. Games that I feel had some potential: Bravely Default and Xenoblade Chronicles 1.
This is the first Top 10 RPG list I've seen Rune Factory in😭. I'm glad there are people out there that like and appreciate the game that got me into RPGs
I started watching this video after I finished your newest one on the Saga franchise. Here's my top 10 series: 1. Persona/SMT 2. Yakuza/Like A Dragon 3. Dragon Quest 4. Xenoblade 5. Final Fantasy 6. Trails 7. Ys 8. Atelier 9. Blue Reflection 10. Star Ocean
Great list. I probably would have most of those on my list. I have no experience with Pokemon and Rune Factory, so I would swap in The Trails series (especially the Sky and Crossbell arcs) and Suikoden.
My favorite franchise that didn't make your list is Wild ARMs. The first three were great, but for me the pinnacle was 4, with its completely new battle system, great character development and emotionally impactful ending.
My two favorite JRPG Series are Shadow Hearts. Shadow Hearts has a very addictive battle mechanic, interesting story and background (alternative version of real world), and I cannot wait for its spiritual success- Penny Blood.
Genuine question since you like persona so much, have you played shin megami tensei? It does lack the social elements that a lot of persona fans love but i genuinely think that most people who love persona should try it, at least for me both series complement each other and make them more than the sum of their parts
I did love FF series, but I think only up to 3. After that, it has that action gauge and come to hate it since I feel like I am being pressured to choose the action in a turn-based. To be fair I haven't played the recent release since I only play on my laptop and, the storage size for FF7 is staggering. But still, my favorite must be Suikoden. Growing up with original PlayStation, Suikoden series (especially II and V) is the only game that I think have beaten more than 3 times, and is the first game that I beat. Even with my limited English at that time, I still got hooked with the story and it became my standard for the story in RPG. Hope with the release of the remake, Konami will recognize it's popularity and continue the series.
When people say they expect more from Pokemon, I think its pretty reasonable. Xenoblade 3 and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet released in the same year and the quality difference is staggering. They need to do better.
Different devs and timetable. I'm all for cutting back on releases and taking their time in-between each release and having other 2nd party studios to help out. But it's basically Nintendo's c.o.d. therefore the quality isn't going to be there, especially when stacked against Xenoblade.
FINAL FANTASY FOREVER ❤ It will be my lifelong fave !, with a unmatched streak of undeniable timless releases of masterpieces that shaped gaming as a whole from - FF6,7,8,9,10 & Tactics Also worth to mention FF4, jprg with the first real story and characterisation within the genre or even gaming FF12, which is underrated and you can see it's influences all over franchises like Xenoblade Chronicles or even DQ11 FF14 which has muliple masterpiece expansions and is the worlds greatest mmo with the best community ever FF7R which is a cinematic masterclass and one the best ps4 games while beeing one part of something even bigger & FF16 now which looks like it will define the ps5 lifecycle with it's release
FF helped define what Video Game RPG's are for me, but everything after 10 had been a continual disappointment to me sadly. 12 was fun until I got to the point that I had a set up enough Commands that I no longer needed to care about what was going on in Battle. I have been wanting to give it another chance on Steam, but its just so expensive even when on Sale. Maybe some day. 13 I had hope at the time since it seemed they where going back to a more Turn Based System, but the whole Leader Dying being Game Over killed a lot of the Fun. I wanted to use Hope due to Alexander being so cool, but he was to squishy. Once I got to the Open World part I lost interest in the Story and the Combat. The Sequels got better, but the Story was so hard to follow I keep having issues going back and finishing them. 15 just failed to grab my attention. I kind of have a hard time taking it serious when the Vibe I kept getting from the Trailers was them just going on Post High School Road Trip to have Fun, instead of on the Run because our Kingdom got Destroyed. Its the First FF I have never played. On top of just not having the Hardware to play it, 16 feels off to me. Not having a Party is just to different for a Main Line FF Title. I hope it turns out better then I fear, but I just cant help feeling it should have been a Spin-Off and not a Numbered Title.
