    sensei! any advice on applying shihonage from standing against shorter uke without straining nage knee so much from bending?

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  6 лет назад +1

      Afiq radzi, that's an interesting question. I have seen some people not lifting uke's arm enough, so they have to bend their knees a lot to get under it. You can (and I think you should) lift uke's arm quite a lot, like raising a sword before cutting. Then you don't need to bend your knees that much.

      bend your knees and open your stance and if in reality if they are that small its not worth it i have students that are above 7 feet tall with young girls who are five feet and less its not practical of course you could just go on to your knees and prosecute the exercise no teacher is going to say thats wrong

    why no atemi? why no lock on the ground? You dont control your uke at the end!?

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  6 лет назад +1

      As for atemi, nowadays I prefer to find ways of doing the techniques where atemi is not necessary. But of course, it can be done. Sometimes, though, it can create a weakness, since the atemi takes momentum away from doing the technique. I have seen a lot of atemi applications that I sincerely doubt. I have seen good ones, too. Konstantin Rekk recently made a video with a lot of atemi, which are very skilled and efficient, and blending in well with aikido techniques. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/GwdjbqUnNGY/видео.html
      As for the lock on the ground, it is easily applied at the end of shihonage. But on this video - and mostly on my aikido classes - I focus on the way there. Too much locking tends to lead to a static thinking in aikido, I believe. Techniques tend to get stiff and mechanical. I don't even do them that often on ikkyo and nikyo. But that's just my preference. The locks are certainly part of the aikido curriculum. And as with atemi - they are not as easy to make confidently as they may seem.

    • @funnybunnystecher3173

      you don´t take your uke´s balance at the beginning of the movement, no armlock? He can easily pull back.your uke is strait standing when you start and perform shihonage!? What would happen ?

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  6 лет назад +2

      Funnybunnystecher, are you really sure about that? You can see on uke's posture that there is kuzushi at the beginning of the technique. His body gets twisted. The control is not in an armlock, but a wrist twist, which makes it very difficult for him to pull back. Don't jump to conclusions.

    • @funnybunnystecher3173
      @funnybunnystecher3173 6 лет назад

      Thank you for answering my comments...surely not easy to react on critisism - Respect for that!
      Uke´s body is in a vertical line almost all the time - he holds his balance - in ki no nagare the technique looks better - yes - Uke has to be off balance right from the beginning to the end....the arm has to be extended much more in my opinion - i´ve practised "good will Aikido" for quite a time - zombie partners with very good ukemi - sorry - nice to watch for some......in iwama style we are very strict about taking balance and control at the end of technique....then you dont need to ruin your partners wrists or shoulders...like my former teacher tried...

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  6 лет назад

      Funnybunnystecher, we seem to have different perception of vertical :)
      Zombie partners and ruined wrists or shoulders is not something I have experienced in my dojo, nor anywhere else that I can remember. If that was the case in your old dojo, I can understand why you switched.
      Very good ukemi, on the other hand, is definitely recommendable. So much better than very bad ukemi.

    • @nelsonhibbert5267
      @nelsonhibbert5267 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@StefanStenudd It depends on your life experiences. Step in the ring,work the doors, serve in the military... I've been fortunate (or maybe that should be unfortunate?) to have done all three, as well as some years in Aikido (I moved away from Ki to Yoshinkan, influenced by Robert Twiggers book and a desire to find something more direct and practical). I love Aikido, the techniques, the ethics, and it's overall aesthetic, and people like yourself are doing the right thing to keep the art alive. But if you're sole purpose is for self defense/combat, Aikido really isn't the best option. Life is short and the hours spent in an Aikido dojo are better spent somewhere else.

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  10 месяцев назад

      @@nelsonhibbert5267 I agree. If that would be my sole purpose I would do something else. I have found aikido to be rewarding in so many other ways. To me, it's an art, with all that it encompasses.

    I think you have dead hands, without power, without extension of ki. Uke grabs your hand and he does’nt move offline, but he stays in front of you.
    Shomenuchi: uke make an useless attack, without power, without extension of ki, with dead hands....
    I don’t like your style.

    • @StefanStenudd
      @StefanStenudd  5 лет назад

      You say that uke doesn't move offline. That is how I expect the attacker to act - move straight forward on a collision course, and not deviate from it voluntarily. Instead, it is tori who should move out of line by doing taisabaki. It seems we have differing ideas about that.
