ABOUT US
At age 50 we left our jobs, sold most of our belongings, and decided to follow our dream of international travel for seven to nine months a year. Our goal is not to visit the most countries or see the most sites in a short amount of time, but to spend several months in each county that we visit, becoming immersed in the local area. When not traveling internationally, we hope to spend time visiting various beaches, cities, and national parks across the United States. We will show not only where we are going and what we are doing, but also provide practical advice on how to travel and explore on a reasonable budget in a relaxed and leisurely manner. Follow along as we figure out how to navigate our early retirement and semi-nomadic life.

Few people have anything but good things mostly to say about Cuenca. Noise and dog poop (?) seem to the main complaints I've heard. -?- These perhaps are in the other Ecuadorean 'cities' as well I would imagine ? Sounds like the weather could be a lot worse like most places in the US ! I really like the way they are said to 'respect' seniors in their culture. Of course the discounts would be nice for many on fixed lower incomes too. = my 2 cents worth. - - - Thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching Frank. I think Cuenca is definitely worth visiting once.
I have been living in Cuenca for almost six months and my issue is the city noise which creeps into your home. Almost all houses are built using brick and concrete blocks which are hollow and then a light coat of concrete is skim coated over them. All windows are single pane. Both of those combined allow noise to amplify. I live in a small condo complex of 4 units and I can hear everyone of my neighbors. Street noise, barking dogs and music make for some sleepless nights. I do love living in Cuenca and the next time that I come I will definitely live in a quieter neighborhood. I could have moved into the “Gringoland” area where the buildings are more to American standards but I wanted to immerse myself into the Cuencano lifestyle. I have traveled to other cities in Ecuador but have found Cuenca to be more to my liking.
The condo we stayed in was pretty quiet, fortunately. I hope you find a quieter place next time. I don’t like that type of incessant noise either. Thanks for watching.
Appreciate the nice comments about Cuenca. I haven’t heard much negative about it. I plan on checking it out for my retirement next year. Considering that other people live there and come back after scouting around, it’s a good sign. I do have a couple of bones to pick small as they are. Garlic press? Really?? So you can do all there is to do in 2 days? All the sights, museums, parks, theater etc? Wow. You do say several times all else is nice so thank you 🙏
I was being picky! But made fun of myself too ! You could probably stretch out the things to do to 3-4 days. It all depends on what you like to do. It is nice there and I see the appeal for retirees.
We are traveling from Mexico to Argentina over several years, in search of our favorite retirement city. Cuenca is on the list, and we plan to stay there for 3 months. You did not make it sound very fun.
We are currently in Matagalpa, Nicaragua and will be heading to 3 cities in Guatemala, a couple cities in Mexico, before heading to South America.
We do love cool weather.
Do you all have a few favorite cool weather cities ?
Thx
Scott n Lidia
Your adventure sounds amazing. I liked Cuenca for what it was, which was small. There weren’t many things that I like to do, such as museums. The weather when we were there didn’t lend itself for many outdoor activities. I think if I lived there I would have had more things to do as I made friends. Cuenca might be the right place for you and you should definitely check it out. I am more of a warm weather person. As for cool weather cities that I loved, I really liked Vienna, Austria. Prague and Budapest were nice too. I hope you find the perfect place!

Thanks very much !
We still have so many places to go see. I have to please ignorant when it comes to Eastern Europe although it should be one of our target areas. Enjoy your travels !
Cuenca has an altitud of 8370 ft. Regardless of which season, temperatures in Cuenca reflect the subtropical highland climate of most communities in Ecuador’s Andean highlands. With daytime temperatures in the mid-60s to high 70s and evening temperatures in the high 40s to low 50s, before you travel you have to check what is the altitude of the city. Artisans in nearby villages specialize in products ranging from guitars to filigree silver to Panama hats. Yes, that famous straw headgear originates in Ecuador. It is good to research well if you want to travel. If you would like to travel to places that have as you say American standards travel only in the states. Traveling abroad means experiencing other cultures. The USA has beautiful cities like Washington DC Most have the same architecture with malls Mcdonald's or Walmart looks the same in every city.
We liked Cuenca. I would visit again. We travel to experience different cultures.
Good video video, very honest and with no hype.
Thanks👍
Glad you liked it My Budgie Journey. Thanks for watching.
Really like your honest opinion and down to earth video.
Thanks Donna!
Nice refreshing no hype review. Thanks
Thanks James. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Thank you. Do you have a link to the Air B&B you stayed in? We are visiting in January. Many Thanks.
Thanks. This is our favorite Airbnb so far. Here is the link. abnb.me/hsIZAtZ4Ltb
good info. thanks!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
I wish you all the luck in the world in your new cohabitation..
Thanks.
I love hearing your thoughts on places! Good to know that if we visit we might want to keep it shorter and try to avoid the rainy season. I would have to get out into the mountains!!
We wanted to go to the mountains for sure. Maybe next time!
Every video from Cuenca has people wearing hoodies or raincoats. No thanks! That’s why we chose the coast, but everyone is different and their needs and wants vary. Hope you find the perfect fit!
@@rvdareyet7201 love your name! We don’t plan on settling down for at least 9 more years. The longer we travel the more our wants seem to change.
We are retiring in 6 months and looking at low cost cities from Mexico to South America. We like cool weather, speak Spanish, and have lived abroad before.
We have about 10-12 cool weather cities we hope to visit over a 3-5 year time period just slow traveling the whole time.
That sounds like a great plan. We have a small condo in Memphis. We are slow traveling about 65% of the time.
I'm curious, what are the 10-12 cities on your list? We also prefer cool weather.