Ranking things is agonizing for me, but beyond what's been mentioned, Lunar, Shadow Hearts, Shin Megami Tensei (I include Persona under that umbrella just to keep it easy), the Xeno games even though the Blade games don't do much for me, and Trails have to be on my list
1. SMT (including spin off persona, tokyo mirage) 2. Final Fantasy 3. Octopath 4. Dragon Quest 5. Bravely 6. Pokemon 7. Fire Emblem 8. Tales 9. Digimon 10. I like Chrono Cross (more than Trigger unfortunately they stopped at that game)
Im new to the jrpg universe and I’m loving every single second of p5, alr bought p4 on steam and also have all the xenoblade and fire emblem available on the switch, also got octopath 2, nier automata, smt 3 and V. Got a lil too excited buying a lot of stuff but I’ll eventually finish all those games ❤
Xenoblade, Pokémon, Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem and Disgaea for me. It's surprisingly difficult to choose as for many franchises I've only played one or two games!
Some classic franchises missing like Star Ocean, Phantasy Star, Shining, Wild Arms, Shadow Hearts, SMT, Ys, Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Valkyrie Profile or Legend of Heroes, but i understand those games are too hardcore for younger players.
Not a bad list…I’ve played some of these (mostly FF, Persona and Tales)… A couple of franchises that aren’t on here that are some of my favorites… 1. Shadow Hearts - To this day, Shadow Hearts holds a fond place in my heart because it was the first truly dark JRPG that still to this day has one of my favorite protagonists in Yuri Hyuga. It was also one of the first games that actually got me interested in world history because many of characters and sub-plots are loosely tied to historical figures and events. Yeah, I’ll admit the third one was by far and away the weakest one in the franchise, but it actually had the best combat, so I couldn’t completely hate it. 2. Chrono Series - Considering you put Octopath Traveler, I think it’s only fair to include Chrono since it only has two main games. What else can I say about Chrono Trigger that hasn’t already been said? The game was one of the most innovative RPGs to come out at its time of release and between its engrossing story, lovable characters, fun and innovative combat and sensational soundtrack, what is there not to love about it? Then, there is Chrono Cross…such a gorgeous game and I’m going to flat out say it…it has my favorite soundtrack of all-time for ANY game. I actually tear up anytime I hear Time’s Scar because it gives me such a rush of nostalgia. Considering the Chrono Cross remaster we got last year plus the crossover with Another Eden, it would be nice to see if Square Enix jumps at the bit to make a third game that we’ve all been begging for… 3. Parasite Eve - *sigh* Is it okay if I pretend The 3rd Birthday doesn’t exist? I take back what I said about Shadow Hearts…Parasite Eve was truly the first DARK RPG I ever played…it actually blew my mind that a JRPG franchise was set in the United States…which did make the game feel a bit more relatable. It had an engrossing story and a phenomenal soundtrack. If the game had any downsides, yes, the combat was really clunky and had some downright abysmal camera placement. The second game didn’t exactly improve that either and one of my biggest beefs with the second game was it kept you from grinding levels…as for the third game…I try to drive it out of my mind and pretend it doesn’t exist…it essentially took everything that made the first two games great, completely shit on them…and then had the audacity to give us…THAT ending…it was as if Square Enix made this game to piss off its Parasite Eve fans…I don’t know how no one in the development team didn’t take a step back and say, “are we sure this is the direction we want to take it?” *sigh* So yeah, great franchise as long as you avoid The 3rd Birthday like the plague.
Great list. I don't know if I have 10 because there are a lot of franchises where I loved the game(s) I've played in them but I haven't played enough. For example I've played DQ11 and Persona 4 and loved them both but haven't played any other games in the series. Then there are series like Final Fantasy. If you asked me this question in the early oughties I would've put FF at the top. But I haven't liked a Final Fantasy game since 10 and I haven't bought one since 13. So.... Some of the ones on my list would be Suikoden, Wild ARMs, Breath of Fire, Shadow Hearts, Trails, Tales.
