I've been listening to the Red Army Choir for many years. Not something most people of my demographic do. I'm not even a socialist or communist. Just your typical, American. I just find the music beautiful, the lyrics inspiring, the stories they tell captivating.
I just found out about the plane crash. This is the first "celebrity" death that really affected me personally. Such a tragic loss of magnificent talent and culture. I pray for the victims, the families, and that a new generation will rise up to keep the legacy of the amazing Alexandrov Ensemble/Red Army Choir alive. They may be gone, but their legendary talent will echo through eternity.
Indeed my friend, it doesn't matter where you were born, or your political beliefs, as soon as we listen the Red Army Choir, a part of our heart becomes Russian, and tears of pride come up through our eyes unexpectedly.
Even when we don't understand a word, and that's makes this music so powerful and valuable for the human kind.

"motherland" is more Soviet i think
Rodina is can be translated to english only as homeland.
In general, in Russian language there is no word "motherland", only Fatherland (Отечество, Отчизна) and homeland (Родина).