Ecuador- Cuenca and Cotacochi
Peru- Arequipa

I’m visiting Loja next week it’s also a cool temp town. Staying in Cuenca at the moment. Not too crazy about the traffic here.
Quito in Ecuador is very busy and the traffic can be bad. Other small town in Ecuador can be Vilcabamba and Cotacachi. I suggest you watch the videos of JP and Amelica they have lived in three cities in Ecuador.
hi so u travel around and not perminet, also how was plumbing , ?heard uhad to seperate ur wipes to a garbage can, cant flush all down tolite
Hi Randy. We travel 70-75% of the time. We come home to Memphis several times a year. You are right you can’t flush toilet paper/wipes in Cuenca. It wasn’t a problem.
Thank you for sharing.
I am new to your channel.
Did the altitude affect either of you?
If so, how did you adjust?
Have you been to Manta?
Would you consider living there?
Hi Loretta. We were mildly affected by the altitude. Usually when climbing steps. To adjust we just walked/climbed a bit slower. Thanks for watching.
Say whats the brothers situation like were there any not being funny im doing a border run in september to quito so should i go to cuenca
We liked Cuenca. I think it is worth visiting. I liked it better than Quito. It just isn’t the long term city for us. Thanks for watching.
Nice to meet you..I live in N.Y and I plan to check it out.....as an Ecuadorian, I would love to meet the Expat community over there...what I keep wondering is,the rain all day scene....but I love the cool weather....
Hi Rafael. During our time there it only rained part of the day.
I thought you said it rains every day...that would be a somber outcome if i decide to go ...Thanks
@@rafaelsolorzano700 it does rain every day just not the entire day. I was there in March and April. I can’t speak for other months.
You can visit Quito the capital small town like Cotacachi.
Rain is not the problem but for most people it’s a few degrees too cold at night and the weather is pretty dull.
There's so much to do here. Music, concerts, etc.
We liked Cuenca. Tons of stuff to do. It just wasn’t the long term city for us.
Good Video. Did you have any issues with the altitude in Cuenca? My neighbors just came back from four weeks there and said that it took them some time to adjust to the thin air, but they loved the City very much. Peace
Hi. We only had issues with the altitude when climbing stairs. Otherwise we were fine. Thanks for watching.
We just got to Cuenca a little over 3 weeks ago from Florida. We are still adjusting to the altitude but getting better. The one thing is that we lost our shitzu 2 days later. She was 15 but in great shape until the altitude effected her. So if you want to bring a small pet make sure you talk to your vet about it . God bless
@@mainjoint condolences on the loss of your shitzu.
more than 300,000 people in the city limits, are you really sure that its a small town? i mean maybe if you're from NYC, LA, or CHI.
I live in Memphis which has a million people so it feels small to me. Thanks for watching.
Ģrasias x Compartir. Y se quedan a vivir prestan de vacaciones. 🇪🇨????
Estela, thanks for watching. My Spanish isn’t good. We liked Cuenca and are glad we came for the month. We just preferred other places and due to there being so many other places to go I am not sure we would come back.
Why don't you come back in the US and pay $5 dollars for a gallon of Milk and check the prices out ... Than complain about food prices in Ecuador
I am back in the US and the prices are through the roof for sure. This doesn’t change my opinion about the prices in Ecuador at the time of filming. Thanks for watching.
@@SlowTravelChronicles You right I am Ecuadorian and imported products are expensive that is a fact .and sorry for that bad comment....peace ✌️
Food can be very expensive in Ecuador, especially when imported.
Did you say "cus your Old" 😆
That's because we are!!