Thank you for sharing this. I played some of them. Im looking for new JRPG game to play. For me, Suikoden series is the best game that I ever experience.
favorite JRPG franchises: 10: Legend of Heroes/trails of Series, 9: Tales of Series, 8: Dragon Quest series, 7: Voice of Cards Series, 6: The Wild Arms Series, 5: Persona Series, 4: Drakengard/Nier Series, 3: Star ocean series, 2: Kingdom Hearts Series, 1: Final Fantasy Series
On the subject of Dragon Quest, did you play the 3DS remake of 7? You showed PS1 footage when saying it was slow, but the 3DS remake speeds things up, at least in the beginning.
2:33 Woooo! And don't worry, Dragon Quest wasn't a childhood game for me either, I think I was really lucky the first one I tried was the right one, which is DQ9. I didn't just love it, but I loved trying new games (not necessarily DQ games, either) and give old JRPGs I felt I just completed and didn't quite enjoy what they had to offer, such as FF3 and FF6 a replay because of it. 5:48 Let's gooo, have you tried Live-A-Live? I highly recommend it, too.

even in monster hunter freedom unite u can still feel the weight of its weapons, just like souls series. i wonder if souls series got inspired by monster hunter in combat mechanics
@@aryantzh2028 Agreed. I just like the fast combat in God Eater and having an actual story. Besides Berserk and Kings Field, I guess the Souls games did get some inspiration with Monster Hunter. Excited for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC
Fantastic list! I'm sad you haven't enjoyed some of the older DQs but maybe give 5 a try - it has a great story and you may really dig it!!! It's archaic and funny enough kinda the reason I like it! lol
I mean he shown gameplay of the PS version of 7. Which I don't recommend of starting if you're new. And if you do wanna play 7. The 3ds does a better job at pacing.

To me it’s Final Fantasy, FF basically defines my taste in gaming overall. In my Top 10 games of all time I have 3 FF games and KH2, which wouldn’t exist without the FF series either. That being said, the last great one to me was FFX.
With the Dragon Quest segment, I'm curious have you tried DQ5? I'm kind of in the same boat of not having that much experience with the franchise, and as far as the older games go that one conceptually piqued my interest the most.
Im surprised to see rune factory on here. LETS GO! Im honestly surprised it isnt more popular, despite how liked the farm sims are. Its literally a farm sim with actual story and combat/rpg elements
Final Fantasy is my favorite RPG franchise ever, even though the last mainline title I truly adored was FFX. Still, so many of my all-time favorite games are from this series, especially Final Fantasy VII. Those were games that made my childhood and youth.
@@TheGamingShelf I haven't played the FFVII remake yet. My plan is to wait until all parts are released, let's see if I can actually stick to it. I do wish they would have somehow kept the turn-based combat. FFXVI looks amazing, I haven't been this excited about a new Final Fantasy in decades. The only problem is, I don't have a PS5 yet and can't afford it at the current price. Which was perfectly okay because of my giant backlog, but FFXVI changes it quite a bit. Hopefully, there's a great deal on the horizon!
There's so many great JRPGs out there, but there's also some hidden gems if you look hard enough! My favorite franchises are probably these... TLDR: Persona, Dragon Quest, Tie between Ys / Legend of Heroes, and honorable mention Tales Of. #1 Persona - I've only played Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal and they're both special games to me. I lean more towards Persona 4 Golden since it was my first game in the franchise I played, and it was a Steam gift from my brother for Christmas. Persona 5 Royal was one hell of an experience. Fantastic soundtrack, visuals, and just overall style. The menus look great on their own. I love the bonus Royal content, and it made Dr. Maruki one of my favorite characters. I look forward to any remakes/remasters and new Persona games ATLUS makes! #2 Dragon Quest - I've only played DQ 11 and DQ 8. Both great games and DQ 11 was my introduction into Dragon Quest. Honestly, DQ 11 was my second JRPG I played when I was first getting into the JRPG genre. I love the gameplay, characters, music, and the world the game is set in. Another special game to me since it helped me get into the genre. #3 Ys / Legend of Heroes - This is a tie between these two. I've played more LOH games than Ys, but I think Ys has slightly better or more fun gameplay. But I love LOH's story and world building. I've only played LOH Cold Steel 1 - 4 and they were a lot of fun. I loved the Persona-like social sim aspect in it, and I love Ys's action combat. Currently playing Ys: Origin and it's a lot of fun and impressive with the visuals and animations with a pixel graphic game. But if I HAD to choose I'd probably say Ys right now since it just has fun combat and good story, and easy to get into. LOH is great, but it's dialogue heavy, and you need to play previous games to fully understand what's going on. Honorable mention here is Tales Of series. I've only played Tales of Berseria and it left me satisfied and emotionally dead inside with the darker story. Probably the darkest JRPG story I've played. I love Velvet Crowe the protagonist, and her journey of trying to get revenge. I love any kind of protagonists, but I really love when games have female protags. I don't have much to say since I've not played any other game besides Berseria but I'm looking to play some more in the series! Thanks for reading!
I can't argue with any of these, but man "Fire Emblem is the only [SRPG] franchise that consistently outputs games at this quality" hit me like a ton of bricks. The absolutely state of one of my favorite genres... 😭
I agree with most of what you have to say about these franchises, my list is pretty similar just in a different order. Note: While I do enjoy Valkyria and Fire Emblem games, I do not consider turn based tactics games to be RPGs so I will not include them. 1- Persona 2- Xenoblade Chronicles 3- Final Fantasy 4- Star Ocean 5- Tales 6- Bravely 7- Valkyrie Profile 8- Grandia 9- Kingdom Hearts 10- Octopath Traveler
Whilst I’d move some positions around (DQ would be higher) and Persona and FF would tie for first - it’s so hard to split them, one has the nostalgia for me, but Persona is just greats… I’d stick SMT on the list as an honourable mention though.
Great List. A lot of the series in this list are my fave too. And if I may add some of my fave : 1. Suikoden, especially 1 and 2. Good story, a lot of Mini Games, a challenge to get all of 108 Stars, a great Antagonist (Man, I know Luca Blight is really cruel and twisted person, but we like him because he is so evil). I'm glad that we will get a Remastered soon. 2. Shadow Hearts That Ring of Destiny can be awful, but it's actually a challenge to timing it perfectly. And the story is good too. That graveyard system is unique. 3. Parasite Eve O well, at least the 1st game is still been considered as JRPG, while I can't say for the 2nd game (more Action than RPG). The 1st Dark JRPG I played, and still love until this day. 4. Xenogears and Chrono series Yeah, I guess that's all that I can add. Once again, thank you for this great list of JRPG. I like it.
for me its 1. legend of heroes 2. tales series 3. persona 4. xeno gear (saga, chronicles) 5. dragon quest 6. suikoden 7. final fantasy 8. atelier 9. wild arms 10. breath of fire
Dragon Quest has one of the most boring save games I ever see. And I really love DQ8 more than the new one. Great adventure with a horse girfriend. I think Suikoden, Megami Tensei, and Xeno are amazing too. PS2 used to have amazing franchises that never got a sequel like Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Lunar, Hack, Etrian (3ds), Golden Sun (GBA), Mana Khemia, Digital Devil Saga, etc. PS: Atlus not giving us a sequel to "Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight" is heresy. Such a fun game with story mode.
Speaking of Persona, I’m so happy Persona 3 Remake is coming out just before I got to play it, it will be my first time, and I can’t wait! EDIT: I lied, I can wait, with FFXVI :P
Worst selling game in series, in Japan (FW sales in Japan: VC4: 67k, VC1: 87k, VC2: 94k, VC3: 102k). Game was basically overshadowed by Fire Emblem Three Houses hype, Monster Hunter World (in Japan), Dragon Quest XI and Octopath Traveler (in West). And Sega did not enough advertised this game in West (i saw only 3 trailers about this game before release date, that was all). But after many price drops VC4 sold 1 000 000 copies on all platforms (2 years after release). But relax, underperforming sales is nothing new for all non Sonic and Yakuza games from Sega Japan since 20 years. Basically every non Sonic / Yakuza game sold bad, due to Sega America non existent marketing (they only advertise Sonic The Hedgehog, because they have no idea how to advertise japanese games).
For me: 1. Suikoden 2. Megami Tensei 3. Valkyria Chronicles 4. Sakura Taisen (this is not JRPG, but VN/Dating Sim hybrid, but i made exception) 5. Tales of 6. Final Fantasy (until FFXII) 7. Dragon Quest 8. YS 9. Trials of Cold Steel 10. Persona
If you wanna know my favorite it's quite obvious Xenoblade Tales Star ocean Kingdom hearts Final fantasy Monster hunter Ar Tonelico Valkyria chronicles Sakura wars Dot hack
@@TheGamingShelf Previous games are MUCH better than PS4 game, especially SW1-3 (in my opinion SW 3 is best game in series). Wait for fan translations patches for SW2 (which is nearly done) and SW3 (which is also in development), because Sega after huge flop of mobile gacha (they loss 30M $, just like Square Enix with FF Future Soldier) and bad reception from older fans about PS4 game, probably killed this franchise again.

Persona, fire emblem, final fantasy and disgaea are my personal jrpg picks
Also the tales of
Awesome list dude. I guessed a bulk of the stuff hahaha but getting the series in order I didn't haha! Great video dude
Yeah I'm probably pretty predictable like that haha. Thanks for watching!
What about Suikoden? Those first 2 games are masterpieces. The remaster is coming out soon, so if you haven't played them that will be a good time to do so. Persona is my favorite but Suikoden is second.
Every video mentioning final fantasy tactics is worth a like!
Great list! For me it's something like
1. Trails
2. Persona
3. Xenoblade
4. Ys
5. Fire Emblem
6. Tales
7. SMT
8. Valkyria Chronicles
9. Monster Hunter (if that counts)
@@warpuppy4528 play it its worth it.
Great list!
My list is:
1. Trails
2. Shin Megami Tensei/Persona
3. Final Fantasy
4. Ys
5. Pokemon
6. Xenoblade
7. Fire Emblem
8. Kingdom Hearts
9. Mother/Earthbound
10. Atelier
I am on the fence about whether Dark Souls counts as a JRPG series, if it does it's very high on this list
It's so nice to see Octopath on the list! Have you played the Bravely Default games? The first one's amazing
I have! Outside of the ending the first one is really good
The ones that satisfied me most in story, gameplay and music: KH series, Trails in the Sky trilogy, Solatorobo, and Tales of Abyss.
Honorable mentions: TWEWY and Poke'mon Black.
Games that I feel had some potential: Bravely Default and Xenoblade Chronicles 1.
Dude P5T comes November combining one of my favorite games with one of my favorite genres can't wait
Hell yeah same 🤩
This is the first Top 10 RPG list I've seen Rune Factory in😭. I'm glad there are people out there that like and appreciate the game that got me into RPGs
1. Xenoblade Chronicles
2. Nier
3. YS
4. Atelier
The only franchises I've played multiple games of!
Nice! Xenoblade has so many solid titles. Do you have one favorite?
I started watching this video after I finished your newest one on the Saga franchise.
Here's my top 10 series:
1. Persona/SMT
2. Yakuza/Like A Dragon
3. Dragon Quest
4. Xenoblade
5. Final Fantasy
6. Trails
7. Ys
8. Atelier
9. Blue Reflection
10. Star Ocean
Great list!
Great list. I probably would have most of those on my list. I have no experience with Pokemon and Rune Factory, so I would swap in The Trails series (especially the Sky and Crossbell arcs) and Suikoden.
I think it’s fair to say that as a series my favorite has to be Final Fantasy…as long as I can give Xenogears a special mention.
I’ll allow it 😉 what makes it your favorite?
The number of good games makes the FF series unmatched.
Now that the time between games is so long it makes the hype even higher.
I totally forgot penny blood was a thing! Good call.
definitely goes to show how impressive DQ11 was to have DQ make taylor's top 10 franchises primarily on its own
Haha yeah it's that good! It's the epitome of a classic JRPG adventure.
Genuine question since you like persona so much, have you played shin megami tensei? It does lack the social elements that a lot of persona fans love but i genuinely think that most people who love persona should try it, at least for me both series complement each other and make them more than the sum of their parts
The social elements are what I love most. Without them it’s just a dungeon crawler. I played SMT 3 and 5 and they were fine. Not really my thing.
Is it possible to play all these franchises on switch? Maybe not earlier games like old Pokémon but at least 1 game per franchise on switch?
Yes
Yeah pretty much! Good system for JRPGs for sure.
I love Pokémon , Final Fantasy and Persona they are wonderful. Cool video. ^_^
Although it is a small franchise, the Mother series will always have a special place in my heart
Dont care what anyone says, you have great taste!
Haha thank you my friend 🤝
Fun video!
"My tastes are a little odd"???
Your tastes are VERY mainstream.
I dunno, Ys being Top 3 and Dragon Quest being that low is kind of spicy IMO 😆
When people say they expect more from Pokemon, I think its pretty reasonable. Xenoblade 3 and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet released in the same year and the quality difference is staggering. They need to do better.
They should but the problem is they don’t need to so they won’t. It’s kind of sad, really.
Different devs and timetable. I'm all for cutting back on releases and taking their time in-between each release and having other 2nd party studios to help out. But it's basically Nintendo's c.o.d. therefore the quality isn't going to be there, especially when stacked against Xenoblade.
FINAL FANTASY FOREVER ❤
It will be my lifelong fave !,
with a unmatched streak of undeniable timless releases of masterpieces that shaped gaming as a whole from - FF6,7,8,9,10 & Tactics
Also worth to mention
FF4, jprg with the first real story and characterisation within the genre or even gaming
FF12, which is underrated and you can see it's influences all over franchises like Xenoblade Chronicles or even DQ11
FF14 which has muliple masterpiece expansions and is the worlds greatest mmo with the best community ever
FF7R which is a cinematic masterclass and one the best ps4 games while beeing one part of something even bigger
& FF16 now which looks like it will define the ps5 lifecycle with it's release
It’s an incredible series with such a long legacy. I cannot wait to play 16!
1. SMT (including spin off persona, tokyo mirage)
2. Final Fantasy
3. Octopath
4. Dragon Quest
5. Bravely
6. Pokemon
7. Fire Emblem
8. Tales
9. Digimon
10. I like Chrono Cross (more than Trigger unfortunately they stopped at that game)
Great list! Very similar to mine. Great minds as they say 😎
Do you one single favorite JRPG?
@@TheGamingShelf probably Xenoblade Chronicles 1, but Chronotrigger is very close 🙂
All classic franchises. Great list.
@@nr2676 True but, it's just his personal top 10 favorites. He can't fit every RPG franchise on there.
@@90shandheldgamer ofcourse
Not a bad list…I’ve played some of these (mostly FF, Persona and Tales)…
A couple of franchises that aren’t on here that are some of my favorites…
Considering the Chrono Cross remaster we got last year plus the crossover with Another Eden, it would be nice to see if Square Enix jumps at the bit to make a third game that we’ve all been begging for…
It’s okay, we can all pretend 3rd Birthday doesn’t exist ;)
Valkyria Chronicles is great!
Yeah it is!
,,Was'' great because this series is probably dead now.
This is my top 5
5) Legend of Heroes
4) Tales
3) Dragon Quest
2) Final Fantasy
1) Persona
Xeno will always be my favorite series of games - Dragon Warrior/Quest after that - love your list!! 😊❤
My favorite RPG series: Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Persona, Pokemon, Paper Mario (really the first two 😅) and Mario & Luigi (RIP)
Voice of Cards! What an expected pick. I love it.
I dont think the nier series count as a jrpg. Its japanese but more so action adventure
On the subject of Dragon Quest, did you play the 3DS remake of 7? You showed PS1 footage when saying it was slow, but the 3DS remake speeds things up, at least in the beginning.
I did! Was still too slow for my tastes :/
(in no particular order)
Ys | Tales | Persona | DQ
Don’t forget to like the video! 😜
The FE: Fates hate is so bizarre. Such a great game literally can’t wrap my head around the hate lol
Me neither! It's basically the same game as Awakening. I really don't get it at all.
I liked Birthright more than Awakening
All time favs :
Xenoblade Chronicles
Rune factory
octopath traveler
fire emblem
Baten kaitos origins
Some other I LOVE (not in order)
Yakuza 7 (now it can be considered as one lol)
pokemon
and SMT but i only played 5, and thats like the best turn based game ive ever played (tied with octopath 2 and yakuza 7)
The world ends with you + NEO
Nier
what a great list
Phantasy star was the RPG in the 80s that got me into RPGS
For me Dragon Quest will always be the greatest JRPG Franchise of all times.
It’s definitely the OG! Are you excited for 12?
@@TheGamingShelf oh absolutely and the dai infinity strash spin off game too.
Yesss Valkyrie Chronicles is so great. Which there were more games
For me Breath of Fire and Lufia are in the top... and sadly no persona, alto SMT is neat the TOP10
I didn't expect that trails were not here.
Not the biggest fan 🤷🏻♂️
Certainly interested in Valkyrie Chronicles.
5:12 Those were the days ❤
Tell me about it :)
Ys, Trails, Persona, and God Eater if it counts.
last week i tried to play god eater 1 and i think the old monster hunter still much better than that, especially the old monster hunter freedom unite
god eater combat is clunky af, the reward and progression feels like nothing.
even in monster hunter freedom unite u can still feel the weight of its weapons, just like souls series. i wonder if souls series got inspired by monster hunter in combat mechanics
No Trails? I'll admit it's inconsistent, but the highs are really high. Trails of Cold Steel 2 is really an epic game.
I can't stand the Cold Steel games. The Sky and Crossbell games are solid but not good enough to be top 10 for me.
@@TheGamingShelf what didn't you like about the cold steel games?
@@giovanniruiz73the writing is bad... full of plotholes and deus ex machina... characters are poorly written/tropey... stupid fanservice... the game execution is horrible...
Cold Steel games are low quality and as an old trails fan I’m ashamed to see what they did to the series
I haven’t tried that one, no. I’m kind hoping it gets an HD-2D remake eventually 😆
@@TheGamingShelf well, no info on the DQ3 one yet, it would be cool if they do more afterwards.
Im surprised to see rune factory on here. LETS GO! Im honestly surprised it isnt more popular, despite how liked the farm sims are. Its literally a farm sim with actual story and combat/rpg elements
some of my faves:
persona (only played 4 and 5, couldn't quite connect with 3)
Fossil Fighters
DQ
Trails
YS
You're not the first person to mention Fossil Fighter in the comments section. I might need to check it out!
Final Fantasy is my favorite RPG franchise ever, even though the last mainline title I truly adored was FFX. Still, so many of my all-time favorite games are from this series, especially Final Fantasy VII. Those were games that made my childhood and youth.
Did you play FF7 Remake? Are you excited for 16?
SMT as a whole ( counting persona an others spin-offs like Devil Survivor, Digital devil saga etc… ) Fire emblem and Digimon.
No game series has delivered so many emotions for me than Persona
I found it unfathomable that the Trails series didn't even make the list.
I agree with most of what you have to say about these franchises, my list is pretty similar just in a different order. Note: While I do enjoy Valkyria and Fire Emblem games, I do not consider turn based tactics games to be RPGs so I will not include them.
1- Persona
2- Xenoblade Chronicles
3- Final Fantasy
4- Star Ocean
5- Tales
6- Bravely
7- Valkyrie Profile
8- Grandia
9- Kingdom Hearts
10- Octopath Traveler
Whilst I’d move some positions around (DQ would be higher) and Persona and FF would tie for first - it’s so hard to split them, one has the nostalgia for me, but Persona is just greats… I’d stick SMT on the list as an honourable mention though.
Great List. A lot of the series in this list are my fave too. And if I may add some of my fave :
2. Shadow Hearts
That Ring of Destiny can be awful, but it's actually a challenge to timing it perfectly. And the story is good too. That graveyard system is unique.
3. Parasite Eve
O well, at least the 1st game is still been considered as JRPG, while I can't say for the 2nd game (more Action than RPG). The 1st Dark JRPG I played, and still love until this day.
4. Xenogears and Chrono series
Yeah, I guess that's all that I can add. Once again, thank you for this great list of JRPG. I like it.
for me its
1. legend of heroes
2. tales series
3. persona
4. xeno gear (saga, chronicles)
5. dragon quest
6. suikoden
7. final fantasy
8. atelier
9. wild arms
10. breath of fire
Final fantasy is my Favourite
Speaking of Persona, I’m so happy Persona 3 Remake is coming out just before I got to play it, it will be my first time, and I can’t wait!
EDIT: I lied, I can wait, with FFXVI :P
As much as I love Final Fantasy, there’s just something with Persona that gets you hooked.
Why do you think Valkryria chronicles 4 is the last one? Did it sell horribly or something?
From what I heard yeah 4 didn’t sell well. At least not enough to warrant a 5th game.
Great list. Agree with most of it except trails and golden sun would be there for me.
Atelier, Persona, FF, Trails, Tales, KH, DQ, and Mario & Luigi series
For me:
1. Suikoden
2. Megami Tensei
3. Valkyria Chronicles
4. Sakura Taisen (this is not JRPG, but VN/Dating Sim hybrid, but i made exception)
5. Tales of
6. Final Fantasy (until FFXII)
7. Dragon Quest
8. YS
9. Trials of Cold Steel
10. Persona
Suikoden! I’m super excited for the he collection. Are you going to pick that up?
@@TheGamingShelf Yes

Xenoblade
Tales
Star ocean
Kingdom hearts
Final fantasy
Monster hunter
Ar Tonelico
Valkyria chronicles
Sakura wars
Dot hack
I still need to play the rest of the Sakura wars franchise! I loved the PS4 game and I’m sure I’d enjoy the others.
@@TheGamingShelf I only played the 2 that actually came out in the west and finished both
@@TheGamingShelf Previous games are MUCH better than PS4 game, especially SW1-3 (in my opinion SW 3 is best game in series).
@@mechaotakugamer Technicaly 4 games were released outside of Japan/Asia. SW1 and SW2 were released OFFICIALLY in Russia (PC versions), but not in North America and Europe.
The xenoblade series not being on this list is a crime
I'd have to disagree with Tales of Arise. I am struggling with it right now. Tbh I haven't really liked a Tales game since Zestiria. My top 5 are probably Legend of Heroes, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Persona, and Xeno.
I'd say:
10) Valkyria Chronicles
9) Chrono
8) Suikoden
7) Dragon Quest
6) Grandia
5) Persona
4) Fire Emblem
3) Final Fantasy 1-10 (after 10, it's not even a series anymore; just a bunch of random games with "Final Fantasy" slapped on the cover)
2) Shining Force
1) Legend of Heroes (Trails)
Shinning force! Interesting. I’ve never played them. Which would you recommend?
@@TheGamingShelf I think 3 (which my avatar is from) is the best Strategy RPG of all time. But, you have to use fan translations to play the whole thing. 1 & 2 are also great, and easily available in Sega Classic packs.
FF,Dragon quest and Suikoden
im kinda too late to the jrpg party. But it appears that I've played one game from every franchise u mention here
The fact that Kiseki / Trails isn't in the list is a crime
My favorites in no particular order:
1. Persona
2. Fire Emblem
3. Summon Night
4. Atelier
5. Grandia
6. Wild Arms
7. Digimon Story series
8. Xenoblade Chronicles
9. Dragon Quest
10. Shin Megami Tensei
Summon Night! Interesting. I’ve always wanted to try them by the reviews have always been mixed.
@@TheGamingShelf Well if you like tactical strategy RPG's you will definitely find enjoyment in them. Now will they become your favorite franchise is hard to say. I don't think Summon Night is amazing but is still a solid B tier series and because most JRPG's I have played only had 1 game of 2, I had a hard time find 10 IP's I would recommend.
